Leeds United are under new ownership after the English Football League (EFL) approved the sale of the club to 49ers Enterprises.

49ers Enterprises taking full control of Leeds brings to an end Andrea Radrizzani’s time at Elland Road, where he has been the majority shareholder since 2017.

The two sides publicly announced a deal in June, allowing 49ers Enterprises to begin the process of officially ratifying its long-awaited buy-out.



Paraag Marathe, previously vice chairman and board member of the, will take over as club chairman.

Rudy Cline-Thomas will join the board as co-owner and vice-chair and Angus Kinnear remains as CEO.

“This is an important moment for Leeds United and we are already hard at work,” said Marathe. “This transition is a necessary reset to chart a new course for the club.

“We have already appointed a highly-respected first team manager with a track record of success, and we are confident Leeds will field a competitive squad to contend for promotion next season. It’s a privilege to carry this torch as I know we have a responsibility to ensure this club makes our staff, players, supporters, and the Leeds and Yorkshire communities proud.”

49ers Enterprises is the investment arm of NFL franchise San Francisco 49ers and the consortium taking charge of Leeds consists of around 10 major investors, with numerous smaller parties also committed in a more minor capacity.

On the playing side, Daniel Farke was appointed as the club’s new manager earlier this month to replace Sam Allardyce, who departed at the end of the 2022-23 season.



In early May, director of football Victor Orta left with outgoing Tottenham Hotspur performance director Gretar Steinsson set to be named in a senior recruitment role at Elland Road.

Leeds finished 19th in the Premier League and were relegated to the Championship, with Jesse March, Javi Gracia and Allardyce all unable to get a tune out of the squad.

Radrizzani brought 49ers Enterprises in as a 10 per cent shareholder in 2018 and the US group’s stake in Leeds rose to 37 per cent and then to 44 per cent by the end of 2021.



49ers Enterprises initially secured an option to buy Leeds in full in January 2024 in a deal that would have valued the club at around £500million ($623m).

The group, however, was forced to negotiate a lower price and strike a fresh agreement with Radrizzani following relegation from the Premier League.

Its 100 per cent buy-out values United at around £170m.

The Whites are officially under new ownership, six weeks on from news that an agreement had been reached between the 49ers and Radrizzani’s Aser Ventures.

A transfer of shares has taken place with Radrizzani’s remaining 56 per cent holding in the club now under the control of Paraag Marathe and his core group of ten-or-so investors involved with 49ers Enterprises.



The 49ers’ investment group is made up by a number of backers, but only key players have been subject to checks by the EFL, including incoming chairman Marathe, who has held a position on Leeds’ board for the past few years.

MASTRY Ventures founder Rudy Cline-Thomas has been appointed to the board of directors as co-owner and vice chairman, while chief executive Angus Kinnear remains in his post.

US golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas were named among the minority shareholders earlier this month, while NBA stars Russell Westbrook and Larry Nance Jr. are also involved in an investment capacity.

A statement on Thursday evening read: “Today, Leeds United Football Club can announce that the EFL has approved the sale of the Club to 49ers Enterprises, paving the way for the immediate transition of ownership.”

Chairman Marathe said: “This is an important moment for Leeds United and we are already hard at work.

“This transition is a necessary reset to chart a new course for the Club. We have already appointed a highly-respected First Team Manager with a track record of success, and we are confident Leeds will field a competitive squad to contend for promotion next season. It’s a privilege to carry this torch as I know we have a responsibility to ensure this Club makes our staff, players, supporters, and the Leeds and Yorkshire communities proud."

“It has been an honour to guide Leeds United over the last six years and to spend so much time with the best fanbase in the world,” outgoing chairman Radrizzani said.

"49ers Enterprises have been fantastic partners for years and I'm confident they will take Leeds to the next level.”

Leeds are expected to press on with first-team signings and further staff additions ahead of the new season having now been granted EFL approval.

Nå er eierskapet endelig avklart ! selv om vi Leeds United supportere har vært utålmodige siden Radrizzani annonserte at han hadde solgt klubben til 49ers. Og det tok så lang tid i våre øyne , med artikkler opp og ned og konspirasjoner blant norske og engelske fans til tider. Jeg tror 49ers  og de andre eierene 60 av dem i tallet !?, har jobbet som fy , i bakgrunnen i påvente av avklaring rundt eierskapet. Først ble Farke utnevnt til manager , og har helt sikkert en liste på spillere han vil ha inn på laget før sesongstart, noen av de gamle er vel med videre , og de som har vært på utlån , har både PL og Championship spill erfaringer nå. Leeds United have appointed a technical director and made a major internal promotion as part of a major restructure of their football operation.

Chairman Paraag Marathe and CEO Angus Kinnear have been carrying out a review of the club's football departments in the interim period between a takeover deal being agreed and the EFL giving it the green light.

The new face at Elland Road is Gretar Steinsson, the 41-year-old ex-Bolton Wanderers defender. He has been appointed as technical director so will oversee the club's football strategy. Leeds parted company with director of football Victor Orta late last season when the Spaniard and the board failed to see eye to eye over the decision to sack Javi Gracia and replace him with Sam Allardyce.




Nick Hammond, who had already been hired for a three-month stint as interim football adviser to take care of the transfer window, will continue to take the lead when it comes to player trading. Leeds chiefs are pleased with how the ex-Celtic and Newcastle consultant has handled a challenging window thus far and it remains a possibility that Hammond could stay involved with the club beyond his current contract.


Adam Underwood, who was previously academy operations manager, will be promoted to the role of football operations manager, running much of life at Thorp Arch, including team travel and working in conjunction with the coaching and medical staff.

Rob Price continues in his role as head of medicine and performance and Hannah Cox, based at Elland Road, remains head of football administration, taking care of player contracts and transfer legalities.

Kinnear said: “We welcome Gretar to Leeds, we believe he will be a fantastic part of a new look team, which has been assembled to support Daniel as we look to rebuild. Gretar, alongside the rest of the group, will manage the football department during this critical period.”

As for the club's new owners, who officially took control on Monday night upon receipt of EFL approval for their takeover, decision-making power will rest solely with the board, which for now comprises Marathe, Kinnear, new vice chairman Rudy Cline-Thomas who is one of the biggest investors in 49ers Enterprises and fellow major player Peter Lowy.


49ers Enterprises, who bought Andrea Radrizzani's 56 per cent shareholding to assume full ownership, is an investment vehicle that has brought together a number of wealthy individuals from the worlds of business and sport. The opportunity to invest in Leeds has attracted some of the biggest names in American sport, from the NBA to the NFL, NHL and golf but perhaps the name that stood out most of all on Monday night was the world's most decorated Olympian Michael Phelps.

Even if the board will be ultimately responsible for deciding the club's direction of travel, investors will be involved in discussions regarding various aspects of life at Elland Road and Marathe has already shown an eagerness to lean on a number of the financial backers for their expertise in respective fields.

Michael Schwimer, a former Major League Baseball pitcher, is the founder and CEO of Big League Advantage. The 37-year-old announced on Monday night that Phelps, golf superstars Jordan Speith and Justin Thomas, NBA basketballer Larry Nance, former Jacksonville Jaguars NFL linebacker Myles Jack, ex- University of Arizona basketball player TJ McConnell and NHL stars Erik Johnson and Gabriel Landeskog had put money into Leeds in partnership with his company.

But Big League Advantage and other investors are not just throwing cash behind the new regime. Schwimer's firm, which uses sports analytics and algorithms to invest in athletes, has already provided help with data at Leeds this summer. Schwimer has sent some of his people to explore ways in which they can further support the work going on to build a squad worthy of promotion for Daniel Farke. 49ers Enterprises have also installed some senior members of staff at Elland Road and significant growth in both the head count and the general operation at the stadium is expected before long.

Har ikke hatt tiden til å sette meg inn i det. (Fleste svarene tilhører vel fremtiden), men: Er tanken bak å «flippe» kjøpet av klubben ila noen år? Er det å bygge en franchise innen sportsindustrien på tvers av konitinenter?  Eller er man inne i det for et lengre  tidsperspektiv? Med det så forstår jeg jo at det er underholdning og et stort kommersielt og økonomisk utbytte, men spørsmålet går kanskje mer hva det gjør med identiteten og verdiene klubben står for.
Hva er planen for disse mindre investorene bla?
Har de vært inne på strategi vedr infrastruktur o,l?
Man har jo fått smådrypp vedr spillerlogistikk og modell, men i det lange løp er jo det ikke så interessant med en såpass tung aktør som disse.. i mitt hodet.

Jeg er i utgangspunktet veldig positiv til dette eierskapet. Det virker langt mer solid og tungt enn det vi tidligere har hatt, men har ikke alkurat dypdykket ned i det.

Jeg har jo lest om noe av det du spør om her, søkte litt i The Athletic nå og de har skrevet en hel del om 49'ers og deres menn men jeg fant ikke noe konkret å sitere de på nå.

Kort sagt har jeg vel lest at dette er et investeringsprosjekt, de er inne i et halvlangt perspektiv og håper på god profitt. Det er jo mange amerikanske eiere i PL nå så de har nok sett sidelengs på de.

Samtidig er jo mange av små-investorene Leedsfans eller med Leeds-tilknytning, samt ikke minst en av stor-aktørene, Lowy-familien... De er nok også inne med hjertet.

Farke ønsker å være langt mer (tidligere) involvert mht overganger enn siste tids 'head coacher', derav tittelen 'manager' som han insisterte på.

I øyeblikket er styret virkelig fåtallig. Det er nok ikke usannsynlig at flere  vil komme til (f.eks noen fra York-familien),
