Three things learned as Leeds beat Myanmar National Team

Will Butcher3 hours ago
Leeds earned a 2-0 win over Myanmar's national side on Friday afternoon.

Paul Heckingbottom watched on as Leeds United earned a comfortable 2-0 win over Myanmar's national side on Friday afternoon thanks to goals from Ryan Edmondson and Jay-Roy Grot.

Edmondson opened the scoring after capitalising on a loose ball following a Caleb Ekuban shot to round the goalkeeper and score, before Grot silenced the critics with an exquisite curling effort from the edge of the area.

Here are three things we learned from the win:

Pearce has potential, but Denton has class

Tom Pearce has broken into the Leeds side of late under Paul Heckingbottom, and certainly excited Leeds fans with a goal against the manager's former side Barnsley. But his performances in Myanmar have been largely below par.

Instead, Tyler Denton has impressed on the left side of defence more so, proving more effective in attacking areas and whipping in some dangerous crosses. Pearce's ability on the ball, though, should be questioned.

Shackleton is the next star

Heckingbottom has brought through the likes of Pearce, Edmondson, Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Hugo Diaz and Paudie O'Connor of late, which has generated plenty of enthusiasm ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

But the next young star to deserve a chance is 18-year-old playmaker Jamie Shackleton, who rattled the bar in the dying moments of the 2-0 win. Close control, vision, pace and skill, the central midfielder mirrors the kind of style that David Silva portrays at Manchester City. Certainly one to watch.

Don't write off Grot... yet

The Dutch winger has been criticised all season since his £1.5million move from NEC Nijmegen, and a lacklustre performance against the Myanmar All-Stars on Wednesday underlined that.

But he came off the bench to shine on Friday, looking like a different player. A neat first touch, pace and drive, Grot ended Leeds' AYA Bank Tour with a wonderful goal that could give him the emphasis to kick on at Elland Road.

Leeds United asked the Foreign Office to be publicly supportive of the club's Myanmar tour - but was turned down

Leeds United asked the Foreign Office to issue a statement supportive of the football club’s highly controversial trip to Myanmar but the request was turned down, official emails released to The Yorkshire Post show.

On April 24, the day the club announced its tour to the south-east Asian country where the regime has been accused by the United Nations of carrying out ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims, a Leeds United representative telephoned a Foreign Office (FCO) official and complained about “frustrating” criticism.

In an email released by the FCO under Freedom of Information laws but with the names of individuals redacted, the official said that the Leeds United representative asked if the Government department could issue a statement recognising that players, coaches and staff intended to conduct outreach work in the community during the trip last month.

But the official explained that doing so would not be in line with FCO policy.

Leeds United accused of 'assisting a brutal regime' by fan MP after announcing post-season tour of Myanmar

Leeds United was branded “morally corrupt” by Shadow Sports Minister Rosena Allin-Khan for travelling to Myanmar, also known as Burma, while a group of five Leeds MPs urged the club to reconsider as the “deeply inappropriate trip”.

Senior Labour MP John Mann and Liberal Democrat leader in the House of Lords Lord Newby - both Leeds fans - also criticised the tour.

And Amnesty International branded it “odd”.

The official’s email, addressed to other unnamed people at the FCO, reads: “I took a call this afternoon from [REDACTED] at Leeds United Football Club.

“He said Leeds United had already been receiving criticism following their announcement this morning of their tour to Burma in May.

“It was frustrating as they intended to get out into the community and try to connect with ordinary people and do some good. Could the FCO issue a statement recognising this and encouraging them?

“I said that while we had a policy of promoting responsible business by British firms in Burma, we didn’t normally issue statements about individual companies’ plans. He accepted this.”

The Leeds United representative also told the official that he had been aware of the political situation in Myanmar before announcing the post-season tour.

Decision to tour Burma defended by Leeds United chief Angus Kinnear

Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani repeatedly defended the post-season tour to Myanmar amid fierce criticism, telling the BBC at the time: “We’re just coming here to play football with our friends from the local football federation. We are not against any government, we are not discriminating (against) anyone, we are against violence and we’re just playing football and bringing joy to the people. We are not making any money out of this game.”

The club played two matches in the country, losing the first 2-1 to a Myanmar National League all stars team in Yangon on May 9, before beating the country’s national side 2-0 in Mandalay on May 11.

Leeds United: Radrizzani's Eleven Sports secure TV rights for Myanmar League

LEEDS UNITED chairman Andrea Radrizzani's Eleven Sports have secured a nine-year global deal for the TV rights of the Myanmar National Football League - six weeks after United's contentious post-season tour.

The deal comes a month and a half after United's controversial post-season tour of Myanmar which was heavily criticised due to political tensions and violence in the country whose government have been accused of ethnic cleansing against Muslims.

Amid the widescale criticism of the tour from MPs and charities, Radrizzani defended his decision to take the club to the Southeast Asian country and denied that personal business interests were behind the controversial tour.

He told the BBC while in Myanmar: "We’re just coming here to play football with our friends from the local football federation. We are not against any government, we are not discriminating (against) anyone, we are against violence and we’re just playing football and bringing joy to the people.

"We are not making any money out of this game.”

Asked about his business interests, Radrizzani said: “Yes with other companies. I have a different interest and I have a good relationship with the president of the federation (the Myanmar FA). We are starting a project on the football pitch as well as the media. We’re happy to visit our friends."

United's friendlies on the tour against a Myanmar National League All-Stars team and the Myanmar national side were organised by Aser, Radrizzani’s investment firm, and the Southeast Asian country now becomes Eleven Sports' 11th market.

The new service in Myanmar will be branded as MY SPORTS which, from 2019, will deliver all 132 matches on a new linear service via satellite and OTT platforms through to the end of 2027.

At present, only a third of MNL matches are shown live.

Danny Menken, group managing director, of Eleven Sports said: "Myanmar is our fourth new market this year and our eleventh in total, which is completely in line with our huge global ambitions.

"With MY SPORTS we have created a new brand, not available in any other market, designed to satisfy the needs of the sports fans of Myanmar.

"Our long-term partnership with the Myanmar National League will ensure that we help the country develop its football infrastructure over a sustained period, providing local fans with more opportunities to watch and participate in their favourite sport.

"As always, our proposition will be enriched with many more local and international premium sports rights which will be announced in the coming weeks and months.”

Dr Sai Sam Htun, vice-chairman of the Myanmar National League said: "We are delighted with this partnership with MY SPORTS as it will empower us to be able to build the status and quality of the Myanmar National League not just locally, but abroad as well.

"This will give us a platform to grow commercially which will in turn allow more resources to be invested in the quality of football in the country, as we work towards our national vision of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in 2030."
