CLAPHAM LANDS SHRIMPERS TRIAL
Southend have taken Jamie Clapham on trial as they look to bolster their squad further ahead of the new League One season.
Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson admitted after the friendly defeat by Braintree at the weekend that he was looking to recruit at least four more players.
And with Charlie Mulgrew, who spent time on loan at Roots Hall last season, having opted to join Aberdeen, his priority remains a left-back.
To that end, Tilson will run the rule over Clapham, 32, in either Thursday's friendly with Billericay or Monday's clash with Chelmsford.
Tilson told the club's official website: "Jamie has come in for us to have a look at him and he will play in one of the matches we have coming up.
"Signing a left-back remains our main priority and he's someone who has enjoyed a good career so we will see what happens."

HITMAN KING HAS HULL TALKS
Marlon King is set for talks with Hull after the Tigers agreed terms with Wigan for the signing of the striker.
The 28-year-old will hold discussions with the newly-promoted Premier League side after a fee - reportedly for a club-record £3million - was agreed.
And Hull boss Phil Brown, who has already landed six signings this summer, is now hoping to persuade King to move across the Pennines.
"We've agreed terms with Wigan and will be talking with the player over the next 48 hours," he told the Hull Daily Mail.
"It's about getting it right in the transfer market, not doing it quickly."

KING DEAL HITS HITCH
Hull manager Phil Brown says there has been a hitch in his bid to sign Marlon King.
The newly promoted Tigers have agreed terms with Wigan for the Jamaican international striker.
However, Brown has confirmed there is an issue between Wigan and King which means they cannot continue talks at present.
"I spoke with Marlon with Steve Bruce's permission and the two clubs have agreed clubs," he told Sky Sports News.
"But with Marlon there is a problem at the Wigan end so until that is cleared we cannot get the green light to sort out the medical and stuff like that."

Bridges completes Carlisle return

Bridges was tipped for an England call-up earlier in his career

Striker Michael Bridges has re-joined Carlisle United on a season-long loan deal from Premier League side Hull.
The 29-year-old forward scored 15 goals in 30 league appearances with the Cumbrians before joining the Tigers in August 2006 for £350,000.
"I've been speaking to Michael for two or three weeks now," Carlisle manager John Ward told BBC Radio Cumbria.
"We're delighted and I know Michael is delighted to be back in a Carlisle shirt once again."
Bridges began his career as a trainee with Sunderland, scoring 16 goals in 79 appearances for the Black Cats before a £5m move to Leeds United in July 1999.
The North Shields-born forward made an impressive start to his career at Elland Road, scoring a hat-trick at Southampton in only his second appearance.
However, Bridges' career stalled in October 2000 when injury ruled him out for the best part of two years.
The player, capped at England Under-21 level, was loaned to Newcastle United before a move to Bolton Wanderers in June 2004.
Subsequent moves to his former club Sunderland and Bristol City followed before Paul Simpson brought Bridges to Brunton Park on loan in November 2005 - a move which was made permanent three months later.
He formed a successful partnership with Karl Hawley to help fire the Cumbrians to the League Two title in 2006/07 before his move to Humberside the following season.
However, Bridges has found himself out-of-favour at the KC Stadium and was loaned to Australian side Sydney FC last season.
"We've brought him in on a season-long loan initially and then we'll see how it goes after that," Ward said.
"He's perhaps got some catching up to do in terms of first-team football but we have three more games to go before the start of the season and I'm sure Michael will quickly get up to speed by that time."
Bridges' current contract with Hull ends next summer, after which Carlisle have first option on signing the player.

After starting his career with the Saddlers, Ricketts moved to Bolton and then Middlesbrough before spells at Leeds, Southend and Preston, as well as loan moves to Stoke, Cardiff and Burnley.

RIDSDALE MAKES HASSELBAINK CLAIM
Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale claims he came to a verbal agreement with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to waive the contract clause that is currently the subject of a Professional Footballers' Association mediation.
The two parties are engaged in dispute as Hasselbaink wants a new deal at Ninian Park; a request that should have been facilitated by terms in his contract that entitled him to another year if he featured in more than 23 games last season.
Cardiff released the player in the summer, against his wishes, after claiming a verbal agreement had been struck to have the clause removed following talks with both the player and manager Dave Jones.

Hasselbaink saga could face court
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink says his contractual dispute with Cardiff City looks destined to be settled in court.
Hasselbaink, 36, was released at the end of last season despite claims an appearance-based clause in his contract entitled him to a one-year extension.
And after a hearing at the Professional Footballers Association, he said: "We have to wait until we can resolve this. It looks like it will go to court."
Cardiff, who say the clause was waived verbally, were unavailable for comment.
Hasselbaink scored nine goals in 44 games for Cardiff last term and it was claimed he only needed to play 23 times to earn himself a new deal.
The Dutchman called in the PFA after he was turned away from Cardiff's pre-season training earlier this month.
And on Wednesday, he met Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale and PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor at the PFA headquarters in Manchester to try and sort out the dispute.
Taylor aimed to broker a deal to prevent the case ending up in court.
He said: "We would want to get this matter resolved as soon as possible.
"We had eight-and-a-half hours of full and frank discussions, as they say.
"We exhausted all the different parts and want Jimmy to be able to get on with his career and Cardiff can get on with their season."
Hasselbaink added: "I would have loved another season at Cardiff."

Blackie on Spring

Kevin Blackwell gives his thoughts on Matthew Spring who is set to sign from Luton Town...
Spring is to put pen to paper shortly and sign a 1-year loan spell with the Blades. Blackwell has spent plenty of time with Spring in his managerial career. He had him at Leeds United until he departed the Whites and met up at the Hatters.
Blackwell said: "I have spoken to Mick Harford at Luton and it looks as if we will be able to do something on a season long loan basis. Matt is a good midfield player who I know from Leeds and Luton. When I left Kenilworth Road he had scored something like seven goals in about five months and although some of them were penalties, he does score from open play as well.
"Financially, things are very difficult at Luton at the moment which is why we should be able to get him here. He's a terrific athlete, gets up and down the pitch and into the box and, when Luton had a lot of games against Premiership opposition in the Cup, he was outstanding.
"He was Watford's promotion winnings side but the style there didn't really suit him and I tried to sign him towards the end of last season."

Gray signs one-year Wolves deal
Defender Michael Gray has signed a new one-year contract at Wolves.
The 33-year-old, who also played under current boss Mick McCarthy at Sunderland, was a free agent after his deal expired at the end of last season.
"Even though my contract was up, I always felt a part of things since we got back at the beginning of July," Gray told the club website.
"Mick is a man of his word and I always knew I was going to sign. It was making sure things were right for myself."

"It's not happening at the moment, so I'll probably knock the offer on the head," Bruce told the Daily Mail. "It's gone on long enough."

WALTON SET TO SIGN FOR PLYMOUTH
Plymouth are reportedly set to sign QPR midfielder Simon Walton for a club-record fee of £750,000, subject to a medical.
Argyle boss Paul Sturrock has confirmed the club are set to unveil a new player within the next 48 hours.
Boss Sturrock has been so far frustrated in his attempts to bolster his depleted squad in time for the first game of the new Championship season against Wolves on Saturday.
The club have been strongly linked with tough-tackling 20-year-old Walton, but Sturrock refused to clarify the player's identity.
The Plymouth boss said: "We have one player who has put pen-to-paper on the proviso that he passes a medical on Tuesday.

"I would like to think, before the end of the transfer window, we will have several more players coming to the football club."

Manager Keith Downing said: "Geoff is just training with us at the moment.
"He has not done a lot in pre-season but we're having a look at him and he is having a look at us.
"When fully fit he is a very good player so we're going to see how we get on with it."

BRUCE WARNS TIGERS OVER KING DEAL
Wigan boss Steve Bruce has warned Hull counterpart Phil Brown that he is ready to pull the plug on their £2million bid to sign Marlon King.
Hull agreed a fee with Wigan for King last month, but the deal has dragged on without any successful conclusion.

TIGERS WAIT ON KING DEAL
Hull chairman Paul Duffen has suggested money is holding up Marlon King's move to the KC Stadium.
The Premier League new boys agreed a fee with Wigan Athletic for King last month, but have yet to finalise the deal.
Wigan boss Steve Bruce has threatened to cancel the transfer due to the delay in the striker leaving the JJB Stadium.
However, Duffen insists the issue is between King and his current club, and is hoping money is not creating the problem.
"As far as we're concerned, we've agreed everything that we can over Marlon King," Duffen told the Hull Daily Mail.
"It's a three-way situation in the transfer - one between us and Wigan, two between us and the player and, finally, between the player and Wigan.
"Two of those aspects have been agreed, but it's down to what happens between the player and Wigan now. The agent has put Wigan in a very difficult position.
"I am beginning to get the impression that the move might be driven by money more than ambition.
"At this stage, it's not clear if that's down to the agent or the player."

DERRY NAMED PALACE CAPTAIN
Shaun Derry has been confirmed as Crystal Palace's new club captain for the forthcoming season.
The former Leeds midfielder, who rejoined Palace in November last term and played a major role in helping them to the play-offs, beat off competition from the likes of Clint Hill, Matt Lawrence and Paddy McCarthy to claim the armband.
Boss Neil Warnock told the Croydon Advertiser: "Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on which way you look at it, I think we've got three or four great captains at the club.
"But I just think Shaun has been more involved off the field, I've spoken to him a few times about things and I think he is just the type that we need, particularly with the youngsters."

PLYMOUTH SWOOP FOR WALTON
Plymouth have completed the signing of midfielder Simon Walton from Championship rivals QPR.
The 20-year-old has agreed a four-year deal at Home Park after arriving for an undisclosed club-record fee - more than the £500,000 forked out for Steve McLean in January.
Walton arrived at Loftus Road from Charlton last summer but suffered a broken leg in pre-season which limited him to just five appearances for the Hoops.
He joined Hull on loan in January and made 10 appearances as the Tigers won promotion to the Premier League.
"Simon is a player who I have monitored for years and I feel he is the perfect person for us," Argyle boss Paul Sturrock told the club's official website.

Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan insists he's not seeking to sell striker Alan Smith.
Keegan left the combative striker out of his squad for the friendly against Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday night.
That sparked speculation the England international would soon be heading for the St James' Park exit door.
However, Keegan insists that he was merely resting Smith and has no plans to sell the former Manchester United forward.
"With Alan - he's got a sore ankle," he said.
"I haven't risked anyone in this game and I knew when I left him out it would cause questions, but he's got a sore ankle and I can't treat him any different to anybody else.
"You saw me bringing players off every time they get a knock.
"Every time the doctors or the physios come to me and say, 'Habib Beye - 50 minutes is enough', I've stuck with that.
"I haven't risked anybody, which I think is right and it's given me a chance to give some other people a bit of time."

The two clubs had agreed an undisclosed fee for the 28-year-old but the deal could not be completed.

"He has worked hard in pre-season and has made an impact but he has chosen to move on for the time being."
Brown has had a busy summer in the transfer market at they prepare for their first season in the top flight.
Peter Halmosi, George Boateng, Tony Warner, Bernard Mendy, Geovanni and Craig Fagan have already arrived at the club.

Kenton trains with Robins: Defender looking for new club after leaving Leeds

Bristol City have handed a trial to former Leeds United defender Darren Kenton.
The 29-year-old was released by Leeds at the end of last season after only moving to Elland Road from Leicester City in January.
He has now pitched up at Ashton Gate as Robins manager Gary Johnson looks for extra defensive cover following an injury to Jamie McCombe.
Johnson has already brought in Andy Webster on loan from Rangers and gave Kenton a chance to impress in Monday's reserve game with Forest Green Rovers.
"It came to our attention that Darren was unattached and we'll have a look at him at Forest Green," Johnson told the club's official website.

Former Leeds United pair favourites for Newcastle United

Gus Poyet and Dennis Wise

Bookies have installed former Leeds United pair Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet favourites to take over at Newcastle following Kevin Keegan's suprise departure.
Sky Bet made Wise 5-2 favourite for the hotseat.
Wise's 15-month reign as Elland Road manager officially ended in January after he accepted the chance to join Keegan's management team at St James' Park.
Wise was named by United chairman Ken Bates as the permanent replacement for Kevin Blackwell following the unsuccessful reign of John Carver as caretaker manager.
Leeds were relegated from the Championship last summer at the end of Wis and Poyet's first season with the duo initially unpopular with Elland Road fans.
But an impressive series of results at the start of last season which saw United overcome a fifteen point deficit saw opinions change.
It is not yet clear whether Keegan was sacked or resigned.
Keegan and Newcastle owner Mike Ashley are understood to have clashed over the club's transfer policy and the decision to try and sell controversial midfielder Joey Barton.
After announcing the sale of England Under 21 captain James Milner last week, Keegan called on Newcastle supporters to judge him and the club after the closure of the transfer window.
Keegan was appointed Newcastle manager for a second time on January 16 after the sacking of Sam Allardyce.
Following a glittering playing career with Liverpool, Newcastle and England he retired from playing in 1984.
Keegan returned to the game as Newcastle boss in 1992 before also going on to manage Fulham, England and Manchester City.
He went back to St James' Park earlier this year but was thought to be unhappy with restructuring at the club which saw Dennis Wise appointed as executive director (football).
Keegan recently claimed Milner would not be sold - only for the midfielder to join Aston Villa in a £12million deal.
But having been unable to add to the signings of Argentinian pair Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez with several big-name stars Keegan is believed to have become disillusioned with his lot at Newcastle.

SPRING WANTS BLADES STAY
Sheffield United's on-loan midfielder Matthew Spring is keen to land a permanent deal at Bramall Lane, with his future at Luton looking bleak.
The 28-year-old moved to the Blades on loan in the summer, with the offer of a step up to the Championship too good to turn down.
He told skysports.com: "I got the opportunity to come to Sheffield from Luton and I couldn't turn the chance down.

Free agent star set to sign pay-as-you-play deal
Former Liverpool, Manchester City, Leeds United and Cardiff City striker Robbie Fowler is set to agree a pay-as-you-play deal with Blackburn Rovers and could be in the squad to face Arsenal at Ewood Park this weekend.
The 33-year-old has been training with Rovers ever since his former Liverpool team-mate Paul Ince took over as manager.
Blackburn chairman John Williams said they hoped to agree a three-month deal by the end of the week.
Williams told PA Sport: "We have agreed in principle a three-month pay-as-you-play deal and we hope to have it tied up by the end of the week.
"If we go ahead on that basis and get it registered, then if the manager wants him he would be able to be in the squad against Arsenal on Saturday."
Fowler is currently a free agent after leaving Cardiff during the summer.

Huckerby thrilling San Jose - and MLS - fans

Don't tell Glenn Roeder this, but Darren Huckerby has arguably made the biggest impact of any summer transfer window signing in MLS.
Unlike many English players before him, including Steve Guppy, Ian Woan, Chris Woods and Steve Howey, Huckerby seems right at home in MLS. The style of play and tactical acumen of MLS is completely different than the English Championship or Premier League.
Despite this, Huckerby has fit in wide on the left side for San Jose comfortably. Not only has he fit right in but his enthusiasm for football has been contagious. San Jose now looks like a spirited team, not the bunch that was playing for consistent nil-all scorelines earlier in the season.
The injury to American midfielder Ramiro Corrales, whose experience and leadership helped keep San Jose afloat earlier in the season, could have ended the Earthquakes season. But Saturday night’s superb match-winner from Huckerby against Kansas City and the fiery leadership he has shown especially since Corrales' injury means that the Quakes have perhaps the greatest X-factor MLS has to offer.

Heilt einig!

RITCHIE INTERESTED IN MARINERS POST
Andy Ritchie has confirmed he would be interested in succeeding Alan Buckley as Grimsby boss and is keen on a return to football management.
Ritchie, however, has played down national media reports linking him with the vacant post at Blundell Park following Buckley's departure on Monday, but admits he would seriously consider an approach from the Mariners.
The former Oldham, Barnsley and Huddersfield manager is currently forging a media career and is one of several candidates - along with the likes of Richard O'Kelly and Stuart Watkiss - tipped to take charge at Grimsby.
"I'm obviously pleased to be linked with the job but I haven't heard anything, whether I will do in the next few days I don't know," said Ritchie. "I certainly haven't applied for the job.
"I haven't had any contact with them so I don't know where the story has come from to be fair.
"At the minute I'm doing a lot of media stuff, but I'd certainly consider it. At some stage I would definitely be keen on a return to management."

CRAINEY ON ROAD TO RECOVERY
Blackpool's Stephen Crainey is hoping to be back in action in less than the estimated six weeks after making good progress from groin surgery.
The 27-year-old left-back has been unable to play any part in the Tangerines' campaign so far, and having also missed the back end of last season with a knee injury, the Scotsman is hoping that his latest operation will finally see and end to his injury woes.
Crainey told the club's official website: "Hopefully it went well. I've been able to go straight onto the bike and doing some really light stuff so I'm delighted with that because I thought I would have been struggling for a week or two.
"They said six to eight weeks but different people react differently and I'm hoping the lower end of that scale to be honest.
"I just need to take it day-by-day and hopefully keep progressing as well as I am now."

NEWCASTLE IN A BIT OF A MESS - POYET
Gus Poyet insists Newcastle United is 'not the right place' to take his first steps into management in his own right.
The former Chelsea midfielder has previously been the assistant to Newcastle's executive director (football) Dennis Wise at Swindon Town and Leeds United.
Poyet is currently Juande Ramos' No.2 at Tottenham Hotspur, but had been the favourite to succeed Kevin Keegan at St James' Park.
He admitted last week that he is happy at Spurs and was not worrying about the speculation surrounding his future.
The Uruguayan is good friends with Wise and Newcastle vice-president Tony Jimenez, but believes the Magpies are in a 'mess'.
"It's easy (to speculate) as Dennis is there and Tony Jimenez, who is my best friend in England, it's too easy," Poyet told Sky Sports.
"I think it's a little bit of a mess there at the moment, so it's not the right place for me.
"It's a great job and I would like to manage one day, but it's not the right time now."

Zola: I was surprised Wise quit Leeds

Gianfranco Zola takes charge of West Ham tomorrow admitting he is surprised that former Chelsea team-mate Dennis Wise left his job at Leeds United for Newcastle.
Wise quit as manager of League One Leeds in January to become director of football for the Magpies, now a club in crisis.
Zola expects his former Stamford Bridge skipper to attend the game, and he admitted: "I'm looking forward to seeing him.
"He was my skipper for many years and I always respected him.
"He is a good man, although some people don't like him. But when he was with us he was always positive.
Zola did admit he was surprised Wise gave up a managerial job at Leeds for a behind-the-scenes role at Newcastle.
He said: "I don't know what he is doing there. He is probably tackling someone on the board.
"I was quite surprised because I know he was enjoying management."

United take look at former Leeds duo

Sheffield United will hand Ian Harte and Seb Carole a run-out for their reserves this week after taking the former Leeds pair on trial
Defender Harte and winger Carole are both training with Kevin Blackwell's squad, and will appear for the Blades' second string against Newcastle.
Harte, who left Leeds to join Spanish side Levante in July 2004, was released from Sunderland in the summer.
Frenchman Carole appeared in Leeds' first-leg play-off semi-final defeat to Carlisle back in May, but fell out of favour with Gary McAllister and has since been released from Elland Road.
