The Championship outfit have targeted the Italian following Gary Monk's decision to resign.
Monk quit yesterday following a dispute with club bosses over the length of contract he had been offered.
It has left the Yorkshire outfit reeling and fans stunned just weeks after Leeds missed out on the play-offs.
But new owner Andrea Radrizzani could now turn to Ranieri in what would be a huge coup for the fallen giants.

Ranieri has been out of work since being sacked by Leicester in February - just nine months after leading them to the Premier League title.
The decision stunned the world of football, coming so soon after the Italian had masterminded the greatest title triumph of all time.
Ranieri has been in demand ever since, but has turned down several offers, including deals with Inter Milan and Watford.
But Starsport can reveal Radrizzani has approached Ranieri about him taking charge of Leeds and is confident of luring him to Elland Road.
