Leeds United’s Under-23s suffered a narrow defeat at Thorp Arch, as Sheffield United edged a seven goal thriller as Kalvin Phillips saw red.
After an even start, the Whites went in front in the 25th minute, Eoghan Stokes found the top left corner with a super curling strike, finishing off a finely worked team passing move.
Leeds continued to press for a second goal and nearly got one soon after, with a Tom Pearce long range effort forcing a good save from Hugo Warhurst in the Blades goal.
The dominance of the Whites paid off when they doubled their lead through Pearce. After winning possession in the visitors half, Marcus Anttonsson slid the ball to Pearce and his long range effort found the bottom left corner and the back of the net via the post.
The Blades hit back before the break though, when Jake Wright latched onto a neat through ball and dinked the ball over Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the Leeds goal.
Leeds almost restored their two goal advantage by adding a third before the break, countering from a Sheffield corner and beating the offside flag, Stokes put Antonsson in a great position to strike, but the forward could only strike wide with his left foot.
Blunt’s side were reduced to ten-men just before the break, when Phillips was sent off for a second bookable offence, giving the Blades a boost ahead of the interval.
Half Time: Leeds United 2-1 Sheffield United
The visitors took full advantage of the extra man less than three minutes into the second period, when David Brooks broke into the area, before neatly finishing a fine solo goal to level the scores.
Sheffield then went in front for the first time in the 62nd minute, Brooks this time turned from goal-scorer to provider, broke into the Leeds area, before teeing up Tyler Smith who found the back of the net.
The Blades then added a fourth goal from a well worked corner to put daylight between the two sides. Graham Kelly crossed from the edge of the box and captain James Wilson headed home at the back post.
Leeds almost pulled a goal back straight from the re-start, Antonsson was found in a good position and his effort deflected just wide.
Forward Antonsson then latched on to a neat through ball, but he was denied by Warhurst in the Blades goal.
Antonsson would not be denied a goal however in the 75th minute, racing through one-on-one with Warhurst and this time getting the better of the Sheffield stopper.
Leeds continued to press for a leveller, but Sheffield held on for the three points.
