LUFC Keeper Misses Out On Euro Finals
 
Young Leeds United goalkeeper Eric Grimes will not be featuring in the European under-19 championship finals later this summer after Republic of Ireland finished third in their final qualification group.

Ireland went into their last game against Serbia needing a win to stand any chance of qualifying as group winners but they were no match for the current holders of the competition.

Serbia booked their place in the finals in Hungary next month with a 3-1 win in Ireland as Grimes kept the scoreline respectable in a one-sided contest.

After being in fantastic form in the 2-1 defeat to Turkey in their last games, Grimes was again in great form as Serbia had 24 attempts on goal during the game. The  Republic of Ireland official website Republic of Ireland official website once again highlighted the form of Grimes in the game, 'Leeds United keeper Grimes was impressive throughout the tournament and he was at his best today. He showed his quality in the 23rd minute when he raced out to save at the feet of Veljko Simić.`

Grimes made nine appearances for the under-21 side after making his debut in August 2013.

United’s Under-18s began their 2014/15 campaign with an away day defeat at Ipswich Town.

Under the stewardship of a new Under-18s coach, Jason Blunt, there were encouraging signs in a second half that was dominated by United’s youngsters.

United trailed 1-0 at half time but the home side had luck on their side with Blunt’s team missing a number of chances in the second period but Ipswich snatched victory with a second goal with only 10 minutes of game remaining.

Academy manager and head of coaching Neil Redfearn was in attendance and said: “There were encouraging signs in a game which we dominated for large periods. We were the better side in the second half and to be hit by a sucker punch with 10 minutes to go was hard to take.

“The boys trailed 1-0 at half time but the contest had been quite even. It was the second half where we missed half a dozen glorious chances. Ipswich rode their luck when M'banje hit a post from close range.

"Isaac Assenso, who was a second half substitute, was our best player and his dominance in midfield went a long way to our good second half display."
