LEEDS UNITED hoped their season would have been done and dusted by the final Sunday in May.

Instead, the Whites travelled to Ipswich Town on May 3 knowing two but hopefully three more games stood in front of them through the Championship play-offs.

Derby County ensured that only two more matches ensued as Marcelo Bielsa’s Whites suffered heartache in the semi-finals and a 10-day extension of the season with no reward.

From August 5 until May 15 but really from June 25 – the day United’s players reported back for pre-season training and Marcelo Bielsa’s first session last summer.

Leeds will again return to pre-season in the last week of this month with United put through their paces in no uncertain terms last summer with several players admitting Bielsa had provided them with the toughest pre-season they had ever had.

That paid dividends on the pitch – Leeds often cited as the F***est team in the Championship – the habit of netting late winners no coincidence.

But United’s players are heading for a similar summer again with the current window of rest needing to be savoured to the full and with international demands having extended certain individuals’ seasons to nearly 60 games.

Ironically, it is a player loaned out the previous season who tops that list with Polish international midfielder Mateusz Klich having made his 59th appearance of the season during Monday’s 4-0 win at home to Israel in a European Championships qualifier.

The 2018-19 campaign proved quite the turnaround for the Pole who was loaned out by Thomas Christiansen last January after making only nine appearances for the Whites in the first half of the campaign.

Sixteen outings followed on loan at FC Utrecht in the second half of the campaign but after impressing Bielsa over the summer upon his return to Thorp Arch, no Whites player has seen more action during 2018-19.#

Following his 59th outing for the season for club and country on Monday, Klich admitted it was “time to charge batteries for next season” following his mammoth campaign.

Speaking after the eventful 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at the end of April, the prospect and feat of playing every single league game for Leeds this term was clearly on Klich’s mind.

“I never expected to play every game,” said Klich.

“I had a couple of games where I struggled but there is no player in this league who could play 46 games and have no struggles because it’s a very tough and demanding league. It’s another nice challenge to do – the 46 games – and I hope I am going to play against Ipswich as well.”

Klich indeed came through another 90 minutes against Ipswich and two more games against Derby followed taking the Pole to 48 league games for the season and 4,000 minutes of football for the league campaign as a whole.

Even allowing for Aston Villa and Derby playing one game more, that is the 17th highest in the division with Derby’s Richard Keogh topping the charts and clocking up 4,392 minutes of football.

Klich, though, had another nine appearances with Poland to contend with plus two EFL Cup ties, making him United’s busiest player with 4,696 minutes for club and country.

As far as the Championship was concerned, West Brom’s Sam Johnstone was next behind Keogh in terms of minutes played with 4,350. Middlesbrough’s Darren Randolph, Sheffield

United’s Dean Henderson, Millwall’s Jake Cooper and Norwich City’s Tim Krul all put in 4140 as the only players in the division outside of those teams in the play-offs to play every minute of every regular league game. Beaten in the play-off semi finals, West Brom’s Sam Johnstone also appeared in every fixture, along with Derby’s Keogh.

Minutes wise, West Brom’s Jay Rodriguez is next with 4,135 minutes, followed by Stoke’s Joe Allen (4,132), Rotherham United’s Semi Ajayi (4,107), Bristol City’s Marlon Pack (4,098), Swansea’s Mike van der Hoorn (4,070), Derby’s Fikayo Tomori (4,062), Reading’s Andy Yiadom (4,050), Stoke’s Jack Butland and Rotherham’s Marek Rodak (both 4,050) and then Sheffield United’s Enda Stevens (4,029) before Klich.

But it is Klich’s international demands that sets him apart.

At Leeds, others have been almost as busy with Gjanni Alioski making 56 appearances for club and country this term and also signing off on Monday in Macedonia’s 4-1 loss at home to Austria.

Pontus Jansson – in action for Sweden in their 3-0 loss at Spain the same day – has also featured 46 times for club and country. And even without any sort of international demands, Kalvin Phillips featured 46 times this term with Manchester City loanee Jack Harrison next with 42 followed by Pablo Hernandez (41), captain Liam Cooper (39) and Stuart Dallas (39).

Already, the countdown to pre-season is on with United’s players’ return to pre-season set to be staggered.

The majority of United’s players will report back on June 24 with a select group back on June 29.

Some players have even asked to come back early and missing out on promotion clearly still hurts.

Whichever way you look at it, a quick turnaround looms - with Klich and co ready to once again put in the hard yards to erase the pain through promotion next term.

EFL to overhaul TV negotiations after Sky deal controversy

The row over the previous TV deal led to Shaun Harvey stepping down as EFL chief executiveJOHN WALRON/PA
The EFL is to undertake an overhaul of how it negotiates TV deals after an independent report raised questions over the process surrounding the controversial signing of a £595 million contract with Sky.

A number of Championship clubs were unhappy with how a five-year Sky deal was pushed through in November, which led to the EFL calling in independent consultants to look at its practices.

The findings of the independent report by Harbottle & Lewis are contained in a confidential letter sent to club chairmen, a copy of which has been seen by The Times. It raises questions about whether four members of the commercial committee that voted for the deal were actually eligible to vote. Three voted in favour of the Sky deal, which…

Noel Whelan Exclusive: This is what Phillips agent has told me about his Leeds future

EXCLUSIVE

Noel Whelan has given Leeds United fans hope that Kalvin Phillips will not be sold this summer by revealing he’s been told the player wants to stay.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-United striker Whelan explained he had been informed by Phillips’ agent that the midfielder wants to sign a new contract and commit his future to his boyhood club.

This comes amid a report Aston Villa are preparing a £14million bid for the 23-year-old, while there is also strong interest from other Premier League clubs including Bournemouth, Norwich City and Southampton.

“I know Kalvin is desperate to stay at Leeds,” Whelan told Football Insider. “I’ve spoken to his agent, who told me he’d love to stay at the club. There is no hiding that.”

As revealed by Football Insider, Leeds have made an early move to keep Phillips by promising him he will be offered an improved contract when he returns from holiday.

“The club need to put their money where their mouth is,” Whelan added. “I have no doubt Marcelo Bielsa wants Kalvin Phillips at the club, and they need to show him that he is wanted by the club.

“He is away on holiday at the minute and, hopefully, when he comes back, he can agree a new deal. He is a Leeds boy who loves the club.”

The Phillips situation is being regarded by many Leeds fans as a litmus test of the ambition of owner Andrea Radrizzani and a board who have sold Ronaldo Vieira and Chris Wood for major fees in each of the last two summer windows.

“It’s definitely a test for Mr Radrizzani,” Whelan told Football Insider. “The interest in Phillips is real. You’ve got Bournemouth, I’m hearing Wolves and there is Villa as well. There’s Premier League teams that realise the importance of a player like Phillips.”

To cover Leeds United from elsewhere...

Leeds United writer Phil Hay is leaving the Yorkshire Evening Post

The Yorkshire Evening Post is sorry to announce the departure of chief Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay.
Phil will leave the title later this month after 15 years at the Yorkshire Evening Post to take up an opportunity elsewhere. He will continue to cover the club in his new role.

He joined the paper in 2004, aged 23, having previously worked for the Press Association. Phil is originally from Edinburgh and is a Hearts fan.

He has been covering Leeds United since 2006 and has travelled all over the world following the Whites.

Phil will be hugely missed by his colleagues and everyone at the Yorkshire Evening Post wishes him well for the future.

Phil said:
"There have definitely been more downs than ups for Leeds in that period (which makes me wonder if I was a bit of a curse) but they're the most fascinating and compelling club, and a club who never sleep.

"Don Waters, the YEP's former United writer, once said to me that you're never short of a story at Elland Road and he's right. This season goes down as my highlight - a pleasure to write about Marcelo Bielsa and to see Leeds go as close as they did. It been a privilege to do this for 13 years at the YEP."

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa in €19m legal action – ‘Player trading’ has a role

Sport Witness Team12th June 2019
Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa is a man of principle.

When he believes he’s done something wrong he’ll face up to it and deal with the consequences.

But if he believes he’s been wronged, then there’ll be no leniency when it comes to dealing with those who have gone against him and his team of staff.

Bielsa doesn’t like people going back on their word, and that’s why he walked out of Lazio so quickly, realising that promises made were there to be broken.

At Lille, the Argentine manager didn’t feel he had enough backing to implement the changes he wanted at the club. In December 2017, the French club terminated Bielsa’s contract and since then there’s been a legal dispute.

Wednesday’s edition of L’Equipe reports the Leeds United manager is seeking €19m from Lille. That’s made up of the rest of the contract he had left and further payments for damages.

He’s also claiming €4m for his assistants.

The fun part is that Bielsa plans to show up in court himself next year, with the Leeds United manager wanting to give his side of the story personally.

Benjamin Cabagno, who is representing the manager, is quoted as saying: “The public announcement in February 2017 of Marcelo’s arrival helped the club to obtain the necessary contributions to finance a business project based on the principle of “player trading” in the goal of a quick return on investment. It will be interesting to evaluate the period of integration and influence (of Bielsa) on the players who will be transferred for very high sums.”

The argument seems to be that the manager fulfilled his duties and Lille’s sales this summer will evidence that.

Westlife's Nicky Byrne talks about his time at Leeds United during reunion tour

Published: 13:17 Tuesday 11 June 2019
Westlife star Nicky Byrne spoke about his time training with Leeds United as he returned to the city for the band's reunion tour.

The singer, who had a stint as a professional footballer, spent two years with Leeds United after signing for them as a goalkeeper in 1995.

He was also a squad member of the FA Cup Youth winning team in 1997 and left when his contract expired later that year.

Speaking during the band's 20 Tour at Leeds' First Direct Arena on Monday evening he recalled his time training on the streets of Beeston Hill with the club.

And he also shared details of a chance encounter with a group of men at a cash machine in Harehills that left him wondering whether he might be mugged.

He told the crowd: "Those Wortley and Beeston Hills that we used to do pre-season training on up and down until you literally spewed up it stood me well.

"Those lads never caught me.

"Leeds United gave me one thing apart from a great football career. It made me fast and it made me fit and they were never going to catch me."

He went on to thank the coaches at the club - including Eddie Gray - for making him a "young fit lad" and shared his memories of Mister Craig's nightclub.

He added: "I had a wonderful time in this city and it's always great to come back.

"And you made me feel so welcome when I was here living here.

"It's a brilliant city and it's really amazing to be back playing with the lads."

The pop super group, who reformed earlier this year, are set to play again in Leeds tonight at the First Direct Arena.

Noel Whelan Exclusive: I’m hearing this is reason Leeds ace’s big-money exit has stalled

an image
EXCLUSIVE

Noel Whelan has claimed Jack Clarke’s potential exit from Leeds United has stalled because the club have “overpriced him” at £20million.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United striker claimed he has heard that the Whites have slapped the enormous valuation on the 18-year-old winger amid Premier League club interest.

Football Insider revealed last month that Tottenham are preparing a move to sign Elland Road academy product after encouragement that he could be lured away with a bid in the region of £10m.

There is also interest in the rising star from Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Southampton, but Whelan is unconvinced any would be willing to pay a huge sum for such an unproven player.

“Leeds have overpriced the young man from what I hear,” he told Football Insider. “They want £20million for him and he’s not worth that. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

“£12million is a lot of money, but £20million is overpricing a player. You have to be sensible with a player’s valuation. He still has a long way to go.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’d love him to stay at Leeds and progress as a player, but we will see if that happens.”

Clarke emerged from the Leeds youth ranks to burst on to the first team scene last season and made a big impact with a series of dazzling performances, mainly as a winger.

United stalled on offering the teenager a new deal during the campaign and this has given encouragement to Premier League clubs he can be lured away this summer for the right price.

Swansea City winger Daniel James is expected to complete his transfer to Manchester United today.

The deal is thought to be worth around £18m.

Ikke rart vi prøvde! Litt rart vi bommet på han her.

Kanskje man lytter mer til Bielsa neste gang!  :(

Men i svarte natta, Jon!!!!!

 8)
Men i svarte natta promo.

Tullegutt!!!

« On 11 August 2017, after signing a new five-year deal with Chelsea, Baker joined Championship side Middlesbrough on a season-long loan.[37]»

Helt utrolig.... ::)

Takk!  ;D

Leeds United's 2018/19 season was one to remember and it's coming to a screen near you

Leeds United supporters will look back on the 2018/19 with some fond memories but a sense of what could have been.

Marcelo Bielsa led his side to the cust of automatic promotion before settling for a place in the play-offs. Unfortunately defeat to Derby County ended the dream for another season.

It was a campaign of high controversy with Spygate making headlines around the work, some glorious moments and an ending to forget at Elland Road.

And it appears that Whites fans will soon have to relive the campaign with the Daily Mail reporting that a deal has been signed for the documentary.

Yorkshire-based filmakers The City Talking have been filming behind-the-scenes throughout the season as Leeds looked to book their place in the Premier League and they were granted exclusive access by the club.

Amazon has now reportedly agreed a deal to take on the Leeds story after recent successful football documentaries following Manchester City and Sunderland.

Leeds United's unforgettable 2018-19 season

The series is expected to be released in the coming months on Amazon Prime.

The City Talking describe themselves as 'A media company producing magazines and feature-length documentary films inspired by cities' and they have previously worked on other LUFC documentaries.

Their acclaimed feature-length film 'Do You Want To Win' detailing the story of Leeds' 1992 league championship season was already sold to Amazon Prime while they have also produced a series of short films about the club.

Men i svarte natta, Jon!!!!!

Men i svarte natta promo.

Tullegutt!!!

Kom deg ut i sola nå!  ;)
