Leeds United: Hadi Sacko won’t cost the earth – fee agreed 0
By Graham Smeaton on Dec 30, 2016
When the sheepish looking footballer turned up at the back of the photograph on the Ireland tour, questions were asked as to who the snazzy-haired youngster was. Soon those questions were answered.
It was Hadi Sacko, a player Leeds United had managed to grab hold of from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon. He was highly-thought of when Sporting paid £850,000 for the exciting, and rapid youngster who had been turning heads for FC Girondins Bordeaux.
It wasn’t long before stories started to emerge about just how much it would supposedly cost Leeds United should they wish to bring the one-time France Under-20 player to Elland Road, the price was frankly frightening. The release clause in his Sporting contract was a reported €60m (£56.5m), that sort of fee being de rigeur for the top-class players going to Premier League teams.
Whilst Leeds might have Premier League aspirations, they cannot pay that sort of Premier League fee, but according to an article in French publication Sud Ouest the Whites don’t have to. Speaking to the fleet-footed forward after the 1-1 drawn game against Aston Villa last night, Sud Ouest ran an interview where Sacko opened up on his time at Leeds, saying he was “starting to become a real Englishman.â€
Questioned by the French publication on his time at Leeds, Sacko said that “everything is going well,†saying that he felt English football suits him due to the nature of the game here. Mentioning the way the game is played, the Corbeil-Essonnes born forward said: “it is football with plenty of space. I imagined that would suit me.†Suit him it has as the 22-year-old has already, in a half-season, overtaken the 51 successful dribbles achieved by Leeds’ Lewis Cook last season by completing his 52nd dribble last night at Villa Park.
Perhaps the most telling reply to Sud Ouest’s questions was when they reminded him that he was only on loan. In reply to this statement, Sacko’s words will give a level of hope to those Leeds fans seeing the youngster as a polished gem in the making. Admitting that it was true he was on loan, Sacko brought up the issue of the big release clause. He said that “the two clubs have agreed on a purchase option that is acceptable, much lower than the release clause on my arrival at Sporting. If Leeds decide to buy me, it will not cost so much.â€
In-form Leeds, currently sitting in fourth place in the Sky Bet Championship, next take on South Yorkshire side Rotherham who sit pinned to the bottom of the table at Elland Road on January 2nd.
