Have your say!

Leeds head coach Neil Redfearn is confident he will be given time to make his mark after watching his reign begin with a 3-1 defeat at Cardiff.

Redfearn’s full-time appointment on an initial 12-month contract was confirmed a matter of hours before kick-off at Cardiff City Stadium.

He is already the third man to be tasked with leading the Yorkshire club this season by owner Massimo Cellino.

The 49-year-old did not get the start he wanted. Goals from Bruno Manga and Federico Macheda had put Cardiff in control after a quiet first half.

Alex Mowatt’s well-taken effort got Leeds back into the game, only for a defensive mix-up between keeper Marco Silvestri and Guiseppe Bellusci to gift Kenwyne Jones Cardiff’s third.

But Redfearn revealed he had sought assurances from Cellino, following the brief tenures of Dave Hockaday and Darko Milanic, that he is not a short-term appointment.

He said: “I spoke to Massimo and we talked about things going forward, which was a key point for me.

“I asked if he sees me as the future and he said he does, which is great for me.

“I have been here six years in total and have put in a lot of hard work. There is the caveat that I can go back to the academy if it does not work out, but I am very proud.”

Of his side’s performance, he added: “It was not a dazzling performance but for an hour it was a good away performance. We limited them and we countered well.

“But that period after half-time was where the damage was done. We gave ourselves a chance pulling one back, and I thought we might get something, but you cannot legislate for their third.”

Tips om ny assistent:

@PhilHayYEP: Redfearn still working on appointing an assistant. The name which keeps getting mentioned to me is Huddersfield Town's Steve Thompson. #lufc

Thompson har spilt med Redders i Bolton, har fortid fra akademiet og har lang fartstid som trener.   8)

I scored 24 goals helping my side win promotion back to the Premier League aged just 22. Then in my first season in the top flight I had bagged an impressive 15 goals by the end of January. My form earned me an England call-up. Am I a £35m striker? No. I am Michael Ricketts, February 2002.

Ydmykende.

Nå vil Cellino ha Redfearn i 10 år.  Ha-ha.

Leeds boss Redfearn confirms assistant decision is made.

Leeds United head coach Neil Redfearn has confirmed he hopes to be able to announce his choice of assistant this week.

After more than a week in the role as permanent boss, Redfearn has been attempting to secure an assistant to work under him, but such decisions can take time.

Speaking after Leeds' 3-1 win over Blackpool, he said that a decision has finally been approved, pending a club announcement and official paperwork.

He told BBC Radio Leeds: "We've got the green light, hopefully by after the weekend it'll be all sorted out and I'll be able to tell you who it is."

Redfearn is reluctant to announce beforehand who his assistant could be, in case the deal falls through. The complexity of the appointment could be added to if his choice is currently working at a club and needs to negotiate his exit.

Should he declare his choice prematurely, it would leave the next option in the awkward position of it being known he was not the first in line.

He seems confident however, and Redfearn went onto add that he refused to rule out bringing in new signings over the coming weeks.

Citing the need for a strong bench, despite Leeds having a large squad, Redfearn is of the belief that teams they have faced in recent weeks have had stronger options, and would consider bringing in new faces.

"Possibly, because I think these lads need some help. I think that we looked stronger from the bench today, when you can bring Rudy Austin on, it makes a difference.

"That's no disrespect to any of the other lads who have been, but other people we have played in recent games have had strong benches, it's a real 17 man game now its not just an 11."

It shows he doesn't have much confidence in the likes of Luke Murphy and Michael Tonge to contribute, but whether he can get the type of player he desires in on the loan market is another matter.

Premier League sides are most amenable to loaning out young players, which Leeds have plenty of at the moment; they may just have to take a gamble of a more experienced star who has not been playing much at his club, if they can find one.

Leeds United: squad right behind boss Redfearn

Jason Pearce
by Leon Wobschall
Published on the
11 November
2014
00:31

LEEDS UNITED captain Jason Pearce has expressed his fervent hope that Neil Redfearn remains the club’s permanent head coach for the long-haul – and feels he should have remained in charge following his last caretaker stint.

Redfearn presided over his first victory as full-time head coach against Blackpool on Saturday, United’s first win in nine matches.

Leeds’ previous three points came in a 3-0 home derby success over Huddersfield Town in the final game of Redfearn’s third stint as temporary boss back on September 20.

While happy to accede to United president Massimo Cellino’s wish for him to revert to his post running the academy when Darko Milanic was handed the reins, Redfearn admitted his appetite had been whetted by his successful four-match spell in charge, which yielded 10 points from a possible 12 in an unbeaten run.

After the Milanic era ended abruptly after just 32 days in charge on October 25 – with the Slovenian failing to win any of his six matches at the helm – United promoted Redfearn to run the first-team on a full-time basis and Pearce is hoping it signals a rise up the Championship table.

Pearce told the YEP: “For me, I didn’t see why we changed it. We were winning and he (Redfearn) had done well and I felt he could have (kept) the momentum we had going and I think a lot of people felt that.

“We changed it and it didn’t work and now he has come back in and I think the fans can see he is getting the lads playing again and wanting to play for that shirt.

“Hopefully we can go from strength to strength.

“He is a good coach and hopefully he will stay for the long term.

“Neil has given us that confidence which was needed. To be honest, the training has been brilliant and really high-tempo and I think it showed in the Blackpool game that we are training hard and getting our rewards.

“It is only the start, but hopefully we can go from strength to strength and move up that table.”

“He is a great guy to have around. When there’s other managers in, he is in the academy, so he is always around the place and is really personable and easy to go up to and talk to.

“That is good for the lads. He has come in and people can go talk to him and he helps people out.”

Pearce is the first to acknowledge that United’s alarming run prior to Saturday’s victory over rock-bottom Blackpool was not good enough, with Saturday’s

win representing a first positive step in getting back in supporters’ good books after a dispiriting sequence.

He said: “At the end of the day, we know the fans expect a lot here. But as players, we know we can do better than we have in our recent performances.

“So it was important to get the three points.”

In the absence of the suspended Giuseppe Bellusci, Pearce lined up alongside Liam Cooper, with the pair producing a solid enough defensive showing in the heart of the back four against Lee Clark’s side.

And Pearce believes Cooper did his chances of a regular run in the side no harm at all.

The former Portsmouth and Bournemouth defender added: “I have always said this; I rate Coops really highly. He’s great and while he is only a young lad and still learning, he is a great player.

“I was delighted he got the goal on Saturday and I thought we did well at the back together, so we will see what happens.”

Cooper was named in the SkyBet Football League Team of the Week following his display at the weekend.

A word about football, if football is allowed so much as a word this week. Saturday’s victory over Derby County got us thinking about the last time Leeds United produced a performance of that ilk, against a team so in-form and accomplished.

Cup games excepted, you might have to go back as far as a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace at Elland Road in November 2012, the week when Gulf Finance House’s takeover of Leeds was agreed. The two events were considered to be linked – not least because the victory appeared from nowhere.

Last weekend was slightly different. In Neil Redfearn’s opinion, a game like that had been coming for a while. But why the marked improvement in a team who were sorely mediocre before he took charge? Here are five reasons:

1) Leeds are playing their best players.

It sounds obvious until you remember that Alex Mowatt didn’t play once until August 30. At least one previous head coach preferred players like Casper Sloth and Luke Murphy to Adryan and Lewis Cook. The repair of Sam Byram’s form was essential and was only ever going to happen by giving him games and there was never a better alternative to Stephen Warnock at left-back. The current line-up stands up to scrutiny.

2) United’s full-backs are making the diamond work.

Every coach employed by Massimo Cellino since the summer has used a midfield diamond. Only Redfearn has managed to use it successfully. One of the main differences for him is that his full-backs, Byram and Warnock, are providing the width and penetration needed to compensate for the absence of wingers in a narrow midfield. The second goal against Derby was a case in point – made by Warnock’s overlapping run.

3) The midfield is more mobile.

David Hockaday’s midfield on the first day of the season? Murphy, Rudy Austin and Michael Tonge, with Noel Hunt ahead of them. Redfearn’s midfield last weekend? Mowatt, Cook, Adryan and Tommaso Bianchi. It’s not that the alternatives offer Leeds nothing, but mobility is so important in the Championship. It’s a reason why Derby, with the likes of Will Hughes in their side, have so often given United the runaround.

4) Alex Mowatt.

He has never played better than this, or not for United’s first team. Last season other clubs concentrated on tying up Ross McCormack in the knowledge that no-one else in United’s side would score. Mowatt’s form is drawing attention away from Mirco Antenucci, Souleymane Doukara and Adryan and creating a multi-pronged attack. He’s growing up rapidly.

5) Stephen Warnock.

For a while it was hard to decide whether Warnock wanted to be here or whether Leeds wanted him here but he’s starting to look like a cut above. His knack of appearing in time to sort out desperate situation is uncanny and he looks more agile and fit than he has before. He offers some priceless leadership too. The real point of interest with Warnock is that his contract expires next summer. Time for talks?
