Leeds United will begin their pre-season schedule against amateur Italian side Gherdeina tonight with three new players likely to make their first appearances for the club.
Goalkeeper Marco Silvestri is set to feature in this evening’s friendly after Leeds confirmed his signing for an undisclosed fee from Serie A club Chievo yesterday.
The 23-year-old, who finished last season on loan at Cagliari, agreed a four-year deal with United and has been training with David Hockaday’s squad in preparation for tonight’s match.
Fellow keeper Stuart Taylor â€" recruited on a free transfer from Reading last week â€" is expected to play for 45 minutes while third new signing Tomasso Bianchi, the midfielder signed on a three-year deal from Sassuolo, is likely to figure too.
Hockaday spoke highly of Silvestri, saying: “Everybody in Italy believes Marco is destined for very big things. We’re delighted to welcome him to Leeds.
“He has been training with us for a week now and he has impressed everybody.â€
United’s summer signings could increase to four in the days ahead with Catania striker Souleymane Doukara close to a deal with the Elland Road club.
Former Arsenal and Celtic left-back Andre Blackman is also in line to formally join Leeds having trained with the squad in Italy during the past week.
The 23-year-old is available on a free transfer having finished last season at non-league Maidenhead and he has been a target of United owner Massimo Cellino since the early stages of the summer.
Tonight’s fixture in Val Gardena (kick-off 5.30pm) is the first of two arranged for Leeds’ Italian tour.
Hockaday’s squad will meet Romanian top-flight team Viitorul Constanta â€" a club owned by the legendary Gheorghe Hagi â€" on Sunday, prior to their return to England next week.

Med andre ord ser det ut som at Silvestri kommer til å være vår 1. Keeper. Er Hockaday smart bruker han Taylor i FA-cupen hvor han har erfaring. Da minsker faren for skade og tretthet for Silvestri også. Nok av kamper som skal spilles for CH-lag.

Pssss Første kamp kan alltid taes med en klype salt. Det er vel dessuten relativt vanlig på CCC nivå, å spille mot dårligere motstand. Vi skal vel spille mot Dundee. Det er da noe

United got their pre-season schedule underway on Thursday evening with a 16 goal victory against FC Gherdiena.
United’s head coach David Hockaday, who was in charge of the team for the first time, says the attitude shown by the players was the thing that impressed him the most.
United were ruthless from start to finish against the local side and the head coach was pleased with what he saw from his side.
“The game was part of our pre-season training programme and now we have added match fitness to it,†said United’s head coach. “Most of the players had 45 minutes and we haven’t got any injuries from the game that I know of.
“There were one or two little niggles but nothing that will stop them training. The thing that I was really impressed with was the attitude of the players.
“It can sometimes be difficult playing against a team that we dominated like we did but the players kept on going and going.
“They all did some running afterwards as well because we need to be the F***est team in the league, that is the aim.
“They tried to put into practise all the things that we have been working on recently. There is still lots to work on but overall the attitude was spot on.â€
United may have won the game with 16 unanswered goals but David insists that there was a number of positives to take from the game.
“It was the first game, the scoreline doesn’t really mean anything,†said Hockaday. “We kept a cleansheet and we kept the ball well.
“There was a good intensity to our passing at times and we got lots of balls in the box. There were some great finishes.
“I just think that the general attitude of the team was great, and I will keep on stressing that, we looked like a team. There was a camaraderie there.
“The result was nice for the confidence but it is early days. All the lads got 45 minutes and they will be back in training on Friday.â€
United’s next pre-season game is on Sunday evening against Romanian side Viitorul Constanta, 5.30pm local time, 4.30pm UK time.
