Title: EX-SPILLER - Mike Grella
Post by: Promotion 2010 on January 31, 2009, 18:24:07

Lorimer: "He's got a contract and has taken it on until the end of the season!"

Han fortsatte: "They have been impressed with him."

Grella did travel with the squad today.
I spoke to him and Ben Parker in the dugout during the warm up.
Grella said he had been offered a deal and was looking into it didnt give any other details.
He has not signed anything as yet.
Seems a good un - not an arrogant git with a chip on his shoulder as has been reported

Grella looks at home in Leeds

Leeds United are confident that the chance they have taken on American striker Mike Grella â€" hitherto unknown in Yorkshire and England â€" will be a calculated gamble which pays off handsomely.
Grella's recent trial with Leeds led to the offer for an 18-month contract at Elland Road on the last day of the January transfer window, and the 22-year-old is beginning a transition of cultures after leaving the American college system to join England's Football League.
United took little more than fortnight and a handful of reserve-team games to positively assess Grella, and he is the latest of several signings that Leeds have produced from relative obscurity in the past two years.
Filipe Da Costa and Sebastian Sorsa were opportunistic transfers that United ultimately failed to benefit from â€" Di Costa played seven times for the first team and Sorsa not at all â€" but far more success has come from their discovery of Argentinian forward Luciano Becchio in the Spanish second division last summer.
Grella lacks the strength of CV that Becchio possessed, but he did his cause no harm by scoring a hat-trick and outperforming the vastly experienced Malcolm Christie in a reserve game between Leeds and Barnsley at Elland Road last month.
Simon Grayson, United's manager, saw in Grella a natural striker and he was significantly impressed by the ease with which the American settled into training and mingled with his senior squad at Thorp Arch.
Grayson said: "We've seen enough in him to know that he's a natural goalscorer and also to feel confident that he's got the attitude and temperament for a career in this country and at this club.
"A major thing for me was that he didn't look at all out of place among my other players, either in the way he trained or the way he acted.
"It's gamble in as much as he's a bit of an unknown quantity but if we didn't see great potential in him then we wouldn't have signed him."
Grella's suitability for a professional contract was demonstrated by the attempt made by Toronto FC to sign the forward after he left Atlantic Coast Conference club Duke University last year.
His list of achievements while part of Duke's roster is a catalogue of regional and national awards and his former coach John Kerr described Grella as "arguably the best collegiate player in the country", high praise when the vast number of teams involved in the popular college system is taken into consideration.
Major League Soccer club Toronto recently selected Grella from the 2009 draft but the offer of a contract from their head coach John Carver, a man well known in West Yorkshire, did not dissuade Grella from pursuing employment with a European club.
Kerr was thrilled by the news on Monday that one of Duke's former players had agreed a free transfer to England, a stage where several Americans have thrived professionally, and it was no surprise to him that Grella rejected the chance to relocate to Canada while the possibility of beginning his career in Europe remained.
"Mike has always known that he wanted to go to Europe to try his luck professionally," Kerr told the YEP.
"It wasn't a big surprise that he chose to go to Europe.
"He had a great offer from Major League Soccer and we had a discussion right before he had to decide, but Mike has had this dream of playing in Europe since he was a young boy.
"There was no way anyone was going to stop him from having a go.
"The only question was whether it was going to be England or Italy, where his father is from. I think the excitement of English football led him to think that England was the place for him."
Grella's Italian heritage was crucial to United's interest in so far as the EU passport he holds spared the club from the unpredictable process of applying for a work permit.
The 22-year-old has represented the USA at Under-18 and Under-20 level but has not laid claim to a full cap and, like Becchio before him, an Italian passport made a potentially complicated transfer to Elland Road straightforward.
In different circumstances, his international record would have stood against him in any application for a work permit.
United's offer of an 18-month contract was made after a behind-closed-doors game against Hull City last week, but it seemed likely that Leeds would bring him on board as soon as his first public outing for the reserves on January 20 saw him score a hat-trick.
Barnsley fielded a young team at Elland Road but Grella's finishing was clinical, and the unfortunate Christie was made to look pedestrian alongside the American.
Manchester United and Arsenal sent scouts to watch his performance, though neither club are thought to have obstructed United's move to sign Grella permanently.
How quickly he is now exposed to the rigours of the Football League will depend on various factors, not least the potential loss of Lee Trundle next week and the failed attempt by United to sign Liam Dickinson from Derby County before Monday's transfer deadline. Both developments could leave Grayson short of attacking players at a delicate stage of the League One season.
Grayson said: "He's here to play and if I feel he's ready then I'll certainly involve him.
"But it might be that it takes him a little while to get used to the English game and we'll give him the time he needs to settle in properly.
"There's always the option of sending him out on loan as well if we feel he needs to get a bit more experience but he's a real talent and we've got high hopes for him."
The mood is similar at Duke University, an institution based in North Carolina where Grella's progress will be monitored with interest.
United chairman Ken Bates revealed on Monday that the tip-off about Grella had come from the agent responsible for representing Trundle, and Leeds did not delay long before finalising a deal once his trial was agreed.
Kerr, who played for Duke University in the 1980s and became their coach in 2007, two decades after his graduation, believed that Grella's foray in Europe would prove worthwhile, and he does not expect the step from college soccer in America to professional English football will find his former striker wanting.
"We're extremely excited for Mike," said Kerr. "There wasn't a day in training where my assistant and I weren't amazed by some of the subtle moves Mike made.
"It's obvious he's a special player."

More about Mike!

I've done a bit of digging around on the net to find out a bit more about our new striker Mike Grella, who joined Leeds on an 18month deal last Monday following a successful trial spell.
According to his profile at Duke Sports https://admin.xosn.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=4200&ATCLID=158592 Mike was born in Glen Cove, NY on 23rd January 1987 making him 22. He is the son of Mike and Grace Grella and he has a brother called Frank.
Maybe his Mum and Dad were closet Leeds fans in the 1970's? eg Mike (O'Grady or even Mick Bates/Jones) and Frank Gray! As their fellow countrymen were glued to thsat three-hour padded forward-pass Rugby nonsense and "Silly Boys Rounders" (Del Trotter circa 1989) maybe mom and Pops followed the whites?
He emerged as a promising youth-talent and in 2003 and 2004 was named something called Parade Magazine's High School all American Player of the Year (Parade Magazine incidentally has a circulation of 33 million, I believe it is a Sunday supplement type of magazine read by an estimated 76 million Yanks and you can visit their website if you must at http://www.parade.com/
Unfortunately Mike's first clubs were associated with the word Red or Reds (so maybe Gary Edwards can do a few painting jobs for him when he settles in a player in West Yorkshire!). In 2004, he was playing for the Glen Cove Big Red and was named NSCAA player of the year for that season. He also turned out for a mob called Albertson RED storm, leading their academy to the 2004 USYSA title.
He then played "soccer" for Duke University and in 2008 won the coveted status of being named in something called the first team all American.
During collegiate off-season (whatever that is!), he played for the Long Island Rough Raiders in Division Four of the USL Premier Development League, scoring 10 goals in 17 games. His next stop in 2008 was Cary Railhawks, scoring twice in 3 games.
The Major League Soccer Superdraft is where professional MLS teams "pick" promising players from college soccer, Grella appeared in the 3rd draft, 34th pick overall and was selected by Toronto FC (who also play in red). But he snubbed Canada and headed over to England, which is probably colder and more snowier at this moment in time.
Or maybe he did not fancy life under Toronto FC's coach, who is a certain John "Concrete" Carver, the hapless, one-time caretaker manager of Leeds United!
Mike holds both American and Italian passports. He has played for the USA at U18 and U20 levels.

New York-laget vant 4-1.
