Tenk tilbake i tid ; Henning Berg !

Leeds United did double murderball last week and Diego Llorente came through with flying colours.
Then last night his hamstring went again, prompting Bielsa to voice concern about Llorente’s “state of mind.”
An £18m signing, waiting for a change in luck:

https://theathletic.com/2418967/2021/03/02/llorente-shows-he-can-be-vigilant-and-marauding-centre-back-bielsa-wanted/

On a personal level, he is understood to have settled well in England, a strong and competitive presence in training who, according to sources at Thorp Arch, had the rest of the players sold on him after his first few sessions.

Diego Llorente exclusive part 1 - Spain international reveals Leeds United homework findings and Elland Road 'yearning'
Diego Llorente is ‘yearning’ for the full Leeds United experience at Elland Road.

By Graham Smyth Friday, 5th March 2021, 5:03 pm

The Spanish international defender signed from Real Sociedad last summer and as a global pandemic continues to keep supporters out of stadiums, is yet to play in an atmosphere at LS11.

He’s yet to play much at all, injuries disrupting his debut season with the Premier League club and restricting him to four appearances, two of which came at an empty Elland Road.

The time he’s spent battling back from a series of niggles did allow him to do some homework on the club he joined in an £18m last September.

“One of the things I did when I was injured, because I wanted to really get to know the club from within, was watch the documentary on Amazon,” he said.

“Because I’ve not seen Elland Road full it gave me a real indication of that feeling of passion that exists, with the support here.”

Something else he picked up on is a phrase that encapsulates the Leeds existence, a classic, cheery Yorkshire understatement on the lowest lows and highest highs experienced by those associated with the 101-year-old club. It’s a phrase that could well tell the story of Llorente’s season, if he has indeed put his injury problems behind him.

“There’s one phrase that comes to mind that a few fans I’ve spoken to used,” said Llorente.

“They said ‘sometimes it’s not easy at Leeds but it’s always worth it in the end.’

“I get the impression that fans are willing to go through tough times, almost suffer a little bit if you like, with nerves and what have you, but in the end Leeds always come through.

“What the fans do recognise is that everyone at Leeds works hard and has that desire to give everything to try and win.”

All being well Llorente will get his taste of something more closely resembling a proper Leeds matchday when West Brom visit for the final game of the season and around 9,000 Whites attend thanks to the lifting of some Covid-19 restrictions. He’s already looking beyond that day, to a time when every seat in the house is taken.

“The one thing we can all agree on, the one thing we want is that this pandemic comes to an end and we can all see the stadium full again,” he said.

“I’m absolutely excited and I’m yearning for the day when we can actually experience that passion from the stands.”

Diego Llorente exclusive part 2 - From the 'worst moment' to Leeds United 'liberation' and being surprised by Whites promotion heros
Diego Llorente put both hands to his face in a mix of pain and despair and sank to the St James’ Park turf.

By Graham Smyth Saturday, 6th March 2021, 5:46 am

Just eight minutes had been played of Leeds United’s game against Newcastle United, Llorente’s big comeback from injury.

Luke Ayling delayed a throw in so the centre-half could go down and await treatment from medical staff. Llorente bowed his head as he sat and awaited an outcome that, on the evidence of his body language, was inevitable.

He had looked uncomfortable for the previous few minutes, his right hand flitting to the back of his right leg, his stride a little laboured in a midfield footrace. His race, yet again, was run.

An October groin injury picked up on international duty before he had even played for Leeds, a groin strain sustained in the final minutes of his debut at Chelsea in December and now a hamstring problem on his January return – hardly the introduction to the Premier League he had envisaged.

Marcelo Bielsa patted his defender sympathetically on the shoulder as he passed him in the technical area.

“The night of the Newcastle game was the lowest point of my time at Leeds, the worst moment,” he told the YEP. “It was very tough.

“Obviously I came here with big hopes, really enthusiastic to do well, work hard and to help the team. In football you get these little problems cropping up from time to time, like injuries. You can’t get too down and be too sad.

“I think I’m quite a strong person mentally and I think it helps when you just get your head down and keep working every day in training.

“By the next morning the only thing I had in my head was to start that road to recovery again so I could get back into a position to help out my team-mates. The only thing in my head was to be positive and turn it around and that’s what I did. I started working the next day.”

After the Newcastle game Bielsa expressed his concern for Llorente’s mental state, given the repeated problems he had encountered since an £18m move from Real Sociedad.

“We’re all trying to help him and support him through this injury,” said the head coach a few days later.

Llorente, still acclimatising to a new country, club and colleagues, valued the support.

“It’s true when you go to a new club you have to put your trust in everyone, not just the medical team but the guys you work with every day, the physios, people helping you in your rehab and your daily work,” he said.

“I’ve got nothing but thanks for everyone who helped. It was my team-mates as well. Everyone at Leeds helped me through those tough times and not just on a sporting level but on a personal level. I’m grateful and always will be.”

On February 23 he walked out to play on the Elland Road pitch for the first time since an £18m move from Real Sociedad.

After two false starts, a few nerves would have been forgivable for both player and club.

Llorente, a man with 138 La Liga appearances and six Spain caps, felt none.

“I wasn’t nervous at all,” he said.

“Initially it was a feeling of happiness and almost like a feeling of liberation, like I was freeing myself from those difficult times being injured. When that moment came, when I played those games it was pure joy and happiness.”

He ticked off his first full 90 minutes with the win over Southampton and a narrow, somewhat undeserved defeat to Aston Villa represented another step in the right direction for Llorente.

His performances were good, his defending aggressive and his passing crisp and progressive, taking play deep into the opposition half with drilled, accurate balls to the feet of attackers.

In a team and a system still new to him, playing at a breakneck tempo, he did not look out of place.

“The time spent watching while I was out allowed me to get to know the side, my team-mates, the way we play,” he said. “I learned from it, I was up to speed on the way the team functions by the time I started playing.

“I can assure you, it’s much more intense to play than watch.”

Not all of it was new to Llorente. He first encountered man-to-man marking in his days at Real Madrid’s academy, then again at Rayo Vallecano and most recently at La Real.

“Being aware that Leeds favoured that system as well was one of the things that attracted me to come here and play, I felt my attributes and being used to playing that style meant I would fit in well,” he said.

“I hope you saw in the two games I played that I really enjoyed myself and hopefully you can see I’m used to playing that style, it’s not a case of having to adapt to it too much.”

Out of possession, he fights hard to win it back – his 17 recoveries against Villa set a new 90-minute record for Leeds players under Bielsa.

He’s aiming to replicate the physical effort exemplified by two players who have caught him by surprise with their own English top-flight adaptation.

“One of the most striking things I’ve noticed since I came to the club is the amazing qualities players like Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling have got, given they’ve never played in the Premier League,” he said.

“They’ve taken to it really well. They can run for such a long time and at such a high intensity. It’s something to be admired, something I’m really happy about because it helps the team. I have to try and replicate it myself.”

In possession, he believes he’s a good fit for Bielsaball.

“I can help join in attacks and help start attacks and help the team in offensive play,” he said.

“You always have to take into account the risk-reward thing. If you feel the pass is low in risk and can create something, then I’ll do it.

“If you can make the game easier in the attacking sense without detriment to your defensive duties, it’s something I’ll continue to do in games when it’s the right time.”

The more he plays for Leeds between now and the summer and the more he impresses, the better his chance of making Spain’s European Championships squad will be, though he’s not getting ahead of himself.

“The main thing I’m thinking of, my main objective is to keep learning, taking things day by day and enjoying playing again,” he said.

“I want to help the team in every game I can and I suppose it’s about winning as many games as we can. There’s nothing else on my mind.

“I’d love to be considered for the national team but you have to be aware that there’s lots of competition in all areas but in my position in particular. Of course everyone wants to play for his country, but it’s a tough team to get into. All I can do is concentrate on what’s in my control day to day, working hard.”

A series of niggles put firmly behind him, he’s out to put together a series of performances, step by step. At long last Llorente is off and running at Leeds.

Flotte artikler. Takk for deling Asbjørn.

Diego Llorente

Diego Llorente is yet to play in front of a full house at Elland Road but his eyes widen as he recalls the scenes in Take Us Home: Leeds United showing the famous old stadium at its vociferous best.

The defender, a £20m signing from Real Sociedad in the summer, watched the documentary while recovering from injury earlier this season - "in order to get to know the club a bit more," he tells Sky Sports - and has been pining for fans to return ever since.

"A lot of people recommended it to me and, pfff, the atmosphere the fans created at the games was spectacular," he says. "I'm counting down the days until we can see Elland Road completely full."

Max stake varies. See bet slip for details. Odds subject to fluctuation. Further T&Cs apply. 18+
For now, though, he is just happy to be playing at all.

Llorente was seen as a coup for Leeds. Here was a 27-year-old Spain international who had cut his teeth in Real Madrid's fabled youth academy and just helped Real Sociedad qualify for Europe.

But the excitement that greeted his arrival in West Yorkshire soon made way for frustration as groin and hamstring problems left him watching his new club make the step up to the Premier League from the sidelines in the first half of the campaign.

It was less than ideal for Leeds, who had hoped to build their defence around him in the top flight, and it presented considerable challenges for Llorente too, given he was already having to adapt to his new surroundings in the midst of a pandemic.

"My time here at Leeds didn't start very well but despite the injuries and the many days I felt sad about the situation, the excitement I had when I accepted this challenge was always there. I always had the energy to keep going and recover as quickly as possible.

"One of the things that surprised me most when I arrived was the great group there is here. They are very sociable people who look out for you and that is something I'm very grateful for.

"For me, that was one of the things that helped me most in my recovery - on a mental level as much as a physical one.

"I only have words of gratitude for the staff, the medical team, my team-mates, the sporting director, and the president. In the bad moments I've had, all of them have supported me.

"Now, I try to enjoy every day to the maximum and, when the games arrive, help the team as much as I can."

Llorente, speaking over Zoom ahead of Friday's clash with Fulham, has certainly been doing that lately, starting the last four games and helping Leeds keep clean sheets in two of them. He puts his swift adaption down to the preparation he did while injured.

"One of my main objectives in that period, apart from recovering, was to try to observe and learn as much as possible about the daily routine of the team, the things they work on and the things the manager wants.

"I looked in detail at how we play and analysed it well and that meant that when I did finally come into the team, it wasn't too obvious that I was a new player."

That is not to say the physical intensity of the Premier League didn't surprise him.

"It is totally different to watch the Premier League on television and actually experience it," he says. "You can never imagine how physically demanding it is but once you've realised it on the pitch, you have to adapt rapidly to it to help the team."

Llorente describes Chelsea, who he has faced twice - first as a substitute in a 3-1 loss at Stamford Bridge in December, then from the start in Saturday's goalless draw at Elland Road - as his toughest opponent yet.

"They are so fast," he says, his eyes widening again. "If you have even the slightest lapse of concentration, they will make you pay."

But Chelsea are not the only side to have tested Llorente and his Leeds team-mates lately and the centre-back is also having to adapt to a uniquely demanding manager. There is no easing yourself in under Marcelo Bielsa and there are no half-measures either.

"In the end, I believe that level of demand is what makes a player improve," says Llorente. "At no moment are you allowed to relax or not give 100 per cent.

"He is very demanding with the ball as much as on a physical level. There's not a single minute of the game in which you can't contribute - regardless of the position you play and regardless of whether you have the ball.

"You can always contribute defensively as a centre-back and, if you have the ball, your job is to help with the build-up play. What he asks of us is that we are always useful and that we are always helping the team to improve and achieve victory."

Leeds hope Llorente's belated introduction to the team will improve them defensively and there have certainly been encouraging signs.

Since the 3-0 win over Southampton last month, when he was finally able to establish himself in the team, he ranks top among Leeds players for ball recoveries, clearances and interceptions.

But it is also worth noting that he has completed the most passes too, while only Luke Ayling has had more touches. Bielsa wanted Llorente for his ball-playing ability as well as his defensive qualities.

"It's a part of the game I have liked since I was small," he says. "The primary job of any defender is of course to defend, but football is evolving. Every day it's more important that the ball comes out of defence in a clean and ordered way to connect with the attackers.

"In my first conversations with the manager, he explained the importance of certain aspects of when it's time to play with the ball and when it's time to return to my position [and defend]. There are certain things he considers to be fundamental and I've tried to integrate them into my game as quickly as possible."

Llorente feels he is already improving under Bielsa and admits the opportunity to work with the Argentine was a big part of the attraction of Leeds. But it was a meeting with Victor Orta, the club's sporting director, that convinced him to commit to the move.

"I started the season with Real Sociedad and I was focused on them, but I was also hearing about the possible offers that could arrive and could help me improve as a player.

"There were other offers before Leeds - last year as well - which were also interesting, but they didn't totally appeal to me. The moment I met with Victor and he told me about the interest Leeds had in me, I didn't have to think about it.

"He told me about the project, that it was secure and strong, and about the way the team played, how my characteristics as a player could help, what I could bring to Leeds, and also what Leeds could give me to help me grow as a player.

"When a player sees that, he doesn't have to think twice. And the playing style is more or less similar to what I was used to in Spain, so that was another motive to come here."

Llorente spent three happy years at Real Sociedad, scoring five goals in 82 games and starting a family in the picturesque coastal city of San Sebastian. But he felt the time was right to move on.

"I had some great years in San Sebastian on a personal level. But when you are a footballer, you want to confront every challenge and Leeds is also a very nice city which I will try to get to know more when the Covid situation is better. I consider myself to be an ambitious person and I'm proud to have taken this decision."

The move hasn't done his international prospects any harm either. Llorente has won six caps for Spain and hopes to add to that tally later this month having been included in Luis Enrique's squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Greece, Georgia and Kosovo.

"It's another factor which makes you work hard every day - even when things are bad and everything looks difficult as it did when I arrived here," says Llorente. "In the worst moments, it motivates you to keep going and get picked again to represent your country, which, for me, is the maximum any player can aspire to."

Llorente will hope to keep his place in Spain's squad at this summer's European Championship. But until then his focus is on Leeds - and on making up for the long months he lost to injury earlier in the season. "I'm just going to try to ensure that Leeds improve with me here - and also that I improve with Leeds," he says.

All being well, it might not be too long until he gets to show that improvement to a full house at Elland Road.

'Everything I heard is true' - Spanish Euros hopeful Diego Llorente on Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa and bad habits
Everything Diego Llorente heard about Marcelo Bielsa before arriving at Leeds United was true.

By Graham Smyth Wednesday, 31st March 2021, 5:47 am

The Spanish international did his homework on the club and its world famous head coach, before making the summer move from La Liga side Real Sociedad to Elland Road.

With the European Championships delayed to 2021, it was a big decision for Llorente.

Already ensconced in Bielsa’s set-up and almost guaranteed to play, when fit, was club captain Liam Cooper. He had been joined by up-and-coming German international Robin Koch, who signed from SC Freiburg at the end of August in a move that ended a long pursuit by Leeds director of football Victor Orta.

Beyond the two international centre-halves with their feet under the table was Pascal Struijk, a young prospect who had found favour with Bielsa and was hopeful of playing a few Premier League games in the 2020-21 season.

If Llorente was going to swap the Spanish top tier for its English equivalent, he needed to know that the move was going to be the right one and that his new head coach was going to enhance, not damage, his hopes of representing Spain at a major tournament.

He made a phone call to fellow Spaniard and Leeds attacker Pablo Hernandez, with whom he played at Rayo Vallecano while a pair of loanees in 2015-16, and liked what he heard. And although his debut season in the Premier League got off to a rocky, injury-ravaged start, six months into his stint as a White, Llorente is content that what he heard about the Argentine in charge of Leeds was accurate.

“I had some positive reference to him and everything I had heard is true,” he told Spanish outlet AS.

“He has a very particular methodology and gives a direct preference to the game in each training exercise and is very analytical.”

Bielsa, says Llorente, spots bad habits and makes them clearly visible to his players so they can improve their game.

“He has a knowledge of football that transmits it wonderfully well and I think that at this stage I’m going to improve as a player,” said the defender.

“He usually shows you videos on an individual level to see what you can improve because sometimes we do not realize certain vices that we develop and to improve in returning to position, in pressure or helping the team without the ball. Once you see it you realize it and you try to improve it.”

Llorente’s experience of Bielsa for the first five months of his time at Leeds had been mostly limited to the training ground, so scant was his playing time due to a series of niggling injuries.

But he returned to fitness just in time to start the final five games before the international break and earn a call up to the Spain squad for their trio of March fixtures.

Luis Enrique included the centre-half among his substitutes for the 1-1 World Cup Qualifying draw with Greece but started him in the game against Georgia.

Llorente, on a yellow card from the sixth minute, was withdrawn at the break and replaced by Iñigo Martínez, with Spain a goal down.

Enrique’s men came back to win 2-1 in stoppage time and will hope for a much-improved performance tonight against Kosovo.

Llorente will hope to be involved again, but his efforts to make the Euro dream come true will mainly take place at Thorp Arch and whenever he plays under Bielsa in the final nine Premier League games of the season.

When he signed for Leeds, there were no guarantees of first-team football, promising game time is not how Bielsa operates, so Llorente knew he had to work for it.

A Spain shirt is another thing he won’t be taking for granted. He’ll be returning to Yorkshire with work to do.

“Not giving up and my work at Leeds are the keys to being here [in the Spain squad],” he said. “I think I’m at a good level. I always work, first to help my team, and then with the aim of coming here.

“[The Euros] is the dream and motivation. It is my priority and when I return with my team I have to try to perform at my best to be on the final list, being [here] does not guarantee anything to anyone.”

Diego Llorente: 'I didn’t realise how different Bielsa is in his training'
Leeds defender on his manager’s unusual methodology, how a documentary series helped him to settle and overcoming adversity

Sid Lowe @sidlowe Thu 1 Apr 2021 17.00 BST

It took Diego Llorente 72 days to make his debut for Leeds United and another 52 to reappear. When he finally managed his first start since joining from Real Sociedad four months earlier, he lasted 10 minutes against Newcastle in January. Another month passed before he could begin again, this time for real, 152 days after signing for £18m. He knows; he was counting them. Those were “very tough days”, he says. But, he insists, they weren’t wasted.

Nor were they so unusual for him, a man who knows the virtue of patience. It’s not how it starts that matters; it’s how it finishes. Llorente, a youth product who went 18 months between his first Real Madrid appearance and his second, got his first Spain cap against Bosnia-Herzegovina in May 2016, joining a squad that because of club commitments had no Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Manchester United players. Thirty-five games passed until he got a second, Bosnia again the opponents, this time in November 2018.

Between those matches Llorente was surprisingly called into the squad despite a broken fibula, taking Luis Enrique’s call from his hospital bed. Even though Llorente could not play, the Spain manager insisted that here was a player with “an interesting present and a great future”, one worth waiting for. Besides, he said, “being here with us could be good for him to see the way the selección is, to listen to the team talks and as a stimulus for his recovery.”

Maybe there was a lesson there for when he landed in Leeds. Injured and in lockdown, with Elland Road empty, Llorente reached for his laptop. “I watched the documentary series on Leeds,” he says. “I was curious and, as I couldn’t help the team by playing, what I wanted to do – apart from get fit as quickly as possible – was get to know the club as well as I could. I also analysed what we did, all the details when we played. When I finally came back I didn’t want it to be so obvious that I was the new guy.

“I wanted to know everything related to the club, the atmosphere, the supporters, what’s it like on match days, what the routine is, what are the people working at the club like,” he continues, face occasionally freezing and voice cracking over the Zoom call.

“It was a nice thing to do and watching it brought me closer to Leeds, what it means to play here. I already knew Leeds were a historic club, in the Champions League when I was growing up – there was Jonathan Woodgate, Rio Ferdinand, I remember Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink – and although [since then] they hadn’t been in the Premier League, I was aware of them. But I wanted to know more.

“All that history plays its part when you’re deciding whether to sign. On top of that they were offering me the chance to be part of a stable, ambitious project. I knew I could do things for Leeds and Leeds could do things for me, like give me the chance to play under [Marcelo] Bielsa and play in the Premier League. I’d had offers the summer before from Premier League clubs [and did not go], but this summer we analysed them carefully: their aims, what they saw in me.

“The first thing I did was get Pablo Hernández’s number and call him. People in Spain don’t realise what he means to Leeds: he’s a legend, one of the main reasons they’re in the Premier League. I didn’t just ask him about the team but the city, my teammates, the day to day. And he only had good things to say.

“I knew from him that the club was well run and then when I met with Víctor [Orta, the director of football] and he showed me how Leeds operate, how they work, everything they’d done, I didn’t think twice. It was the style of play I wanted, the club that best fit my qualities, and playing in the Premier League was a dream I’d had since I was small.”

Not that they could fully express what Llorente was about to encounter. Not just with the play – “you can’t even imagine how intense it is, how fast; it’s different watching it on the television and experiencing it for yourself,” he says – but also with the manager.

“To be honest,” the defender admits, “people had spoken to me about Bielsa but until you are actually playing for him you don’t realise just how different he is in so many facets of training. At first, it’s a shock because his methodology is so different. There are certain drills that are very analytical, that describe certain specific moments in games that, because of our style of play, are repeated often. Movements you should be making off the ball, the way you support the free man, the help you give teammates. It’s very specific.

“That methodology is striking compared with the more general approaches you’ve been used to. But when you do these exercises and then you see that in 90 minutes that exact situation is repeated 10 or 20 times, you realise why we work that way. You understand why we do things differently, that every drill has a meaning, and can be directly transferred on to the pitch. You start to understand that, which is when you realise how special he is. You watch the video analysis, individually and as a team, and you can see how it improves the team.”

Even if that means watching from the outside, you learn. Twenty games were missed in person but Llorente missed none of them on tape, analysing every detail, working on how he would fit in. He understands better than most that this too was preparation for when at last he could play. And after 80 minutes coming off the bench in the defeat at Chelsea in December and 10 before limping off against Newcastle in January, he returned in a 3-0 win over Southampton on 23 February, groin and hamstring injuries hopefully finally behind him.

That was the first of five consecutive starts, playing 90 minutes each time and returning to the Spain squad. The wild scorelines of earlier in the season are no more.

“My principal job is to minimise the attacking threat, prevent that danger, and ensure we concede as few goals as possible,” he says. “I can also offer things in terms of bringing the ball out; that’s what the manager wants, why they looked at me. But I think it’s everyone, starting with the forwards, who has improved defensively. Watching them at the start of the season, I knew we were a team that had huge attacking potential. But we are also one that also has to find balance defensively.

“It was a very tough time because as well as the injury I had changed country. That’s a big change and my family had to adapt too. And then I’m not playing. There were some tough days, but my objective was clear: to be a success here. And when you’re driven by a goal like that, nothing else matters. There are always setbacks – life puts obstacles in your path – but you have to overcome those with patience and the knowledge that if you keep working your opportunity will come. That was the way I approached things from the first minute until I could finally make my debut. That’s the approach I’ve always had and always will have throughout my career.”

“Now I’m just looking forward to getting the fans back, which I’m sure will make a difference. Combine their support and our work and that’s the key to being successful. I still haven’t been able to live that first-hand but I’ve seen it in the documentary and I just hope that day comes soon when I can experience it for myself.”

Since Diego Llorente came in against Southampton we’ve accrued 15 points from 9 games, lost just twice, conceded only 7 goals & kept 3 clean sheets. The most we’ve conceded in any of these games is 2 goals, which happened once. His impact has been enormous. #lufc

Leeds United's Diego Llorente set to match four-year milestone and prove point to Marcelo Bielsa
Spanish defender Diego Llorente struggled with injuries throughout the first few months of his Leeds United career

By Joe Donnohue   Leeds United Reporter  15:00, 27 APR 2021

Leeds United could have sworn they were cursed at the beginning of the season when Robin Koch, Diego Llorente, Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi were all injured at the same time.

The quartet of centre-backs found themselves on the treatment table together during December, with injuries varying in severity.

It meant Marcelo Bielsa was forced to field a back three of Luke Ayling, Pascal Struijk and Kalvin Phillips for the visit of Burnley and a pairing consisting of the out-of-position Ayling and inexperienced Struijk versus West Brom.

Despite the muddled defence, Leeds came through both matches with maximum points, picking up two clean sheets as well.

Fortunately, the team were not without their big-hitters at centre-back for too long. Liam Cooper returned shortly thereafter, but is currently serving the last game of a suspension this weekend, while Robin Koch and Berardi have both been named on the bench in recent weeks.

Diego Llorente on the other hand saw his early Leeds career plagued by persistent injuries. Over the past couple of months, starting nine games in succession, it appears he has turned a corner.

Should he start against Brighton and Hove Albion in Leeds' next game, it will be the first time since April 2017 that the Spaniard has made ten consecutive starts in all club competitions.

To the keen-eyed observer, many may cite similar runs in La Liga with Real Sociedad, namely a ten-game stretch between December 2018 and March 2019, and a twelve-match run between October 2019 and January 2020, again in La Liga.

These runs were punctuated by Copa del Rey matches which Llorente did not feature in, which broke his run for consecutive appearances at that time.

This season, due to Leeds having already been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions and no European football to contend with, there have been no 'lesser' games for Llorente to be rested in.

While he may have been omitted for cup games at La Real, Llorente has been unavailable for Leeds' FA Cup and League Cup jaunts this year.

Similarly, the period of the season in which he has built up a head of steam has allowed him to reach the cusp of this milestone. In late April, most teams only have league fixtures remaining, which lessens the load that two games per week can bring, which was sometimes the case for Llorente in Spain.

All caveats aside, a Llorente start versus Brighton would suggest he is the healthiest he has been for some time, with previous injury troubles behind him.

While most first-choice professional footballers miss a handful of games per season, Llorente's record is fairly patchy, which makes the latest run all the more impressive.

In five La Liga campaigns, Llorente played 30 league games or more from a possible 38 just once. On average, he missed 11 league games each season during those five years, split between periods at Rayo Vallecano, Malaga and Real Sociedad.

Frequent muscle injuries have punctuated his career, so to be on the verge of ten consecutive starts for the first time in four years is a personal victory for a player who has become so accustomed to spells on the sidelines.
