Lenny Bruce...
But he sure was great once...

http://ninebullets.net/archives/to-is-a-preposition-come-is-a-verb
To†is a preposition; “Come†is a verb
Allow me a break from the normal music discussions to recognize this day. On this day 41 years ago, Lenny Bruce took one trip too many. Morphine overdose. Broke and in debt, paranoid and overweight. 40 years old.
I am not gonna go into a big drawn out synopsis of his life here. Anyone on this site also has access to Wikipedia, and those folks have already gone through all of the effort for me. If you are not familiar with Lenny or his material, you should go read it.
In 2004, Bruce was voted No. 3 of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time by Comedy Central, behind Richard Pryor and George Carlin, both of whom cite Bruce as an influence.
In fact, Carlin was arrested for refusing to show identification while attending Bruce’s 1964 show at the Gate of Horn in Chicago, and after the police ended the show and arrested Bruce for obscenity, they were both placed into the back of the same paddywagon together.
My first exposure to Lenny’s material was when I was a pizza delivery person. One of my coworkers handed me a cassette tape one night and said “Check this out. You’re the kind of person that would probably get into that kind of stuff.†They were right. I did not know it at the time, but that was one of those life changing moments. Personally, Lenny Bruce ranks right up there with Hunter S. Thompson and Leonard Cohen as a person I would most like to spend a night over dinner with, and if I could get a night out on the town boozing, drugging and whoring with those three….well, just kill me the next morning, because the rest of my life would just be a big f**king let-down. I just wanted to acknowledge Lenny today and post some of my favorite bits of his.
Before we got to the bits though. I wanna post this description of one of Lenny’s more famous shows at Carnegie Hall. It was written by a Mr. Albert Goldman and is included in the liner notes of the show’s 3-album release:
This was the moment that an obscure yet rapidly rising young comedian named Lenny Bruce chose to give one of the greatest performances of his career. … The performance contained in this album is that of a child of the jazz age. Lenny worshipped the gods of Spontaneity, Candor and Free Association. He fancied himself an oral jazzman. His ideal was to walk out there like Charlie Parker, take that mike in his hand like a horn and blow, blow, blow everything that came into his head just as it came into his head with nothing censored, nothing translated, nothing mediated, until he was pure mind, pure head sending out brainwaves like radio waves into the heads of every man and woman seated in that vast hall. Sending, sending, sending, he would finally reach a point of clairvoyance where he was no longer a performer but rather a medium transmitting messages that just came to him from out there â€" from recall, fantasy, prophecy. A point at which, like the practitioners of automatic writing, his tongue would outrun his mind and he would be saying things he didn’t plan to say, things that surprised, delighted him, cracked him up â€" as if he were a spectator at his own performance!
I’ll drink a few and say f**k the Goverment for you tonight Mr. Bruce.
I hear the ancient footsteps like the motion of the sea
Sometimes I turn, there's someone there, other times it's only me
I am hanging in the balance of the reality of man
Like every sparrow falling, like every grain of sand

LENNY BRUCE
Lenny Bruce is dead but his ghost lives on and on
Never did get any Golden Globe award, never made it to Synanon.
He was an outlaw, that's for sure,
More of an outlaw than you ever were.
Lenny Bruce is gone but his spirit's livin' on and on.
Maybe he had some problems, maybe some things that he couldn't work out
But he sure was funny and he sure told the truth and he knew what he was talkin'
about. Never robbed any churches nor cut off any babies' heads,
He just took the folks in high places and he shined a light in their beds.
He's on some other shore, he didn't wanna live anymore.
Lenny Bruce is dead but he didn't commit any crime
He just had the insight to rip off the lid before its time.
I rode with him in a taxi once, only for a mile and a half,
Seemed like it took a couple of months.
Lenny Bruce moved on and like the ones that killed him, gone.
They said that he was sick 'cause he didn't play by the rules
He just showed the wise men of his day to be nothing more than fools.
They stamped him and they labeled him like they do with pants and shirts,
He fought a war on a battlefield where every victory hurts.
Lenny Bruce was bad, he was the brother that you never had.
....

Virkelig "trøkk" i syngingen hans. Men man må "takle" kordamene da [:)]

The powerful Warfield concert begins on this disc and is concluded on the companion disc "Part 2". This near flawless audience recording preserves it in all it's glory. Personally, one of my favorite venues, this gospel show explodes with vocal passion to be found in few other Dylan periods. If you're a fan of Dylan's gospel period, this set is a 'Must-have'.

The Warfield is an incredible concert. This is the conclusion of the show that began on the companion disc "Part 1". This near flawless audience recording preserves it in all it's glory. Personally, one of my favorite venues, this gospel show explodes with vocal passion to be found in few other Dylan periods. The Slow Train LP comes alive with as much or more fire than on the studio version. The SavedLP had not yet been released, and the new material is even more fresh and powerful than the studio release. Finally, a perfect studio quality six verse version of Trouble In Mind rounds out this wonderful package. If you're a fan of the gospel period, this set is a 'Must-have'.

Review:
Fantastic quality recording straight from the soundboard. Some of the pure hell-fire and brimstone inspiration of the previous fall tour has drained off a little, but there is still a spark. Perhaps Dylan was fighting with his twin (That enemy within) as never before. The sound quality, however, is far superior to most of those earlier shows. As is the case with most Flashback titles, package is nice, but minimal. Great cover period photo and track & venue listed on back. It is rumored that this venue was intended to produce a live CBS album. Indeed, there is a professionally shot mult-camera video that exists of this night, and a better quality recording of half of the Dylan portion of the previous night's show entitled 'Rock Solid
