"I asked for a freshness in training and I got a wonderful response. Training was nice and bright and sharp. We put a lot of emphasis on football, it wasn't very tactical, it wasn't too taxing on their brains. It was about having fun and passing the ball and I think the players enjoyed it." (McAllister)
Hallelujah!
Now, it remains to be seen if this approach will work. Are the players we have good enough to pass and move? I think they are (in this league) but only time will tell.
But imo, the team are now looking so poor because of the Wise's style of coaching. He smacked of insecurity to me. He was overly analytical, overly picky with things like the ball boy throwing the ball back too quickly, how long Casper took to pick up a ball that was out of play, how quickly Parker took a throwin etc etc. All that gamesmanship bollocks that he believed gave us the edge. Then there was the way he slated players after games because they made mistakes in his over complicated zonal defending (remember how much Hyppia and Henchoz hated that when Benitez first introduced it?) and how he revelled in revealing he would "flog 'em again tomorrow and we'll repeat it over and over until they get it". Then there was the "I can only show you how to do it, chaps, I can't do it for you" stuff that he was coming out with towards the end almost seperating himself from what the players do. Team, anyone? Add to that his constant insecure scribbling on his note pad throughout games and the whinging in linesman's ears and fourth officials and, for me, you've got an individual who feels management is about everything except actually playing football!
For me, the players look mentally drained right now. Wise actually said a few months back that "maybe we're giving them too much to think about". The best and most successful football is played when the shackles are removed. When confidence is high. When players feel like they can express themselves. Although I am sceptical about Bates' intentions for McAllister I believe he will bring confidence to players who have had it flogged out of them. Players who are showing themselves up as being far worse than they are because their former manager believed discipline meant dropping a player if he made a couple of mistakes in a game (see Howson) or extra training for one missed header? How can you play football in those conditions?
One comment from Wise said it all for me. In Rui's last game before he left for Ghana he gave a majestic MOM performance and was obviously revelling in knowing he was better than anyone else on the pitch. Following the game Wise was asked how good a performance it was and how much will he be missed. He replied with "Yeah he was good, but I wasn't happy with all the fancy stuff he was doing. There was a moment when he flicked the ball over a players head and passed it, he nearly give me a heart attack. Trust me, he won't be trying any of that again!".
Good riddance Dennis Wise.
Managerbytte kom i grevens tid, utvilsomt :P
What a relief at han dro !!

Nei, forget about him, he's gone.
