Palace spiller vanligvis 442 men prøvde 433 mot Wolves - det var ingen suksess.
Kantene må Leeds utnytte til det fulle, menes det her...
Leeds United shown the route to Crystal Palace victory by WolvesThe Whites will be looking to bounce back from the Leicester loss and Marcelo Bielsa will have done his homework on the EaglesLeeds United face a tricky trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday, but Marcelo Bielsa’s side are not the only team going into the encounter following an underwhelming defeat.
Palace went down to a limp two-goal loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Unusually for Roy Hodgon’s side, they had the lion’s share of possession but were undone by a lack of threat in the final third and defensive vulnerability against the home side’s attack.
As highlighted by Whoscored, the Wolves game brought a divergence in formation from Hodgson. The former England manager had deployed his trusted 4-4-2 formation for each of his side’s first six Premier League games this term, but switched to a 4-3-3 for the trip to Molineux.
Neither James McCarthy nor James McCarthur featured in the match, with Jairo Reidewald and Luka Milivojevic selected in a midfield three alongside Jeffrey Schlupp, who tucked in from his normal left-wing position. Further forward, Andros Townsend made it an attacking trident alongside Michy Batshuayi and Wilfried Zaha.
Palace have won just three of their last 15 Premier League matches stretching back to June, and they have failed to score in eight of those games - more than half.
That’s what prompted the formation shift against Wolves, but it didn’t bring a positive result. Palace were comfortable in possession (they had 55 per cent with a 90 per cent pass success rate) but mustered just two shots on target.
BBC pundit Danny Murphy was particularly critical of the approach and his analysis shows how Leeds can also enjoy success against Hodgson’s side.
“I’ve never seen Roy’s team set up like this, especially in the first half, it was so easy to play against," Murphy said on Match of the Day, in quotes carried by football.london.
"Three narrow up front, three narrow in midfield, space for the wing-backs was ridiculous. They were so easy to play against, it wasn’t a Roy Hodgson performance or a Palace performance.
Leeds United's perfect eventual Marcelo Bielsa successor could be about to become unattainable
“The switch was on constantly, the full-backs couldn’t get out because their back four was playing against Wolves’ front three. It looked compact, they couldn’t get through the middle, it’s fine when you’ve got full-backs high but they couldn’t come out because they were marking the two wingers.
“All the time in the world to play, all the time in the world to make runs. Yes there was quality runs and quality passes but they’re too late, they can’t get back.
"They did get better in the second half but I just couldn’t understand the thought process and the tactical element in what they were trying to do."
Wolves’ success was built on the freedom afforded to wing-backs Nelson Semedo and Rayan Ait-Nouri, who pushed the Palace full-backs back and didn’t allow the visitors to build any meaningful attacks down the flanks.
Width is a key part of Marcelo Bielsa’s system, with Leeds always looking to create overloads down the flanks. Both full-backs push high up the pitch and the two wingers look to combine with them in the final third.
Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling can exploit Palace’s weakness out wide, just as Wolves did. As per Whoscored, Dallas and Ayling have two of the four highest levels of individual performance so far this campaign and will play a vital role in this game.
Leeds United were handed something of a reality check by Leicester City on Monday night as they fell to a 4-1 defeat at Elland Road.
While that loss will stung Marcelo Bielsa and company, it has been an excellent start to the new season and the Whites will be looking to get back on track at Crystal Palace on Saturday.
As well as providing an attacking threat at one end, they - and Leeds in general - must be wary of Palace’s pace in attack, with Zaha and Townsend particularly dangerous when afforded too much space.
Leeds have enjoyed a promising start to the campaign but Monday’s loss to Leicester will have hurt. Palace are a different proposition entirely, and their defeat by Wolves offered plenty of clues as to how best to beat them.
