En artikkel fra 2007:

Could Robbie be Harrogate's junior answer to Wayne Rooney?

BUSTLING little Robbie Gotts - already dubbed a junior version of Wayne Rooney - had coaches looking on agog as he emerged a star performer in a junior soccer tournament.

Published: 17:26 Thursday 08 March 2007
Robbie was the smallest lad among more than 100 players taking part in a Leeds United Invitation six-a-side tournament at Leeds.

But when it came to sharpshooting Robbie netted 15 goals as his Harrogate-based Pannal Ash under-7s went on to win the championship - with rosy-cheeked Robbie taking top billing.

Team coach Cliff Trotter said: "I've been coaching lads for more than 30 years and have seen many talented youngsters. Some have gone on to play for professional clubs but I've never seen anyone quite like little Robbie.

"He plays against much bigger lads but has a heart for the game as big as a bucket," said Mr Trotter.

Robbie's father Antony previously played for the club and now coaches the Pannal Ash under-9s.

Robbie, who attends Pannal Primary School in Harrogate, recently celebrated his seventh birthday and has been playing for Pannal Ash since he was five.

Mr Trotter said: "Robbie created such an impression at the event that the

Leeds United Academy coach

Dave Harrison was rung up at the Thorp Arch training ground and asked to come and see the lad's twinkle-toed skills - all combined with his gutsy ball battling qualities and an eye for the back of the net."

Added Mr Trotter: "The reaction from Mr Harrison to Robbie was 'how have we missed him"?

The United coach was so impressed that he has awarded special training sessions for Robbie at the Leeds United Academy.

Meanwhile, following the Pannal Ash club's success the Leeds United Academy has asked the club to take part in a new Harrogate Development Centre for the 8s, 9s and 10s age group with lessons from Leeds United coaches.

The course will run for a period of four weeks from March 7 at Harrogate High School's Astroturf pitches.

The aim of the coaching will be to help young players score goals, make goals and stop goals.

Did Leeds United really 'cheat' against Birmingham City?

Joe Urquhart
Published: 13:00 Tuesday 25 September 2018
Leeds United fell to a 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City on Saturday afternoon - but did they 'cheat' by attempting to introduce a multi-ball system during the game?

United fell to their first defeat of the Championship season as an eight game unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Garry Monk's Blues.

Leeds United lost to Birmingham City 2-1.

Birmingham, who scored twice in the opening half, frustrated the hosts with a number of tactics which saw several players booked for time-wasting as they attempted to disrupt the Whites flow.

United responded, according to a West Midlands Sport commentator, by introducing a multi-ball system in the second half of the game.

Here's what one BBC commentator said, report Birmingham Live: "Leeds did try to cheat by introducing a multi-ball system at half-time which wasn't used in the first half.

"The first time they did it the fourth official was on it and got the balls back in straight away.

"You're not allowed to change during the course of the game."

It appears that fourth official Simeon Lucas put a stop to any implementation of the system during the fixture at Elland Road but according to EFL rules multi-ball systems cannot be used in league games regardless.

Section 5, rule 33.20, states in the official rule handbook, "Multiple Balls. No Club shall be entitled to utilise a ‘multiple ball’ system in any League Match."

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alejandro_Sabella

Alejandro Javier Sabella (locally [saˈβela]; born 5 November 1954) is an Argentine football manager and former player. Born in Buenos Aires, he began his playing career with River Plate in his home country before moving to England in 1978 to play for Sheffield United. Known as "Alex" while in England (an anglicized version of his real name), Sabella then had a spell with another English side, Leeds United, before returning to South America and representing Estudiantes, Grêmio, Ferro Carril Oeste and Irapuato.

Whites capture Chelsea man.

Leeds United are pleased to announce the signing of Izzy Brown from Premier League side Chelsea on a season-long loan deal
.

The 21-year-old has been capped at various youth levels by England and becomes our sixth signing of the summer transfer window.

Brown started his career with West Bromwich Albion before moving to Stamford Bridge to join Chelsea, who he twice helped to win the FA Youth Cup.

He has had a number of loan spells away from London, gaining first team experience at Vitesse Arnhem, Rotherham United, Huddersfield Town and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Joining Huddersfield on loan in January 2017, he helped the Terriers win promotion to the Premier League for the first time, making 18 league and play-off appearances, scoring four goals.

Last season, Brown spent the campaign with Premier League side Brighton and made 14 appearances in all competitions, before picking up a knee injury in January, which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

Brown, who has been recovering since the turn of the year, will now continue his rehabilitation at Thorp Arch and will be able to return to training shortly after the international break.

Cupkamp i dag!

Bygones: Stein heads home after unremarkable 44 days in charge of Leeds United

Leon Wobschall

Published: 06:02 Monday 20 August 2018
IT was brief and unremarkable and lasted a mere 44 days.

Jock Stein’s time at Leeds United will represent a small footnote in the club’s history, with the managerial grandee barely having time to ingratiate himself with Whites fans before heading back to his native Scotland to manage the national team.

Leeds, Elland Road, 22nd August 1978 - ''Jock Stein in unveiled...
Leeds, Elland Road, 22nd August 1978 - ''Jock Stein in unveiled...
The ex-Celtic manager, unhappy at being pushed into a backseat at Parkhead where his main area of responsibility revolved around running Celtic pools – a club-run lottery scheme – had seemingly found a challenge to whet his appetite at Leeds some forty years ago in August 1978.

But the fire soon dimmed with Stein’s wife struggling to settle and the 55-year-old increasingly aware to the possibility of the Scotland job soon being available.

And so it transpired, with Stein named as Ally MacLeod’s replacement on October 5, nine days after his predecessor’s resignation.

After failing to tempt Lawrie McMenemy, Ron Saunders and Don Howe to Elland Road, Leeds turned to Stein as they found what they viewed as a long-term replacement for Jimmy Armfield.

‘Tell London that you can say something about the Scotland job and me… you could say something to the effect that you believe I would be interested in going back to Scotland…’

Jock Stein to reporters
Stein’s first game in charge ended in a 3-2 loss to Leeds’s arch-rivals Manchester United before wins over Wolves and Chelsea.

League defeats to Manchester City and Tottenham and two insipid draws with West Brom continued the inconsistent start to Stein’s tenure and all the while, speculation raged that MacLeod’s reign at Hampden Park was in grave peril following Scotland’s deflating showing at that summer’s World Cup in Argentina.

MacLeod went on to stand down on September 26, with Stein soon broaching the subject of the Scotland job with revered BBC Scotland broadcaster Archie Macpherson and other journalists known to him.

In his biography, Macpherson recalled. “This was a very unhappy man (Stein) I was speaking to, morose, slowly spoken, husky.

...but he lasted only 44 days.

“It was then he came up with what was on his mind. ‘Tell London that you can say something about the Scotland job and me… you could say something to the effect that you believe I would be interested in going back to Scotland… you can’t say you have been talking to me. Just play it like you are confident I would take the job. Make it sound like the SFA are being a bit slow on this.’”

Macpherson and his fellow journalists did what was asked and the story broke, ahead of Stein later speaking on the radio to deny the reports: “That’s just Archie Macpherson flying a kite.”

But the seeds had been sown with the SFA, conscious of the clamour for Stein to ‘come home’, soon getting in touch with Leeds.

Initially Whites chairman Manny Cussins refused permission. But the fact that Stein had agreed a three-year contract with Leeds despite never signing it meant that a return to Scotland was a near-certainty.

Speculation raged in the build-up to Stein’s final match in charge, a 3-0 win over Birmingham.

Cussins attempted to keep hold of Stein by offering him a £35,000 lump sum and a luxury home, but his manager’s mind was made up and Stein was gone.

https://no.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/York_City_FC

My Yorkshire: Leeds Utd legend Eddie Gray on his favourite people and places

Eddie Gray is one of the most popular players in the history of Leeds United for whom he made almost 600 appearances. Appointed a club ambassador in 2013, he now commentates on games, home and away, for Leeds United TV.

What is your first Yorkshire memory? Before I came to Leeds, I was playing for Glasgow Schoolboys against Lanarkshire Schoolboys and the Leeds scout, John Barr, told my father that he’d like me to visit Leeds United who had a young manager called Don Revie. I was 14, and to be honest, I was a Celtic fan and wanted to play for them. I’d never heard of Leeds United. I got on the train by myself and was picked up by Don’s right hand man Maurice Lindley. It was Christmas 1962 and there was snow everywhere... I never got homesick, the Yorkshire folk were very friendly and Don was always thoughtful about families and sent the boys home every six weeks.

What is your favourite part of Yorkshire and why? I love the Harrogate area and I love Kirkby Overblow where we live. Linda, my wife, and I love the Dales and we love going up to Malham to walk and climb. The views there are stunning and wonderful.

What is your idea of a perfect day out or weekend out in Yorkshire? My perfect day is a Sunday when the kids and grandchildren come here for lunch. If it’s a nice day, we’ll sit outside and look at the great view here and if the sun’s out, we sit outside and have a drink and a barbecue.

Do you have a favourite walk or view? I love going to Knaresborough and walking along the River Nidd. I saw a kingfisher there once. You go down Abbey Road and it’s so peaceful. Both of us love that walk.

Which Yorkshire sportsman, past or present, would you like to take out for lunch? It would have to be the show jumper Harvey Smith. He’s such a character. I’ve always liked him and Harvey used to come to Kirkby Overblow.

Eddie Gray enjoys a walk along the River Nidd at Knaresborough.

Which Yorkshire stage or screen star, past or present, would you like to take out for dinner? That would have to be Judi Dench who’s a great actress. I see she’s been involved with the Olympics. I also think that having dinner with Alan Bennett would be a good laugh.

What do you think it is that gives Yorkshire its unique identity? The people. They embrace Yorkshire and call it God’s Own Country or County. They are very proud of the place. We are so lucky here. We’re only 25 minutes into Leeds and 10 minutes or so into Harrogate. York’s not far, and when you’re in Sheffield, you’re soon into the countryside. Yorkshire folk are warm and since I came here full time aged 15, I’ve been treated very well. Yorkshire is a terrific place and more and more people are beginning to realise that.

Do you follow other sports in the county and, if so, what? I like most sports. I love golf and play at Pannal near Harrogate. I’m off 11. I love tennis, too. We went to Wimbledon this year and saw Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Andy Murray on the Centre Court.

I’m fond of horse racing, and I don’t think there’s a better course in the country than York.

I am also into cricket. I’m so pleased for Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root is a tremendous talent. I knew Jonny’s dad well and Jonny at one point used to play at the Leeds United academy and I’d see him up there. I’m delighted he’s doing so well with England and I keep sending him texts. I take an interest in Leeds Rhinos and what a great team they’ve been in recent years.

If you had to name your hidden Yorkshire gem, what would it be? That’s a hard question, but the thing about Yorkshire is that you can always see something spectacular. We like Robin Hood’s Bay, and Filey, Scarborough and Bridlington all have something to offer. The thing is that if you live in a city you don’t have far to go to be in the countryside or at the coast.

Do you have a favourite Yorkshire restaurant or pub? We have two good pubs who do excellent food in Kirkby Overblow – the Star and Garter and the Shoulder of Mutton. We still like the Flying Pizza at Roundhay in Leeds, but if we were to pick a restaurant Linda and I like, we love the Italian place at Hornbeam Park, Al Bivio, in Harrogate.

Who is the Yorkshire person you admire the most? I’m not musical and I’m not a great reader, but I have great admiration for Fanny Waterman. I’ve been to listen to some of the best, young musicians in the world in Leeds and that’s down to Fanny. What she has done for the city of Leeds is amazing and as a Yorkshire person she’s done a lot for Yorkshire.

How do you think Yorkshire has changed, for the better or worse, in the time you’ve known it? Definitely for the better. You go back to 1962 and Leeds now is not the same city. It’s vibrant and is much more of a financial centre and you only have to look at the big shops who’ve moved here and are coming here. Sheffield has changed too.

Yorkshire people now have the opportunity to do well for themselves.
It’s been a great place for me in the last 50 years. I’ve been very fortunate with my football career playing with great players. I used to sit in the dressing room and think there’s no way we are going to get beaten today– that’s a great feeling.

Marcelo Bielsa named Head Coach

New head coach confirmed.

Leeds United are delighted to announce the appointment of Argentine Marcelo Bielsa in the role of head coach.

Bielsa has previously enjoyed success as head coach of the Argentina and Chile national teams, as well as at club level with Newell’s Old Boys, Athletic Bilbao and Marseille.

The 62-year-old has won top flight league titles in Argentina with Newell's Old Boys and Vélez Sársfield, whilst also guided Bilbao to the UEFA Europa League final and the Copa del Rey final, during his time in charge of the Spanish club.

On his appointment, Bielsa said: “I am delighted to accept the role of head coach at Leeds United.

“It has always been my ambition to work in England and I have had several opportunities to do so during my career, however I have always felt it was important to wait for the right project to come along and so when a club with Leeds United’s history made me an offer, it was impossible to turn down.

“I am excited for the challenge ahead and I look forward to collaborating with Victor, Andrea and Angus, as we work hard to achieve great things at this football club.”

Chairman Andrea Radrizzani said: “I am thrilled to welcome Marcelo and his staff to Leeds United.

“He is a coach that I have admired for many years and when the opportunity arose to bring him to Elland Road, we made it our top priority for the summer.

“Marcelo has a wealth of experience and he will use that to create a new culture and a winning mentality at our football club.

“I would like to thank Victor Orta and Angus Kinnear for all of the hard work that has gone into this appointment and I look forward to progressing together.”

Bielsa has signed a two year deal at Elland Road with the club holding an option for a further year.

Sporting Director: Football's most misunderstood job?

Written by Simon Austin — March 28, 2017

What exactly does a Sporting Director do? And why does the role arouse suspicion and even hostility in this country?

Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo (above, right), better known as Monchi, is revered in Seville. English football has never had a Sporting Director who comes close to him in terms of public affection. We asked Dr Dan Parnell, who leads research on the Master of Sport Directorship course at Manchester Metropolitan University, for his lowdown on the role:

WHAT DOES A SPORTING DIRECTOR DO?

Dan Parnell (right): "There has been some confusion about the role. I think a big reason is the title, which can shift from Director of Football to Technical Director to Performance Director. Many profess to know exactly what a Sporting Director should do, but often the specification is designed and developed ‘on the job’.

There remains no definition of the Sporting Director in academic literature. The following offering aims to give an insight into how the role should work.

Dr Dan Parnell from MMU

The Sporting Director is the person responsible for the overall performance of the various sporting departments, which include first team, Under-21s, academy, scouting, medical and sport science. This responsibility ties hand-in-hand with the Sporting Director’s role, which is to develop and deliver the strategic plan towards achieving success in the club’s sporting aims. The Sporting Director should report directly to the Owner and/or Chief Executive Officer.

The key priorities for the Sporting Director are:

Support the first team and head coach
Maintain and manage a positive working relationship with the owner
Employ the best people within budget as department heads
Oversee the implementation of the club’s DNA and identity a suitable playing philosophy across all teams, from first team to Academy.
Implement and maintain a scouting network
Manage the movement of players in and out of the club
Oversee the academy and development teams (extending to community foundations for talent identification)
Oversee the performance departments including medical and sport science
Oversee the training ground
The Sporting Director is the custodian of the club’s sporting performance and must have:

Football industry knowledge
Business and financial acumen
Ability to lead and develop a high performance culture
Ability to develop and deliver a strategy both strategically and operationally
Understanding of - and the ability to deliver - good governance
Ability to manage change and innovation
Ability to manage research (monitor and evaluate) on relevant performance measures
They are the person employed by the owner or board to be the guardian of the club’s future, to protect their investment and bring on-field success through effective leadership and decision making in the short, medium and long-term."

IS THIS A GOOD MODEL FOR CLUBS TO ADOPT?

"Clubs need to develop a competitive advantage. Through the Sporting Director position, they can develop a strategy to improve both on and off-field performance success.

The increased finances in football have brought great rewards for all involved, including owners. Yet, with great reward, comes great risk: relegation for one,. Gary Neville was quoted as saying “the era of the gaffer is over”. Yes, too right. Things have changed and where they haven’t, they need to if owners want to protect and strengthen their club’s position.

Owners and investors are seeking a new breed of football person who can protect multi-million pound investments but also bring further success and rewards. Yes, the first-team head coach is integral to this, but clubs need a Sporting Director to fulfil a strategic role."

IS THERE RESISTANCE TO THE ROLE IN ENGLAND?

"There has been a huge amount of resistance to the Sporting Director role in the past - and there still is even now. This is because of a lack of understanding about the role and also a lack of trust I think.

I’ll address some of these. A Sporting Director is not someone who picks the team, takes training or chooses the tactics employed. This is the domain of the head coach. It could also be argued that the head coach should have the final say on signings. There is no benefit in forcing an unwanted player on a head coach.

One of my students, who had worked in elite football for more than 20 years, highlighted an issue with using the Director of Football title, as opposed to Sporting Director: “The Director of Football term undermines the manager directly. Who is in charge? It cannot be the Manager, as the Director of Football has the final say – they are the ones who direct football.

"The title should be Sporting Director and this role should be responsible for the strategy of the football club from the first team, through the U21, academy, scouting and recruitment, medical and sport science – and in some cases extended to in some cases the community foundations of football clubs who can play a part in recruitment and talent identification.”

A Sporting Director is someone who, along with their recruitment staff, will present to the head coach the best options for a particular position in addition to all relevant due-diligence material (video, data, stats etc) and the head coach will select his preferred choice. However, as the Sporting Director is the custodian of sporting performance and has the final veto on all sporting matters, he does have the authority to block a signing.

Mistrust of the role could be the result of previous Sporting Director appointments that were not suitably qualified or experienced.

It is my belief - a belief that is shared by many within the industry - that the right person can actually provide the head coach with their best ally and ensure everything around the first team is geared for success.

Compartmentalising the role in relation to the head coach, the Sporting Director is there to implement a strategic scouting network throughout the UK, Europe and even Worldwide in some cases, to identify and recruit the best players within budget.

It is the responsibility of the Sporting Director to ensure the club is at the forefront in terms of best practice, best recruitment and most effective strategies. This will allow the head coach to spend all his time on man-managing the 25-30 players in the squad, taking training, picking the team and selecting the right tactics."

ARE ATTITUDES CHANGING?

"There is a definite growth in the interest and adoption of the Sporting Director role. The smartest will be learning from colleagues in Europe and from the success stories in England. Recently, we have seen Celtic, Rangers, Arsenal and Norwich scouting for their Sporting Directors (with varied expectations and understanding).

Clubs approach the recruitment of a Sporting Director for a number of reasons, including as a figurehead (ie a club legend), a technical director (ie to advise a weaker head coach) or a go-between (ie linking scouts, transfers and deal making).

The Sporting Director should not - and cannot - be viewed as a chief scout or head of recruitment. Their role should be much more significant, reporting directly to the chief executive and looking after recruitment strategies and the delivery of the club’s sporting strategy.

Yet the role seems to be defined by recruitment at the moment. We must remember that for every Kante there is a Kramaric. It is imperative that a Sporting Director highlights the full breadth of work they undertake alongside the immediate demands of success."

WHERE HAS THE ROLE WORKED PARTICULARLY WELL?

"Many commentators cite examples in Europe or in others sports. However, we have seen many different, yet quality examples in England - like Brian Marwood at Manchester City, Dan Ashworth at West Brom and Les Reed at Southampton. Many others in the role are fighting day-to-day to deliver strategic goals amidst a culture hesitant to change as well as poor leadership and governance at executive and owner level.

Recently, Norwich outlined a clear expectation of what their Sporting Director would be tasked with. This transparent approach is welcomed, and no-doubt many will be hoping to see Stuart Webber lead the Canaries on to success."

HOW DO YOU TRAIN SPORTING DIRECTORS ON THE MASTER OF SPORT DIRECTORSHIP COURSE AT MMU?

"Over the past couple of years, I have been fortunate to lead the research module, Sporting Directorship in Practice, as part of Manchester Metropolitan University’s Master of Sport Directorship (MSD). MSD is a two-year, part-time executive level course aimed at professionals who want to gain a unique qualification that prepares them for the role of Sporting Director.

Our students' insight, expertise and experience have helped shape and develop my understanding of the Sporting Director role. They are eager to stress that the position should not just be someone who has had a playing career or been high profile. It should be someone capable of leading an organisation.

Former England cricketer Ashley Giles was a student on the MSD course

The course has been developed in response to need for sport businesses to gain a competitive advantage and the demand for skilled professional, within business acumen and high quality leadership skills to drive positive change and greater performance in sport.

Our students study in part-time blocks, consisting of seminars and high quality guest speakers that make up our masterclass programme. Our students undertake learning that combines the latest thinking on leadership practice, sports governance, innovation and change and research in applied settings.

One of the strengths of the MSD is our high-quality students, who share best practice, collaborate and enhance one another’s learning experience. Here are some of the students from our first of three cohorts:

Joel Roberts, Asst Head Coach England Women u23/Next Gen. Senior Scout for an EFL Club and consultant
Lee Darnborough, Head of Scouting at Norwich FC
David Moss, Assistant Head of 1st Team Scouting, Celtic FC
Michael Appleton, 1st Team Head Coach at Oxford United
Steve Round, Sporting Director at Aston Villa
Becky Easton, Professional Football Players and Previous Assistant General Manager of Doncaster Belles.
Dave Parson, Head of Performance at the ECB
Ashley Giles (right), Sporting Director at Warwickshire County Cricket
I could carry on this list, as each and every student on the cohorts is reputable, successful and has, or is, operating at the top end of sport. You can read more about the course here."

LEEDS UNITED RETAIL EXPANSION ACROSS THE CITY

A number of off field developments have been taking place at Leeds United over the summer ahead of the 2018/19 season, which include exciting additions and refurbishments to our retail stores.

Back in 2016, Leeds United returned to the heart of the city, opening a store in the Merrion Centre and we are pleased to be expanding even further this summer, with two brand new stores.

A new store has this week opened at Leeds Bradford Airport, meaning people jetting away during the summer from ‘Yorkshire’s Airport’ will be able to pick up all their important Leeds United holiday essentials.  The new store at Leeds Bradford Airport will be open from 4:30am-4:30pm every day and is situated after security checks take place, so be sure to check it out, if you are flying from there over the next few months.

A second new outlet will open within the Trinity Centre in Leeds City Centre later this month.  The unit acquired by the club is currently being overhauled and F***ed out, ready for opening.  This means the club will now have two stores in the centre of Leeds, in prime locations.  More details on opening date and store hours for our Trinity store will be announced in due course.

Our superstore at Elland Road is being completely refurbished ahead of the new season and will be closed from Wednesday evening.  A temporary store in Howard’s Bar, opposite the West Stand Ticket Office will be open until its completion.  The refurbishment will bring together the urban styling of the stadium with visual cues of traditional grandeur.  We hope it won't feel like walking into just another football store, it will feel completely unique to Leeds United.

We're also reviewing our range at the Merrion Centre, so look out for new additions and great offers over the coming months.

Of course, you can still access our full Leeds United range at the click of a button, online, by following the link below:
