Hate seeing our academy lads poached by cat 1 academies. Got their debut shirts when they benched in the championship, and I’ll keep hold of them, but both have gone to premier teams now (almost) While ever we are cat 2 there’s nothing we can do to stop them being taken. Shame

Really impressed with Mateusz Bogusz' display against Western Sydney Wanderers so far.

He's got himself into some great attacking positions throughout the half, and the goal just tops it off.

Unbelievable find at just £250,000!

I actually think Forshaw is a tidy championship squad player but Shackleton,Bogusz & McCalmont are serious players all offer slightly different qualities but have BAGS of potential

13:08Beren Cross

That was that

Limited to four questions, unfortunately. Goalkeeping coach Marcos Abad was translating.

13:08Beren Cross

Message for the fans going into second season?

One of the things is improve, with illusion, the things we made last season. If we can improve what we made last season obviously we can arrive at the goal we want to achieve. The last season, our idea, our goal, was promotion, but finally we didn’t get.

Obviously everyone was disappointed, but now we renew this option, hopefully we will try, but the most important is we be in conditions to get and finally achieve.

13:04Beren Cross

Bamford - trying too hard?

For a striker it is very important they create chances. At the same time, for his confidence it is important he finally finishes these chances and scores. One of the first steps for a forward is it is important he creates a chance and makes steps in his performance in the pre-season and finally he scores goals.

Beren Cross

Thoughts on the overall performance?

Obviously, the difference between both teams is very clear and, at the same time, it was easier today to play against the opponent we have in front today.

12:59Beren Cross

Bielsa's answers coming now - first question on the match and Hernandez's impact

He brought balance in the second half. He give deep options in the right side in the first half and the continuity to play in attack.

12:35Beren Cross

More to come from Bielsa

I was first up and couldn’t type and ask questions at the same time.

12:31Beren Cross

Thoughts on the occasion?

The feeling is the country has a power because, finally, football is growing.

12:29Beren Cross

Bielsa asked about past Australia job opportunities...

Always, I had the illusion to be one option for Australia.

The minimum to talk with them, to know what they want. This contact never happened. I understand it was like this, but, honestly, I like to be part of the football in this country.

Welcome...

Welcome to our live coverage of Marcelo Bielsa’s press conference, with the Leeds United head coach due to speak to the media following today’s pre-season friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Hang tight and we’ll bring you updates from the Bankwest Stadium in Sydney.

Marcelo Bielsa press conference LIVE: Leeds United head coach on Western Sydney Wanderers clash - Leeds Live

Marcelo Bielsa is due to give his first Leeds United press conference since the play-off defeat to Derby County.

The Whites boss is speaking after today's friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers which brought the club's two-match tour to a close.

Bielsa gave an opportunity to 17-year-old Mateusz Bogusz after Adam Forshaw picked up a knock against Manchester United on Wednesday and the Pole did not disappoint, as he fired home from the edge of the box to give the visitors an early lead.

Kwame Yeboah leveled for the hosts just after the break, shortly before Kemar Roofe limped off injured. The match appeared to be heading to a draw before Pablo Hernandez popped up in the fifth minute of injury time to score an excellent individual winner.

Follow every question and answer from the Whites head coach right here.

Leeds United training - attack v defence

Leeds United stepped up their final preparations for the second and last friendly of their Australia tour on Friday evening at Sydney Olympic Park.

Unlike Tuesday’s session at Perth’s HBF Park, where 3,500-plus fans attended, New South Wales Rugby League’s Centre of Excellence hosted a handful of media with the team.

LeedsLive went along to watch the session, which is the first time any media have been invited to watch the team train under Marcelo Bielsa’s supervision.

Here’s a few things we picked out from the session.

Marcelo Bielsa shouts at the fourth official during the pre-season friendly match between Manchester United and Leeds United at Optus Stadium on July 17, 2019 in Perth, Australia`

Bielsa steals the show

Naturally, given how little we have seen of the head coach since May’s play-off agony, any opportunity to see the man at work is to be enjoyed.

The Argentine tends to speak very little, but takes a step back and watches absolutely everything he can. He seems to offer small bursts of direction from which assistants Diego Reyes and Diego Flores do the rest with the players.

Bielsa was pacing around the pitch while the players warmed up, including the goalkeepers. When it came to get down to business, he was nearby, stood in the middle of the various huddles, spoke and then moved away.

Leeds United's Australia tour
Perhaps most charming was the succinct, but warm encouragement he gave his players when they impressed him.

During one drill which tested how quickly they closed down an opponent, Stuart Dallas and Gaetano Berardi were audibly commended.

“Good, very good, Dallas!”

“Good, Bera!”

Stuart Dallas can be seen wearing a heads the ball bandage after the pre-season friendly match between Manchester United and Leeds United at Optus Stadium on July 17, 2019 in Perth, Australia(Image: Will Russell/Getty Images)
It’s simple, but given how little he speaks and how much distance he keeps, those few words must mean so much to each player, given Bielsa’s stature in the sport.

Forshaw out

The only one of the 16 players not to be involved in training was Adam Forshaw, who is still struggling with the knock he took off Ashley Young on Wednesday.

The Victor Orta interview in full - every word Leeds United chief said in his rare sit-down

The Manchester United captain slid through Forshaw late in the match, wide on the touchline and he faces a late fitness test before Saturday’s game.

Dallas was fine and is in contention after his head injury.

Bielsa’s English may be better than we know

Forshaw was out on the pitch with his team-mates, but keeping them company in his trainers rather than knocking about in his boots.

I noticed he was out there because he was in conversation with Bielsa without a translator. It wasn’t a 30-minute chat over a coffee, but long enough for the Argentine to hold his own.

While his more complicated, lengthy instructions were bellowed in Spanish, he must know a fair amount of English after more than a year with the Whites.

Bamford applause sums up team spirit

A few little nuggets of how the team is bonding from the session, but the loudest was the appreciation Patrick Bamford received for one quality finish inside the box.

Stuart Dallas exclusive: Leeds United man on head injury, Anthony Martial and 24/7 tour life

The team had been split into three units: three crossers on the left, three crossers on the right and seven others in the middle either attacking or defending the balls as they came in.

Bamford ran onto one from the left and cracked it with minimal effort into the top corner with his left peg. Bielsa, stood in the goalmouth, loved it and his team-mates even applauded it, something they did not do for anyone else.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Pontus Jansson!

For £ 5,5 millioner så er han et røverkjøp!

Patrick Bamford reveals why Leeds United will be better in Marcelo Bielsa's second season - Leeds Live

Patrick Bamford has given fresh insight into what it's like to work under Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds United, and what to expect in the upcoming season.

The striker was speaking to the media during the pre-season tour of Australia, in which he was chosen to lead the line against Manchester United after featuring against York before the team made the trip down under.

Bamford’s yet to score in pre-season but he appears to have the trust of Bielsa.

His debut season for the Whites was often frustrating. Signed a few weeks into the transfer window, he didn’t get a full pre-season and suffered a long injury lay-off in the early weeks of the campaign.

Patrick Bamford opens up on Leeds United boo boys, stick and that Aston Villa dive

Things got worse in the former Middlesbrough man’s stop-start season when he was handed a two-match ban for exaggerated simulation in an incident with Aston Villa’s Anwar El Ghazi. That came at a crucial point in the season, and he was unavailable for the first leg of the play-off semi-final against Derby.

He opened up on that incident, saying he regrets it , but nevertheless took a lot of positives from his injury-ravaged season and appears confident for the upcoming centenary campaign.

'He brings into your game what you've never thought of'

“You’ve probably heard many stories, but he’s a very clever man,” Bamford said, when asked about what it was like to work under Bielsa.

“A very clever tactical genius, I suppose as most people say. He brings into your game that you’ve never thought and he does things that most managers never think of, that sets him apart.

“The way that the top coaches in the Premier League speak about him just says it all. He’s a top coach.”

Marcelo Bielsa going through notes ahead of the pre-season friendly against York
He was also keen to look at the bigger picture of the symbolic value and ambition shown by having the respected former Argentina boss in charge at Elland Road.

“I think it kind of shows from the chairman, and the club as a whole, it sets our stall out and shows what we’re trying to achieve,” he responded when asked what it means to have a figure like Bielsa in charge of the club.

“They’ve put a lot of hope and a lot of trust in us as players and in Marcelo, and I think last year had we gone up, you’d have said ‘wow, what a dream first season’.

“But it was more than just getting promoted last year, we changed the style of play. It was total football - more people than just Leeds fans started watching Leeds because it was so frenetic, high-pressure and entertaining to watch.”

There’s a danger of the way last season ended weighing heavy on Bamford and the rest of the squad, but the striker is making the right noises about learning lessons from the capitulation to Derby.

There’s a confidence and sense of positivity when he speaks about the upcoming second season under Bielsa, who he’s delighted decided to stay.

“After last season, getting so far and not making it, we felt like we’d let him down a little bit because we know how much time he puts into the team,” he added.

'For a while we were in the dark as much as Leeds fans'

“We were delighted when he signed on, and we always thought he was going to stay no matter what anyway. But for a while, we were in the dark as much as Leeds fans and we shared the same delight when he signed this contract.”

Bamford strongly believes that the team will be better next year, having gotten used to Bielsa’s methods and knowing exactly what he wants from the team.

There will be no deviating from what supporters became accustomed to last season - it will be more of Bielsa's trademark high-octane style of football going forward, the 25-year-old confirmed.

Leeds United's expected starting XI for Western Sydney Wanderers friendly

“If you look at it, that was our first year getting used to the style of play, the high intensity, the constant pressing,” he continued.

“He’ll admit that he demands a lot of his players, but if you think of it that way, the second year we’ll be more acclimatised so we should be able to do it for longer.

'You believe in everything he does'

“Keeping it up is the right way to go, we shouldn’t change our style just because we fell at the last hurdle - we learn from it, but you stay true to your identity.

“When you’ve got a coach with such a big character and name, then immediately you show respect, you believe in everything he does and I think you can see on the pitch everyone wears their heart on the sleeve for him.”

Retaining the vast majority of last term’s unit and adding quality like Helder Costa should bridge part of the gap, but Forshaw admits there is more to be done on the pitch.

The physical side of the game, startlingly, still needs to be upped in Bielsa ’s eyes.

“There was a couple of things the manager spoke about at the end of the season, things we can improve on from a physical point of view and things we, maybe, lacked as a team,” said Forshaw.

Beren Cross on Leeds United 0-4 Man United

Heavyweight status has always followed Leeds United’s fan base, but Adam Forshaw feels the team is finally deserving of that status too going into 2019/20.

There has never been any doubt the Elland Road outfit is far too big, historic and storied for England’s second tier , but the on-pitch offering has been lacking for long periods of the past 15 years.

Looking past that drop into the third tier, there had been a mid-table trend to the recent United campaigns, until Marcelo Bielsa arrived and kept the Whites in the top three for virtually all of 2018/19.

Victor Orta's inside line on how Leeds United landed number one target Helder Costa

Speaking exclusively to LeedsLive in Australia , Forshaw certainly feels the Whites are among the big favourites for promotion given how they played almost everyone off the park last term.

“I feel like we’re a lot more of a heavyweight than we was last season, going into the season,” he said

“Although [there was] the disappointment of us finishing third and losing in the play-offs, on the whole it was a successful season in terms of putting Leeds on the map properly again.

“This year we definitely want to finish in those top two places. I would say we’re a heavyweight in the league now.”

It has been a little over two months since the desperate disappointment of that infamous play-off loss to Derby County.

The team has been back in training for nearly four weeks, but Forshaw has seen little evidence of a hangover or feeling sorry for themselves.

Leeds United's Australia tour
“There hasn’t been a hangover. As players, you’ve just got to move on. We can’t be feeling sorry for ourselves this season, thinking ‘what if?’” he said.

“We’ve got a job at hand and we set the levels so high last season, we’ve made a few good additions and we can improve on last season definitely.”

In the end, the Whites were six points and a few goals short of getting the job done last season. Regardless of how impressive Bielsa was, some minor tweaks do need to be made.

Retaining the vast majority of last term’s unit and adding quality like Helder Costa should bridge part of the gap, but Forshaw admits there is more to be done on the pitch.

The physical side of the game, startlingly, still needs to be upped in Bielsa ’s eyes.

WHY IS FFP IS IMPORTANT IN UEFA? ASK LEEDS UNITED

For the 2000-2001 season, the four semifinalists for the UEFA Champions League were perennial contenders Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, defending runners-up Valencia CF from La Liga, and an English club named Leeds United. It wasn’t well-known at the time but following failure to qualify for the Champion’s League the following two seasons (which deprived the club of the riches of Champion’s League profits which are divided among qualifying clubs) the club, which had built their contending squad with the help of incurring huge debts financially imploded at which point news of their shoddy financial management became known to all of football. The resulting internal financial chaos resulted in the term “Doing a Leeds” being added to football lexicon and saw a regular title contending club in Leeds drop to the second division after the 2003-2004 season and then for the first time in their history falling all the way down to the third division from 2007 to 2010. The story of Leeds, as well as insane debt build up by mainly English and Spanish clubs, led to the adoption of Financial Fair Play (FFP) by UEFA in the early 2010s. If FFP had been in place earlier, Leeds may not have been able to spend their way into the Champions League, but they would possibly still be in the middle of the Premiership instead of fighting it out for promotion back to the top flight.

According to the official UEFA website, FFP is designed to prevent clubs from spending more than they earn, ensure that in any given year they pay their bills on debts, and was not intended to make sure smaller clubs could compete with larger clubs which presumably have bigger wallets but the flaws of FFP are best discussed another piece. The reason that FFP matters right now is the historic Neymar transfer which UEFA must do their due diligence concerning (even if they find irregularities they will allow the move to go through). I am not suggesting that like Leeds United, Paris Saint-Germain is built on wobbly loans but given that they just more than doubled the world record transfer fee they must ask for PSG’s financial records. For their part, the French club seems to be very willing to share their records with UEFA. This will be of little consolation to Barcelona fans, bitter about losing one of their best attackers, and it will do little but frustrate fans of small teams who could only dream that their team could make a transfer ninety percent smaller than the 222 million Euro fee paid for Neymar but none of this is being done for comedy or window dressing.

DANNY ROSE has been backed to complete an emotional return to Leeds United - by his dad.

Rose’s future at Tottenham is in huge doubt after he was left out of the touring party for the pre-season trip to Asia.

The England left-back has two years left on his Spurs contract but it appears his time in north London could be about to come to an end.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly keen on signing the 29-year-old.

Rose has been at Tottenham since joining from boyhood club Leeds in 2007.

He never made a first-team appearance for Leeds but Rose's father would love for that fact to change.

Sky Sports News presenter Jim White has revealed a text message conversation he had with Nigel Rose on Thursday.

He claims Rose senior would love to see his son move back to Elland Road in this transfer window.

“What I can tell you, and it’s quite amusing, I know Nigel Rose, Danny’s dad quite well,” White said.

“Tongue-in-cheek he got in touch with me today and said: ‘Jim I’d love for him to go back to Leeds United, the home of the beautiful game’.

“I’m not too sure that’s going to happen Nigel but you tickled me with that this morning.”

Meanwhile, Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol is surprised Spurs have publicly said Rose can leave the club.

“One other interesting thing about this, one thing that is striking, is Spurs have made this public,” Solhekol said.

“We’re not used to seeing clubs do this, especially Spurs who are a very, very private club and keep their dealings to themselves.

“But they have released this statement that Danny Rose, Georges Nkoudou and Vincent Janssen won’t be travelling because they want to give them extra time to sort out their futures.

“Obviously that sends out a message that they don’t really have a future at the club.”
