LUFC Mowatt Claims FL Young Player Award

Leeds United midfielder Alex Mowatt has been recognised by the Football League by being named Young Player of the Month for November.

The 19-year-old has been rewarded for a superb month in November when he scored three goals as well as contributing two assists.

Mowatt missed out on the Championship Player of the Month after being named on a shortlist of four for November.

http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2015/02/15/redfearn-produces-not-one-but-two-masterstrokes-with-alex-mowatt/

Redfearn produces not one but two masterstrokes with Alex Mowatt

The Leeds boss got the best out of the 20-year-old against Millwall on Saturday afternoon.

Alex Mowatt has been one of Leeds United's linchpins this season.

Mowatt's form of late, however, had been well below par - as he freely admitted after yesterday's 1-0 win over Millwall.

During that win, though, it was the 20-year-old who struck Leeds' winner (his fifth of the campaign), as the midfielder produced a dominant performance to look like the promising playmaker he is known to be.

And it is perhaps no coincidence that Mowatt had recently been left out of Leeds' side. Redfearn dropped him against Brentford and suggested the move was purely down to tactical reasons.

But the young midfielder has bounced back firing and, no matter what he says, Redfearn knows the rest would have done Mowatt some good before he came back against Reading and then the Lions.

It proved a masterstroke. Simple but effective management - what the 49-year-old is all about. And it wasn't Redfearn's only brilliant move.

As Opta stats show, Mowatt was hugely influential v Ian Holloway's Millwall, completing more final-third passes than anyone bar Sam Byram, taking 66 touches and making more overall passes than any other team-mate.

He did this from the left-hand side, a position the 20-year-old says he's not used to but happy to play in.

SEE ALSO: Derby and Leeds fans react on Twitter to Stephen Warnock's disastrous debut

There, he linked up brilliantly with Charlie Taylor. But the freedom Redfearn allowed Mowatt didn't stop there. Indeed, the Leeds boss spoke delightedly about how Byram and the man down the left frequently swapped wings, confusing Millwall's back line.

Therein lay Redfearn's second Mowatt masterstroke. By allowing the youngster to cover more ground and play with more creativity, he unleashed the star who ultimately won Leeds the game - and ended up the 'best player on the pitch.'

Can Mowatt reach double figures this season?
Tell me - I've got to know
Tell me - Tell me before I go
Does that flame still burn, does that fire still glow
Or has it died out and melted like the snow
Tell me  Tell me

MOWATT MAKES TEAM OF THE WEEK

United midfielder Alex Mowatt has been named in the Sky Bet Team of the Week following his match-winning display in Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Millwall. Mowatt, who celebrated his 20th birthday on Friday, scored the only goal of the game at Elland Road with a curling free-kick on the 39th minute. The Academy product played on the left of midfield and was influential throughout as Neil Redfearn’s side made it four wins from five and back-to-back Championship victories. Redfearn said: "I thought he was the best player on the pitch with his touch and awareness. I thought it was a great free-kick. "These young players are growing all of the time. There’s loads of scope to work with them because they’re talented –they’re young and they’ve got legs."

Leeds United: Mowatt is becoming a free-kick specialist

Alex Mowatt’s left foot is not simply a natural gift. The midfielder hones his free-kicks after every single training session, firing them off up to 30 times a day.

The religious practice is paying off and Mowatt has created his own piece of private territory on the pitch at Elland Road: the right-hand corner of the penalty box directly in front of the Kop.

When Ipswich goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski played Tyrone Mings into trouble on Wednesday, forcing the left-back to foul Sam Byram, the ball was instinctively left to Mowatt. In the perfect position and in his range, the midfielder whipped a curling shot inside Bialkowski’s near post.

It was only start of the end-to-end drama which earned Leeds a 2-1 win but Mowatt’s free-kicks and his long-range strikes are starting to make a name for themselves. A month ago, Millwall’s David Forde was beaten from exactly the same spot, albeit with the help of deflection, and Mowatt’s gradual creep towards the 10-goal mark gained momentum in November with two deadly finishes against Charlton from outside the box.

“I practice free-kicks every day,” the 20-year-old said. “I do about 30 after training. I get the little wall out and keep aiming in my corner so when they come up in that area I fancy myself to score.

“I did it against Millwall and this was basically in the same position. As soon as I saw it was in that area I wanted to get on it and do the same again.

I said at the start of the season when I got my first goal that I want to get 10.
“The keeper (Bialkowski) started a bit more central. He knew, or had maybe seen the other one, but he couldn’t get there. This one was clean, it didn’t get a deflection, and it went in the same corner I keep finding. I was buzzing.”

Scored on 71 minutes, Mowatt was initially unsure if his free-kick had scraped the side-netting and run behind. The strike, however, brought up his seventh goal of the season, moving him closer to double figures.

“I didn’t know until I heard the crowd cheering,” he said. “I didn’t know if he’d got there or if it had hit the side-netting.

“I said at the start of the season when I got my first goal that I want to get 10. That’s still my aim.”

Ipswich equalised within minutes of Mowatt’s strike as a shot from Freddie Sears crept under the body of Marco Silvestri but Billy Sharp reclaimed the lead just as quickly and Silvestri redeemed himself by tipping Daryl Murphy’s late penalty onto a post. Mowatt said: “I was gutted when Ipswich equalised but then Billy goes up and scores. It all happened so quickly.

“They got the penalty but Marco saved us. He does that all the time in training. He saves penalties for fun so it was a matter of time before he did that in a game.”

Neil Redfearn’s squad face more troubled opposition in Wigan Athletic tomorrow, the division’s third-bottom team, and Mowatt said Leeds had a duty to “turn up” after producing a weak display away at Brighton last week.

“I don’t know why it is but we seem to play better against the bigger sides,” Mowatt said. “Wigan are scrapping but we want to get three points.

“We were very poor at Brighton so we need to turn up at Wigan.”

Leeds boss Neil Redfearn on Alex Mowatt’s England withdrawal: He is playing a lot of football and needs rest
By Sam Jordan

Posted on November 17, 2014

image: http://www.squawka.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/4507302.jpg

Leeds United manager Neil Redfearn has revealed why he asked for Alex Mowatt to be withdrawn from England under-20 duty, because the teenager is playing regular first-team football with the Championship club and needed to rest.

Mowatt has been a regular for Leeds this season, starting all six of the games they had during a 22 day period before the international break, becoming one of the brightest young stars in the Championship.

Redfearn was concerned by the 19-year-old’s workload and spoke with England under-21 manager Gareth Southgate and under-20 boss Aidy Boothroyd. He spoke of the “duty of care” managers have to protect teenage players from being overworked whilst they are still developing.

Andy Ritchie: Neil redfearn clearly wants to instil his ethos in Lewis Cook and Alex Mowatt

The 49-year-old, who was caretaker boss at Elland Road earlier in the season before landing the job permanently, has praised the understanding of both Southgate and Boothroyd for allowing Mowatt to drop pout of international duty.

“I spoke to Gareth Southgate as well, having played with him at Crystal Palace and he is someone I know well and I also spoke with Aidy Boothroyd about Alex and said that it would be fine for him to be around the squad for a few days, but then I want him resting,” Redfearn told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“Alex is another one I don’t want playing games because he is another one who is playing a lot of football. We have a duty of care that we should never forget as these players are 17 and 19.

“If we do it right this time, then further down the line, both England and Leeds United will benefit and that is how I look at it.”
