Title: Ollie Hotchkiss - Brazilian Soccer Schools
Post by: McMidjo on January 14, 2008, 09:45:33

Oliver Hotchkiss, 18, currently plays for Leeds United at youth and reserve team level. He spoke to the Leeds Guide about the role that the Brazilian Soccer Schools (BSS), which started in Leeds and now has around one-million children training at their centres each week, played in his development. Oliver graduated from the BSS in his hometown of Sunderland.

- How are you finding things at Leeds United?

- It’s fantastic. It’s a great club to be part of and I am privileged to play for a club with such wonderful supporters. It has been dark times for the club recently but their support and loyalty this season has been immense. I would love play a part in helping the club achieve Premiership status again and impress Dennis Wise enough to break into the first team along with continuing my progress at International level.

- I have played for the reserves a number of times and feel I have done well. I scored my first goal for them on Tuesday against Grimsby Town and we’re playing them again on Wednesday so hopefully if I’m involved I can make it two goals in two games!

- What role did Brazilian Soccer Schools (BSS) play in your development?

- BSS was crucial to my development and I enjoyed every session because I’m not a ‘hit and hope’ type of player. Like most players I enjoy having the ball at my feet and feel that I am able to play quick and fast passing football but also dribble and beat players and the emphasis of the BSS sessions centred on this.

- Thankfully at Leeds we are encouraged to play football, rather than playing the conventional English type of football, with long balls aimed at the strikers, and so BSS was ideal for me because it gave me the opportunity to develop my technical skills, but also to use them in the physical environment of men’s football at Leeds. During breaks in the season I train with Steve Nichol, the Head of Coach development for BSS, which helps me when I return to Leeds.

-How did involvement with the BSS National Squads help your development?

- Micah Richards, who graduated from the BSS in Leeds, along with others such as John Bostock who plays for Crystal Palace after graduating from BSS Lewisham and is still only fifteen, were all involved in the Squads which work individually with the players on ball technique and manipulation as well as the fitness levels of each player. They’re a great opportunity to work with Simon Clifford, who founded the Brazilian Soccer Schools, and others such as Steve Nichol who are some of the best coaches in the world, along with playing with the best players from BSS centres around the world.

- As you mention, there’s other BSS players making the breakthrough, such as Micah Richards and John Bostock â€" can you notice the difference between players that trained at the Brazilian Soccer Schools using Futebol de Salão and those that didn’t?

- Definitely. Personally, I am comfortable with the ball at my feet and I think this is one of the main differences because when I watch John (Bostock) and Micah (Richards) play, I can see how comfortable they are with the ball at their feet. Even though Micah has been playing in defence, he still gets forward and can beat a man in defence.
