The Leeds United starlet who combined international football with GCSE success

ENGLAND’S under 18 goalkeeper Will Huffer has proved he is also a safe pair of hands in the classroom as he secured ten GCSEs including eight As and Bs.

The teenager, who is part of Leeds United’s under 18 side, enjoyed exam success despite sitting several of his exams while playing in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in Bulgaria.

“I sat all sciences, French and both English exams over there,” he said.

“There were a couple of times we had to rearrange exams because of matches – and after we beat Spain I had to sit my physics exam the morning after, which was pretty demanding.”

Will is celebrating his GCSE results with an afternoon’s training at Leeds Utd, ahead of a match against Huddersfield on Saturday.

Will currently plays for the Leeds Utd U18 side and makes regular appearances as part of the England U18 squad. He is hoping to be selected to play for the national side against Holland in September.


He achieved his exam success at St Peter’s School in York.

St Peter’s School, founded in 627AD, is one of the oldest schools in the world.

LUFC Youngster in Republic of Ireland squad
   
Young Leeds United academy player Callum Nicell has been called into the Republic of Ireland under-17 squad for their upcoming friendlies.

The 16-year-old, who featured twice for the Leeds United youth team last season has been called into the squad for two friendlies in Hungary next week.

The midfielder, who represented Republic of Ireland at under-16 level last season, will hope to feature in the friendlies on September 1st and 3rd in Buk and come into the reckoning for their 2016 European under-17 Championship qualifiers against Finland, Malta and Sweden later in the month.

Our Under-18s have made a flying start to the new season, winning all four of their opening games to occupy top spot in Professional Development League 2 North.

After kicking-off the campaign with victories away to Watford and Huddersfield Town, the United youngsters continued their rich vein of form with wins over Bolton on Saturday and Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.

Goals from Tom Pearce (2) and Mallik Wilks saw Bolton beaten 3-2 at Thorp Arch, while Moise Kroma (2) and Samuel Ammisah netted in Tuesday’s 3-1 win at Forest.

Next up for the U18s is Saturday's visit of Crystal Palace.

U18s team vs Bolton:  Huffer, Taylor, Vann, Turnbull, Downing, Vieira, Rollinson, Oduor, Pearce, Wilks, Knight. Subs: Richardson, Croft, Hill, Ferguson, Sterling.

New We All Love Leeds writer Ryan Pinnick picks out some of the rising stars at Lufc and proves that the likes of Cook, Mowatt and Byram may not be the last to star in a white shirt.


Neil Redfearn once said that Alex Mowatt, Sam Byram, Lewis Cook and Charlie Taylor are the tip of the Iceberg when it comes to the Academy. These four have proven to be fantastic players for Leeds and have at times we have had to rely on them to save a team often filled with senior pro's.

But are they the best our academy has to offer?

Kalvin Phillips has had a taste of first team action and has proven he can hold his own. Chris Dawson has also had a taste of first team action, along with Lewis Walters, Lewie Coyle and Alex Purver knocking on the door. However, it's the even younger players who are really tipped for greatness.

Last seasons Under 14's won 27 out of 29 games, beating the likes of Manchester United and Everton along the way. This team included a player named Theo Hudson, who scored 17 goals. The development of Hudson has forced scouts from the top teams in England to turn up at Thorpe Arch and attempt to poach him from Leeds. The right winger has represented England above his age group and was nicknamed 'Mini Messi' by former academy manager Neil Redfearn.

Other players to look out for include players like Tom Pearce, who played at left back against Chelsea in the Fa Youth Cup last season and impressed everyone watching. However, it is further up the field that he is really starting to show his potential. Pearce has been playing on the wing for the u18s and u21s and this has resulted in him scoring some spectactular goals.

Others to keep an eye out for are 1st team scholars Jovanni Sterling, a strong tough tackling ball playing CB and Clarke Oduor, an attacking midfielder with pace great control and a good finish.

All Leeds fans can agree that we would hate to lose Cook/Mowatt/Taylor and Byram but one thing is for sure.

There are plenty more where they came from.

Our Under-18s maintained their impressive start to the season with an emphatic 9-2 victory at home to QPR on Saturday.

Striker Mallik Wilks took his 2015/16 tally to seven from six games after a four-goal haul at Thorp Arch, while wing-back Tom Pearce hit his second brace of the new campaign. The other goals came from Mike Taylor, Clarke Oduor and Lewis Knight.

The youngsters occupy top spot in Professional Development League 2 North after winning six of their opening seven games.

Team: Richardson, Taylor, Sterling, Rollinson (Hill 69), Downing, Turnbull, Vieira, Pearce, Oduor (Croft 69), Wilks, Amissah (Knight 45). Subs not used: Huffer, Ferguson.

Our Under-18s sealed their progression to the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup with a thrilling 3-2 victory away to Brentford on Tuesday evening.

The United youngsters will now host Manchester City in the next round after overcoming the Bees in a five-goal contest.

This season’s top goalscorer for the U18s, young striker Mallik Wilks, opened the scoring at Griffin Park on what would prove to be a memorable 17th birthday for the forward.

Wilks’ deflected effort after just 20 minutes looped over the Brentford goalkeeper to give Leeds a slender advantage which they were able to take into the interval.

But the hosts managed to hit back shortly after the restart, Kyjuon Marsh-Brown firing home an equaliser after turning on the edge of the area.

Henry Rollinson fired the United youngsters back into the lead from range with just under 20 minutes remaining on the clock, but Brentford soon pulled level as Zach Birse found the net following a corner.

However, within a matter of seconds of conceding, Leeds went up the other end and substitute Tyla Bell grabbed what proved to be the winner after meeting Matty Downing’s low cross inside the area.
