YOUNGSTERS ARE OUR IDENTITY - REDFEARN
Head coach on the four Academy graduates in the first team...

PUBLISHED 19 FEBRUARY 2015 AT 03:00

0 0CHARLIE TAYLOR, LEWIS COOK, NEIL REDFEARN, SAM BYRAM, ALEX MOWATT
Neil Redfearn believes the homegrown players within his squad are the "identity of the club" and says keeping them at Elland Road is part of the long-term plan.

Four Academy graduates started in last Saturday’s 1-0 home win over Millwall, with goalscorer Alex Mowatt lining up alongside Sam Byram, Lewis Cook and Charlie Taylor.

"It’s really important for the club and the identity of the club," said Redfearn.

"It’s something that supporters can relate to - they like to see their own.

"The young players that have come in have been outstanding. It’s a real testament to the Academy."

Having moved to the club’s Academy as Under-18s coach in 2009, Redfearn has played a major role into developing the youngsters into first-team players, and he sees them as key parts of the club’s future.

"Straight from the off, I think the president has expressed his desire to build," said the head coach.

"He wants the club to build for the future and have these young players as the base.

"I think they are wise words and music to the ears of the people at the football club. I’m sure that will be the case.

"They’re young boys and are enjoying playing their football.

"They love playing for Leeds United, you can see that. They’re very together as a group."

Cook, who only celebrated his 18th birthday earlier this month, is the youngest of the four, but Redfearn says he carries himself and plays with the maturity of someone way beyond his years.

"As a person, he is very level-headed. You wouldn’t think he has just turned 18," said Redfearn.

"He’s good a real good outlook on life and how things should be done. His parents have got to take a lot of credit for that.

"He’s a real grounded boy. He’s very driven, he’s never satisfied with what he sees as his best – he always wants to do better."

Våre unggutter og flere juveler?
I scored 24 goals helping my side win promotion back to the Premier League aged just 22. Then in my first season in the top flight I had bagged an impressive 15 goals by the end of January. My form earned me an England call-up. Am I a £35m striker? No. I am Michael Ricketts, February 2002.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT - REDFEARN
Head coach casts an eye over the club's young prospects...

Neil Redfearn says he "wouldn't hesitate" in giving first-team opportunities to any of the club’s youngsters after watching the Under-21s run riot in Monday’s "outstanding" 5-0 thrashing of Huddersfield Town.
The head coach was present in the stands at the John Smith’s Stadium as goals from Dario Del Fabro, Brian Montenegro, Chris Dawson (penalty), Kalvin Phillips and Ross Killock put the 10-man Terriers to the sword in convincing fashion.
Both Phillips and Lewis Walters have been among Redfearn’s substitutes in recent weeks, with the head coach already thinking about adding to the four Academy graduates – Sam Byram, Alex Mowatt, Lewis Cook and Charlie Taylor – who have been regulars in his side this season.
"It’s good to look at everything and, if the opportunity arises, I wouldn’t hesitate to put any of these boys in," said Redfearn.
"They’ve proved that they’re good enough and the lads underneath are pushing them as well.
"It’s a healthy situation to have. It’s always good to have good young players, your future is always your kids and the future looks really bright.
On the Under-21s’ Yorkshire derby victory, Redfearn added: "I thought it was an outstanding performance, there was some great football played.
"They’re usually close games against Huddersfield and keenly contested, but we were by far and away the better side.
"We started off well, got an early goal and the boys played some polished football. The goals were the icing on the cake in a really good performance."
Phillips was handed a place among the substitutes for the second time this season in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Wigan, and although the midfielder was not called upon at the DW Stadium, Redfearn is confident a first-team debut is just a matter of time.
The 19-year-old added the fourth for United’s youngsters at Huddersfield with a stunning strike from range, leaving Joe Murphy helpless as it flew fiercely beyond the Town goalkeeper on 73 minutes.
Redfearn said: "It was an outstanding finish. He’s capable of that sort of thing, he’s a powerful boy.
"He’s got a hammer of a right foot, it dropped for him on the edge of the box and he struck it beautifully. The keeper had no chance. He’s capable of that.
Asked if Phillips is close to a first-team chance, Redfearn replied: "I think so. He was a sub on Saturday and, to be honest, I wouldn’t have hesitated to have thrown him on if I thought we’d have needed him because I think he’s capable.
"He’s more than capable of going in there and holding his own. He’s physically capable with a great technique.
"He’d probably add us a different dimension with his range of passing as well."
The Under-21s’ victory capped a productive couple of days for the youth teams, with United’s Under-18s also enjoying an impressive victory over the Terriers on Saturday – winning 3-0 at Thorp Arch – as confidence runs high throughout the club.
"It always helps if your first team is winning because it makes it a happier club," said the head coach.
"But the young boys have been playing well all season and we’re getting youngsters breaking through - obviously there’s Byram, Cook, Mowatt and Taylor.
"And we’ve got players who played on Monday – Kalvin Phillips was on the bench on Saturday, he played ever so well and scored again.
"Lewis Walters has been on the bench, he looked bright again and young Chris Dawson looked back to his sharp self so it’s a really good plus.
"I thought the two centre-backs, Killock and Del Fabro, looked really assured.
"They defended well, cleared their lines well, organised and got the side up the pitch. They both scored as well which is a real plus."

Loan deadline passes in two weeks time but Redfearn says he won't be sending any of his in-form development side out:

...og ikke alle unggutta med like mye suksess;

Phil Hay @PhilHayYEP
Ross Killock has come back to Leeds from his youth loan at Halifax. Wasn't getting a game at Halifax. "He's better than that," Redfearn said

Six Barber youngsters make United switch

Martin Dowey
martin.dowey@jpress.co.uk
10:51 Thursday 21 January 2016   10:00Friday 22 January 2016

The Mark Barber Elite Football Programme is proving to be a huge success.

The George Pindar College and Hull University-based set-up has already forged great links with Championship side Leeds United.

Mark Barber with the six youngsters who have joined Leeds United

And after just five months of working alongside former Boro men Denny Ingram and Tony Hackworth to improve the progression of the town’s players, six young boys have already gone on to join up with Leeds’ development centre.

Theo Watson, Jacob Hakings and Sutton Greening have all joined the Leeds elite group, while Lewis Shields, Harry Holder and Ralph Stubbings have all signed up for the development shadow squad.

Barber is keen to see more progression from his young players in the final stages of the programme’s first year.

He said: “The development centre is now entering its fifth month, Denny, Tony and myself couldn’t be happier with how it has started.

“We have already had six boys go through to Thorp Arch, three of which have gone into the highest group for their age groups.

“Within our programme the coaching the children get is of a high quality.

“I have worked for three years in an academy with some fantastic players and coaches, Denny is an ex-professional and has been in the game for nearly 20 years, while Tony has played in the Champions League for Leeds.

“The experience and quality of coaching is what you would expect in an academy set-up and is a fantastic opportunity for our players, not just having the opportunity to play through at Leeds, but to develop and improve the standard in this area as well.”

As part of the programme, fixtures have been organised against the I2I Academy, the Ultimate Soccer School and Hessle Sports.

Barber also took a group of players to tackle Leeds United’s elite group.

He added: “This was great for the boys to see that with hard work and concentration at sessions they will get the opportunity at Leeds.

“The set-up and standard proved to everyone that the Academy is up there with the best in the country and the opportunity that we have created is a realistic one for the boys achieve.”
