« på: August 31, 2006, 17:15:06 »
Går sterke rykter om at vi vil ha han tilbake på lån. Med tanke på skadene vi har så er jo dette en grei signering. Douglas er en brukbar spiller som GIR alt og som kjenner Blackie og spillerne, og vil dermed trenge kort tilpasningstid.

Er en artig-kar på waccoe som kaller seg for twobob som skriver kommentarer på diverse transfers spekulasjoner! Veldig artig til tider!! [:D]

Arsenal are willing to put forward a pragmatic solution to the Ashley Cole saga by offering to exchange him for William Gallas and £10m. (The Times)
In a less pragmatic but somehow more satisfying solution, a vocal minority at Arsenal are offering to pay the preening, self-worshipping, duplicitous, backstabbing woodentop his wages, bring him on as sub just once so he’s fukked for the CL, then dump him in the reserves for the rest of his season, prompting the whining showpony to hire lawyers and complain about his human rights getting shafted.

Tottenham are in negotiations with Real Madrid for former Arsenal target Julio Baptista. The asking price is £12m and Spurs are willing to go to £10m. (Various)
Bless ‘em, like kids in a toyshop with all their Carrick-shaped cash burning an ickle hole …

… Spurs are also considering Parma's Australian midfielder Vince Grella. (The Times)
“Ooh! Ooh! Da-ah-ad! Can I have a Vince Grella too? Sparky’s got an Australian, he says they’re great! He’s not that expensive, Da-ah-ad, go ooooon!” …

… And Tottenham have gone back to Middlesbrough with a new £9m offer for Stewart Downing. (Daily Mirror)
Confronted by supporters at a meet-the-fans do who were concerned he might be pissing money up the wall like a drug-crazed slot-machine junkie on a Vegas spree, fun-lovin’ Marty Jol hit back: “Lishen my friend, I’m the man who convinshed Shir Aliksh Fergushon that Micky Carrick ish equal in value to three and half Damien Duffs. You go and do shome bishness like that my friend, THEN maybe I pretend to give a tupenny fuk what you think.”

Meanwhile Middlesbrough have made an approach to sign Jonathan Woodgate on loan from Real Madrid but his £90,000 per week wages could be a problem. (Various)
‘Could be a problem?!’ Hmm, you think? That’s like saying I’m planning to build my own stunning glass-and-sustainably-grown-cedar clifftop eco-home, but the fact I can barely hammer a nail in straight could be a problem ...

... But Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is confident the lure of Champions League football will take Woodgate to Anfield. (The Sun)
Boro boss Southgate is equally confident, however, that the lure of getting his Mam to do his laundry, plus the lure of regularly drinking a skinful, collapsing in his own vomit and getting into fights at kicking-out time will take him to Boro.

Abel Xavier is training with Middlesbrough after completing his one-year doping ban (The Mirror)
However, he spent his one-year doping ban training with Leeds; now he’s got a medial cruciate tear, a sore hamstring and a niggly groin that might need surgery.

Fulham are lining up a shock move for Dutch striker Patrick Kluivert. (The Sun)
Golly. Yes. HUGE surprise, that. Let’s see: washed-up primadonna moneybags ex-international Prem flop with no discernible appetite for the scrap interests desperate but rich fast-fading Prem flops with fashionable postcode but no discernible appetite for the scrap. Such a shock I might need a little lie-down.

Rangers will sign defender Sasa Papac after Austria Vienna's failure to qualify for the Champions League group stages. (The Herald)
And presumably, rather than house-hunt, he’ll just stay in a swanky hotel for a few months, ‘cos there’ll be a clause in his contract saying he’s ok to jump on the first plane out when THEY fail to qualify again next Spring.

Hearts want striker Calum Elliot to join Motherwell on loan instead of Dunfermline or Falkirk, but the teenager could be the subject of big-money offers from English clubs next week. (The Sun) …
Dunfermline want to take striker Stevie Crawford back to East End Park, but Aberdeen are demanding defender Greg Shields in return. (Daily Record) …
Defender Darren Dods will make a final attempt today to force Inverness Caledonian Thistle to sell him to Dundee United. (Daily Express)
Yeah, look, sorry, not being anti-Scottish or anything, but I’ve read those about four times now and still don’t understand what’s going on. That’s not football transfer gossip, that’s a rejected Hollyoaks outline, surely?

Hearts are interested in Hungarian striker Peter Rajczi, who is out of contract with FC Ujpest, but face competition from Dynamo Kiev, Brondby, Watford, Crystal Palace and Leeds. (The Herald)
So if it's not Hearts it's: European football, European football, Premiership, Championship with London address, Championship. I don’t think the order of the clubs interested is an accident, do you?

Everton, Bolton and West Ham have all offered Steed Malbranque an escape from Fulham. (Daily Express)
Everton have suggested a tunnel, with a bunch of pillows and a wig left behind in his bed to fool Chris Coleman, Bolton want to put a long-term ‘sleeper’ agent in the Fulham squad, start a decoy fire then smuggle him out in the mayhem. West Ham just want to send in some ‘erberts with balaclavas and crowbars.

Crystal Palace will launch a bid for Colchester midfielder Greg Halford. (Daily Mirror)
Camera crews on hand to film this historic ‘bid-launching’ were disappointed when it turned out to involve no more than Peter Taylor dialling a number on his mobile.

Roy Keane will be offered a bumper £6m deal to be the new manager of Sunderland. (The Sun)
Hmm. Might be ‘bumper’ to you or me. But £6m over how long, eh? Over three years and it’s a handy wedge. Any more and you’re down to £1.5m a year. Which is an insult to a man of his pedigree and professionalism. In fact, you’re running the risk there of making him a bit cross. Do you WANT to make him cross, eh? Well? Do you? …

… And Keane will be given a £20m-plus transfer kitty. (Daily Mirror)
And what the FUK is that supposed to mean, eh? Is it £20m, or MORE than £20m? How the fuk much is ‘plus’ eh? Why don’t you people EVER say what you fukkin mean? Eh? And how long is THAT meant to last me, eh? This fukkin window’s almost fukkin CLOSED now. You saying I’ll have to make do with these wankers til Christmas? Then you expect me to blow it all in January and turn this shower of shite into playoff candidates? WELL? …

... But "It is by no means certain" that Keane will take the Sunderland job because he is "seething" that his 2002 World Cup row with Niall Quinn has been dragged up. (Daily Express)
FUKKIN right. Just cos I called the cunt a Muppet in me book, am on record as hating him cos he sided with the English Bollix at Saipan, these fukkin press scum think they can drag it all up just to make trouble. Well I’ll save ‘em the fukkin bother, alright? I fukkin QUIT! Y’fukkin amateurs.

Ronaldinho has said Barcelona "don't have to worry" about Champions League opponents Chelsea. (Various)
Blues Boss, Mourinho, meanwhile hit back in the war of fake nonchalance by saying “Darcelona? Hmm? Oh, sorry, BARcelona. No. not ringing a bell, sorry.”

John Terry wrecked a water cooler in frustration after Chelsea's shock defeat at Middlesbrough. (The Sun)
Not only that. Frank ‘Franky’ Lampard took out a foot-spa, Shevchenko drew male and female genitalia on a hi-tech massage chair while Riccardo Carvalho forced his own faeces into all the shower heads. Didier Drogba was about to start ripping clothes-hooks off the wall when instinct got the better of him and he threw himself full length over the kit basket and demanded a penalty.

Everton's Andy Johnson will be given the chance to stake a claim for an England place by Steve McClaren. (The Times) [/b]

The balding ex-Eagle said: It’s a great time to be an over-rated so-so badge-kissing dive-monkey. Ashton’s crocked, Owen’s crocked, Defoe can't get a kick, Rooney’s lairy and that only leaves Crouchy. Stay injury-free til autumn and you’ve a great chance of cracking in a hatful against Andorra or whoever. I bet Macca’s even still got Heskey on speed-dial.

[:D] Denne MÃ… jo postes på oef.

Here's one hot off the press for you! I've just got in from my esteemed nightclub, where a fair proportion of the Leeds United first team squad were present, some looking a little worse for wear. These were they:

Tony Warner

Very tall. Sensible. Enjoyed a boogie to a few R&B numbers.

Gary Kelly

You nightowls out there who frequent Leeds City Centre will know that Gary is famed for his consummate professionalism. Pissed as per usual. Smoked several cigarettes (if it was good enough for Revie's team...) Spent a fair amount of time trying to coerce girls into dancing with him, with limited success. Requested House of Pain "Jump Around" to which I duly obliged. Terrible but enthusiastic dancer, which should be commended. To his credit he did exchange a Leeds Salute with me but he was the bloke at the end when the lights go up going "Go on, just one more! Frank Sinatra". Sorry to deny you Gary, but it was hometime.

Killer

To cool for school. Carried himself well. Didn't appear too pissed. Had a boogie to some R&B. Popular with the girls.

Steve Stone

Looked very happy. Fairly tipsy. Smiling all the time. Had a bit of dance to some of the more golden oldie tracks, which wasn't surprising. I prayed he wouldn't try any fancy moves for fear of snapping his legs. Called me a "f**king wanker" in jest at the end as beer was sprayed in his direction, despite the fact that I wasn't drinking, was a good 15 feet away and the culprit was one Shaun Derry...

Shaun Derry

Disturbing. Socialises like he plays. All over the place, covered a lot of ground. Literally. From my slightly elavated position in the DJ box I watched him stride purposefully around the club tapping random members of the public on the shoulder. They turned to face him and he simply raised his eyebrows or pointed towards the sky, before walking off. Stood on a bar stool and leapt off during House of Pain. Most of the above was completed with a bottle of Bud pressed to his lips, with both hands wrapped around the neck of the bottle. Pissed. Gave Stoney and several others his beer shower deep into injury time. For reasons I can't quite put my finger on, he's gone further up in my estimation!!

Kevin Nicholls

Like the new kid at the party. Leaned against the wall, pissed. Lost his footing a bit, readjusted, then leaned against the wall again. Had a bit of a boogie when they first arrived. Preferred dance music.

Eddie Lewis

Spent most of his time slightly mesmerised and grinning at Derry. Seemed happy enough. Took it easier than the rest like the lightweight Yank he is. Was wearing a terrible peach argyle sweater. Danced to a few of the oldies with Steve Stone.

Robbie Blake

Sunk a few beers, but was undistinguished. Had a dance with Lewis and Stone but seemed more preoccupied with chatting up girls.

Richard Cresswell

Our erstwhile centre-forward made his grand entrance by break-dancing on the dance floor! Proceeded to do a head stand and started scissor-kicking his legs. Given our current dearth of strikers I feared the worst. Happily no injuries resulted and Cressie went onto have a stormer, being the last to leave at the very end with a blonde thing on his arm. Except she was a tiny bit chubby. But we all know that fat girls try harder.

You're telling me we're not gonna walk this league? With that team spirit? Piece of piss!

HVA I FAEN SKJER'A!?!

*Warner - 8 - My man of match (when I realised we were kicking the other way & he was our keeper).
Kelly - 7 - Never went missing or showed any signs of nipping off to the bar
Butler - 6 - The sooner he gives birth the better
Kilgallon - 7 - Too quick and impossing to stay with us (also get greegs in to free up loads of bench space)
Crainey - 7 - best performance yet from him (not bad for a ginger jock)
Stone - 7 - His experience & passing ability help to make up for his Douglas Baderesque speed.
Bakke - 6 - Could do with sending someone to the enthusiasm shop for him.
Derry - 7 - Didnt recognise him without the air & with his Giles type passing "attempts".
Lewis - 5 - I think he played shit but I am biased, I like him.
Healy - 7 - As this reputation of not caring & wants a move so to avoid falling out with people on here he was crap.
Horsfield - 7 - As the phisique of Butlers dreams and looks nice in that new shirt

Carole - 7 - Awsome (this bit aint a piss take) this kid is the dogs do-dars
Westlake - 7 - Will become a permanant favourite with the fans
Moore - 5 - Looked good on the bench, then came on late but tired quickly after his first minute

Overall 7 out of 10. Great start considering that we wasted all preseason for whatever reason (some good some bad). I am definately very upbeat after watching the game & realising that a Leeds team can have a midfield that plays good football, me thinks Curbishly might have to wait a while longer than October.

------------------------------------------------------------------
*Warner - 8 - made some crucial saves although would like to see him off his line faster
Kelly - 7 - Looked solid
Butler - 6 - Some good tackles and won most headers but seemed run about a little by Earnshaw
Killa - 8 - Very solid at the back, won most tackles and headers althouhg would like to see him keep the ball on the floor
Crainey - 8 - Fantastic performance with some good tackles and attacked well
Stone - 7 - Looked lost in the first half but 2nd half looked very involved and looked very creative once Westlake was introduced into the game
Bakke - 7 - Like Stone, looked better as the game went on, but expected more.
Derry - 7 - Gave the ball away cheaply in the first half and was at fault for some of Norwich's chances, but second half was far better, passed the ball well, long balls were very good and was part on a strong 2nd half midfield.
Lewis - 6 - Ok but nothing special, passing was good and was more involved than last season, but still cant beat man.
Healy - 7 - Good penalty, looked a little over run by the defence at times but when he had space made some very good passes.
Horsefield - 8 - Ran his bollocks off, great at holding the ball up, made some very smart passes and looked very comitted to the cause.

Subs:
Moore - 6 - Not enough time to have a real impact on the game as usual, but gave all he had.
Wstlake - 8 - Awesome on the ball, found space and once he was on the pitch, brought the best out of Derry, Stone and basically the rest of the team, god knows why he didnt start and should definately be in the 1st 11 on tuesday, just the sort of creativity that Leeds lacked last season.
Carole - 8 - Very good on the ball, looked lively, pace, beat men, in and around the box and again a bit of creativity that Leeds need.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
*Disagree with the comments on Stone so far. I thought his workrate was superb for the first 70 minutes, and he was involved in just about everything we did well.

Otherwise:

Warner :8 Great save from Earnshaw and looked good dealing with corners
Kelly: 7 Supported well out wide, not too troubled.
Butler: 6 - Kept losing his man and then pointing and shouting at others
Killa: 7 - Did most stuff well
Crainey: 7 - Like watching Brazil
Stone: 8 - involved himself in everything, lacked pace but passed very well
Derry: 7 - Not fully fit, sometimes tried a difficult pass when an easy one would do
Bakke: 5 - Not fit, lazy, woeful distribution
Lewis: 5 - Won't take people on, didn't track back, drop him.
Horsfield: 8 - Held the ball up well
Healy: 8 - Some great touches, well taken penalty

Carole: Did well at the end, looked for the ball, kept it well and linked up with Kelly and Stone
Westlake: Helped keep the ball very well in the last 10 minutes, something we didn't do last season
Moore: Did he touch the ball?

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Warner - 7.5 - Looked Good. Couple of cracking saves. seems like he'll dominate his area. Good Debut
Kelly - 7 - Steady
Butler - 6 - How much weight has he put on???? Look very pedestrian but won a couple of good challenges
Kilgallon - 8 - Excellent. Our MoM.
Crainey - 7 - Not bad for him. Pinged a few very good balls around and got a couple of early tackles in
Stone - 7 - Poor out right early on but some very astute passing once he came into the middle
Bakke - 5 - Usual ineffectual self. Was knackered by half time, though god knows why. A disgrace to the shirt.
Derry - 6.5 - Looked off the pace but got stuck in all the way through
Lewis - 6 - Also looked off the pace. Same as last year.
Healy - 7.5 - Not bad performance. took penalty well but looked pissed off when he came off
Horsfield - 7 - Ran himself into the ground, niggled at Doherty alll game. Never a real goal threat though. Missed a sitter.

Carole - 7 - Rod Wallace look-a like but seemed confident (Blackwell will shake that out of him) and pacey
Westlake - 7 - Mark my words this guy will be good if he keeps up with that. Looked lively, wanted the ball, ran off the ball (I recognised that part of football games from years ago...).
Moore - 4 - never got into the game. Why is he still here? And how did he score all those goals at Burnley?

Generally, much the same as last year. Opposition played better football, had the better chances, looked quicker than us. However we dug in, had a fair few chances ourselves and held on for a win. We started 4-4-2 !!!!!! but as soon as it got a bit sticky Blackwell went back to 4-5-1.

WARNING SIGNS
1) Mrs Butler is obviously a bloody good cook !!!!
2) We lack any pace at all in midfield (await the real introduction of Nicholls and Westlake though)
3) Healy better bang em in cos The Horse ain't going to
4) If we let Killa go we could have problems

---------------------------------------------------------------------
*A good 3 points against a tricky opponent. After a decent enough start, Norwich took control of the first half and ran rings around our outnumbered midfield. We got on top towards the end of the half, though. An interesting conundrum for us 4-4-2 fans, as I reckon we'd almost certainly have lost had Blackie not moved Stone infield and put Healy into a wider position. Hats off to the manager for making the change. Norwich started like they meant business in the second half but we kept them at bay with a mixture of hard work and some good fortune. Eventually, they seemed to run out of steam but could still have nicked a point towards the end. Has to be said, though, that if Earnshaw had been able to hit a cow's arse with his banjo, we'd surely have lost by a fair old margin.

Warner 8 - confident debut, probably saved us from a beating; looks a safe pair of hands
Kelly 6 - usual mixed bag of the good, the bad and the aimless hoof forward
Butler 5 - Earnshaw gave him a torrid first half; surely a man out of time?
Kilgallon 7 - got better and better as the game wore on; roll on the close of that transfer window
Crainey 6 - decent enough performance with some good passing; understandably ran out of steam
Stone 6 - tidy in his work but no longer has the legs to really hurt opponents from the flank
Derry 6 - off the pace, especially at the start, but kept battling away
Bakke 5 - as wasteful and frustrating as ever
Lewis 5 - weak and lily-livered, let's give the boy Carole a go in his place
Healy 6 - occasionally menacing and took his penalty well; odd that he was subbed
Horsfield 6 - rugged old warhorse did exactly what it says on the tin; wish he'd put away that sitter for 2-0

Carole - looks like he can make a menace of himself if we can get the ball to him in the right areas
Westlake - promising, helped us control the game towards the end; I'd start him in place of Bakke
Moore - hard-working and mediocre

Overall, this was something to build on. We've taken a barely-deserved 3 points from a useful opponent and done it with a patched up team including new faces and players who've had virtually no pre-season. A sweaty but ultimately enjoyable beginning to my comeback season.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
*Warner - 8 - Solid - who needs Sully eh ?
Kelly - 7 - In control
Butler - 6 - Poor - not his usual self.
Kilgallon - 9 - Simply outstanding
Crainey - 7 - Not bad - poor passing though.....
Stone - 7 - Lively - but tired towards the end.
Bakke - 6 - Looked very unfit.
Derry - 7 - Good game
Lewis - 6 - Lively but not the finished article today.
Healy - 8 - Good finish - livley and I'd have kept him on...
Horsfield - 8 - Great debut - hungry and pit himself about.

Carole - 7 - Good 15 mins or so..
Westlake - 6 - Looked good on the ball.
Moore - 5 - Not enough time to make an impression...

Team performance - 7/10 - just wish Horsfield had poked the ball home in the second half....

Enjoyed KB's rant on Radio Leeds on the way home....looks like he means business this season...

---------------------------------------------------------------------
*Warner: 8 - Assured performance - couple of top class saves from Earnshaw.
Kelly: 7 - Steady. Linked up nicely with both Stone & Carole
Butler: 6 - Could be our achilles heel this year - 1 season too far perhaps
Kilgallon: 9 - Hardly put a foot wrong all day
Crainey: 7 - Defensively sound despite a lack of pace. Passing disappointing.
Stone: 7 - Better once he moved inside. Cross for Horsfield deserved better.
Derry: 7 - Not at his commanding best. A few misplaced passes which could have cost us on another day.
Bakke: 6 - Disappeared for portions of the game. Flashes of what he can do though.
Lewis: 6 - Needs to try and beat his man. Should have done better with the header
Healy: 8 - Most of the good stuff involved Healy. Petulance led to booking though.
Horsfield: 7 - Worked hard. Held the ball up well. Should have scored though.

Carole: 7 - Looks a decent prospect. Demanded the ball and used it well.
Westlake: 6 - Not enough time to judge. Kept the ball and passed well.
Moore: 6 - Keen and committed in the short time he had. We'll not see much of him this season though.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
*Warner - 8 - Couple of great saves. Good Debut
Kelly - 7 - Steady performance as always
Butler - 6 - Decent game, won most things in the air and made a couple of big tackles but always looks on edge when playing against pace.
Kilgallon - 8 - Didn't put a foot wrong, lets hope we keep him!
Crainey - 8 - His best game in a Leeds shirt to date imo.
Stone - 6 - Ok performance, won a few tackles but cant beat a man.
Bakke - 7 - We know he is better than that, gave the ball away a few times but will come good.
Derry - 7 - Looked Unfit which was to be expected but never stopped.
Lewis - 5 - Looked off the pace. Left back might be his position if he learns to tackle
Healy - 8 - Took penalty well, seemed to be involed in everything.
Horsfield - 8 - Won everything in the air, ran himself to a standstill. More aggressive than Hulse. My man of the match.

Carole - 7 - Looks like he can beat a man, quick, tricky - encouraged by him.
Westlake - 7 - Passed the ball well
Moore - 5 - never got into the game

---------------------------------------------------------------------
*Warner - 8 - Excellent game, kept us in it with some great saves
Kelly - 7 - Steady performance
Butler - 5 - Needs dropping
Kilgallon - 7 - Didn't put a foot wrong, won every 50/50 ball & dominated in the air
Crainey - 7 - better performance than most last year
Stone - 6 - Didn't impress
Bakke - 6 - Clearly not match fit
Derry - 7 - Not at his best, did enough - better in the 1st half
Lewis - 5 - He's got no pace, 100% not a winger - seemed more comfortable at left back
Healy - 8 - Excellent off the ball movement, took the penalty well & looked dangerous
Horsfield - 7 - Decent performance, not fit (no fault of his own) - seems like the kinda player you can bring on with 20 minutes remaining to sure things up

Carole - 7 - Lennon without the skill, exciting player - actually looked to take on his man
Westlake - 7 - Lively
Moore - 5 - Shit

Blackwell - 8 - So shit he's brilliant? Taking off Healy baffled me, specially considering how tired Bakke looked. But bringing Crainey off and dropping Lewis to left back worked really well, we looked a better team.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree. I thought Stone was excellent once he'd moved inside. A real influence on the match.

Warner 7 - One great save, confident with crosses, looked a bit edgy dealing with pass backs
Kelly 7 - Showed the kind of form he produced last season
Crainey 6 - Exposed by lack of cover at times, but I thought he was competent
Butler 5 - Struggled a bit for pace (as was expected), but also dozed off a couple of times which was more disappointing
Kilgallon 7 - Not much wrong with that display
Derry 8 - Excellent display, authoritative
Stone 8 - Excellent once he had moved inside, an experienced head that leads by example
Bakke 5 - Poor distribution, not up to it for me
Lewis 5 - Didn't do enough, still no pace
Horsfield 7 - missing a complete sitter aside, it was a far superior display as target man to anything I thing Hulse could produce
Healy 7 - most good stuff going forawrd came through him

Westlake 7 - assured
Carole 7 - looks a good player

I used to watch Leeds as a kid and have also played there a few times so know just what an intimidating place Elland Road can be for a visiting team.
Leeds had a great home record last season and if they can repeat that then a place in the top six is achievable.
Manager Kevin Blackwell took on a very, very difficult job two years ago when things were still very much in free-fall after their Premiership relegation and has done amazingly well.
It was a real shame what happened in the play-off final against Watford because it took the shine off what had been an encouraging year. The very manner of the defeat will have left a sour taste in the mouths of some fans*insert kato*.
The signing of David Livermore*insert ian westlake* and Kevin Nicholls should improve the midfield, but it is Robbie Blake who I see as the potential key man. I played with Robbie at Bradford and he is a fantastic talent.
A fit and happy Robbie Blake can score 20-plus goals and that is what Leeds badly need now Rob Hulse has gone.
Verdict: Going up.

« på: Juli 22, 2006, 02:00:35 »
Har for tiden småangst for å ta fly(er 100% overbevist om at jeg kommer til å dø i freaki'h flyulykke), så hvilken alternative ruter til Leeds(over til england) finnes det egentlig? Vurderer ta meg en jomfrutur(dobbel betydning?) til ligaåpningen(dobbel betydning?).

Ordet er fritt / Bra YEP intervju av Gregan
« på: Juli 19, 2006, 18:17:36 »
BY PHIL ROSTRON

NEXT season being, on his own barometer, the most significant and important in his career, it was perhaps unfortunate for Sean Gregan that a vital piece of paperwork escaped his attention.

With Leeds United ready to embark on their week-long tour of Scandinavia, it became apparent that their no-nonsense defender had indulged in, well, a bit of nonsense.

Gregan had forgotten to renew his expiring passport and was necessarily left at home to train with the reserves and the youths.
The extenuating circumstances will perhaps find a more sympathetic ear internally than ever the Secretary of State would entertain.

A house move from Wetherby to Harrogate and all the niggling, irritating asides that such an exercise can bring has been heading the Gregan family agenda this summer.

"It has been very stressful," he says "and what I really could have done with was a couple of weeks away to unwind. But when you've got a one-year-old and a three-year-old you're very hesitant about subjecting them to a long flight so basically it's been all work and no play."

Expected

There was a nice diversion for everyone interested in football, of course, and the rugged centre-back says: "I watched a bit of the World Cup including, of course, all the England matches and while it all ended in disappointment I don't know why we expected any more really.
"I don't see what the big surprise was that we should be heading home so early from the tournament.

"I'm not going to tell Frank Lampard and Steve Gerrard what they should be doing – they're far better players than I am – but what I will say is that I've played in games settled by penalty shootouts and the pressure even at the level I was playing was unbearable, never mind in front of two billion people around the globe.

"But Italy were probably deserving winners because of their defensive qualities. I can relate to that. As a defender you adopt the mentality that ball or man might pass but never the two together or, better still, that the definitive clearance is of man and ball together. I liked seeing that."

Gregan, 32, fought a season-long battle in 2005/6 with Paul Butler and Matthew Kilgallon for the central-defensive roles and he confesses: "It was a difficult season last year from a personal point of view. When I was dropped from the team it was the first time that had happened in 15 years and it was hard to take.

"I've had well-documented problems with a small section of the fans and when you combine those things it's probably easier to stay knocked down than get back up and fight.

"To win my place back maybe tells those supporters a little bit of what I'm about. At the end of the day I might not be everybody's cup of tea but one guarantee is that I will always give my best.

"I played for the reserves on Saturday and gave all the effort I would have made in a first team fixture. I'm not one of these who'll just toss it off and not try. It was difficult to take – no-one likes being out of the team – but you will never find me wanting for effort.

"I feel F***er now than I did at this time last year and that's because I came in earlier with the younger players and got a head start.

"I want to get in the team as much as Butts and Killa do, especially now that I'm not 21 and just starting out anymore. Time is not particularly on my side so it's important I play as much as I can and that's what I want to do.

"I haven't given a thought yet to what I'll do when my playing career is over. I'm not one of these people who plans for tomorrow, preferring instead to get on with what happens today.

"I'd like to think, anyway, that I have a few years left in me yet. I dread to think what the combined ages were on a few occasions last season when there was Neil Sullivan, Gary Kelly, Butts and me in the team but, as I've said before, there's no substitute for experience.

"We had a good defensive record last season and the number of clean sheets we kept was amazing really.

"Just like Italy, you see, and they won a World Cup with it!

"If you're keeping clean sheets you can always nick a win with a free-kick or a penalty or just a ball breaking kindly for you, but it doesn't mean you can be labelled a boring or negative side because you haven't conceded.

"And it's not just luck that it happened like that. We do work on it."

Gregan recognises the weight of the challenge ahead for United, observing: "On reflection, losing Steve Stone last season was a big minus point for us. His absence meant we struggled down the right and we had to improvise with our system.

"That meant, unfortunately, that David Healy and Robbie Blake were playing in positions that aren't their best but getting Stoney back plus Frazer Richardson, who missed three or four months, will give us a better balance.

"In the final analysis goals win games – you'd get relegated if you drew every week – and I'm sure we'll be addressing that.

Harder

"It's an even harder league than last year. It's the hardest league of them all to get out of and it doesn't help when you see on the television that West Brom have signed this player and that and are hanging on to the players who were performing last season in the Premiership.

"There are 10 or 12 teams who can finish in that top two and there's going to be a little more expectation about Leeds when the line in the sand is that we were beaten play-off finalists just 90 minutes away from the Premiership.

"The only improvement on that is to be promoted. By my reckoning we need one or two additions to the squad to achieve that but the manager is working away to bring people in and it's nice to hear that Dave Livermore will be joining us from Millwall.

"I've played against him a few times over the years and he's a player who thrives on battle and likes to get his foot in. The more new faces who come in, the more fierce is the competition for places and that's a good thing.

"All the signs are good. Sebastien Carole, who has joined us from Brighton, did really well against us last season and it will be like having a new signing with Steve Stone. He's an old head who has played in a promotion-winning side from this division and, quite honestly, you can't have enough experience on board.

"The disappointment of Cardiff still rankles with me and a lot of the players. After all that effort and dedication to duty over 46 matches and to come so close is a big kick in the oojahs but you can go two ways with it.

"You can sit and sulk and give yourself 10 games into the season and be bottom of the league, or you can wipe the slate clean, hit the ground running and be up and away.

"On paper we've got a fairly tough start but you can't ask for anything more than a home game to begin with and Norwich won't be relishing the fixture.

"Hopefully there'll be a big crowd to cheer us on in the job in hand."

Yeah i know
