Leeds United, Ben White and filling Marcelo Bielsa's defensive void

Updated: 18:55 Thursday 18 July 2019

It won’t be lost on many around these parts over the shift in the centre of Leeds United’s defence this summer.

One player was welcomed with open arms to LS11 while another was shoved unceremoniously through Elland Road’s exit door in haste.

Blurred tales of disruption and financial fair play followed Pontus Jansson as he swapped West Yorkshire for West London, but however the Swede’s departure is perceived there is no question he leaves a hole that needs filling in United’s back four.

Unanswered questions remain over Jansson’s transfer to Brentford, as does the fact over whether Leeds will look to bolster their ranks at the back with a further name.

Taking the window on face value to date, Leeds have swapped a centre-back who was named in last seasons PFA Championship Team of the Year for one who is yet to kick a ball in the division.

Though, Leeds will feel the move runs deeper than that. And you could argue it does. Ben White is an acquisition that fits the Marcelo Bielsa mould. A ball-playing centre-back who can be nurtured to fit into the Argentine’s machine.

White will also pose the argument himself that it is high time he was afforded an opportunity in the second tier after strong stints in League One and Two - a player who has taken everything in his stride thus far. And Leeds, it seems, are the club that convinced him it was Elland Road where that particular goal could be fulfilled.

“I think I’ve got it in me to do it,” White said over filling the void.

“I had a couple of clubs that wanted to take me but Leeds seemed the most interested. We had a meeting in the summer and we discussed what I was looking to do this season and it F***ed with my aims. That’s why I came here.”

It was clear from an early stage that Jansson was no longer welcome at Thorp Arch. But White is a name that has been on the lips of sporting director Victor Orta for some time.

The Poole-born defender caught the Spaniard’s eye during spells with Newport County and Peterborough United, and now he’s brought him north from Brighton to continue his development in what United will be hoping can be their gain.

“It’s difficult to find a centre-back with his quality with the ball,” Orta said earlier this month.

“A professional player is always passing the challenges in his career. I think he’s ready for the challenge [of the Championship] now.

“We are really happy because if for two years you monitor a player, and then for it to happen, it shows the effective work in the scouting department.

“We are really happy because it’s a player that in the end can show in Leeds his brand of football. The most important situation is a proper fit for the style that we are playing and the manager Marcelo Bielsa.”

White has made two outings for United so far at Guiseley and Tadcaster Albion and is part of the group left behind at Thorp Arch away from the club’s pre-season tour of Australia.

Fitness work and a period of acclimatisation to daily requirements under El Loco’s methods were the reasons given for those held back, and it seems the adjustment has helped.

“They’ve been different,” White admitted of his new training regime. “It’s longer days and sleeping between sessions. It’s been very different for me. I’m learning different things everyday.

“It’s been really good though and I’m happy with how it’s going.

“Training is nothing like games so it is nice to get the matches underway. It’s all about getting as many minutes as possible ahead of the season.”

His performances haven’t gone unnoticed, albeit against inferior opposition compared to those he will face in the Championship this season.

A centre-back who was strong on the ball was promised by both club and player and it seems they’ve delivered on exactly that. A display of driving runs, crossfield balls and risk-reward football in the last line of defence has caught the eye.

White appears quiet and unassuming away from the football pitch, but there is a certain swagger to his play that has been clear for all to witness. A confidence born from a belief in his own ability.

“It’s what I do,” he continued.

“I’m quite comfortable on the ball so when I see space I like to drive into it. I’m cool and calm, I like to play out from the back and I want to try and play as many games as I can.

“With more games you are going to keep learning. I’ve now got a few under my belt so it’s time to push on and try and get up the leagues."

The objective is clear regardless of any other incomings; a spot in Bielsa's back four at Ashton Gate when August 4 rolls around.

Club launches Time Capsule initiative

Club launches Time Capsule initiative
A unique opportunity is being offered to primary schools across the city to be a part of Leeds United’s centenary celebrations with an unforgettable prize up for grabs.

Over 20 local schools have already signed up to the special time capsule project which will help mark the 100th birthday of the club in October. Working in partnership with Leeds City Council and the Leeds United Foundation, the club is keen to engage with youngsters in a fun, creative and collaborative way connecting the club’s rich heritage and its role within the city of Leeds over the last 100 years.

Pupils in Year 5 and 6 will be asked to work in small teams to create something entirely unique to showcase a theme or a special part of Leeds United’s history.

The project will start when schools return in September and each school registered to take part will be free to decide how to approach the brief, submitting just one entry into the competition.

The winning school’s entry will be officially unveiled as part of a special commemorative event in October to mark the club’s centenary, with the project being placed into a Centenary Time Capsule in the player’s tunnel, meaning it will become a permanent part of the club.

Councillor Judith Blake CBE is backing the initiative and encouraging schools to be a part of the centenary year for the club, she said: “This is a unique opportunity for primary schools across the city to play their part in Leeds United’s centenary celebrations later this year. Leeds United is a club at the very heart of our city and communities, and it would be fantastic to see as many of our schools and children involved in this initiative as possible.”

Bethan Tidey, Headteacher at Beeston Primary School, has already submitted her school into the project and added: “"I felt honoured to be part of the strategic planning group for the Leeds United Centenary Time Capsule Project. As the closest Primary School to Elland Road Stadium, Beeston Primary School have strong links with the club and the Leeds United Foundation play a big part in our curriculum offer and help deliver high quality P.E. to our children.

“I'm sure that our Y5 children in September will be incredibly motivated to take part in the competition and I know that staff are already planning an exciting unit of work; how great to be able to celebrate a significant event and learn more about our local history at the same time."

The Leeds United Foundation will play an important role in supporting some of the schools they are working in across the city with the project, Nigel Thewlis, Head of Education for the club’s official charity, said: “This is going to be a really exciting project for youngsters and teachers to be involved in and we look forward to hopefully working with some new schools during the campaign.

“I know that this is going to be something that will allow the pupils to be really creative and youngsters will be able to learn new things about the club and the city they live in whilst also developing their teamwork and project management skills.”

If you would like your school to take part in this fantastic project, please register your interest now by clicking here.

Victor Orta's inside line on how Leeds United landed number one target Helder Costa - Leeds Live

Leeds United’s identity under Marcelo Bielsa is the key reason why they were able to snare the likes of Helder Costa away from the top flights of Germany and Portugal.

Director of football Victor Orta admits last summer there were a lot of prospective targets scared of what they may have been walking into, especially before Bielsa arrived.

Orta also said the club’s historical reputation, going back five or 10 years, had continued to play on people’s minds in the transfer market.

Last summer, Matej Vydra and Abel Hernandez were two of the club’s key transfer targets, but neither happened, mainly because of their astronomical wage demands.

Kalvin Phillips and Kemar Roofe will sign new Leeds United contracts - Victor Orta

2019 has been different, though. Costa was the main target and he has been acquired.

“People know us better now,” Orta told LeedsLive. “For me, it’s the principle reason. In respect of last summer, a lot of people were scared about a lot of situations about us.

“Not only in general about the Leeds United project, even situations in the past we need to change.

“Now all the people enjoy the TV watching our football and this is the decision (reason why) Helder Costa prefer join us than prefer perhaps back on loan in Portugal or Germany first division, or another country, because we have now the identity to attract players.

“It’s from head coach and all around the club, chairman and all around the club.”

He added: “We create an atmosphere around the club. In the past all the people wanted to leave Leeds United and now all the people want to go to Leeds United.”

Orta has no known presence on any form of social media. He does not need it, nor does he need hourly criticism pinging onto his smartphone to distract him from the job in hand.

The Spaniard confesses he is an emotional being, admitting the club’s forthcoming Amazon documentary is punctuated by his own tears at least twice every episode.

He likes that emotion in the fans too, though. Fans of a club he considers quite Latin in many ways.

Asked what he made of the critics, Orta said: “It makes me better. It’s good. I like the fans demanding. Again, all the clubs I worked with have been very demanding.

Victor Orta lifts the lid on how Leeds United kept Bielsa, the Costa transfer and promotion plans

“Leeds United is a bit Latin in the way the fans are and I love this because I worked in Sevilla for seven years with passionate fans and this kind of criticism makes me better.

“I like because it’s made me focus to improve myself and analyse all and try to analyse the mistakes and this kind of thing.”

Hadi Sacko has thanked Leeds United fans for their support with a farewell message on Twitter, confirming his departure from the club.

The winger's move to Denizlispor has been reported for some time, as the latest reports suggested the transfer was being delayed by United's demand for a significant fee , but it appears to have finally gone through after the Turkish club announced his signing on Twitter.

Leeds have yet to officially make a statement on the transfer or any fee, although the official account did retweet Sacko's statement.

«My Leeds family..." Sacko posted on Twitter. "It was an honour for me to have played for these colours of this great club.

Del 2:

Victor Orta has discussed Leeds United’s response to last season, how he kept Marcelo Bielsa and the joy of securing his top transfer target in a new interview.

Speaking to gathered media in Perth on Wednesday at Cottesloe Beach Hotel, the Whites ’ director of football cut a relaxed, passionate and motivated figure.

As he said to LUTV in the past, Orta is putting a great amount of value in continuity going into the new campaign.

“We are trying to put great value in the continuity. In football the continuity is a value that you can lose when you try to make immediate changes,” he said.

“The continuity in football can be really successful. This is the reason we decided to continue with the great manager we have and we decided to have continuity with the core of the squad we think can be necessary for us.

Victor Orta is keeping the door open to a Pontus Jansson replacement at Leeds United

“This is our value for the next season, the continuity.”

Marcelo Bielsa’s signature for a second season is widely regarded as the best piece of business the club will do this year if not for the next 10 years.

Orta was asked how key it was to keep the Argentine here and what assurances he made to him in order to secure his tenure.

“He enjoyed Leeds,” said Orta. “He enjoyed the club. He is really happy here. He is really happy in our way of work.

“We are happy on the other side because he improved the club each day. Each day he made me better, personally and professionally.

“When you have people around you who make you better it is good, but the most important is not just me.

“It is the club, and most important are the players. He makes players better. For me, that is the best thing about our head coach.”

Leeds United's Australia tour
Helder Costa’s acquisition, a loan deal followed by an automatic permanent deal in 12 months’ time, is considered to be one of the deals of the summer in the Championship.

How did Orta do the deal and how proud is he of securing such a sought-after talent?

“We had a plan at the start of pre-season in terms of ins and outs. Now, more or less, we are 90 per cent covered in the plan we have,” he said.

He added: “He was our main target and when the director of football can make this happen, I am really happy with the work of all the people involved in the signing of Helder Costa .”

Fans have followed the club everywhere they have gone around Perth in this the first half of the Australia tour.

It has proved yet another reminder of how enormous the club is and why it is so bizarre it is still to return to the top flight.

“This is a Premier League club in all the situations around the club, but we need to be clever,” he said.

“If we analyse, we have failed for 15 years. For so much failure, you cannot make it right in one or two years, you need time.

Watch full interview with Leeds United coach Diego Flores on injuries, Marcelo Biels and defeat to Manchester United

“Obviously, the spirit and the core of the club is Premier League. Only we need to change our league position. This is football.”

And what of Bielsa, the head coach we are still waiting to hear from the first time since May’s misery?

“Marcelo has the same feeling we have: we can get the goal all the people involved with Leeds United want,” said Orta.

“When you are really close to something, you can take two roads. Think about the chance you lost or thinking about the new chance.

“We decided the other road and we are together in that. We can never think about the chance we lost. When you look back, you can’t advance.”

Kalvin Phillips and Kemar Roofe will sign new Leeds United contracts - Victor Orta - Leeds Live

Kalvin Phillips will sign a new contract and remain a Leeds United player for the foreseeable future, in the opinion of director of football Victor Orta.

Orta, who is leading the negotiations with Phillips’s representatives on behalf of the club, is confident, in his own personal opinion, the fans’ favourite will sign a new deal.

Speaking to the media at a fans’ event in Perth’s Cottesloe Beach Hotel, a few hours before Wednesday night’s match with Manchester United, Orta was bullish in his prediction.

Victor Orta lifts the lid on how Leeds United kept Bielsa, the Costa transfer and promotion plans

While the director admitted the only thing he was certain of in life was his own death, he stressed how confident he was Phillips and Kemar Roofe, for that matter, would stay.

Phillips’s current contract expires in 2021, but after playing his way into the Championship Team of the Season last term, he has rich admirers.

A contract offer was made approximately two weeks ago and negotiations continue between the parties.

Asked how the negotiation was progressing, Orta told LeedsLive: “It’s not a negotiation. He is a Leeds United player and will be a Leeds United player for the season 19/20.”

He added: “Leeds United want Kalvin Phillips to stay next year 100 per cent.”

Pushed for his own, personal, take on the situation, rather than the general club stance, Orta said: “Yes, personally, as Victor Orta, I believe [he will sign a new deal].”

And on Roofe?

“The same. Personally, I believe he will stay.”

Another who Orta does not expect to saying farewell to Elland Road anytime soon is the club’s highest earner, Kiko Casilla.

The goalkeeper, acquired for no transfer fee in January from Real Madrid, had a mixed four months in the Championship, ending in more than serious mistake in the play-off semi-final second leg.

However, Casilla is content to stick around and continue in England’s second tier.

“I can say Kiko Casilla prefers to stay in Leeds United than the first division in Spain. And, again, for me, I feel really proud,” said Orta.

One player who is on the verge of exiting Elland Road, however, is Samuel Saiz. The out-of-favour playmaker will stay in Spain.

Victor Orta is keeping the door open to a Pontus Jansson replacement at Leeds United

“He is near to closing a deal in Spain. We are near to closing that situation,” said Orta.

Marcelo Bielsa: Leeds United continue with Argentine's methods

Getty Images Bielsa
Marcelo Bielsa was an animated figure during his side's 4-0 loss against Manchester United in Perth

It was just before 22:00 local time in Perth, Australia, almost an hour after the final whistle had gone in Leeds' 4-0 pre-season defeat by Manchester United, that coach Diego Flores made his way into the media room at the Optus Stadium.

It was confirmed Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa would not be speaking to the media. Instead, the former Argentina and Chile boss would continue his analysis of a difficult night for his team; checking the statistics, watching the video, doing his job the way he feels it has to be done.

It was disappointing not to hear from Bielsa, who agreed to stay at the club for an additional season after making such rapid progress last year.

Yet it was in keeping with how he ran Leeds' entire four-day visit to Perth, giving an insight into the 63-year-old's unconventional methods - methods fans are hoping will take them back to the Premier League in their 100th season.

Blisters and not putting the kids to bed

Bielsa demands a brutal amount from his players. When they returned for the start of pre-season at the end of last month, they were put through sessions so tough it is a wonder they were able to turn up again the following day. No-one complained. This is the Bielsa way.

"Those first two weeks are hard," said skipper Liam Cooper.

"You can have double, triple, four sessions a day. There were hard blisters on my feet. Everything just ached. Sometimes I don't even get to put my little girl to bed at 7pm. This is day after day.

"After last year, the lads' bodies were already accustomed to the work. There are a lot of timed runs. The 'murder ball' game, which is 11 v 11, is really high intensity. Our running stats go through the roof."

Anyone who did not report back on day one, such as new star recruit Helder Costa , remained in Leeds when the rump of the squad flew to Australia on Saturday - they are still in Yorkshire now.

Bielsa was with them until Monday, when he flew to Perth. Leeds staff thought nothing of it when the South American arranged for someone to film Tuesday evening's training session so he could watch it live even though he was on a plane.

"That's normal for Marcelo," said one.

'Staying true to our identity'

Such behaviour was noted last season. It seemed for so long Bielsa would guide Leeds back to the Premier League after a 15-year absence.

They missed out on automatic promotion after picking up just one point from their final four games, before that calamitous play-off semi-final defeat by Derby when Leeds led 2-0 on aggregate a minute from half-time in the second leg, only to concede four times and be eliminated.

There are no wholesale changes though. Bielsa's philosophy remains.

"Last year was our first getting used to the style of play, getting used to the high intensity and the constant pressing," said striker Patrick Bamford.

"People might think he has to change but in the second year we are more acclimatised. We should be able to do it for longer. We shouldn't change our style just because we failed at the last hurdle. You learn from it but you stay true to your identity."

Continuity is key

Leeds also believe there is value in continuity.

It is interesting that one of Bielsa's loan signings, Jack Harrison, is returning for a second spell, the Manchester City midfielder having spent last season at Elland Road. Jack Clarke is another familiar face after Tottenham paid £10m for the teenage winger and then immediately sent him back to West Yorkshire on loan.

"Continuity is our value for next season," Leeds technical director Victor Orta told BBC Sport.

"This is the reason we decided to continue with the great manager we have. We also decided to have continuity with the core of the squad that we think can be necessary for us.

"We are in a high-level performance. Each detail, each millimetre is important."

Evidently this means Bielsa watching training sessions, even though he is not actually present, or analysing pre-season games hours after they have finished.

This attention to detail borders on obsession.

Promotion expectation

At a well-attended question and answer session in Cottesloe, four and a half hours before the Manchester United game, managing director Angus Kinnear said that Leeds did not set targets last year.

However, after the transformation the team had undergone under Bielsa, now there was one - automatic promotion.

"When you are really close to something and you don't get it, you can take two roads," added Orta.

"You can think about the chance you lost, or think about the one in front of you. We have decided on the second one. When you look back, you can't advance.

"Marcelo has the same feeling we have. He believes we can achieve the goal everyone involved in Leeds wants."

Leeds have Inter Milan starlet on radar to replace Jansson

Date published: Thursday 18th July 2019 7:15

 TEAMtalk

Leeds are just one of a host of clubs who are tracking Inter Milan youngster Ryan Nolan, according to a report.

With Pontus Jansson departing for Brentford, Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa is looking for cover for the centre-back and the 20-year-old is on United’s radar.

Pundit Arena report that Brighton & Hove Albion and Leicester City are also keeping tabs on the young centre-back, who is originally from Limerick.

The report claims Nolan is set to leave the Serie A side this summer after four years in Milan, in which time he has graduated to skippering Inter’s U19 side and seen himself called up to the match-day squad for their Europa League clash with Rapid Vienna in February.

He has yet to make his senior debut for Inter, but he impressed with his consistency last season and made 42 appearances for Inter’s youth side.

Capped once for the Republic of Ireland under-18s Nolan, who has one year left on his deal, looks all set to return closer to home after previously playing for Torre Pacheco in Spain.

Benny

No real surprises there tbf Diddles.Huggins & Hudson are ones to keep a very close eye on very talented lads. The lads Lyons & Downing been so unlucky with injuries past year both rated at TA.The 18s & 23s will be very strong again.Exciting times at TA. Love it

Litt merkelig at Joshua Rae satt på benken mot Tadcaster i dag! Han ble released i mai:

Tom Holynski

Got released in the summer. Has been on trial at Blackburn Rovers in pre season. And seemingly now on the bench for us tonight.

Vi hadde vært i Perth i 2-3 dager, mens Scum hadde vært Down Under i godt over en uke!

Ryan Edmondson bagged a hat-trick on Wednesday night as Leeds United secured a 5-1 victory over Tadcaster Albion at the i2i stadium.

The Whites named a strong starting line-up for the pre-season fixture with the majority of those left behind at Thorp Arch - instead making the long trip to Australia - all seeing minutes.

Ben White, Helder Costa, Gjanni Alioski, Jack Clarke and Mateusz Klich all began the evening though while there were notable absences in the form of Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Tyler Roberts, Luke Ayling and Jamie Shackleton.

It was Leeds who started the better of the two sides as they controlled proceedings in the opening exchanges.

Forward Edmondson opened the scoring after just ten minutes with a low shot from inside the box after good work from Clarke down the left.

The winger then turned from provider to goalscorer as he himself got on the scoresheet finishing off a lovely team move with a curling shot into the far corner of the net.

Leeds made it three before the half-time interval as Robbie Gotts linked up with Leif Davis with the former finding the back of the net off the inside of the far post with an inch-perfect shot.

Shortly after the break Albion got themselves on the scoresheet as Davis this time mishit a back pass for trialist goalkeeper Michael Johnstone leaving Jake Day to slot home.

Tadcaster, though, returned the favour after the hour mark as Josh Barnett found Edmondson with his own error who prodded underneath substitute stopper Aaron Burn to bag his second of the night.

The 18-year-old would complete his hat-trick in the closing stages as he bagged United's fifth of the evening as Clarke grabbed another assist from the corner flag.

With ten minutes remaining the floodlights cut out as Albion had seemingly had enough.

United, though, ran out worthy winners on a night that was well worth the much needed minutes for those who hadn't made the trip Down Under.

Leeds United XI: Trialist, Gotts, White, Davis, Alioski (60' Mujica), Jenkins, Klich, Temenuzhkov, Clarke, Costa (60' Struijk), Edmondson. Subs: Rae, Kenneh, Casey.

Tadcaster Albion: Ingham, Barrett, Walters, Healey, Marshall, Milne, Keightley, Mbeka, Day, Stewart, Chimalilo. Subs: Smalling, Burn, Rogerson, Jones, Rollinson, Rose, Mycoe, Hansen.

Vi fulgte kampen live her!

Doesn’t look like Leeds, with half their squad in Australia and not even enough players to fill the bench, are going to beat this top-six Premier League side who have a squad worth near £1bn.

Lufcdata

Leeds were caught offside 8 times today. Ridiculous amount.

Anthony Martial accidentally caught Stuart Dallas in the face. Dallas has got quite a nasty cut. Bielsa having a row with his own medical staff.
