Honours even in bore draw
Luton picked up their first away point of the season at the fifth attempt at Huish Park as they played out a goalless draw at Yeovil.
They owed much to their goalkeeper Ben Alnwick, who made two great saves in the closing stages as Yeovil took control.
A dull first-half failed to produce a shot on goal from either side with Yeovil's injury-ravaged team again struggling to reproduce the form that took them to the play-offs last season.
Luton were also struggling with top scorer Paul Furlong suspended and Yeovil burst into life late in the game with Anthony Barry having a 25-yarder well saved by Alnwick and the keeper then went full length to turn Lee Peltier's shot around a post.
The Hatters came close six minutes from time when David Edwards blazed his shot over from a good position.

Yeovil are warned after FA charge
Yeovil Town have been warned as to their future conduct by the Football Association, following a League One match against Tranmere last month.
The game, on 1 September, finished in a 1-1 draw after Rovers winger Steve Davies scored a last-minute equaliser.
The Glovers had admitted a breach of FA rule E20(a) - failing to ensure their players and/or officials conducted themselves in an orderly fashion.
But despite the warning, the Somerset club have avoided a fine.

SLADE WARNS YEOVIL OF THOMPSON DANGER
Yeovil Town boss Russell Slade believes his side will face the best set-piece taker in League One at Leeds United tomorrow.
The Glovers chief picked out the left foot of former Bolton, Aston Villa and Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson, now 33, as Leeds' main threat.
"With the amount of late goals they have scored this season, they have proved they just keep going at you and you can't switch off," said Slade. "In Thompson they have got someone who is not particularly mobile but has to have, in my opinion, the best delivery in the league.
"So if there is a free-kick or a corner in the last minutes then it could be fatal."
Yeovil's injury list has worsened ahead of the trip to Elland Road.
Striker Darryl Knights is out with a shoulder injury suffered in the 11-0 Somerset Cup thrashing of Backwell United on Wednesday night, while right-back Lee Peltier was on crutches yesterday to take the weight off an ankle problem.
Peltier may still be fit for tomorrow's game but Slade can name eight definite absentees - Knights, Marc Bircham, Terry Skiverton, Justin Cochrane, Steve Mildenhall, Gary Dempsey, Marvin Williams, who has just had ankle surgery, and Lee Morris, who limped out of training yesterday.
Forwards Jerahl Hughes and Wilfried Domoraud are both slight doubts, so defender Curtis Ujah could be on the bench.
Former Grimsby striker Michael Reddy and midfielder Dempsey trained yesterday and may play for the reserves when Bristol City visit Huish Park on Wednesday.
On Reddy, Slade said: "It was his first day of training in a year and we will have to see how that settles now.
"He will need a good few weeks of that but I am hoping while he does that we can get him some football in the reserves."

(...) Flo is one of three players unavailable for tomorrow's League One clash with Yeovil Town at Elland Road.
Leon Constantine and Shaun Derry are long-term absentees, but Wise has not been able to call on either players this season and he will pick from a familiar squad this weekend.
Kandol and Beckford are returning from one-match bans, meaning De Vries and Andrews are likely to drop out of United's starting line-up after their debuts at Oldham on Tuesday, but Wise's two changes up front may be the full extent of his alterations.
Wise said: "I think you'll find that the team might change in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy but in the league you maybe change one, or two max."
United (from): Ankergren, Richardson, Heath, Marques, Huntington, Hughes, Clapham, Parker, Prutton, Thompson, Douglas, Carole, Westlake, Howson, Weston, Beckford, Kandol, De Vries, Andrews, Ameobi, Lucas, Martin.

Peltier receives Slade praise
Yeovil manager Russell Slade has praised on-loan Liverpool youngster Lee Peltier ahead of the League One trip to Leeds.
The Glovers' injury crisis has meant Slade switching Peltier from his regular central midfield role to right back.
But the Yeovil boss insists he was more than adequate in his new position.
"Lee Peltier was magnificent (in the 0-0 draw with Luton)," he said. "It was the first time he has played at full back for us and he's only 20, but he was outstanding.
"He was impressive going forward and solid in defence

Best is yet to come, insists Leeds boss
DENNIS WISE believes Leeds United have faced most of League One's best sides already this season but insists: I still want more.

The Elland Road club have enjoyed a scintillating start to the season with their only dropped points on the field in the opening nine games having come courtesy of a last-minute equaliser at Gillingham when down to nine men.
So impressive has been United's form that Wise was yesterday named the division's manager of the month for a second time this term.
The United manager has been pleased with his side's efforts, especially considering the calibre of opposition with the likes of Nottingham Forest, Tranmere, Luton, Hartlepool, Bristol Rovers and Southend already having been beaten.
However, he said: "So far, we have done okay but we need more. We do not settle for o'kay'. We need to catch the next group.
"I think we have seen the best teams so far. I am not knocking the others, I don't want a situation where they think 'sod it, let's go to Leeds and give it to them'. I am sure they will be thinking that anyway.
"But if I am being totally honest, of the teams we have played so far then six will be very close to the play-offs and maybe even winning the league.
"No disrespect to Gillingham, but apart from them every other team we have played has been tough. It makes our run encouraging."
Despite that, Wise added: "I would like to think we can offer a lot more.
"I expect more. What we have done at this present time is deal with everything. But I want more and so does Gus (Poyet, assistant) and the players."
United moved up to 14th in midweek courtesy of a 1-0 win at Oldham Athletic to sit four points off the play-offs and nine behind surprise leaders Leyton Orient.
It is an amazing achievement to be so high in the table just nine games into a season that started with the club being rock bottom on minus 15 points courtesy of the Football League.
Leeds chairman Ken Bates still hopes to overturn the penalty despite the Football Association deciding last week not to intervene, but Wise remains philosophical.
He said: "You always have a little bit of hope about getting it back. But that is not down to me. It is down to the authorities, Batesy and the rest.
"They will keep on trying but we are trying to get up the league. If we don't get it, we don't."
The points deduction may have hit United hard in terms of their league position this autumn but there is little doubt it had a galvanising effect on fans, players and management alike with a collective desire to stick two fingers up at the League burning bright at Elland Road.
Wise added: "It has probably helped us. It helped the fans realise that these players and the manager could have said 'sod you lot, we're going'.
"That was never going to happen in a million years but I think the fans understand that now. Before, they weren't quite sure.
"They know this group want to achieve something for the club because when the club was on the floor, who stuck around?"
Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol are back in the squad to face Yeovil Town tomorrow after serving one-game bans following their red cards at Gillingham.
Wise was also sent to the stand at the Priestfield Stadium for alleged use of abusive language towards referee Danny McDermid.
The Leeds manager was charged over the incident earlier this week and does not seem to be confident about the outcome after twice going before the FA last season over bust-ups against Southend and West Brom.
He quipped: "It was quite funny at the last one because I won and still got fined. Work that one out.
"All I did was write the cheque and send it to them. I don't know whether it is worth turning up."

Wise: We've played the best so now for the rest

Dennis Wise will launch Leeds United into tomorrow's clash with Yeovil Town believing his players have already encountered the cream of League One's crop.
United are approaching the 10-game mark this weekend after two dramatic months, and Wise today admitted his side have established themselves as one of League One's leading sides after overcoming some of the strongest opposition the division has to offer.
Tuesday night's win at Oldham Athletic – secured by a 95th-minute goal from Ian Westlake – claimed the scalp of another major promotion contender, and tomorrow's meeting with Yeovil at Elland Road will bring United together with a side who reached the play-off final last season.
Yeovil are seventh in the table and have constructed a consistent away record during the early weeks of the season, but Wise collected League One's manager of the month award for September yesterday after watching his side extend their unbeaten record to nine games.
A ninth victory this weekend could leave Leeds a point short of a place in the top six, and Wise will send his players out with the reassuring insistence that they are capable of outclassing any team in the league.
United's boss said: "I think we've seen the best teams in there so far – the teams that we've played against.
"That's not knocking the others, and I don't want to do that because they'll start thinking 'let's give it to Leeds'. I'm sure they're thinking that anyway.
"But if I'm being totally honest, of the teams so far six or seven of them are going to be very close to the play-offs – and maybe winning the league as well.
"We knew it was going to be a tough start and we've played some difficult teams, but we've dealt with them. But football does kick you in the goolies, and last Saturday (at Gillingham) gave us a little reminder of what can happen.
"So far we've done okay, but we need more because we don't want to settle for okay."
United's 1-1 draw at Gillingham last weekend cost the club the only 100 per cent league record in the country, but Wise's players responded immediately with their priceless win at Oldham.
The victory was achieved without strikers Tresor Kandol and Jermaine Beckford, inset, but both players will return from one-match bans tomorrow and are likely to step straight into Wise's starting line-up.

Peter Lorimer: Time to send a chilling message to all our rivals

THE Coca-Cola League One table is taking on an increasingly healthy look for Leeds United with each passing game and the next few weeks are all about targets.
Eight wins and a draw from nine games is a stunning start by any measure and it has enabled Leeds to make light of that swingeing 15-point Football League penalty.
The first target – that of getting into the plus points – has been readily achieved to the extent that Leeds now sit just four points away from the play-off places, six points from automatic promotion and nine points from the top.
Incredible.
Only an injury-time equaliser prevented the collection of maximum points on the road at Gillingham and Oldham and we now have the mouth-watering prospect of back-to-back home games against two sides above us in the league.
Yeovil, in seventh, and table-topping Leyton Orient provide the opposition and the target now is to both stop their ready collection of points and make inroads into those play-off places.
That will be a test. Yeovil made the play-offs last season with an eye-catching brand of football and are very handy on the road, while Orient have proved the surprise package of the third tier and are scoring plenty of goals.
To beat these two, then, would send out a chilling message to the rest of a league which must already be dreading Leeds being their next opponents.
The appeal of playing for Leeds was amply demonstrated earlier this week when two Coca-Cola Championship strikers took no persuading at all to join on Monday and go straight into the team on Tuesday.
It was a big ask for Wayne Andrews and Mark De Vries to make an instant impact as a new strikeforce at Oldham but I thought both did well and will certainly offer Dennis Wise plenty of options up front in their loan spells.
After the debacle at Gillingham in which both strikers were red-carded you wonder now what Dennis must be thinking about tomorrow's line-up.
Does he bring Tresor Kandol and Jermaine Beckford straight back in or does he teach one or both of them a lesson about self-discipline by leaving them out?
You never know with Dennis!
One thing's for sure – we'll find it very difficult to win games with nine men in the side and that cannot happen again.
I was a bit disappointed with the Oldham game as a spectacle but there are two points I would like to make.
First, the outstanding form of Rui Marques, a tower of strength at the back and somebody who is never afraid to throw his body on the line in the Leeds cause.
And secondly, the way Leeds keep going right to the very last whistle is a tribute to their appetite for battle and their tenacity.

LEEDS v YEOVIL

The Leeds' bandwagon continues to roll forward and Dennis Wise has landed his second consecutive manager of the month award.
The Elland Road club began the month with back-to-back home wins over Luton Town, Hartlepool United and Bristol Rovers were all beaten to leave Leeds with a record of seven straight wins this term.
A draw at Gillingham to finish off the month was seen as an acid test as both of their strike force – Tresor Kandol and Jermaine Beckford – were sent off. Nevertheless, they started October in the same vein and a last minute goal at Oldham gave them a 1-0 victory and lifted them to within four points of the play-offs.
When you consider they started the campaign with a 15-point deduction that is some achievement just ten games into the campaign. Assistant manager Gus Poyet was delighted with the team's response against Oldham.
Poyet said: "It wasn't the best game, but definitely it was the best time to score. It was a terrific finish for the winner, but we defended well throughout and worked very hard. That's the third time we have snatched a win right at the death and to finish strongly like that says a lot about the players' fitness. We all work together and everyone is buzzing, let's hope it stays like this all season."
Yeovil boss Russell Slade has called on supporters to be patient after the Glovers drew 0-0 with Luton last week and slipped out of the play-off zone.

VERDICT: Despite suspensions the Leeds promotion juggernaut continues to power on and they will record a one-goal win.

Leeds v Yeovil
(Home 4/7 Draw 12/5 Away 9/2)

Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol return from suspension and are set to go straight into the Leeds starting line-up. Ian Westlake could also get the nod after volleying an injury-time winner at Oldham.
Injury-hit Yeovil could still be without skipper Terry Skiverton, who is suffering with a groin problem. Gary Dempsey, Justin Cochrane, Steve Mildenhall, Marvin Williams and Lee Morris are also out.

Ankergrenn.
Frazer,Rui,Huntington,Hughes

Carole, Prutton,Douglas, Da Costa

Kandol, Beckford

Subs:Martin,clapham,Heath,Thompson og De vries.

Litt synd for unggutta, spes Howson..men hadde han vært god nok så hadde nok spilt.

"Brave as a lion"!
Litt heldig på slutten, men vi bokfører ein ny trepoenger.

Faen, det er herlig å vere Leeds om dagen!

Litt off-topic, men...

Jeg begynner nesten å like fyren..

LEEDS ON THE MARK AGAIN
On-loan striker Mark De Vries came off the bench to head his first goal for Leeds with a minute to spare to seal a 1-0 victory over Yeovil.
De Vries rose at the far post to head Jonathan Douglas' cross into the net as Leeds made it nine wins out of 10.
Yeovil, who had won three of their four previous away matches, were the better side in the first half, Leeds goalkeeper Casper Ankergren having to make excellent saves to deny Anthony Barry and Paul Warne.
Leeds struggled to pick their way through their opponents' 4-1-4-1 formation and strikers Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol, who returned from a one-match suspension, were starved of sufficient opportunities to test Yeovil's French 'keeper Romain Larrieu.
Seb Carole wasted the home side's best first-half chance when he blazed over the crossbar after clever approach play from Douglas and Rui Marques.
Leeds had much more possession in the second half but claims for a 67th-minute penalty were turned down when a defender appeared to handle after a good move by Frazer Richardson, Kandol and Andrew Hughes. Marcus Stewart wasted a clear-cut chance by shooting wide for Yeovil.

Sub De Vries is Leeds United's hero
Leeds United 1 Yeovil Town 0

Carlsberg don't do home debuts, but if they did they would probably involve Mark De Vries.
The striker's first appearance for Hearts at Tynecastle five years ago brought four goals against Hibernian in a rout of an Edinburgh derby, and his maiden game at Elland Road yesterday was made to match.
The Dutchman ended his brief appearance from the substitutes' bench by heading home the only goal of an unflattering clash with Yeovil Town, and provided the type of unlikely finish which has become almost a weekly occurrence with Leeds.
De Vries angled his finish beyond goalkeeper Romain Larrieu with his only chance in the 89th minute, bringing United three points at the expense of their distraught visitors.
Yeovil had controlled the first half and withstood heavy pressure to create the better opportunities during the second, but there is something inevitable about United's results.
On eight occasions this season Wise's players have produced a goal in the final five minutes, a tendency which is proving incredibly valuable.
On De Vries' first outing at Oldham on Tuesday, it took a strike from Ian Westlake four-and-a-half minutes into injury time to secure a 1-0 win from a game which United had not even shaded.
De Vries' first goal for Leeds came slightly earlier against Yeovil, but the effect was identical. Dramatic would be the appropriate superlative, if only results like yesterday's were anything out of the ordinary for Leeds.
Wise is of the opinion that United have already met – and beaten – the most effective teams in League One, but other clubs would beg to differ. Yeovil are one of those, and Russell Slade made the point of stressing that his squad would not willingly play the part of lambs to the slaughter.
Last season's beaten play-off finalists have been quietly effective this season, scoring few goals and conceding fewer, and their goal difference was responsible for keeping them beneath the play-off places before kick-off at Elland Road.
As if to prove the seriousness of their intent, Yeovil stifled Leeds with a measured performance of quiet ambition, and created three chances which should have left De Vries in no position to steal victory.
Two of those opportunities came before half-time, and though United's results have kept them beyond criticism, their contribution before the interval was as ineffective as anything Wise has witnessed from his players this season.
As with their victory at Oldham, a compact midfield left no space for Leeds to exploit, and Yeovil were schooled in the art of mastering direct tactics.
It seemed as if Slade had studied Tuesday night's fixture at Boundary Park closely, and United's lack of panache allowed their visitors to develop a sense of confidence.
Yeovil do not possess the players needed to tear League One to shreds, and their transfers dealings during the summer were not exactly the programme of strengthening that Slade might have wished for after their appearance in the play-off final.
But his squad is capable, and contains a pleasant mixture of young legs and experienced heads. It was one of each who might have given Yeovil the lead before the interval.
The better opportunity feel to Anthony Barry, a 21-year-old Liverpudlian who thrived on his role in the centre of a cramped midfield.
Barry was left completely unmarked when a counter-attack sucked Wise's defence towards the right-hand side of the Elland Road pitch, and a crossfield pass from Paul Warne slid nicely into his team-mate's path.
Barry took a gentle touch and ran clear in United's box, but Casper Ankergren moved forward quickly to meet the threat and threw his body behind a fierce shot. The chance was Barry's to miss as much as Ankergren's to save, but the Dane's reactions were outstanding.
They were examined again seven minutes before half-time, and passed another difficult test.
Warne benefited from a ricochet on the edge of United's area and drilled a sharp volley towards the left-hand corner, but the keeper's save at full-stretch kept the ball out.
A shot from Sebastien Carole, after interplay between the Frenchman, Jonathan Douglas and Manuel Rui Marques, was as much as United had to show for their effort in the first half, although the build-up was as considered as any of Yeovil's attacks.
Carole's effort rose high over the bar, and a strike from Jamie Clapham which Terrell Forbes blocked long before it reached goalkeeper Romain Larrieu was their only other memorable threat. Wise's comments at half-time would have been fascinating to hear.
United's boss is loathe to criticise his players unnecessarily, but United were uninspired at Oldham and he would not wish to see ill-deserved victories become more regular than they have to be. Even with Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol back in harness after one-match bans, Leeds were short of inspiration in and around Yeovil's box.
But the start of the start of the second half brought a surge of energy from Wise's players, and an injection of pace into a game which had otherwise had none. Beckford tested Larrieu's handing with a low shot from 20 yards three minutes after the break, and Clapham's volley from a tight angle beat Larrieu and the post.
But Yeovil's threat was apparent in flashes, and United's gift of space to Warne in the 57th minute saw the former Rotherham midfielder skim the ball dangerously close to Ankergren's crossbar.
The game was going nowhere at speed, although Marcus Stewart will carry the burden for Yeovil's failure to inflict United's first defeat after wasting the game's finest chance 17 minutes from time. Matt Heath's poor control inside his own box presented the ball to Kevin Betsy, but his pass across the face of Ankergren's goal was sliced wide by a criminally casual finish from Stewart.
The cost of his finish came to bear two minutes from time. Wise had gambled by introducing De Vries and Tore Andre Flo for two midfielders, and when Jonathan Douglas' cross from the right wing carried to the far post, De Vries guided a header back over Larrieu and into the far corner of the net.
Not a single soul in Elland Road was remotely surprised.

Report: Leeds 1 Yeovil 0

FORTUNE favoured the brave yet again at Elland Road when Leeds United struck with another late late goal.
Mark De Vries, the on-loan striker from Leicester City, found the net in the 89th minute to give Leeds maximum points in another dramatic finish, maintaining their record of being the only unbeaten side in the entire Football League.
Yeovil have more than the obvious to feel bad about on their long journey home having had the balance of play and opportunity.
Anthony Barry was the man closed to the mark in the first half, only for Casper Ankergren to keep him at bay with a proficient save.
And former Huddersfield player Marcus Stewart sliced agonisingly wide of the mark with juts 14 minutes to go.
Inevitably though, Dennis Wise showed why he was named manager of the month for League One for a second month running.
He upped the number of forwards on the pitch to four by the final whistle, and De Vries justified the bold move by heading home a left-wing cross by Jonathan Douglas from six yards out in the 89th minute.
The win lifts United into the top half of the League One table for the first time, their 15-pount penalty at the start of the season holding them back from a huge lead.

Disagree about Douglas. He does work hard but there's never an end product. There were several occasions where Leeds looked like they might have broken out of defence, usually Heath would give it to Douglas and he'd either run into a Yeovil player or pass back to defence... There's no skill or imagination there, and he's painfully slow. Carole/Prutton/Westlake/Hughes across the middle for me.

Douglas is AWFUL. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get rid. Cant tackle, cant pass, no pace, all he can do is sweat quite alot. Not good enough. Hughes and Prutton were excellent up to their substitution. Kandol wasnt great, Beckford tried but was too well marked. Heath was below par,Rui was excellent. Casper had a few tricky ones first half, dealt with them easily. Got some good catches from corners/crosses aswell. Ref played well for Yeovil (was wearing the same shirt aswell). Westlake looked good, didnt really see enough of him though. Lucky to win...

Mark De Vries keeps Dennis Wise revival on the march
Leeds 1 Yeovil 0

UNBELIEVABLE. Seven times in their nine previous games, Leeds United had scored in the last five minutes to win, often after being comprehensively outplayed, and they did it again yesterday. Yeovil, make no mistake, were much the better team here, but as so often this season, Leeds hung on, rode their luck and with seconds remaining, came up with a winner.
The first competitive meeting between these two clubs began, as more than one of the games at Elland Road have this season, with the away team looking the stronger. In Yeovil’s case this was not entirely surprising, Russell Slade’s team having won three of their past four games on the road, but the extent to which they controlled the early exchanges was startling. It was 23 minutes before United won a corner, let alone fashioned a worthwhile attempt on goal, by which time Yeovil should have been ahead. Matt Rose scuffed a shot during a penalty area scramble and when United failed to pick up the run of Anthony Barry, breaking from midfield in the 19th minute, the young midfielder saw his 20-yard effort saved by the diving goalkeeper Casper Ankergren.
Leeds’s response could hardly be described as concerted, but there was one moment of good football, Seb Carole exchanging passes with Rui Marques on the edge of the Yeovil penalty area and driving a shot a couple of feet over the bar. It was to be the only time they made Yeovil goalkeeper Romain Larrieu remotely anxious. About the only positive for Leeds was the fact they were still level, and judging by the way they improved at the start of the second period, manager Dennis Wise had let his players know his disappointment in his own inimitable style. Jermaine Beckford, who had barely been in the game up to this point, forced Larrieu to make his first save of the match in the 48th minute, hitting his shot well enough but straight at the Frenchman.
It was the encouragement another big crowd needed to lift the volume to a level that some of the Yeovil players may not have experienced previously, but for all Leeds’s new positive intent, the visitors continued to play the more accomplished football. One neat passing move ended with Marcus Stewart’s flick giving Paul Warne space on the edge of the United area, but his right-footed shot sacrificed accuracy for power, fizzing well over the angle of post and bar.
If that was disappointing for Yeovil’s increasingly vocal fans, it was nothing to how they must have felt soon afterwards when Stewart somehow fired Kevin Betsy’s cross wide of the target from no more than eight yards out.
Wise sent on Tore Andre Flo and Mark De Vries, effectively going four up front, and Tresor Kandol’s late header brought a decent save from Larrieu, but it was De Vries who came up trumps, heading Jonathan Douglas’s cross from the left beyond the aghast goalkeeper and inside his far post.

Star man: Terrell Forbes (Yeovil)

Player ratings. Leeds: Ankergren 7, Richardson 6, Rui Marques 7, Heath 6, Clapham 6, Prutton 5 (De Vries 76min), Douglas 5, Hughes 5 (Westlake 84min), Carole 6 (Flo 76min), Beckford 5, Kandol 5

Leeds United 1 Yeovil Town 0: De Vries makes mark in another Leeds late show

The League One table in the Leeds programme shows how it would look had the fallen giants of Elland Road not been docked 15 points, under which reckoning Dennis Wise's team would have 28 points and lead by nine after stretching their unbeaten start to 10 games here yesterday.
In reality, they looked anything but runaway leaders against a Yeovil side who will believe they should have won. Yet out of their troubles Leeds have acquired the enviable knack of playing moderately yet stealing victory at the death and the habit was maintained when substitute Mark de Vries headed home Jonathan Douglas' cross after 89 minutes.
The on-loan Leicester striker's first goal for Leeds was the eighth Wise's team have scored inside the last five minutes so far this season, transforming draws into wins in five games.
The Leeds team had been as expected with Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol asked to resume their 11-goal partnership. Both were forced to sit out the midweek trip to Oldham following red cards at Gillingham last weekend and while their replacements, de Vries and fellow loan star Wayne Andrews, earned compliments from manager Wise for their contribution to a 1-0 win at Boundary Park, neither kept his place.
The pattern of the football, however, was not quite as the home crowd probably envisaged as their team sought to extend their unbeaten start to the League One season. Yeovil deployed only Lloyd Owusu in a purely attacking function and Leeds were hard-pressed to find working space in midfield.
Moreover, they faced opponents with the pace on the flanks in Kevin Betsy and Paul Warne to break at speed and, in 21-year-old Anthony Barry, a player capable of hitting accurate passes from central midfield.
Indeed, though Leeds, after a quiet opening period, began to impose themselves more by half-time it was only through two reactive saves from goalkeeper Casper Ankergren that they kept the scores level. The Dane pulled off a brilliant stop after Warne's low cross from the left had picked out Barry and later stretched himself to his left to deny Warne with a fingertip save. Marcus Stewart also missed a simple chance.
By contrast, Yeovil's Romain Larrieu was well protected as captain Terrell Forbes organised a tight rearguard, the best chance created by Leeds ending with Seb Carole sidefooting tamely over the top after Douglas had combined to good effect with centre back Rui Marques.
The response by Wise was to send on two more strikers in De Vries and Tore Andre Flo and hope that Leeds' predilection for last-gasp winning goals continued. And again he got lucky.

Leeds United keep on rising
Leeds United (0) 1 Yeovil (0) 0

According to Ken Bates, the latest patriarch of Leeds United, the Bentleys, Mercedes and Ferraris will be returning to the club's training ground if the players continue their rate of progress.

On the evidence of their erratic, often brainless offering for much of this match, the rusty old bangers will be chugging along to Thorp Arch for the foreseeable future.
But then one regime after another at Elland Road has lived in a self-styled dreamland and the way their fortunes are shaping this season they should achieve the reality of promotion to the Championship.
Yet another late goal, this time from substitute Mark de Vries, plundered all three points when they might have been left with none. Eight times they have scored in the last five minutes of matches to sustain their extraordinary rise from minus 15 points to within sight of the play-off places.
If Leeds are promoted, they will surely have to rebuild the team to make a fist of it in the Championship and many of these players will be parking their cars elsewhere.
They were outplayed in the first half, when Yeovil squandered a succession of chances, and even in the second, as they tilted the balance of the contest through sheer desire rather than subtlety, they ought to have conceded a goal to the normally reliable Marcus Stewart.
Leeds' afternoon served to encapsulate the volatile life and times of their manager, Dennis Wise. These past few days alone, he has received an FA charge and a manager of the month award. Yesterday he toed the touchline anxiously, occasionally ranting at one of his players, or an official, or just someone to let off steam. Far from dreaming, he maintains, he sees Leeds' challenge for what it is. "I always wait for the moment when it goes bad," he said. "My first aim is to get us safe. You're always going to get a sticky spell.
"Then we've got to catch the next group. I won't even think or talk about anything more than that. We didn't play at all well in the first half but in the second it was a different game. I told the players at half-time we had to be better and I'd make changes. I did, I brought on two more strikers.
"I do like a gamble. I try to win and put pressure on them. Why not? We win late because we keep going and the players believe they can win. Why not have a go?"
Leeds did have a go in that second half yet should have gone behind when Kevin Betsy squared the ball across the face of goal and Stewart inexplicably shot wide.
Leeds made the most of their luck and eventually forced the winner with their muscular bombardment. Jonathan Douglas delivered the crucial cross in the 89th minute and De Vries, at the far post, looped his header over Romain Larrieu.

Wise glad De Vries got his reward
Dennis Wise praised match-winner Mark De Vries' attitude after Yeovil came within minutes of ending Leeds' unblemished Elland Road record.
Leeds have won all their home games this season but were given the fright of their lives before De Vries left the bench 14 minutes from the end and headed the only goal in the 89th minute. It was his first goal for the club after joining on loan from Leicester and making his debut at Oldham in midweek.
Wise, who brought back strikers Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol after suspension, leaving De Vries to be satisfied with substitute duty, said: "There were no complaints from Mark at all.
"He understood that the two strikers had to come back and I liked his attitude. Good luck to him for getting the winner.
"Yeovil set their stall out by packing the midfield and we didn't play at all well in the first half, but it was a different game in the second half - one way traffic."

Leeds Utd 1 Yeovil Town 0

Daylight robbery was order of the day at Elland Road today, as United's late steal at Boundary Park was more like petty pilfering, compared to the armed robbery committed over luckless Yeovil, who revelled in their first ever visit to Elland Road. United welcomed back Beckford and Kandol after suspension in place of Andrews and De Vries, and Clapham returned with Thompson again injured.

The Leeds United marketing department, in their wisdom, have been selling "Where's Yeovil ? " t-shirts. As well as being disrespectful, this is just the sort of patronising antic you would expect from Premiership clubs, and those donning those shirts could so easily have gone home with eggs on their faces had the away team finished the chances they created. United supporters have been worried that with such a successful start to the season, there could be the possibility of complacency setting in, with the belief that all we have to do to win is turn up.

United started today's game in such a mood, the visitors were totally not troubled by the big crowd and atmosphere and started the better of the two teams. Yeovil have won three out of four on the road so far this season, and with pacy players all over the pitch, and the ability to break quickly, it's not hard to see why. United's only move of note in a wretched first half performance, saw a well worked corner end up with Carole blazing over. The visitors had the best two chances, as the impressive Anthony Barry was denied superbly by a wonderful save from Ankergren on twenty minutes, and five minutes before half-time he turned Paul Warne's well hit shot round the post. United strikers looked strangely lethargic, and Beckford in particular, spat the dummy out more than once, as he and Kandol seemed to be having a competition with opposing centre-forward Owusu, as to who could win the most free-kicks.

Half-time came as something of a relief, after what was surely United's poorest forty-five minutes of the season so far. It has to be said however, that the players weren't helped by the referee Mr Taylor who blew his whistle at every opportunity, and was determined never to let the game flow. United's midfield has been the weakest link all season, never was this more evident today where creativity amounted to virtually nil, and many of the fifty-fifty balls, so often won this season, were lost. United's most potent creator of the afternoon was right back Fraser Richardson who made several surging runs, that caused the Glovers problems all day, but his runs generally lacked a real telling cross.

United had two early attempts from distance just after the break, as Beckford was denied by the visitors keeper Larrieu, and Clapham's speculative drive went just wide, but Yeovil's defence were having a much more comfortable ride than expected, and their breaks were also causing occasional headaches for United's back four. On seventy minutes, Heath was dispossessed on the edge of the area, and as the ball was crossed across the goal Ankergren was beaten, and coming in at the back post for a tap-in was none other than the prolific Marcus Stewart, scorer of over 250 goals, who inexplicably poked the ball wide, much to the amazement of the onlooking Kopites.

Manager Wise's response, with the midfield being outplayed was to take our two must creative midfield players off, and bring on two more giant centre-forwards in Flo and De Vries. The midfield was effectively dispensed with as Wise went back to his Wimbledon roots to go route one for the final twenty minutes. Whilst not the prettiest way to play football United were more effective. The centre-half pairing for the visitors looked less comfortable, Kandol was denied with a good header, and a succession of corners were dealt with, but not without the odd scare. But as the clock counted down it looked like it just wasn't going to happen, Tuesday's hero Ian Westlake entered the fray and won a free kick down the left hand side then ironically with Kandol off the pitch receiving treatment Douglas's lofted free kick found De Vries at an angle, who headed over everybody, as the ball looped dispairingly for the visitors, into the net.

There was still time for the visitors to mount a couple more attacks in search of an equaliser, and Owusu's late header glided just wide of Ankergren's left hand post, as 27,000 United fanatics breathed a collective sigh of relief. It hadn't been pretty, the visitors had the better chances, but failed to take them. United's "never say die" attitude and their strength at the death in games was again the key as it became nine wins in ten, and into the dizzy heights of the top half of the table.

Woodini Ratings;

Ankergren - two excellent saves, the first a reaction save was as good as a goal 7.5
Richardson - surging runs a threat 7
Clapham - pulled around a bit at times 6
Heath - below par 5.5
Rui Marques - tested at times today, but solid 6.5
Carole - off day 5.5
Prutton - below par 5.5
Hughes - grafted hard 6
Douglas - worked hard as ever, distribution awful as ever 5.5
Beckford - spoilt brat at times 6
Kandol - more like last season's version 5.5
Subs;

De Vries - vital header, the hero 7
Flo - off the pace 6
Westlake - mini cameo again
Referee; Mr. A. Taylor - a complete pain in the arse, must have got a new whistle, down the middle though.

Crowd; 27,800+ Another good crowd, about a thousand travelling fans from Somerset who were probably enjoying their trip to Yorkshire until 4.45pm.

JONES: IT FEELS LIKE WE'VE BEEN MUGGED

Yeovil Town defender Nathan Jones said he felt like he had been mugged by Leeds after this game and it is hard to disagree.
The Yorkshire side's ability to score late goals should come as no surprise to anyone - but that knowledge doesn't make it any easier to take.
Football can be a cruel game and if ever evidence was needed, here it was. Mark De Vries' 89th-minute header did for a Yeovil team who deserved to puncture Leeds' 100 per cent home record.
Maybe the Glovers only had themselves to blame, though. They created the better chances - at least four good ones - and after Marcus Stewart put a golden opportunity wide after 73 minutes there was a feeling of inevitability about the destination of the points
It was a hopeful long ball to the far post which made the difference.
Jonathan Douglas' free-kick was blocked and Yeovil failed to stop the home captain from launching another bomb into the area.
The Irish midfielder wasn't short of targets.
"They had four 6ft 3ins centre forwards on late on (Tresor Kandol, Jermaine Beckford, Tore Andre Flo and De Vries) and we conceded. It is hard to take," said Jones.
"Mugged is probably the way we feel having lost so late on and in the manner of that to a header."
Dutchman De Vries was able to get above Matty Rose to loop his effort over stranded Yeovil keeper Romain Larrieu, who could only watch as it dropped just under the bar.
Even after the goal, Lloyd Owusu could have got Yeovil a point, but the brave striker, who had played much of the game with a debilitating back strain because of a lack of other forward options, was unable to glance in a near-post header from Anthony Barry's corner.
Leeds may be recovering from the lowest point in their history but Elland Road remains one of the most daunting grounds in England.
The away fans are shoved into a corner of the stadium, many in the second tier.
Leeds supporters - more than 25,000 on Saturday - ring the pitch, creating a cauldron of noise which would embarrass many Premier League clubs.
A sense of injustice over their 15-point deduction, which puts Leeds 12th in the table and not nine points clear at the top, has obviously fostered such vocal backing.
But Yeovil's experienced side did not take a backward step and can be proud of the way they took the game to Leeds.
In the first half Dennis Wise's men only managed two shots. At the other end a sweet 19th-minute move should have ended with Barry's first league goal for Yeovil. Stewart, Owusu and Paul Warne combined to play in the young midfielder. Keeper Kasper Ankergren saved the first effort and Barry's follow-up was blocked.
Then Warne had a chance himself after Kevin Betsy teed him up from a corner but again Ankergren was defiant.
After the break, Warne might have done better with an angled shot that was just too high after Stewart's clever pass while, if he had been 100 per cent fit, Owusu might have reached Betsy's curling left-wing cross at the far post.
Home frustration then saw manager Wise launch a volley of abuse at Jones after the left-back took treatment for a foul.
In a microcosm of the game, Jones, a committed Christian, gave as good as he got back to the former Chelsea captain, and it was moments later that Yeovil fashioned the best chance of the match for Stewart.
Following his loan move from Bristol City on Friday, Betsy had spoken of his desire to create chances and he probably had something like this one in mind.
His right-wing pull-back found Stewart racing into the box from his midfield role.
The ball looked to have dropped perfectly on to the Bristolian's favoured left foot, but he put it wide.
Betsy said: "The crowd had to lift them (Leeds) numerous times but we didn't concentrate for the full 90 minutes and we got punished."
Yeovil have now gone three games without finding the net and boss Russell Slade said: "I can't praise my centre-backs (Scott Guyett and Terrell Forbes) enough, but at some stage they have to have the pressure taken off them with a goal for us."
Tomorrow night's Johnstone's Paint Trophy second round tie at Hereford would be a good place to start.

Leeds United hit the striker jackpot

For several weeks now, Leeds United's club shop has stocked a line of clothing bearing the slogan 'Where's Yeovil?'
As a club with designs on the Premiership, United's merchandise was produced at their expense rather than Yeovil Town's, and the question has been asked by smaller institutions than Leeds.
Before the middle of 2003, the Somerset borough had never been represented in the Football League.
Yeovil has a population of around 40,000 people, proving that size is not everything. The recent history of the town's football club is one of sustained success, and United, for all their merits, cannot claim as much.
Saturday's game at Elland Road was the first competitive fixture between the clubs, and Yeovil succeeded in establishing that their potential is greater than their reputation.
Of all the clubs waiting to cross swords with Leeds, Yeovil may have been most bemused by the pre-game suggestion from Dennis Wise that United had already met the most proficient of League One's teams.
Last season's play-off finalists know their way around this division, and their experience is already showing. Placed seventh before Saturday with a creditable defensive record, Russell Slade was not about to forego a game at Elland Road which, while invariably challenging, was also winnable.
But for an uncharacteristic and inaccurate finish from Marcus Stewart, Yeovil would likely have inflicted United's first league defeat of the season.
The bulk of the credit seemed to belong to the Somerset club at full-time but, after conceding an 89th-minute winner to Mark De Vries, Slade was forced to concede that moral victories will not renew his side's involvement in the play-offs.
Yeovil's preparation was clearly excellent, and their manager had versed his players fully in what to expect from their hosts.
You wondered whether Slade had picked through the events at Boundary Park five days earlier, when United required a goal in the fifth minute of injury-time to put paid to Oldham.
If he had then Saturday's defeat will have seemed like replay. This, after all, is Leeds, and it is impossible not to question whether something at Elland Road is meant to be.
United's ability to turn plain afternoons into golden moments has a touch of alchemy about it.
Wise's players delivered an ordinary performance on Saturday, and their contribution during the first half was their most ineffective display since the opening 45 minutes against Tranmere Rovers on August 11.
On that occasion, Wise used the half-time interval at Prenton Park to inject his side with spirit, and a similar situation developed on Saturday.
United's approach to the second half displayed the pace and the commitment to measured passing which had been missing during the first, and the improvement was responsible for leaving De Vries in place to settle the game a minute from time.
