On This Day: In 1976, 32-year-old Norman Hunter made his 726th and final appearance for Leeds in a 3-1 win over West Ham at Upton Park.
He joined Leeds in 1958 at the age of 15, and the Gateshead-born defender made his first team debut at the age of 18 before going on to win 8 club honours over 15 seasons. He clocked up a total of 540 league appearances and 78 across European club competitions.
'Bites Yer Legs' won the Leeds' Player of the Year award in 1971 and picked up the PFA Players' Player of the Year in 1973/74 and was included in the PFA Team of the Year the same year.
Hunter was part of the 1966 and 1970 World Cup squads for England, and won a total of 28 international caps at Leeds between 1965 and 1974, a feat bettered only by Jack Charlton (35).
Don Revie reserved the highest praise for Norman Hunter in 1975: "One man could always be counted on to battle it out until the final whistle. That man is Norman Hunter... one of the greatest players ever to have lived."
A Leeds United legend.
