http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/sport/leeds-united/latest-whites-news/leeds-united-i-inspired-charlie-taylor-breakthrough-cellino-1-7262054

But despite that, the Italian voiced his anger at the cost of the academy at Leeds, saying the wage bill for young players there amounted to £1.2m - heightened by the fear of losing talent to Premier League clubs.

“I don’t know the English rules,” Cellino said. “I just see that we spend more than £1.2m a year just to play the academy players’ wages.

“No way in the world you pay those academy wages. I ask ‘why are we paying that?’ And they tell me because otherwise they can go to someone else.

“We have a problem. We have a good player from Leeds, he’s been here from nine years old and is nearly 16 now. Apparently one team from Manchester is coming to take the player. I might start the academy at 16 years old because if we do the work and then they go to Manchester because they have a couple more pounds than Leeds, that’s really wrong.

@PhilHayYEP: Spoke to Adam Pearson yesterday about Leeds United's willingness to continue funding the academy. Article online a bit later.

@PhilHayYEP: Been a few appointments in past three weeks: Daral Pugh as head of academy coaching, John Anderson as U18s coach and Andy Gray as U16s coach

@PhilHayYEP: Gray is obviously ex-Leeds striker. Pugh worked in the academy previously under Neil Thompson. He and Anderson have both come from Hull City

@PhilHayYEP: Pearson says a U21s coach is needed and will be appointed shortly. Says he expects Leeds to keep category 2 academy status.

Leeds United: We’ve no plans to scale back Thorp Arch academy – Pearson

Adam Pearson.
Phil Hay
16:39 Wednesday 05 August 2015

Leeds United’s academy is the club’s most sacred cow. Attacks on it provoke fierce defence of its work and understandably so in light of the centre’s history.

If the drip of players into the first team was drying up then support for United’s development scheme might wane but this weekend on the first day of the Championship season, Uwe Rosler’s squad will contain at least four academy products and probably five. As Neil Redfearn said last season, the production line is an asset at a time when Leeds don’t own too many.

There is nonetheless a perception that United’s academy is under threat. Massimo Cellino, the club’s owner, has long complained about a training complex which costs more than £600,000 year to rent. Back in May, and annoyed by the loss of a young prospect to Manchester City, Cellino suggested that he was seriously considering scrapping the lower age groups at Thorp Arch and working with players from the age of 16 up.

Later this summer, Redfearn – Leeds’ long-standing youth-team coach who worked as head coach in the second half of last season – resigned from his post as academy boss, saying his position had been made “untenable” by United.

The 50-year-old was entitled to retake control of the academy following the end of his tenure as first-team boss but the collapse of his relationship with Cellino left him vulnerable. Upon resigning, Redfearn said an invitation from Adam Pearson, Leeds’ executive director, to stay involved at Thorp Arch had not been “genuine”.

The impression created was that of an unseemly mess in which the academy was liable to suffer but Pearson disputes the suggestion that United are giving up on it. “It makes me laugh when I hear that,” he said. “Our academy budget is as good as any other club in the Championship. It’s not at all under-funded.”

What matters more is whether that investment will continue but on the evidence of the past month the structure of the academy is not being allowed to decay. Leeds have recruited Daral Pugh – once assistant to United’s former academy manager, Neil Thompson – from Hull City to act as their head of academy coaching. John Anderson, who has also worked with Hull’s youth teams and is well known to Pearson, will coach Leeds’ Under-18s next season. The job of Under-16s coach has gone to ex-United striker Andy Gray.

Jason Blunt took charge of the club’s development squad last season after Redfearn’s promotion to the position of head coach but while Blunt remains on the staff, coaching the Under-18s with Anderson, Cellino intends to appoint a new Under-21 manager shortly, effectively filling the vacancy that Redfearn’s resignation created. Neil Sullivan, meanwhile, has gone back to his old post as academy goalkeeping coach.

“We’ve got one position left to fill and that’ll be done very soon,” Pearson said. “I know Daral and John and they’ve both been at Hull’s academy. They’re very good, credible appointments in those jobs.

“It’s good to have a couple of ex-Leeds players involved too. It helps with the ethos and the understanding of what it means to play for the club. People don’t necessarily see this from the outside but the idea that the academy’s being down-graded or under-funded is ridiculous. It’s simply not the case.”

Redfearn’s exit last month was bitter and acrimonious, and frustrating a support who in the main had warmed to him during his time as head coach and respected his historical input at Thorp Arch. The former Barnsley midfielder is expected to take legal action against the club. There have been other changes to the academy staff too. Lucy Ward, the club’s head of education and welfare and Redfearn’s partner, has been suspended from that post. Long-time academy employee Steve Holmes is also believed to have lost his job.

Asked about Redfearn’s departure, Pearson said: “Look, I think as a club we’re moving on. Neil said what he said in the papers and that’s fine but our focus has really been on making sure the academy got what it needed this summer.

“I’m not going to pretend that the academy and the staff there haven’t done excellent work over the years. Its record speaks for itself. But it’s important to remember that the success of the academy – and the club for that matter – doesn’t just come down to one individual, or two or three.”

The Thorp Arch academy achieved category two status under the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) in 2014, passing an audit after overcoming cash-flow problems in the final weeks of Gulf Finance House’s time as club owner. Leeds are reassessed annually and are required to maintain a certain level of investment and staffing in order to receive around £500,000 in central funding.

Pearson said there was no plan to scale back the academy from category two status and admitted he was sceptical about the idea of Leeds leaving Thorp Arch to escape a punitive rent.

“That (the loss of category two status) has never been suggested to me or discussed,” he said. “It’s very much the plan to stay as category two.

“We get audited every year and there are certainly things that we’ll need to do before the next audit comes round but that will be addressed. Academies are all about ethos and facilities and I mean this seriously when I say we’re protecting all of that.

“As for Thorp Arch, I can’t see us leaving. In my view you can’t build a decent new academy for less than £15m. I don’t think that’s where we need to be spending money right now.”

Pearson said Cellino’s comments about abandoning the lower age groups were an impulsive response to the loss of a teenager to Manchester City’s cash-rich and state-of-the-art academy. Leeds received around £100,000 in return but saw the fee as a poor consolation. City and Liverpool are currently showing an interest in other players.

“I think what Massimo said was a knee-jerk reaction to the thought of two or three really good youngsters leaving,” Pearson said. “It hurts because you’ve got talented kids going to clubs with bigger budgets when – on the evidence of our first team – they really would be better staying at Leeds.

“I’ve always taken that view and with someone like Lewis Cook, there’s no better path for him than to play week in, week out at Leeds and try to get this club promoted. Then when you get to the Premier League you can name your ticket. We’ve got a wealth of talent at our academy – a real wealth of talent – and that’s proven by the scouts who try to crawl all over Thorp Arch.”

Ser ut som om sentrale personer er luket ut av akademiet sammen med Redfearn:

Et glimrende innlegg om U12-14 som er på cup i Galway:

Leeds academy coach Blunt impressed with Galway Cup outing
By Ferdia Fallon Verbruggen
Published: August 07, 2015

On the second day of the Macron Galway Cup, Leeds United’s 2002 Elite squad were hoping to continue their great run of form that saw them win both their opening games against North Tipperary and a tough North-Eastern Counties side. They did what they set out to do and put three past Mayo without reply in their early match before beating Clare by a scoreline of four goals to one later on.

Along with Scott Gardner, Jason Blunt, the current U18’s coach at Leeds United, was in the dugout to oversee the squad being put to the test. After coming through the Leeds academy to make his debut under Howard Wilkinson, Jason later returned to coach underage sides before becoming the U18 coach and the Development Squad manager in the pre-season of the 2014/15 season. During the season, he became the Head of Academy Coaching when Neil Redfearn became manager of the first team and also assisted the former Leeds boss during the last few games of the Championship season. After a summer reshuffle, Jason returned to coaching the under 18’s.

After the game against Clare, I spoke to Jason Blunt and on how the Leeds team have handled their opposition so far, he said, “It’s a different type of game we’ve found over here, we’re not used to teams predominately being quite so direct instead of trying to pass it through us so that’s been a difficult challenge compared to what we’re used to.”

In their second game on Wednesday, Leeds went three-nil up against North-Eastern Counties before conceding two late goals, that NEC’s play deserved it must be said, and while Jason found the goals to be “a bit sloppy”, he was pleased that the team “seemed to have learnt from that” and he added that, “they’re defending a lot better now and we seem to have sorted it out.”

The coaching staff have been pleased with how the squad have got on, especially given that seven of the sixteen players in the squad were born in 2003 and so are playing a year up. Despite being a year behind their opponents, Jason said “it doesn’t mean we’re not capable because, in and out of possession, they’ll have a good understanding of the game and technically they’re all excellent.”

An interesting note to take when watching the Leeds team play was how often players changed positions or roles and how every game the tactics were tweaked. After I raised this, Jason said that the coaches “just like to try and put them out of their comfort zone.” If games aren’t going their way, the team can easily shift their style of play and shape as Jason explains.

“We changed it this morning as we were struggling with the pace of the game so we went 4-1-4-1 and then this afternoon we played with a diamond and overloaded the midfield to try and get an extra pass in,” before he added on his players’ adaptability that, “the boys are quite capable of playing in different positions, which is good
.”

The academy at Leeds United has been shown to be successful with at least five academy products, Lewis Cook, Sam Byram, Charlie Taylor, Alex Mowatt, and Kalvin Phillips, to be involved in the first team this upcoming season while others, like Lewis Walters and Lewis Coyle, will be in and around the squad and Jason spoke of how this influenced the bigger picture.

He said that although they lose the odd players to other clubs, though “not bigger clubs”, he says, “as there’s nobody bigger than Leeds United as far as we’re concerned”, the players “know there is something at the end of the road, the kids here in the U12’s and U13’s, they know that if they stay with us, they’ve got a great chance of being in the first team and that’s why we do ever so well but credit to the [first team] boys, they play some great stuff.”

With stories going about that Leeds owner Massimo Cellino wanted to close the academy below u16 level after hearing a young player left for another club, you’d have wanted him to be amongst the spectators over these past two days in Salthill Devon.  Having seen the team play in their four matches so far, I can only repeat my sentiments after the interview; that the future is very bright indeed.

Fredag 7.august:

Leeds vs Donegal i semifinalen for årskull 2002, 1-1, 5-4 på straffer!  :)

In the last four Elite Boys Semi-Finals, Belvedere put five past Kerry while Donegal defended well to earn a 1-1 draw with Leeds United. In the penalties that followed, it looked like Donegal would win after Leeds missed their third spotkick but the Leeds netminder made two great saves for Donegal’s fifth and sixth penalty to see them through to the final of the Cup.

Eddie Tobin: Best of luck to Leeds in 2002 elite cup final today. They know they were in a game against us- we narrowly lost on pens in sudden death. Great performance by Donegal 2002 squad. Well done boys

Seiersmålet skåret av Emmanuel Misser (eller Amissah - vanskelig å høre) etter ca 14 min. Flere gode målsjanser til Leeds.
