Leeds United youngster Jamie Shackleton has revealed he is embracing life and his new position under Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road.

The 18-year-old has featured heavily throughout pre-season for United and was called upon once more during Thursday's 4-3 win over National League North side Guiseley at Nethermoor Park.

Shackleton, who is a product of the Leeds academy and is yet to make a senior appearance for the club, has revealed he is loving life at Thorp Arch in the first-team ranks and is embracing his new position as a wing-back away from his preferred role in midfield.

"I've played on the wing before when I was younger but never wing-back," Shackleton told LUTV.

"I don't mind it to be fair it suits my game and I am enjoying it. I've enjoyed pre-season. Working on the shape work, it's a new position for me, I've enjoyed it and the games as well."

Asked whether he had taken much from new boss Bielsa during the course of pre-season, Shackleton replied: "A lot. The tactics that we have worked on and the movements and this new position, I've learnt a lot in a short space of time and hopefully I can take that forward into this season.

"I've obviously played with Pearcey, Ronny and Paudie and to see them go on and play in the first-team, it shows that it's not too far away - seeing lads that I have played with go and do it. It's good to see. Hopefully I can make that next step.

"It gives you something to strive for to come out every game and do your best."

Kippax teenager Shackleton living the dream with Leeds United

Published: 10:30 Thursday 30 August 2018

Jamie Shackleton on his Leeds United debut at Derby.
Latest off the Leeds United Academy production line to make an impression in the first team, Jamie Shackleton has come a long way in a short space of time.

The 18-year-old midfielder, now turned attacking full-back, has been given his chance in the first team at Elland Road after impressing new head coach Marcelo Bielsa in training and in the pre-season warm-up games.

And the Kippax youngster is fast becoming a first team regular with his senior debut, home debut and first starts in both the Carabao Cup and Sky Bet Championship ticked off.

The rise has been fast for a lad who first kicked a ball for the Kippax Athletic junior team with his appearances in the senior side earning him a new contract – a three-year deal to stay at Elland Road and develop his career further.

As a boyhood Leeds United fan it is a dream come true for Jamie and he is still pinching himself.

He said: “I’ve always been a Leeds fan, so to put on a Leeds shirt was one of the best feelings of my life.

“It’s a great feeling having signed another three years here. Obviously since I’ve been young that was the aim, a professional contract so to get another three years as a pro here, I’m really pleased with that.

“I wasn’t expecting it, not at all. I just kept my head down, kept working. If you do that, hopefully it’s going to come. That’s all you can do.

“Like I said this is the club I love so do that, get on the pitch for the first team and sign a new contract here, it means an awful lot to me, but really now it’s about the next one and the next game.

“That’s what you want really, more game time. Now I’ve had a sniff of it, I want more. So that’s the aim now.”

On his own background Shackleton explained: “I started off playing for Kippax Athletic, my local team.

“I got scouted by Leeds at six or seven, but carried on playing for Kippax up until nine and then I signed for the academy, under-nines.

“And from then on I played for all the academy teams up until the 23s.

“I’ve worked with a lot of different coaches that have all helped me along the way. Some really good coaches and a few setbacks at times.

“I’ve played an age group down before due to my size, but ultimately it’s all helped me and, yeah, the hard work has gone into getting where I am at the moment.

Shackleton was earmarked for potential greatness when aged just 16 by former Leeds first team and academy boss Neil Redfearn, but he played down the favourable comment:

“Well I was still playing 18s football, bit of 23s football at that time so it was still a way to go to playing first-team football I thought.

“It’s a good thing to hear from a first team coach and for him to have that belief in me and it’s good that he’s been right about it.”

On making his senior debut as a substitute at Derby County earlier this month, Shackleton said: “I felt more nervous getting to the ground and getting off the bus, rather than when I was told I was coming on.

“When I got told I was just like a bit of a ‘right, okay, we’re going on’ and then before I knew it, it was the end of the game, so I didn’t think about it too much.

“But it was more the pre-match stuff, that’s where I felt a bit of nerves. It helped that the team were 4-1 up. Even though it was a 20 minute period you want to do everything you can to catch the manager’s eye, catch everyone’s eye.

“You don’t want to go on and just have an average performance. You want to do everything you can to stand out in that time.”

The Kippax youngster is enjoying working with United’s new head coach Bielsa.

He added: “He’s a world class manager, one of the best in the world, so to know that he’s willing to bring someone as young as myself on, it’s encouraging.

“I really enjoy training with him and the staff I’ve worked with, his coaching staff, are all brilliant and really supportive, making pre-season for me really enjoyable.”

He's only 19...but Leeds United starlet Jamie Shackleton is already targeting a UEFA coaching licence

Leeds United midfielder Jamie Shackleton.
Jamie Shackleton turned 19 on Monday, a footballer with many years ahead of him, but the Leeds United youngster is already pursuing plans for a future in coaching.

Shackleton took his first step into senior football with a club debut against Derby County in August and academy staff at Thorp Arch have long been confident about a talented teenager realising his potential.

Shackleton has played only five times for United’s first team - three appearances in the Championship and two in the League Cup - but he intends to qualify for his UEFA B licence before the end of this season, beginning the process of setting himself up for the day when he retires.

Speaking to League Football Education magazine, created by the EFL and the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), Shackleton said: “I’m looking at studying for my UEFA B licence in coaching this year and get that in the bag early so I’m in a good position already for when I finish playing.

“It’s definitely something I’ll be able to use as a way of focusing my mind off my own performance and take some pressure off in that way - as well as setting me up for a future after football, which hopefully won’t be for a long time yet.

“It can also help my game right now, learning how to support and deal with players, and it makes you think about the bigger picture of the game rather than just your own individual role. It’s definitely something I’m hoping to sort out soon.”

Shackleton was a midfielder during his time in Leeds’ academy but has been used as a right-back by head coach Marcelo Bielsa, who targeted him and a handful of other development-squad players as first-team material in the summer.

“He’s spent a lot of time with me, learning different movements and different requirements for the position because I’ve never played there before,” Shackelton said.

“The manager’s obviously seen qualities in me to put me there and I feel I’ve adapted well so far. With the way we play it’s an attacking position and I like to go forward as I did in midfield so it does suit my game. “I think it’s a good quality to be able to play a few positions. I used to be a winger when I was nine or 10, then I’ve played centre-midfield ever since and now I’ve been pushed to right-back for a few games.”

Shackleton said Bielsa’s attention to detail and strict mentality had become apparent in the early days of pre-season, underlined by an order from United’s boss for his players to spend time collecting litter around their training ground.

“There were a few of the Under-23s players that were selected to train with the first team from day one of pre-season and I was one of them,” Shackleton said.

“In the second week of pre-season, we spoke about the fans and how they’re the most important people to this club, how passionate they are and what it means to them to go and watch us play football.

“Their lives involve a lot of hard work throughout the week to be able to afford a ticket for the weekend so we had our own insight into a bit of hard graft away from football by going round the whole training ground clearing all the litter from the pitches, bushes, everything really.”

SECRET SCOUT: Leeds full back Jamie Shackleton plays a mature game

Our scout is a top football expert who attends matches each week searching for the next star. He'll bring you his verdict in Sportsmail.

This week the man in the spotlight is Leeds full back Jamie Shackleton.

The man in Sportsmail's spotlight this time is Leeds full back and 19-year-old Jamie Shackleton
WHAT HAS HE GOT?

JAMIE SHACKLETON PROFILE

CLUB: Leeds United

POSITION: Full back

AGE: 19

VALUE: £3m

This locally-born youngster impressed me in a senior game (an FA Cup tie at QPR) and also an academy fixture.

A small right back, Shackleton is nimble on his feet and with quick, short strides he gets into opposition territory quickly.

He plays a mature game and I like the way he covers close to his centre back when play develops on the opposite flank. He enjoys getting forward, bursting to make a quick overload. Indeed his immediate opponent in one game seemed irritated that he was being constantly forced back to track Shackleton's runs.

Although I saw him drive two superb 40-50 yard 'pingers' out wide, his strength seems to be his vision to spot and play the short pass at close quarters. Shackleton looks very much a footballing full back who uses the early 'push' pass to good effect.

His combinations down the right in the second game I saw were excellent, making a speedy triangle with his fast outside right and clever right midfielder. In the second half, his coach switched him to midfield and he was quieter and, tightly marked, unable to influence the game as much.

However, his attitude, enthusiasm and general bubbliness impressed me.

Shackleton is nimble and with quick, short strides he gets into opposition territory quickly

WHAT DOES HE NEED?

At only 5ft 7in, scouts may analyse his back-post defending but I see a midfield player emerging. He is quick to spot danger, intercept and break away from his immediate opponent.

Now with three league starts behind him, his accuracy of pass and sharpness in tight areas - allied to his speed - will get him a decent career.

Over the years, Leeds have produced a plethora of young talent and Shackleton could well make the grade. He has a good chance of being in the Premier League next season with his club - but perhaps it will be as a midfielder.

Jamie Shackleton shone as Leeds United held on to win the Professional Development League Play-Off final on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes – and Leeds fans have drooled over the player’s performance.

Jack Clarke, Ryan Edmondson, Aapo Halme and Gaetano Berardi all started the match along with Shackleton, who continued to impress from the right side of defence despite being a natural central midfielder.

Both sides hit the woodwork throughout, with Birmingham City’s left-back Remeao Hutton striking an excellent effort off of Kamil Miazek’s crossbar. Matuesz Bogusz hit the post from a free-kick.

Ryan Edmondson also had a goal disallowed for offside, leaving Leeds with a penalty shootout. But the Whites were victorious, as Kamil Miazek saved two penalties. Ryan Edmondson, Clarke, Kun Mihaylov and Pascal Struijk scored.

Shackleton was excellent throughout. Defensively, the 19-year-old was rock solid for Leeds but it was his attacking play that perhaps caught the eye of the Elland Road support – which was believed to be in the region of 6000.

The 19-year-old looked a class above for the Whites, and has proved that he is one of the best up-and-coming talents in the Leeds reserves after Marcelo Bielsa has given him 22 appearances this season.

Leeds fans reacted on Twitter to Shackleton’s display for the Whites, with many stunned at how he is not getting a more regular game in the senior side. He was replaced in the 115th minute by Kun.

Jamie Shackleton opens up on Leeds United, Marcelo Bielsa, giving everything and playing right-back - Leeds Live

‘Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard’ and doesn’t Leeds United’s Jamie Shackleton know it.

The quote, from the lesser known Tim Notke, can probably be found plastered on the wall of your local gym or boxing club and is well used in professional sport to get bone idle talent off their backsides.

One professional sportsman lacking in neither department is the 19-year-old pocket rocket who has been taken into Elland Road hearts this season.

Shackleton impressed in pre-season and head coach Marcelo Bielsa saw what he loved in spades: work rate.

Now 19, Shackleton made his senior debut at 18 when the Whites were cruising at Derby County in August before a full league debut 10 days later at Swansea City.

Good luck with finding a deeper end to be chucked into than a Championship starting berth after the captain’s pulled up lame in the warm-up 15 minutes before kick-off.

Indeed, Shackleton was thrust into the limelight so late the media were left scratching their heads as to why Liam Cooper did not lead the team out of Liberty Stadium’s tunnel.

Regardless, Shackleton’s assist for Kemar Roofe’s 40th-minute equaliser was all the evidence anyone needed this kid was going to do just fine.

The Thorp Arch academy product has gone to make 22 appearances in all competitions and win admirers across the club’s fan base around the world.

“It’s not what I expected when I came back for pre-season. I came in and trained with them and, to be honest, didn’t expect to be as involved as I have been,” he said after winning the Premier League Professional Development League with the under-23s on Monday.

“I’ve really enjoyed this season and when I’ve been given the opportunities I’ve given everything I’ve got.”

Giving everything is one of the qualities which has not gone unnoticed among a core of supporters who merit nothing higher than putting a shift in.

“That’s a minimum, really. You need to have talent as well, but if you go out there and you work hard and everyone can see that then you can’t really complain,” said Shackleton.

Shackleton has been included in the vast majority of Bielsa’s matchday squads this season, the clear stand-out selection to make the leap from under-23s to senior football.

He has also been subjected to one of the transformations Bielsa has a habit of making with players and their positions.

Traditionally a central midfielder, Shackleton was thrust into right-back on that night in Swansea and rarely been played elsewhere by the head coach.

His is a name regularly touted by fans as a man they want to see more of, especially when results are suffering, but which position does he prefer?

Carlos Corberan lifts the lid on how Marcelo Bielsa revolutionised Leeds United's under-23 champions

“I’ve been asked this a lot. It depends on the game, I do enjoy both. If you had asked me before this season: centre-mid all day long,” he said.

“I have enjoyed getting to know the position at right-back this year and that’s where I’ve played the majority of the time, so I enjoy both, I can’t pick for you.”

Carlos Corberan has been able to call upon Shackleton throughout the season for the under-23s, normally when his minutes have been limited with the first team.

It’s a role the teen has enjoyed, playing alongside team-mates he has called friends since the age of six.

Monday’s championship win proved the icing on the cake.

“I’ve played with some of them boys since we were six, seven-years-old, so to go and win the 23s, basically the step before the first team, the national title, it’s a great feeling,” he said.

The YEP also have an article about Jamie Shackleton, who we dealt with here yesterday as well:
A short conversation with any of those who work within the walls at Thorp Arch and they'll tell you that you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who works harder than Shackleton, either at senior level or below. It's clear that he just gets it.
"I think that's a minimum really, it's a given," he said of his high workrate. "Obviously you need to have talent but if you go out there and you work hard and everyone can see that then they can't really complain."

Good reading! Anbefales.

The emergence of Leeds United's Jamie Shackleton - Marcelo Bielsa, Carlos Corberan, Thorp Arch and calls to be freed

“There's a little boy, a midfield player called Jamie Shackleton. I think he's got a great chance," stated former Leeds United head coach and academy manager Neil Redfearn.

It's been a little over three years since those words were uttered, with Shackleton aged just 16 and about to be included on United's pre-season tour by then boss Garry Monk.

For those at Thorp Arch, the midfielder turned right-back’s stock has risen ever since.

"I think he's a good footballer," Redfearn continued. "He's got great feet. He's not the biggest but he's very tenacious. He reads the game well.”

Shackleton joined Leeds as a boy and despite his fresh-faced look has already displayed traits of men well beyond his years, even revealing an interest in taking his coaching badges ready for retirement despite his career being in its infancy.

“Jamie has a maturity which does not correspond to his age," Marcelo Bielsa said in December. "He plays like a veteran but he’s only 19."

Age, after all, is just a number. Actions speak louder than words. And it took Bielsa just a matter of weeks to thrust him into his pre-season plans in haste following his arrival in West Yorkshire last June.

A new position was required as the Argentinian saw traits in the youngster which he believed were more suited away from his natural position in midfield.

“I've been asked this a lot,” Shackleton grinned over questions about what his favoured position was, although it was hard to tell whether the ear-to-ear smile was due to him having minutes earlier helped United seal the Professional Development League national title.

"If you'd asked me before the season then I'd have said midfield all day long. But I've enjoyed getting to know the position at right-back this year and that's where I've played the majority of the time.
"I've never played there before so to learn it at this age is really quite late."

It is a tip of the hat to Shackleton that a position he was barely familiar with last summer has given him his main opportunities in the Championship.

His full league debut came in quick fashion last August as he stepped in to cover for the injured Liam Cooper at Swansea City while an injury to first choice full-back Luke Ayling presented another opportunity in November.

The Liberty Stadium, though, was where he really introduced himself to the Whites faithful as he bagged
an assist with a driving run into the box, setting up Kemar Roofe's equaliser in a 2-2 draw.

Leeds had already felt compelled to hand Shackleton a new three-year deal just a week earlier following his cameo in a 4-1 demolition of Saturday's play-off opponents Derby County.

“He can attack by surprise, he defends well and when he moves he has explosive movements," Bielsa said.
And it's not just his head coach who has noticed.

United fans have been impressed by his no-fear attitude, raw pace, high workrate and explosive play, so much so that the #FreeShackleton hashtag has been in use across social media this season as a call for him to see more on-field minutes.

The season, though, has been a whirlwind for him as much as everyone else with three league starts and 16 substitute appearances to his name. Not to mention the two assists in his 439 minutes of Championship action.

"It's not what I expected when I came back for pre-season," he reflected. "I came in and trained with them and to be honest I didn't expect to be as involved as I have been.

"I've really enjoyed this season and when I've been given opportunities I've given everything I've got."

Shackleton is another in the long list of the Thorp Arch success stories. Fellow development graduate Jack Clarke claimed the club's player-of-the-year award for his noticeable impact from the bench this season but there is as much hype around the winger as Shackleton.

On Monday the pair lined-up with long time team-mates Robbie Gotts and Alfie McCalmont as the Under-23s capped off a fine season with PDL glory in front of a near-8,000 crowd at Elland Road.

"I've played with some of those boys since we were six and seven years old," Shackleton said. "I think for academy lads all over the country this is the best place to be.

"If you're good enough you're given a chance in the first team. If you keep your head down and keep working hard everyday in training then it's going to come.
"You've got to really believe that."

It's clear that he does. And it has shown in his and the development team's play this season that there's an obvious link to the senior ranks.

"We're playing some unbelievable football which mirrors the first team," he said.

"Carlos (Corberan) works with both so he can bring ideas from that and work with us. When we go out there and play it's similar to the first team and it's good to watch. He's been key to that."

A pathway is in evidence from the Under-23s into the senior set-up, and not for the first time.
Corberan whenever asked reiterates one thing he always looks for in his young charges as he nurtures their development: mentality.

A wise head on young shoulders. And surely, if his rise continues on the path that it has undertaken over the past 12 months, it won't be long until he is freed.

Stort potensiale i gutten, ingen tvil.

Phillips' kontrakt utløper i '21.

The story of Jamie Shackleton's breakthrough season - and what to expect next

There are few better ways to embody just how much changed at Leeds United this season than by look at the year that Jamie Shackleton has had.

On May 11, 2018 the fresh-faced academy hopeful was one of ten players who came off the bench during the second half of Leeds United's 2-0 win over the Myanmar national team at the Mandalar Thiri Stadium in Mandalay.

Fast forward 12 months to the day and he was playing - and playing well - in Leeds United's semi-final play-off first leg win at Derby County.

The 19-year-old has been one of many success stories coming out of the Thorp Arch academy this season, a regular member of Marcelo Bielsa's first-team squad and key figure in Carlos Corberan's national title winning under-23 side, with his energetic displays earning him somewhat of a cult following among Leeds supporters.

The call to 'free Shackleton' was sounded across the fanbase over the final third of the campaign amid Bielsa's preference to stick with his usual starting XI, so it was somewhat fitting that the teenager finally got the chance for an extended run out on the turf where he made his senior debut.

Shackleton's 17-minute cameo against the Rams at Pride Park in August came amid a whirlwind few weeks for the youngster, who followed that up by signing a new contract, playing 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup and then a first league start at Swansea.

That was the culmination of 12 years of graft at the Thorp Arch academy, with the club bringing him from Kippax Athletic at the age of seven, before he singed forms when he was nine.

"[It was] a lot of hard work," Shackleton said following his debut in August. "I've worked with a lot of different coaches that have all helped me along the way. Some really good coaches and a few setbacks at times.

"I've played an age group down before due to my size, but ultimately it's all helped me and yeah, the hard work has gone into getting where I am at the moment."

One of those coaches was Neil Redfearn, who went on the record back in 2016 to talk up his chances.

"There's a little boy, a midfield player called Jamie Shackleton. I think he's got a great chance," said the former Whites academy boss and head coach.

"I think he's a good footballer, he's got great feet. He's not the biggest, but he's very tenacious. He reads the game well."

One of Shackleton's key attributes is proving to be his down-to-earth nature, evident when he revisited these comments.

"Well I was still playing 18s football, bit of 23s football at that time so it was still a way to go to playing first-team football I thought," he said. "It's a good thing to hear from a first-team coach and for him to have that belief in me and it's good that he's been right about it."

The teenager signed a new deal earlier this season
A seven-month injury lay-off during the first year of his apprenticeship was one of these blows, but Shackleton's application saw him return stronger than ever as he worked his way into being a regular in the under-23s squad last season before getting the nod to travel with the Paul Heckingbottom's first-team squad at the end of last season.

"Going to Myanmar was my first experience of being away with the club," he told the LFE in October. "They’re mad for football out there – so many people treated us like celebrities and it was all a bit mad really!

“I don’t think they knew who we were but just seeing an English club coming to play in their country, they loved it. It let me know I was close to the first-team at that point and gave me an insight into first-team experiences and being around the senior players.”

That initial taste of the first-team was followed by another summer of change, as Marcelo Bielsa came in to replace Heckingbottom in June.

The Argentine arrived in West Yorkshire fresh from a marathon videotape session, watching every game the club had played the season before and had seen plenty of Shackleton's under-23s exploits. He obviously liked what he saw, as the youngster was quickly put in with the first-team for pre-season training.

“It’s not what I expected when I came back for pre-season. I came in and trained with them and, to be honest, didn’t expect to be as involved as I have been,” he said.

A number of outings in pre-season followed as Bielsa debuted him at right-back, rather than in the central midfield role in which he had come through the ranks at the academy.

Converting players to new positions has been a hallmark of Bielsa's career and it soon became obvious what the new Whites head coach saw in Shackleton, who's energy and surging runs down the right-hand side made him an obvious fit for Bielsa's system at Leeds.

Ever the eager student, Shackleton, who is already eyeing his coach badges, was quick to embrace this new role and says he now struggles to chose a preference between the two positions.

The next generation of Leeds United youngsters looking to break into the Under-23s side

Despite an eye-catching first start against Swansea, when he got the nod minutes before kick-off after an injury to Liam Cooper in the warm-up and would go on to register an assist, Shackleton would have to settle mainly for cameo roles as the season progressed.

This is where he showed the kind of attitude that has won him so many fans among the Leeds United supporter base has served him so well.

“That’s a minimum, really. You need to have talent as well, but if you go out there and you work hard and everyone can see that then you can’t really complain,” said Shackleton.

"If you're good enough you're given a chance in the first team at some point so if you keep your head down and keep working hard every day in training, then it's going to come. You've got to believe that."

Shackleton would spend the majority of the second half of the season involved in Bielsa's matchday squads, while helping Corberan's side to the PDL National under-23s crown.

And this synergy between Corberan's side and the first-team has only helped this integration.

Jamie Shackleton opens up on Leeds United, Marcelo Bielsa, giving everything and playing right-back

"It mirrors the first team and it works for both, so he can bring ideas from that and work with us," the Leeds-born teen continues. "When we go out there we play we play stuff that's similar to the first team and it's good to watch, so Carlos has been key to that.

"He's key here. He's the step between first team and the 23s and his ideas reflect on both teams. He helps when you play in the first-team, he helps when you play in the 23s. He's done a great job."

While for most 19-year-olds, establishing yourself in the first-team squad of a promotion candidate managed by one of world football's most respected coaches, plus a national title at youth level would mark an incredibly successful season, but it would appear Shackleton is not done yet.

When fit, Adam Forshaw is a regular name on Bielsa's teamsheets, meaning opportunities for Shackleton in his favoured central midfield position have been few and far between, given the from of Matuesz Klich and Kalvin Phillips.

So when the former Boro midfielder sank to the turf in the centre-circle just over 20 minutes into the first leg at Pride Park, Shackleton was presented with an opportunity to stake a claim.

Just as he shown all season, there were no signs of nerves from the 19-year-old, who took to his task with aplomb, as Leeds' press strangled the life out of Derby's key attacking players, which was in no small measure down to Shackleton's energy and verve in the middle of the park.

Offering a dynamism that has been sometimes lacking Forshaw's play, the Thorp Arch product came close to firing Leeds into a 2-0 lead during the second half as he forced an excellent save out of Kellie Roos. Forshaw missed the second leg and Bielsa had no qualms in turning to Shackleton, who was one of the best players on a disappointing night, as he showed the work rate and tenacity that fans have come to expect.

Leeds United's have a rich history of nurturing young talent that goes back to the 1960s when the core of Don Revie's great side broke through together as teenagers, and fans at Elland Road will always cheer a homegrown player that little bit louder.

This kind of support is evident by the groundswell of good will towards Shackleton from supporters, with the teen having the kind of approval ratings that Theresa May would die for.

And this support extends well beyond the terraces, with Bielsa explaining just how valued Shackleton is.

Injuries, Shackleton, Derby, Guardiola, Simeone - full transcript from Marcelo Bielsa's press conference

"Every time he played, honestly, we saw him," the Leeds head coach explained ahead of the second leg against Derby County.

"There’s a detail that is very important to me, which is how a player is accepted by his team-mates. When all the players accept a new young player it means that they like to have this player on their side.

"When a young player finds his place in a top team in the natural competition you have for the positions, the one who comes inside the team moves someone out of the team.

"That’s why from a team spirit the only way you accept the arrival of a young player is when you make the team better. And for me this happened very clearly with Jamie Shackleton."

These words were echoed by his skipper.

"He's an amazing young man, dead down to earth," Liam Cooper added. "He just wants to come in every day with a smile on his face and work hard. He deserves to be in the team, he deserves to play well because we see how hard he trains every day and I thought he was a different class on Saturday.

"Hopefully for him he'll stay in the team but i know if he doesn't he'll still be the same boy."

While Leeds' campaign ended in a crushing disappointment, Shackleton can take solace in the fact that better days in a Leeds United shirt await him.

His first England call-up has followed, with Paul Simpson naming him in the Under-20 squad for the Toulon tournament, where the teenager will be hoping to continue his late-season momentum and carry it into Marcelo Bielsa's pre-season.

With Bielsa confirming that he will be staying at Leeds United for another year, Shackleton can expect to be a key part of the head coach's core squad next term. A bright future awaits.

Jamie Shackleton primed to fill valuable role for Marcelo Bielsa

Jamie Kemp
Of the many sub-plots that came together to produce Leeds’ play-off second leg against Derby, few will be worth remembering. The details of that night are too heavy to recount; too galling and too worthless now, with pre-season for 2019–20 underway. What happened under the lights on May 15th has no need for elaboration. And anyway, even with the benefit of having attended and re-watched the game, the overriding conclusions are still hazy. “It’s not necessary to analyse (the game),” as Marcelo Bielsa said shortly after full time.

Bielsa was right — trying to find reasons why Leeds’ season had ended was pointless then. The consequences of the result were abrupt and definitive. Leeds weren’t going to be promoted and the season was over, with any other implications falling underneath that. The future for Leeds, and how the events of May 15th had influenced it, would take some time to be pieced together.

At the forefront of this future, wedged in between the colliding realities of Leeds’ promotion dream and their crushing collapse, was Jamie Shackleton.

“From a team spirit (point of view), the only way you accept the arrival of a young player is when you make the team better. And for me this happened very clearly with Jamie Shackleton.” — Marcelo Bielsa, May 2019
The 19-year-old first played for Leeds back in August 2018, coming off the bench for the final 17 minutes away at Pride Park. In between then, he had performed the role of sometimes substitute: a 10-minute reliever for an exhausted midfield teammate, or occasionally as a bolt of electricity from full-back late in games. In December, injuries led Shackleton into consecutive league starts as the deputy right-back, although he then wouldn’t feature again as a starter in the league until May. The play-offs — Leeds’ biggest pair of games in over a decade — from which he began on the bench, and went on to play 156 of 180 possible minutes.

Leeds’ second leg against Derby was Jamie Shackleton’s fourth league start in professional football. It was his second league start at Elland Road, and his first ever league start while playing in his natural midfield position.

For the circumstances of his appearance in the team, compounded by the size of the event and the fact that he spent much of his time man-marking Mason Mount — one of the standout young English players in his age range, who played 38 games last season — Shackleton’s performances were the most consequential sub-plot of the play-offs in regards to Leeds’ immediate future, as well as a timely reminder in the final throes of the season that the 19-year-old’s inclusion in Bielsa’s squad is not simply a case of making up the numbers.

Although comfortable playing at right-back, the play-offs offered us the chance to see Shackleton playing in central midfield for his first extended minutes in the first team. And even from the evidence of the 2019 play-offs alone, it’s clear to see what Shackleton offers in this position, and how that can be effective for Leeds in the short-term.

Shackleton carries Leeds up the field late on in the play-off first leg — v Derby (A)
The most striking aspect of Shackleton’s game is the natural tempo with which he plays. This is a theme that carries over practically all of his actions on the pitch. Even in the most basic responsibilities — be it playing a short pass wide to a full-back, or simply recovering position goal-side of his marker after Leeds turn over possession — Shackleton is always looking to get through his tasks sharply, allowing for as little waste as possible. This is a particularly good trait for a teenager, given that the natural struggle for players of Shackleton’s age is usually the reverse: they have difficulty meeting the speed of the senior game, and are more prone to dwelling in their decisions.

In possession, Shackleton looks to set himself quickly and keep play moving through the team with rhythm. As we can see in the graphic below, his use of the ball in the play-offs came almost exclusively through short, high-efficiency passes, seeking combinations and promoting movement in classic Bielsa style.

Shackleton’s completed passes in the 2018–19 play-offs — v Derby (A)
This was characteristic of Shackleton and Leeds alike. While the teenager is sharp and economical in possession — he turned the ball over with just 19.7% of his touches in the Championship last season — the Whites are also a team who look to advance their play quickly through midfield areas.

Despite having the highest rate of possession in the Championship last season, Leeds ranked 20th in the league for the percentage of their passes that were made in the middle third of the pitch. This evidences the way in which Bielsa wanted his team to play — with patient build-up in the defensive third, but then the acceleration through midfield and into the attacking third. Leeds would rarely be seen preserving the ball in safe midfield areas with long spells of lateral passing, even in the later stages of games when they held a comfortable lead.

This way of playing makes Shackleton highly compatible with Bielsa’s ideas, particularly in the №8 role. Given the tempo at which he operates, it’s conducive to the 19-year-old always moving quickly into the next phase of play — once the ball is passed, Shackleton is already looking for the return or to create space. This ability to transition quickly from defence to attack (and vice-versa) is a key attribute, and one that has heightened value playing under Marcelo Bielsa.

When assessing central midfielders, we would usually consider speed and agility to be lower-priority skills. Welcome, of course, but not essential, compared to that of a winger or a forward. However, Shackleton is able to harness these as the driver for his play in a way that makes him a fairly unique case as a box-to-box midfielder.

Shackleton goes the length of the pitch in transition — v Derby (A)
The 19-year-old is effective at progressing the ball, both through dribbling and taking up good positions in support runs. When you then factor in the speed at which he’s able to do so, it presents a real problem for opposition midfielders who will rarely come up against players as quick as Shackleton in central areas. In the open field he is simply a mismatch for most, while he needs no invite to go through the gears.

Shackleton seizes open midfield space in transition — v Sheff Utd U23’s (H)
Likewise, Shackleton knows he can exploit space over short distances to create more favourable situations for the team. Just small injections of tempo can take Leeds from a neutral position into an attack with momentum, and these too are moments which he will learn to pick more precisely as he gains in experience and gets a better feel for how he can use his attributes to his advantage.

Shackleton gets Leeds into the final third with a short burst — v Bolton (A)
In addition to his obvious value in possession, Shackleton also projects as a competitive defender within Bielsa’s system. The Argentine once summed up his strategy on defending as “we run all the time”, stating that it’s easier to stop danger than it is to create. The reality of it is a bit more precise however, with Leeds playing a rare man-to-man marking style and handing individual assignments for each player out of possession in every game.

On the whole though, much of Leeds’ work in defensive duties comes through individual duels, recovering position and getting bodies around the ball. This suits Shackleton’s skill-set, particularly given the amount of pursuit that Leeds often have to do out of possession. His energy and quickness to the ball was apparent in the play-offs against Derby, especially in what were two highly competitive games featuring lots of contested duels.

Uses speed to prevent counter-attack and immediately gets ahead of the ball — v Derby (H)
Shackleton has split his minutes across central midfield and right-back for both the first team and the U23’s in 2018–19. This co-existence between the two positions compliments his defensive work across the two, with both roles forcing him to become adept in different situations. In midfield, Shackleton stands out for his speed of pressing and then recovering if he finds himself ahead of play.

Shackleton locates Luke Freeman in transition to prevent counter-attack — v QPR (H)
At full back, Shackleton gets challenged in 1v1 duels much more frequently, and this is another situation in where we see how well his physical ability serves him. The teenager’s agility allows him to adjust his feet very quickly, which when coupled with his aggression in contact, makes him a tricky opponent to get rid of.

Although he is small in stature, Shackleton is able to use the benefits of his physical ability — low centre of gravity, agility and endurance — to outweigh the potential drawbacks when playing against bigger, stronger opponents. Within Bielsa’s system where his players are expected to play with maximum intensity, Shackleton fits the bill more than adequately.

Shackleton gets tight to Bersant Celina and robs possession — v Swansea (A)
It remains to be seen what role Bielsa will deem appropriate for Shackleton in 2019–20, but there is little doubt that the Argentine knows the value of what he can bring to the team.

With the benefit of another full pre-season — coming off the back of mature performances in the play-offs against Derby, as well as a subsequent call-up to the England U20 squad for the Toulon Tournament — the young midfielder appears to be gathering momentum at the beginning of what looks to be a potential-filled career.

Trolig skadet.

*her tok jeg feil, 18/19: 19 kamper
                         19/20: 22 kamper

Can you talk about the quality of Jamie Shackleton? He seems to come on into games and fit straight in?
Today, it took him a little longer to adapt to the game. In the last game he was slightly more influential. He's a player with good organisation, he's energetic, he's quick, he can surprise opponents and he plays in a position which has many varieties as a box-to-box midfielder.

He defends with Phillips and attacks with Pablo. Sometimes he plays on the left-centre side of the pitch or the right-centre side in the same game. All those things at this level are not easy to resolve. But he is a player with character and whenever he comes on he always takes on the responsibility.

January arrivals or not, Marcelo Bielsa is building Leeds United a midfielder fit for the Premier League present
Jamie Shackleton took a little time to settle in against West Brom, said Marcelo Bielsa after the 5-0 rout.

By Graham Smyth    Thursday, 31st December 2020, 5:44 am

The Leeds-born academy graduate stepped off the bench out of necessity with half an hour or so to go, Mateusz Klich having limped off.

When Bielsa sends Shackleton on, the end result is normally a good one, his record is fairly remarkable in that regard, winning 80.5 per cent of his 41 sub appearances.

Overall he has won 70 per cent of the 57 games he has played. To give that a little more context, none of the 33 players in club history with a higher win percentage have played more than 15 times for Leeds.

He has had the good fortune to break through under the manager with the highest win ratio, but in another sense he has been unlucky.

He might not trade any of those full-time celebrations as a used substitute for the world, but the presence of the ever-present Klich has prevented him from getting the starts his potential suggests he is worth.

In Klich, Bielsa has his ideal box-to-box midfielder, an attacking and defensive menace, one built from stern stuff, somehow maintaining fitness, despite the arduous tasks of his role, throughout Bielsa’s tenure without picking up injuries – until Tuesday night that is.

His thigh injury might just present a problem for Leeds and a chance for Shackleton, who, on recent evidence, is a more than adequate understudy.

He can play right-back – that’s where he featured when he replaced Klich against Burnley in the second half, with Stuart Dallas moving into the middle – but the midfield role he occupied at the Hawthorns is where his future most likely lies.

In the game against the Clarets, with Leeds having to defend so much, Shackleton had few chances to impress in possession but his quick feet did allow him to showcase a nice touch and turn that left Dale Stephens in his wake.

It was the kind of tidy control we have become used to seeing from Shackleton and the burst of breakneck speed that accompanies it allows him to spring into open space, where Leeds look most dangerous.

Beating Stephens high up the pitch allowed the Whites to unbalance Burnley and build an attack that could have sealed the game, had Pablo Hernandez found Patrick Bamford.

“He is a player with good organisation who is energetic, he is quick, he can surprise opponents,” said Bielsa on Tuesday.

Even if Shackleton can’t surprise his man, he is trustworthy in possession, keeps it simple and makes good choices.

Despite his tender age, youthful exuberance is only found in his energy and willingness and not in irresponsibility. He knows the importance of taking care of possession and in being where he needs to be.

That understanding was on display in his performance against the Baggies, although as Bielsa pointed out, ‘it took him a little longer to adapt to the game’ and there was an errant first touch and an uncharacteristic misplaced pass early on.

That pass came a minute after £29m Rodrigo gave the ball away. Even stars aren’t perfect.

Shackleton shook it off and went in search of the ball with just as much appetite and was functional, if not spectacular –although in this team, playing in this way, functional is sometimes spectacular enough.

He made a couple of nice recoveries, the second of which gave Leeds the ball ahead of their fifth and best goal.

Having won it deep in his own half, Shackleton fed Jack Harrison and moved forward, taking advantage of space in behind Conor Gallagher to make himself available for Dallas and when the Ulsterman found him, Shackleton played it back perfectly, first time.

It wasn’t just Shackleton’s touch, it was his little dart into space that pulled another defender out of place and gave Dallas time to find Raphinha, who curled in a beauty.

“As a box-to-box midfielder he defends with Phillips and attacks with Pablo,” said Bielsa.

“Sometimes he appears on the left of centre or the right, all in the same game. All those things at this level it is not easy to resolve but he is a player with character and he takes on the responsibility.”

This level, a level Klich took 30 years to reach, is the Premier League, where world class talent abides, but still Shackleton, 21, holds Bielsa’s trust.

Buying a midfielder should still be on the to-do list next summer, if the right one isn't suddenly available for the right price in January - Bielsa isn't expecting to make a signing yet knows Victor Orta is poised to take advantage of any opportunities that arise - but Leeds are building one at Thorp Arch fit for the present, never mind the future.

Først ett utlån eller to.

Alt for tynn.

Sikkert, men nivået i PL blir for høyt.

Intervju i YEP.

'
“It’s also coming up against better players in training. Coming up against top-class forwards and wingers that we have inside the club definitely helps. Cry Summerville, is a nightmare to mark. He’s really sharp. For his size he’s very, very strong. I do my best to keep up with him and the other wingers. We’ve got some very sharp wingers at the club.

“And Luke Ayling is a very good and a solid defender, one v one, so he’s definitely someone who I can look to learn off, particularly defensively, which is an area I’ve looked to improve.”

Shackleton’s last performance, against Watford, was one of his best in recent memory for Leeds. It earned him praise from Bielsa and former Leeds full-back Tony Dorigo.

The youngster kept things tight defensively and looked after the ball efficiently, while trying to get forward in support of Raphinha.

Having a Brazilian international playing in front of him, particularly a winger so willing to do the other side of the game so diligently, must be any full-back’s dream, although predicting what he might do next cannot be easy.

“It’s nice to have a player of his quality who can find passes and find runs in front,” said Shackleton.

“He’s someone who also works hard for the team defensively. It makes my job easier and he’s good to play with.

“I think the more time you spend with him the more you can get used to his game. Even so, there are some passes and tricks that are still a shock and surprising to me. He’s a talented player and more than capable.”

Bielsa’s use of Shackleton has at times alternated between central midfielder and full-back, trusting the academy graduate to handle the attacking and defensive responsibilities that go with either role.

The 22-year-old is thrilled to be playing, so is hardly going to quibble over a position, but in any case you have to be versatile in this team.

“I enjoy both,” he said.

“I think in midfield you have to do both anyway and even at right-back you have to be able to do both. In both positions both sides of the game are really important to me.”

One day he might be able to definitively call himself Leeds United’s central midfielder, or Leeds United’s right-back.

This season he just wants to call himself a Leeds United player, on as many occasions as possible.

“My aim is to get as many minutes as possible, 100 per cent,” he said.

“To be on the pitch and helping the team towards winning games and finishing higher in the table is the aim.”

It’s also the dream.

Her fra Leeds-Live:
Shackleton settles in

The wondering about Jamie Shackleton, it seems, can finally stop now. The 23-year-old’s contract expires next June and an underwhelming loan at Millwall in the second tier had all suggested he may eventually leave in this transfer window.

However, the academy product seems to have won over Farke and secured his place in this squad for the season. The dearth of central midfielders at the start of pre-season gave Shackleton a foot in the door, but he has forced that door open and taken his chance.

On Tuesday night, he would play at right-back, but he played at left-back on Saturday, right-wing against Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion, as well as midfield against Shrewsbury Town. Shackleton’s versatility is one appeal to Farke, but his work rate, fitness, determination, attitude and reliability have left the manager purring.

His integral role in last night’s plan was highlighted by the 99 touches he had. Nobody in the stadium had the ball more than him or made as many passes as him.

Not only touches and passes, but quality. Shackleton would create four chances and complete four dribbles, using his small size and pace to terrorise the Salford defence off the right side.

While Djed Spence was applying the finishing touches to his loan at Elland Road, Shackleton was demonstrating just why Farke will be keen to keep him around beyond Friday night. He is unlikely to start every week, but Shackleton is the kind of versatile glue that knits squads together from the bench.

Farke var heller ikke snau:
When you've got injury problems and you haven't quite got all your players in yet,how important as a player like Jamie Shackleton, who can play in different positions?

I really love Jamie. So I think he's sometimes really underrated because he can play all positions wherever he plays, he's always reliable, always solid, always a good teammate, gives us everything. Sometimes even a bit of his problem that he has to play so many different roles and sort of coming into rhythm on one more but I think he proved again tonight as his unbelievable piece of our squad and I'm really really happy to have him definitely

Jeg Jar tenkt litt. Som back funker shack. Ihvertfall offensivt.
