Gelhardt signeres sannsynligvis for rundt 1 million pund på en 4-årskontrakt.

Striker on joining Leeds United.
New Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt spoke to LUTV after completing his move to Elland Road from Wigan Athletic.

The 18-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Whites after joining the Latics for an undisclosed fee.

Gelhardt, who featured 19 times in all competitions for Wigan last season, is thrilled to have completed his move to Elland Road.

“When I heard Leeds were interested I was made up,” said Gelhardt.

“It’s a massive club and going into the Premier League now, hopefully I can kick on as a player and help the team make some very good memories.

“I’ve watched Leeds a few times on television and the side play with a very high intensity and don’t stop working until the 90th minute, I think that suits my style of play and I like working hard.

“I like scoring goals and being creative and I’m not scared to take on an opponent, of course I’ve still got a lot to develop as a player, but Marcelo Bielsa he is a great manager and hopefully I can develop under him.

“I’ve seen a few young players come through the ranks at Leeds, Tom Pearce was at Wigan with me and he told me a lot about the club which helped me a lot and it was a big factor for me.

“As a child you dream of playing in the Premier League, it’s the best league in the world and hopefully I will get the chance to do that this season.

“It’s a proud moment for me and my family, they’ve been pushing me to do it and I wanted to do it, so we’re all really happy it’s done.”

Joe Gelhardt: Why are Leeds so keen on the Wigan forward?
FocusOnLeeds  General Football Articles, Leeds United Articles  July 21, 2020 4 Minutes
Over the past week Leeds United have been heavily linked with the signing of Joe Gelhardt from Wigan with the club believed to have met with him and his agent yesterday for talks. The Liverpool born Striker who joined Wigan in 2013 made his Wigan debut in April 2019 against Birmingham City and has since gone on to play twenty times for Wigans first team, scoring one goal.

Despite only scoring one goal for the first team, at youth level for Wigan and England he hasn’t struggled to find the net. Across his combined 24 appearances at U16s, U17s, and U18s football for England, he has found the net on eleven occasions (Transfermarkt). His skill set stretches beyond just being a poacher and in fact has played more as a number 10 or a wide player for Wigan. He likes to drop deep in order to find space and then look to pass the ball forward or look to work room for a shot on goal. Below is a great example of him finding space, shifting the ball onto his stronger left foot before finding the top corner.

He is only 5ft 10 and does lack real pace however has a stocky build and is hard to knock off the ball. Physically he is well developed and hasn’t struggled with the demanding conditions of championship football, as the clip below demonstrates.

Not only has he been able to hold his own physically, he’s showed that he’s got a creative side to his game, particularly when working the ball onto his left foot. He does well to roll the challenge here before finding a perfectly waited through ball, highlighting his vision and his strength.

When you combine this with his dribbling ability and positivity on the ball, he’s hard to stop once he gets going. He’s only 18 but shows real confidence when on the pitch, as you can see here against Nottingham Forest. He picks the ball up on the right and his first thought is to drive into the box and wins a penalty for his side.

All the above examples show exactly what Gelhardt is all about. For his age he has a great awareness of what’s around him and does well to bring his team mates into the game. In the 419 minutes he has played this season in the championship, has created 7 chances, completed 16 dribbles (53%) and made 60 accurate passes (67%). You would like to see his passing accuracy be higher but it is a small sample size and there are other aspects like Wigan’s style of play that would influence this. Although these stats aren’t amazing, he does play in a Wigan team that don’t score many and has mainly been used as a sub. If you take a look at his heat map for the season, you can see that despite mainly playing as a secondary striker or as a number 10, he likes to operate in the half space a lot.

2019/20 Season heatmap via SofaScore
The half space is the area he managed to score his only senior goal from. He received the ball, turned really smartly before eventually smashing it past Hull City’s keeper.

In terms of areas for improvement, he’s only 5ft 10 which means that aerial he doesn’t win much and is more of a ball into feet striker, which of course suits Leeds as we don’t play long anyway. He is only 18 so he could still potentially grow, but even if he doesn’t I don’t think its something to be concerned with. Over time he’ll learn to find space away from players rather than directly competing with them. He is also not naturally fast, his acceleration is good but across 30-40 meters not as good. This is something I feel could be improved slightly with a tailored training program as we’ve seen with the first team, who under Bielsa are all 5-10 yards sharper. There are other areas like decision making, positioning and a few Wigan fans have commented that his fitness isn’t the best but all things will get better as he gains more experience.

Despite only playing just under 500 minutes for Wigan, his emergence has brought the attention of a lot of premier league clubs with Liverpool and Everton linked in the past and Leeds and Leicester currently heavily linked. Who ever lands the signature is getting themselves a talented player with a high ceiling at what is looking like a reduce fee due to Wigans finical problems. You would expect that he’d come in as an under 23 player given his little experience, but will train with the first team and look to make a few appearances in cup games or as a sub. I hope you enjoyed this article, its only a brief report as the footage available of Joe is limited. If the deal does happen, then I’ll look to do an updated article after I’ve seen Joe play more games.

'He’s explosive and powerful' - the inside story on Leeds United's Joe Gelhardt from those who know him
The Whites landed the highly-rated forward last month.
By Joe Urquhart  Friday, 4th September 2020, 6:00 am

It is due to an unfortunate circumstance at Wigan Athletic that Joe Gelhardt finds himself as a Leeds United player.

The highly-rated 18-year-old had a long list of suitors and a wealth of options to choose from last month, but decided his future was best placed with Leeds United by putting pen to paper on a four-year contract at Elland Road.

The Whites appealed most for a player who saw the bigger picture, selecting a club and head coach known for their reliance and belief in giving youth a chance.

Gelhardt, who joined Wigan at the age of 10, arrived in West Yorkshire with a growing reputation in the game and it hasn’t taken long for those behind the four walls of Thorp Arch to realise why.

The England youth international is just a month into life with Leeds, but is already said to be making a huge impression with his new club.

The forward made his debut for the Latics in August 2018 aged just 16, before taking on a larger role in Paul Cook’s squad last term.

Two starts and 16 substitute appearances followed as the youngster shot to prominence by grabbing his first goal for the club last September against Hull City.

His impact was swift at the KCOM, finding the back of the net three minutes after his introduction to earn his side a hard-fought point.

Those who know ‘Joffy’ say it is a trait he has always possessed; the ability to shock and surprise.

“I remember one junior game against Huddersfield, after 15 minutes, one of the coaches said: ‘Joffy could get 10 here’,” recalled Kenny Williams, Wigan’s head of academy recruitment.

“And he did. We won something like 10-7 and he scored the lot! I’ve still got his boots and shirt from that game, as a nice little memento.

“Their manager came over afterwards and said: ‘We’re actually a good side. He’s some player that lad’.”

Comparisons of Wayne Rooney quickly reared their head as the Liverpool-born striker continued to make a serious impact with his feet in the academy set-up.

“I think it is because he is of similar stature, similar size,” Gregor Rioch, Wigan’s academy manager told the YEP.

“He’s explosive and powerful. He likes to dribble and he can score a range of goals. He can always catch you by surprise and make you put your hand over your mouth in disbelief, so that’s where it probably comes from.

“If you’re going to get the best out of Joe you’ll put him through the middle in some capacity. He likes stretching the opposition, keeping them back.”

It says as much to Gelhardt’s nature that he swiftly donated to Wigan’s fundraising effort, as the club who gave him a footballing platform continue their search for a buyer.

Perhaps, though, it is his character that also provides an explanation as to his quick influence at Leeds.

“He’s not a nervous type of character in the slightest,” Rioch continued.

“He’s a very confident but humble kid. One of the proudest parts of Joe is how we’ve helped develop him as a person.

“He loves playing football. When he finishes training he’s often seen in the park at the back of where he lived playing with his little brother.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s against Premier League teams or against his brother’s mates, he just loves playing football.

“When you have that as an intrinsic characteristic it’s a great platform to work from.”

Gelhardt has swapped a kick around with his friends and family for the guidance of world-renowned head coach Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds.

He has opted to fulfil his ambitions in LS11, and it seems there is no better fit.

“I think Bielsa has got a reputation and so much experience in different countries,” Rioch added.

“It will be wonderful for Joffy to work with Bielsa and for him to get the best out of him at this age where he still has a lot of learning to do and a lot of growth to come.

“He’s now got to establish himself as a player that has to get more games. That’s going to be his challenge as an 18-year-old. He’s young and the good thing about Leeds United is that they’ve given him a lengthy contract.

“It’s not necessarily about what he does in the next six months, it’s over the period of the next three to four years.

“He’s had a great foundation from Paul Cook at Wigan and that next step for him is to play against better players which will be fantastic for him.

“He’ll embrace it and take it in his stride. Leeds is a fantastic football club. It’s a giant and it’s back where it belongs.

"Over the years you only have to look down the corridors at the training ground to see the players who have come through. The way they have developed players over the years has been incredible.

“He goes with our blessing because he has been an incredible player for us and we’ll always keep an eye out for him.”

According to  @footyinsider247  Leeds United have rejected multiple loan approaches from Championship clubs for Joe Gelhardt, with manager Marcelo Bielsa insistent the 18 year old attacker continues his development at Thorp Arch

Så here goes...

Bielsas tanker rundt Joseph Paul Gelhardt.

Pablo Hernandez' latest injury reveals where Marcelo Bielsa sees 'dangerous' Joe Gelhardt in Leeds United pecking order
Pablo Hernandez’ latest injury has revealed where Marcelo Bielsa sees Joe Gelhardt in the Leeds United pecking order.
By Graham Smyth  Tuesday, 9th February 2021, 4:44 pm

When the Spanish magician fell victim to a minor muscle problem in the Whites’ final football session in preparation for the visit of Crystal Palace, Bielsa turned to 18-year-old Gelhardt to give him the required attacking options on the bench.

It was the former Wigan Athletic youngster’s first involvement in a Premier League squad and came on the back of another impressive Under-23s display a day earlier.

Gelhardt scored two to help Mark Jackson’s side beat their Middlesbrough counterparts 4-2 and took his Premier League 2 tally for the season to seven. But his performances in the 23s before Sunday’s win had already impressed Bielsa.

“Prior to the game [on Sunday] he had been one of the better players in the 23s,” said the head coach, who revealed that Jackson suggested Gelhardt for Monday’s squad.

“Given the absence of Pablo, Tyler could play as a number 10 or as a striker and the same for Gelhardt.

“I follow every 23s game closely and we constantly ask for advice from their manager.

“He suggested we think of Gelhardt and we thought it was a correct recommendation.”

Gelhardt was signed last summer from Wigan having already tasted men’s football with the Latics, playing 19 times in the Championship and making FA Cup and EFL Cup debuts during Paul Cook’s tenure at the DW Stadium.

First team opportunities had eluded the England youth international at Elland Road until this week but Bielsa had previously spoken of his progress, along with fellow new boy and friend Sam Greenwood.

“They have been playing well to deserve minutes,” he said earlier in the season after Greenwood and a number of 23s prospects were involved in the FA Cup game at Crawley.

Since their arrival last summer Gelhardt and Greenwood have both caught the imagination of fans and pundits alike with their performances up front and in attacking midfield for Jackson’s 23s.

Bielsa considers them interchangeable in the forward positions.

“Gelhardt is a player who when he is close to the box he is very dangerous and Greenwood is a player who has a lot of capacity to arrive into the free spaces,” he said in December.

“They can play with either Gelhardt in front and Greenwood in behind or the other way around.”

Hernandez' injury is not a serious one and Bielsa said his omission from the squad was precautionary.

"Pablo in the last football session we had picked up a minor muscular injury," said the Argentine.

"Although the injury was only a minor one it was better he didn't play today as a precaution."

The problem with Gelhardt at Wigan was that he never caused a problem. He excelled at every age level and, in the words of Wigan’s former coach Nick Chadwick, “he never failed to affect a game”. There were goals, there were assists and there was nothing in the way of a noticeable dip in his form. Wigan’s staff wondered how best to teach Gelhardt about managing adversity because adversity did not seem to find him.

Joe Gelhardt reveals Marcelo Bielsa pep talk on where he can improve
Joe Gelhardt has designs on becoming a first-team squad regular for Leeds United next season and the talented forward has opened up on the conversations he has held with Marcelo Bielsa over how he can continue to improve.

Gelhardt has had exposure with the seniors this season after an excellent first season with the club's U23s and he revealed a conversation with Bielsa as the Leeds boss encouraged the youngster to start making more runs in behind opposition defences to improve his chances of getting even more action next term.

"I'm a player who likes to get on the ball, drop low, and try to dribble past a player," he told Skrill, partners of the football club.

"What the manager's told me is I need to add more in-behind runs to my game – short, sharp, and more sprints.

"I've tried to take that on board as much as I can, and I've tried to implement it. He's a great manager with young players so everything he says you've got to take it on board."

He's excited for what's to come in the Premier League 2 top tier and what might follow, if his hard work, changes and learning continues.

"I can't wait to be fair, taking on the best teams in England at our age group," he said.

"I think we'll hold our own and I think we should do well.

"With a bit of hard work, hopefully [I'll make a debut]. If I keep my head down, knuckle down and be patient and if I impress the manager, do well in the sessions and I'm fit enough, then hopefully.

"That's the aim isn't it? Maybe a few times on the bench, and to make a debut would be a kid's dream wouldn't it?"

Under en Q&A på The Athletic:

Do you think Joffy will earn a full England call-up before being given his PL debut for Leeds? (Asbjorn S)

Ha. Another way of saying, why isn’t Gelhardt getting a proper go? It’s only a matter of time with him. The chance will come. On a bit of a tangent, I noticed something about Bailey Peacock-Farrell during the summer. Before this season, his international appearances were only just under 50 per cent of his league appearances. Which must be quite unusual for a player who had played 23 times for his country.

Kan vel like gjernposte denne her for evigheten.

I’ll miss commentating on Gelhardt. It was a fantastic experience Rolling on the floor laughingRolling on the floor laughing. I can now watch him from the stands and chuckle as he makes defenders look stupid. Great impact from the bench, also thought Rodrigo and Dallas were fantastic in the 2nd half. #LUFC

Bamford details Gelhardt message
Patrick Bamford has praised Joe Gelhardt and called him ‘a little Wayne Rooney’ after the youngster rescued a point for Leeds last week.

Nineteen-year-old Gelhardt came on as a substitute last weekend with Leeds United 1-0 down to Wolves. He then weaved his way into the box and was brought down by Nelson Semedo, earning Leeds a penalty which was scored by Rodrigo, drawing the match 1-1.

Asked about Gelhardt’s performance, striker Patrick Bamford, who has been out injured this month, praised the Leeds United youngster, nicknamed Joffy, for saving Leeds a point.

Bamford told the Official Leeds United Podcast: “He was like a little Wayne Rooney, and he is good. He’s very good. And he showed there what he can do.”

Bamford then added: “He’s built like a 26-year-old but obviously look at him in the face, he’s got a little baby face, but he’s going to be good and he's so unassuming as well.

“The only thing is, I did text him after and said obviously, ‘Well done, really well done,’ and I said, ‘You should have bloody scored two though.’”

Asked about Gelhardt’s seeming lack of nerves despite his age, Bamford said: “When you put a young player in it can either go one of two ways can’t it. They either go into their shell and they’re scared to do what they do or they just go in and they’re not worried about the outside pressure.”

Bielsa will have noticed the arcing of Gelhardt's runs as he attempted to block off Spurs' passing lanes, whilst pressing his opponent.

They were identical to the sleuth-like runs Bamford executes multiple times per game, stalking and pressing centre-backs by approaching them from their blind side.

https://www.leeds-live.co.uk/sport/leeds-united/joe-gelhardt-leeds-united-bielsa-22232422

In the 52nd minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, spurred on by the travelling Leeds support, he too attempted to alleviate the pressure the Whites were facing early in the second half, by single-handedly hassling Spurs into playing all the way back to Hugo Lloris.

He was roundly applauded.

Og statistikken var bra:
Gelhardt finished the game as the most prolific ball-carrier on the field, completing five of his seven attempted dribbles. Fifty-percent of his attempts were on target, too, including one effort which stung the palms of Lloris.

Joe Gelhardt loving life at Leeds United as teen reflects on journey so far and future ambitions
Joe Gelhardt had big reservations about Elland Road upon his first steps inside Leeds United’s famous ground as a player.
By Lee Sobot  Saturday, 16th April 2022, 4:45 am

In a Championship clash of February 2020, a 17-year-old Gelhardt was on the Wigan Athletic bench and the teenage forward was more than happy to stay there.

Gelhardt explained: “It’s the only one game where I’ve thought, ‘I don’t want to come on here’ because it was absolutely rocking.”

The striker didn’t come on but Wigan Athletic still won although it didn’t stop the Latics from going down and the Whites from going up as champions.

Then, come the summer, Gelhardt became a Leeds United player.

Two years on from wanting to stay on the Wigan bench, the irony is that Leeds United’s fans are now continually calling for the teen to be brought off the Whites one.

Times have certainly changed for the 19-year-old forward who is loving every minute of life at Leeds and now warmly embraces the motivational Elland Road roar.

Casting his mind back to before his Whites move had even materialised, Gelhardt told the YEP: “The first time I went to Elland Road I was playing against them and that’s when I first experienced the atmosphere.

“I was like, ‘Oh my God!’

“I’ve told a few of the lads, it’s the only one game where I’ve thought, ‘I don’t want to come on here’ because it was absolutely rocking.

“But when I made my Leeds debut at Elland Road, the noise was just crazy.

"It can be like a 12th man and you don’t get tired when they’re roaring and you just want to please them as much as possible.

“You hear them and they are roaring when you come on, there was one game where I was like, ‘Oh my God, these fans are crazy!’

“All it does is help you when you’re on the pitch.

"You don’t get tired, you want to run that extra yard for them, you want to do more for them so they’re happy and they can enjoy their weekend if we get a good result.

“I know people say, ‘the fans helped us,’ like as a cliche but with these fans they really do.

“When they’re screaming at the end of a game you’re just pushing and pushing and you just want to score or get a goal to make them happy as much as possible.”

Twice already this season at Elland Road, Gelhardt has done exactly that after being brought on from the Whites bench.

On his home and Premier League debut, the striker was introduced as a 62nd-minute substitute by former boss Marcelo Bielsa in October’s hosting of Wolves and the teen capped an explosive display by winning a 90th-minute penalty.

Record signing Rodrigo converted the spot kick to seal a last gasp 1-1 draw and send Elland Road wild and Gelhardt then bagged his first goal for Leeds two months later when netting what looked set to be an 83rd-minute equaliser at Chelsea only for the Blues to take all three points through Jorginho’s late penalty.

But Gelhardt then sparked scenes of a different level entirely another three months on via his first goal at Elland Road as part of an epic afternoon at LS11.

By then, Leeds were under the care of new boss Jesse Marsch following the sacking of promotion winning hero Bielsa and Marsch’s relegation-battling side looked to have thrown away two precious points as Kenny McLean bagged a 91st-minute leveller for bottom of the table Norwich City.

But Gelhardt had other ideas, the teen winning a header on the halfway line to set Raphinha away down the right and then racing into the box to convert his cross for the most dramatic of late winners in the 94th minute.

Elland Road truly erupted and even now the young forward is struggling to comprehend quite what went on.

“I can’t remember it!” he smiled.

“When something happens like that, like even against Chelsea when I scored, I can’t remember it. It’s just a blur.

“I remember heading it but I didn’t look at the ball, I was just looking at the man and then it came off my head and I was like ‘oh my God.’

“Then I saw Rapha and I thought he was going to score so I didn’t move and then he took it round and I thought ‘God I am going to have to get in the box now’ and then the rest from there was just a blur, I can’t remember it!”

Gelhardt, though, is creating memories that will last a lifetime and the teen is keeping himself firmly grounded around all the hype.

The Liverpool-born forward had already been compared to a young Wayne Rooney before signing for Leeds and the teen’s superb performances for United’s under-23s since joining have created a clamour for the striker to be given more minutes for the first team and now starts.

In February, FourFourTwo Magazine then named Gelhardt as the 33rd most exciting teenager in world football as part of a list topped by Borussia Dortmund’s England international teenager Jude Bellingham.

At just 18 years of age, Bellingham incredibly already has 12 senior caps to his name but Gelhardt’s youth international progress is impressive in its own right, the Leeds striker having netted for his country at under-16s, 17s, 18s and 20s level and making the under-21s squad for the first time last October.

The forward’s recent progress has been slightly held back by recent small injury niggles and a false positive Covid test but Gelhardt recently returned to full training and the teen is eyeing a strong end to the campaign.

Thereafter, the striker known affectionately as Joffy has a relaxed approach when it comes to his future ambitions and in any case his exceptional explosive talent will more than take care of those.

“I just take it as it comes,” said the teenage striker, asked about his long term goals and the obvious dream of playing for England.

“I don’t try and pressure myself too much and I just take it day by day and see how stuff goes.

"But I think every kid when they dream if they want to be a footballer they want to play for England, they want to represent their country so I think that’s a goal of everyone to be fair.”

Pausing to assess his journey so far as his 20th birthday looms next month, Gelhardt reasoned: “I think from when I joined Leeds I think my time has gone quite quick.

“It felt like a few weeks ago when I joined so that’s a positive that has gone quick.

“I have enjoyed all of my time and I’m coming up to 20 now. It’s gone quickly.

"Even from when I broke into Wigan’s team when I was like 17 it has just gone in a flash so I want to try and savour every moment.

“I have enjoyed every minute that I have been at Leeds and that was my goal, to play in the Premier League for them and that’s happened more this season.

"I have got a bit unfortunate with my injuries recently but that happens in football, you have just got to get over it and I have got to try and keep myself fresh for the next few games and the big run in.”

Gelhardt and Greenwood's Inbetweeners ribbing sums up pair dying to be Leeds United's next frontline
Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood are inseparable to the point Leeds United team-mates and club staff find it odd when they are seen apart yet it has all the hallmarks of a vital partnership for the Whites on the field

By Beren Cross Leeds United club writer 19:28, 16 APR 2022

Jay’s West Ham United trials and football friend may have bent the truth in The Inbetweeners, but the ribbing Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood get for their connection at the hip is built on rock-solid foundations. The Leeds United pair met on international duty with England several years ago and slowly watched their stories come together in a joint arrival at Elland Road in the same 2020 summer transfer window.

Barely four months separate their ages and 2021/22 seems to be the year they will both look back on as the campaign they properly broke into senior professional football. While Gelhardt has taken the bulk of the headlines with his goals, assists and match-saving cameos, Greenwood is slowly but surely coming onto the radar with an immense amount of faith from Jesse Marsch at his back.

Greenwood was central to United’s second and third goals at Watford last weekend with an impact which legitimately puts him in the conversation for match-changing turns down the home stretch. Those watching closely will have seen the affection they have for each other.

The first man onto the pitch after full-time to celebrate Gelhardt’s maiden goal at Stamford Bridge was Greenwood, while Gelhardt could not wipe the grin off his face as he raced out to be with his old pal last weekend following the final whistle. They are inseparable off the pitch too, much to the amusement of team-mates and club staff alike.

“We’ve got a really good relationship off the field,” said Gelhardt. “We’re always together and when we’re walking down people will say ‘ooo friends’ and take the mick out of us. We just get on well together and on the pitch, we’re always looking for each other and passing to each other and helping each other out and trying to score goals together, really.”

Stepping into a mainstream global competition like the Premier League can be an overawing experience for a young footballer, but it’s made all the more special by sharing the experience with one another. Gelhardt said: “To be exposed to [the] first team in the Premier League with someone you’ve known for years, me and Sam knew each other from England four years ago, we’ve been mates for a long time and then to play in the Premier League together or see each other doing well is an unbelievable feeling.”

As is so often the way in modern football, the youngsters cut their teeth in Leeds white with cup debuts. Greenwood even made his on a forgettable, disastrous day at Crawley Town in the FA Cup last season, while Gelhardt had to wait.

Anticipation was almost at fever pitch when the teenager eventually got on at Fulham in the EFL Cup last September, but the fireworks would not come until one month later, at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Any attempt to keep the lid on the hype was abandoned in a half-hour ripper from Gelhardt which culminated in an injury-time, match-saving penalty award. He’s not looked back.

Greenwood’s league debut came from the bench in December when the squad was at its most threadbare on the day Arsenal visited Elland Road. He’s had to be patient since then, but saw a breakthrough last weekend.

“I wouldn’t say I’m going ahead of him, it's just different times,” said Gelhardt. “I got my exposure a little bit earlier than him, but he said to me, the other day after the game, it was crazy.

“At Watford, he didn’t feel nervous coming on, but his debut, he was nervous against Arsenal and I said ‘every one gets easier’ and he was like ‘I felt that after the Watford game when I came on, I wasn’t even nervous, I was just excited.’ I was telling him every time you come on it gets a bit easier and just do what you do when you’re on the pitch, just play your own game, you’re there for a reason, do what you do and score.”

Injuries have proved frustrating for both of the forwards this season, but with health on their side now, and a Patrick Bamford-shaped hole persisting for a few more weeks yet, opportunities are there for this young pair of friends.

I Championship?

Klassespiller!

HENRY WINTER | JOE GELHARDT INTERVIEW
Joe Gelhardt: I lost 9kg in my first season at Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa. I had to change my habits
Moving to Leeds was an eye-opener for the 20-year-old who found out quickly what is needed to succeed at the top

When Joe Gelhardt was being pursued by clubs like Everton, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City, the then Wigan Athletic teenager went to a meeting with Leeds United’s charismatic director of football, Victor Orta. “He showed me a presentation about Leeds, the fans and the history,” Gelhardt recalls. “As soon as I walked out of the meeting, I said to my mum ‘this is the place for me’. I knew straight away.”

Two years on, Gelhardt has played 21 times for Leeds in the Premier League, is widely considered on a pathway to the England team and is even more in thrall to the Elland Road passion pit. On Tuesday he could be found standing on a makeshift pitch at Ebor Gardens, three miles from where Leeds host Chelsea on Sunday, playing football with fans alongside team-mate Tyler Adams.

Gelhardt was so involved in this Premier League Kicks community project laid on by Leeds United Foundation’s inspiring coaches for local youngsters that he even rushed back to make a goal-line clearance. Afterwards, the youngsters crowded around “Joffy”, a nickname taken from the King Jaffe Joffer character in the film Coming to America that his uncle, also Joe, was called because he used to watch it all the time. A family friend had a daughter in Gelhardt’s class, she started calling him Joffy and the name stuck. Leeds fans love Joffy. It’s the fearlessness and the street footballer in him that so appeals. He dribbles, creates and scores.

Surrounded by Leeds supporters, Gelhardt couldn’t stop smiling. “The video Victor showed me of the fans show how much Leeds means to the people,” the 20-year-old says. “It’s what I love. It was a no-brainer to come here. When I’ve been in the stand watching a game, the fans are scary loud but when I’m on the pitch, it feels even louder. It’s a cliché but they really are like a 12th man when we’re pushing for something. It lifts me 100 per cent. I don’t get tired as much, because I want to put in the work for the Leeds fans. They’re trying so hard to spur us on. I just want to give everything back for them. We were getting beat 7-0 by Man City last season and you could hear the Leeds fans more than City fans. That shows how special they are.

“Leeds represent passion, hard work and never giving up. They are the three things that stick out to me when I think about Leeds. Togetherness as well. If one person’s going through something (difficult) we’re all going through it. In performances on the pitch as players as we show that.’’

Gelhardt looks around the small pitch with the portable goals and high rises as a backdrop. It reminds him of his early years in Netherton, Liverpool. “I played on something like this growing up,” he continues. “I loved it. I played all the time. I didn’t know anything else, really. I’d go back there now if I could. When I do go back to my old street, there’s some grass and a few of the kids play there, my brother’s mates, so I play with them, not often though.” (His brother Daniel is in Wigan academy).

Gelhardt obliges with all the requests for selfies cheerily. “My mum would kill me if I wasn’t that way,’’ he adds. “She installed those values early. It’s the best way to be, just polite to everyone. You never know what anyone’s going through so make sure you’re nice to everyone on a day-to-day basis even if you’re in a bad mood. If you do start to get carried away people in Liverpool would bring you back down to earth quickly.”

He attended Chesterfield High School in Crosby, alma mater of James Vaughan (Everton) and Jack Robinson (Liverpool). “It’s always been associated with sport. They were helpful. I used to go on day release to Wigan so they were happy with me missing school but I’d have to catch up. I wasn’t treated any differently to any other kid just because I play football.”

He got to Anfield when he could. “I was a Liverpool fan. I went a few times when I was a kid, not that much because I used to play on Saturdays for Wigan and Sundays for Merseyside Boys. Fernando Torres was my favourite when he was at Liverpool. It was his hair — I was only young, and I wanted hair like Torres. He was a top player as well. Supporting Liverpool, he was the main man for the few seasons. When I started understanding football, Torres was the first person I looked at.

“But all through my life [Lionel] Messi has been my favourite. Messi’s just the best. What he does is ridiculous.” At 5ft 7in, Messi highlights that height isn’t everything. “It’s a myth,” the 5ft 9in Gelhardt says. “Messi’s the perfect example. You can think of loads of others like [Mo] Salah, Thiago [Alcântara]. They’re world class and they’re not tall.”

He developed his talent at Wigan where he was nicknamed “Wazza” after Wayne Rooney because of his background, strength and finishing prowess. “Wigan was great, friendly. Everyone was lovely at the club, the staff to the players. I can’t thank the Wigan coaches for what they did for me, the hours they put into training. They are top coaches.” He really got on with the manager Paul Cook. “He’s a Scouser as well. He was a good manager as well. I made my Championship debut [at 16] under him, so I’m thankful for him for that.”

He came on at half-time for the injured Josh Windass at Birmingham City on April 27, 2019. “It was scary at first.” He acquitted himself well. “My mum made the journey so I had to do well…”

Lynne Gelhardt features prominently in his story. “She’s the best, so supportive,” Gelhardt says. “From when I was a kid she came to every single game she could around the country. My dad’s a carpet F***er and my mum works in the same place, she does the office work. They’re both very hard-working. My dad doesn’t have a day off. My mum gets the weekend off. My dad works Saturday and Sunday as well. They made a lot of sacrifices for me. Whenever my birthday or Christmas came round and I’d ask for something they always made sure they had it. I know sometimes it wouldn’t have been easy for them.”

They constantly encouraged him, and his hard work underpinned his rise. It’s a message the Leeds coaches like 18-year-old Brooklyn Nixon impart to the youngsters kicking about around Gelhardt. “It’s massive for these kids for Joffy to be here because they see people like Joffy who have put craft and time into their skill, and their skill was football and it’s paid off for them, they’re playing in the Premier League,” Nixon says. “I tell that to all of these kids, ‘You put enough time in school, into anything, you can do whatever you want, the sky is the limit’.”

Such was Gelhardt’s application, and talent, that the FA called early. “I went to my first England camp with the Under-15s and I’ve been in the set-up since,” he recalls. He really announced himself with two goals and an assist in the Montaigu tournament in France in 2018, a competition for Under-16s graced by future stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappe. He’s risen up through age-groups, playing with plenty of prospects. “Loads! Tino Livramento, Fabio Carvalho (now Portugal Under-21s) and Harvey Elliott. He [Elliott] is sound. It’s good to see him doing so well.

“There’s a buzz around young English players. Everyone’s starting to notice now. The talent that’s coming through England is scary, the best in the world because of the great academies, coaches and facilities. It’s starting to show now with the youth teams. The Under-19s won the Euros in the summer.”

Many clubs pursued the young England prospect when Wigan fell into financial difficulties. “We took wage deferrals,” Gelhardt. “I was 17, so it didn’t bother me. Something happened with the owners but we weren’t told properly.”

After that successful meeting between Gelhardt and Orta, Leeds got the player for a bargain £1 million on August 10, 2020. On arrival at Thorp Arch, Gelhardt quickly realised the step up in skill and intensity, especially when joining in the first-team’s “murderball” session under Marcelo Bielsa. “I nearly threw up after my first one,” he recalls. “It was a big shock after Wigan. Sometimes we did pick up injuries it was that intense but fitness wise it was good.

“I lost 9 kilograms in my first season at Leeds. It was a big shock because I’d never really believed in nutrition. I just used to play football and enjoy it. Then I when joined Leeds in the Premier League it was a big step physically so I needed to get used to it. I had to change my habits.” Out went the fizzy drinks and in came the isotonics and shakes. “In Liverpool, when I’d get home I go out with my mates, I wouldn’t even be home for tea. So sometimes I’d get a crappy food which your body doesn’t need. When I joined Leeds, on my own, starting to cook for myself, I had the help of the Leeds nutritionist and the staff. I eat chicken, rice, pasta, noodles, mostly chicken because that’s protein, and then carbs and veg. My diet and body changed.” His running increased from an average 9km in games to 10.5km.

He’s had great role models like Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford. “When I joined, Kalvin sent me a message on Instagram welcoming me. I appreciated Kalvin for that. Kalvin was a lovely, warm lad. He deserved his opportunity to go to one of the best teams in the world, if not the best (Manchester City). I’m made up for him. Pat’s like my mentor. If he was injured, especially at the end of last season, and I’d played, Pat would always send me videos on where I could do better. That sums up the type of guy he is, just willing to help others.”

Gelhardt is happy playing at 9 or 10. “Either, it doesn’t bother me. I can do a job in both. Naturally I’ve come towards the ball, but I don’t mind scrapping and fighting with the centre half.”

Bielsa improved him further. “He’s a genius,” Gelhardt enthuses. “He unlocks a side to players you don’t know you have. He was so complex, sometimes I didn’t understand what he’s talking about until I went on the pitch and it works. ‘Wow! That was what he was talking about.’ It was patterns of play and movement. For example, with me, I was a player who just came to feet all the time. He started to tell me to run in behind, and I started to score a few goals, for the Under-23s.” And then the first team.

Bielsa’s departure on February 27 was seismic. “It was emotional,’’ Gelhardt says. “He came in and did a speech. Everyone knows what he did to the club. Everyone involved in Leeds is very thankful for that. He was a great manager. What he’s done for Leeds is so impressive.”

Bielsa was succeeded by Jesse Marsch. “He’s different,” Gelhardt says. “But the same time intensity-wise in training he’s always pushing us, always want the best from us – and the best for us. Tyler said that when you think you’ve done something well, he [Marsch] will say you could have done it better. That makes me want to be better at it. It makes you better. It makes you push every day. He’s very good tactically as well. He took a hard job last season trying to save us from relegation. He completed the job.”

Gelhardt scored once for Bielsa. “I scored my first Premier League goal against Chelsea away which was unbelievable. The Norwich goal (a late winner under Marsch) topped that because of the situation we were in (fighting relegation).” Both goals were huge, and even though Leeds lost 3-2 to Chelsea, the game was a reminder of an old rivalry. “I didn’t know about the history in the 1970s but I’ve been told by a few of the people at Leeds that there is a big rivalry, so it was good to score.

“I’ve been told of how many fans were there back then, even then when Leeds were down the ladder. Leeds post a lot about the olden days. It doesn’t surprise me really because you see how big they are as a club.” That was also reflected in the intense grief at the sad passing of Peter Lorimer on March 20, 2021. “That showed what type of club we are, the type of support, we are all together. At those sad occasions everyone stands together. That’s the club.”

That unity was seen at Ebor Gardens. After the session, Gelhardt and Adams presented Nixon with a Premier League “community captain” armband as part of the league’s 30th anniversary and mark the inspiring work the coach has done with the club’s Kicks campaign, helping 1,000 local participants from eight to 18. “It’s good for the kids to be getting an opportunity to get involved in activities that will keep them off the streets,” Gelhardt adds. “This is perfect. It’s what kids need. It leads them in the right direction.” And they all want to follow Gelhardt.
