first half: 0-0
United manager Simon Grayson shuffled his starting line-up for the second friendly, with the boss keen to look at different partnerships in another game played in searing heat in eastern Europe.
Neill Collins was handed the captain's armband and Davide Somma played up-front with Luciano Becchio.
Somma was the first to threaten for Leeds when he won an early corner, and the hosts were defending again moments later when Fede Bessone escaped down the left and whipped in a good cross.
Leeds had made a more positive start that in the opening, and the home goalkeeper was called into action inside the opening 15 minutes when he saved from Robert Snodgrass.
While looking shaky at the back, Kosice did look more comfortable with the ball and after Bessone hacked a cross clear over his own bar, the home side also tested Shane Higgs with a strike from distance.
But it was United who were the bigger threat, and the best chance so far came on 22 minutes when Snodgrass delivered a good cross from the right and Somma headed just over the bar.
On the half-hour, Jonny Howson broke from midfield, but an offside flag was raised against Somma, despite the player appear to time his run to perfection.
Moments later, another good Leeds break was halted when Somma was the victim of another marginal offside decision.
And there were two more good moments again just before the break when, first, it took some good defending to cut out a Bessone cross when Snodgrass was well-placed and, on the stroke of half-time, Bradley Johnson sent in a cross which eluded everyone and drifted out.
Grayson made a number of changes at the break, introducing Kasper Schmeichel and replacing his full-backs and strikers.
United; Higgs (Schmeichel), Connolly (Hughes), Collins, Bromby (White), Bessone, Snodgrass, Kilkenny, Howson, Johnson, Becchio (Grella), Somma (Paynter).
United started the second period firmly on the front foot and Billy Paynter had a great opportunity inside the opening five minutes after a good ball from Johnson. The home keeper reacted well though and as Paynter squared the ball was cleared with Mike Grella waiting.
Snodgrass was proving a real threat now and after seeing another cross thwarted by the goalkeeper he tested the stopper with a strike from distance.
But it was no surprise when Snodgrass had a hand in the opening goal. His cross was nodded on by Johnson and the waiting Paynter was able to smash home a volley to net his first goal for the club.
As the game headed towards the final 20 minutes, Grella looked to spark an opening, but after playing a one-two with Max Gradel it took some good defending to avert the danger.
Grella did cause a problem on 75 minutes, though, when he was brought down by the home goalkeeper for a clear-cut penalty. While the American wanted the ball, it was Snodgrass who stepped up, but the keeper got down well to save his effort.
Moments later, the Kosice goalkeeper denied Leeds again when Gradel delivered a good, clean strike.
United almost made it 2-0 on 84 minutes though. Grella picked out the advancing Paynter, but the former Swindon man couldn't keep his shot down and lifted it over the bar.
It had been a good performance by Leeds and it wasn't until the dying moments that the hosts created anything of any note - on that occasion a corner was headed wide of the mark.
But the last chance fell to Leeds when Tom Lees just couldn't keep his header down from a corner after Paynter had a shot deflected wide.
