A trio of the Championship's most high-profile clubs have been banned from signing players for the remainder of the current campaign after falling foul of Financial Fair Play Regulations.

Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers are the three teams in question; the news was confirmed on Twitter by Dan Roan of BBC Sport:

The Football League released its own statement confirming the “FFP embargo,” which forbids any of the aforementioned sides from taking part in any incoming transfer activity in the January window and for the rest of the season.

The statement notes that after an investigation of their respective FFP submissions, all of the clubs in question exceeded the maximum deviation amount of £8 million during the 2013/14 season.

In addition to Leeds, Forest and Blackburn, the Football League has also confirmed there are other clubs that they are in discussions regarding their submissions and they could potentially lead to comparable sanctions.

Innenfor visse rammer?

If Leeds have fewer than 24 established players (which they do) they can sign players for no fee and a max of £600k in wages a year pro rata

Phil Hay ‏@PhilHayYEP  1 tfor 1 time siden
So basically they can still sign players on more than £10k a week. Can make loan signings but not pay a loan fee.

Får håpe det er riktig. Vi trenger 3-4 muskelbunter inn for å berge plassen.

@PhilHayYEP: So, Leeds United January transfer embargo confirmed by the Football League. But as per Saturday's column, signings can still be made. #lufc

@PhilHayYEP: Leeds can still maintain a 24-man squad. That quota doesn't include U21s or senior players with less than five appearances. #lufc

@PhilHayYEP: If Leeds have fewer than 24 established players (which they do) they can sign players for no fee and a max of £600k in wages a year pro rata

@PhilHayYEP: So basically they can still sign players on more than £10k a week. Can make loan signings but not pay a loan fee.

@PhilHayYEP: Leeds would also be permitted to sign an emergency goalkeeper. #lufc

@PhilHayYEP: Football League say players over 21 with fewer than five competitive starts for the club ever (not this season) are exempt from total of 24.

@PhilHayYEP: So by my reckoning, Leeds have 16 players who fall into the 24 quota. They would be Antenucci, Austin, Bellusci, Berardi, Bianchi...

@PhilHayYEP: Cooper, Doukara, Morison, Murphy, Norris, Pearce, Sharp, Silvestri, Sloth, Tonge, Warnock. Plus Hunt if he comes back. #lufc

@PhilHayYEP: Sorry, make that 17 - forgot Aidy White. Wootton will also be another if he comes back.

@PhilHayYEP: Zac Thompson also has 10 starts and his birthday just falls outside the cut-off so he counts towards the 24 too. So that's 20 players.

 :)

Embargoed! Sort of…
TSS  December 15, 2014  Leeds United 12 Comments

Leeds United were today hit by the not-in-the-least-bit-surprising news that the club are to be punished for failing to comply with Financial Fair Play rules last season and will be subject to a transfer embargo in January 2015.

In a statement published earlier today, The Football League confirmed Leeds United along with Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers failed to operate within the £8m loss allowance during 2013/14, outlining the restrictions that would now be in place for them until at least the end of this season, at which point the League will review the clubs books again to see if the financial situation has improved.

The conditions under which the transfer ban will be enforced make for interesting reading as they offer some hope of new arrivals at Elland Road, albeit on a free transfer basis and with a fairly restrictive wage cap in place.

Clubs will be prohibited from registering any new professional players (permanent contract or loan) unless they have:

•    24 or fewer established players (players aged 21 or over that have made at least 5 starting appearances for the club).

Based on the appearance stats over on WAFLL, Leeds appear to meet this condition.

Despite having a fairly large squad, Leeds have started just 20 players more than 5 times this season and a couple of those are below 21. If this condition includes previous seasons – which it may well do as the wording is unclear – we’d be a bit closer to the limit, but still have room to operate as far as I can tell.

January being a difficult enough time to sign players without these conditions in place, the real sticking point could be the ban on transfer fees and restriction on wages outlined below.

Where clubs have fewer than 24 established players, they will only be permitted to sign players in the following circumstances (with the player in question being added to the club’s list of established players regardless of his age or previous playing experience):

•    Where the employee costs of a player being signed are less than £600,000 per annum (or pro-rata if signed on a shorter contract).

Where clubs have 24 established players, they will be permitted to trade on a ‘one out, one in’ basis but only if the employee costs of the player coming in to the club are no more than whichever is the lower amount of:

•    75% of the equivalent costs of the player going out.
•    Or a maximum of £600,000 per annum (or pro-rata if signed on shorter contract)

£600,000 is a reasonable enough salary at Championship level and Cellino seems quite fond of loaning players with a view to buying them later so transfer fees are easily circumvented, the trouble is that such deals generally seem to involve a loan fee that the club would presumably be unable to pay, but this is something that can be worked around in negotiations I’m sure.

To sum up, the embargo will make things more difficult but in no way prevents us from adding new players to the squad making the embargo more of a hindrance than a blockade.

Here we go again...

Leeds face transfer embargo over £800,000 contract dispute with winger Cameron Stewart
The club are accused of failing to pay money owed the 24-year-old after pulling out of signing him last season and the Football League may now intervene

Leeds are facing a transfer embargo over their bitter contract dispute with former winger Cameron Stewart.

The Yorkshire club are accused of failing to pay money owed to the 24-year-old after they pulled out of a deal to sign him last season.

Leeds have so far refused to comment.

But the PFA are set to ask the Football League to prevent them signing players this summer if they do not meet costs of around £800,000 awarded to Stewart after a hearing in May.

Stewart, now at Ipswich, is claiming loss of earnings and the difference between his salary at Leeds and the wages he is now on at Ipswich.

He moved to Elland Road on an emergency loan from Hull midway through last season. His contract was with a view to a permanent three-year deal.

The Football League, however, returned the signed paperwork to Leeds after problems were flagged up with it.

Former managing director David Haigh had signed the contract, but as he had left the club in April he was therefore no longer registered as an ‘authorised signatory’.

Instead of re-signing the contract, Leeds' new owner Massimo Cellino pulled the plug on the deal.
