But captain Alan Thompson is almost ready to return to United's squad after completing a session of full training yesterday.

Da begyner vi å få tilbake noen i hvert fall...  :)

Ankergren
Frazer - Rui - Huntington - Parker
Weston - Prutton - Howson - Da Costa
Beckford - Constantine

(Runde 3)
Millwall  -  Walsall  2 - 1

(Runde 4)
Telford United  -  Millwall  0 - 2

(Runde 5)
Millwall  -  Burnley  1 - 0

(Kvartfinale)
Millwall  -  Tranmere Rovers  0 - 0
 (Omkamp - Kvartfinale)
Tranmere Rovers  -  Millwall  1 - 2

(Semifinale)
Sunderland  -  Millwall  0 - 1

Rise and fall of two clubs over the past seven seasons

WHEN Hereford United and Leeds United meet at Edgar Street in the FA Cup first round tomorrow (Friday) evening, it will be a measure of how far the respective sides have fallen and climbed inside the last seven seasons.

On May 2, 2001, Leeds, with a side featuring Nigel Martyn, Danny Mills, Rio Ferdinand, Lee Bowyer, David Batty, Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka and Alan Smith, were held 0-0 at Elland Road in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

United, on the other hand, had, the previous evening ended Yeovil Town's hopes of winning the Nationwide Conference title by winning 3-2 at Huish Park.

advertisement
Goals from Rob Elmes, John Snape and a late winner from Ian Rodgerson ensured that United would end what had been a disappointing season in 11th place in the table.

Leeds, who lost the second leg 3-0 in Valencia, went on to finish fourth in the Premiership as part of a run of five successive top-five finishes in the top flight.

Their descent began with relegation from the Premiership at the end of the 2003-4 season, followed by a further drop from the Championship at the end of last season.

This will be the Yorkshire club's first foray into the first round of the FA Cup, familiar territory for the Bulls who have figured at this stage of the competition for all but three of the last 53 seasons, twice when they failed in the qualifying competition and once when they moved automatically into the third round as a Division 2 (now Championship) club in 1976-7.

Leeds up among the game’s giants

WHILE Leeds United are not currently up among the game's Premier League giants, there is little doubt that the Yorkshire side are one of the biggest clubs ever to visit Edgar Street.
Within relatively recent memory, the Bulls have hosted Newcastle United, West Ham United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City in FA Cup ties while all were playing in the top flight of English football.
But Leeds, who have won Division 1 on three occasions - most recently in 1991-2, the FA Cup once and the Football League Cup once as well as garnering various European honours, can boast as distinguished a history as most previous visitors.
Their recent past has, however, been dogged by financial problems which have seen the Elland Road club tumble out of the Premiership, through the Championship and into League 1.
Their opening form this season, however, would appear to indicate that, under the management of Dennis Wise, they are on the way back.
Entering administration saw the Yorkshire side start the season with a 15-point penalty but that was quickly swept aside as they began the campaign with a flurry of victories which sees them currently in seventh place and on the fringe of the play-offs.
Without the penalty, they would be 10 points clear at the top of the table.
Their recent programme has been far from easy, however, with the necessity to travel from top to bottom of the country inside the last week hardly helping their cause.
Last Saturday, Leeds travelled to Carlisle where they suffered their first defeat of the season against the League 1 leaders.
Then, they had to make the long journey to Bournemouth for Tuesday night's clash with the struggling Dorset club and bounced back to form with a 3-1 success.
On the scoresheet was ex-Bournemouth player Tresor Kandol who scored twice against his former club.
Kandol is one of the few Leeds players with some experience of playing at Edgar Street, albeit very briefly.
Following his release from Bournemouth at the end of the 2001-2 season, Kandol played in a pre-season friendly for the Bulls at the start of the following campaign but interest was not pursued after he was withdrawn at half-time on his only appearance.
He went on to rebuild his career in the Conference with Thurrock and Dagenham & Redbridge before re-entering league football with Barnet.
He subsequently moved to Elland Road for a £200,00 fee and has scored eight times this season.
Leeds skipper, Alan Thompson, who will be leading the club into the FA Cup first round for the first time in their history, told the club website: "It's a tricky tie but it's one we are looking forward to.
"It'll be a tight ground and I'm sure they'll be up for it, but we'll have our usual good support behind us."
Hereford will be going into the tie on the back of two important wins.
"It was important that we got six points from six from the two league games in the last week," said Hereford director of football Graham Turner. "We can now look forward to Leeds with a bit of confidence from the two wins and a nothing-to-lose sort of attitude."

The Bulls had reported no new injury problems after Tuesday's victory over Mansfield but will not be able to call upon the services of full-back Trent McClenahan who has returned to Australia following a bereavement.
Richard Rose is likely to continue at right-back.
The Bulls will also have the option of recalling experienced striker Steve Guinan who is again available for selection after completing a three-game suspension.

Big John is a double legend

JOHN Charles, who played a significant part in building the team which pulled off Hereford United's greatest giantkilling act against Newcastle United, can rightly be described as a legend by both Leeds and the Bulls.
Swansea-born Charles, who is regarded as the greatest ever Wales player, was signed by Leeds as a centre-half but cemented his reputation when moved into the attack.
He scored 42 goals in the 1953-4 season, scoring a then club record of 154 times in 308 matches in two spells, from 1948-57 and in 1962.
As first a player and then player-manager at Edgar Street, Charles retained his astonishing ability to find the net for United, hammering in 130 goals in 243 appearances from 1966-1971.

Wise - will make changes

WISE PLANS CHANGES

Leeds boss Dennis Wise will shuffle his pack as he plans to give several of his fringe players an opportunity in the FA Cup match at Hereford.
United will be without Radostin Kishishev as the Bulgarian midfielder continues to battle with a niggling muscle tear.
Former Celtic midfielder Alan Thompson has returned to training this week but will not make the trip to Edgar Street while Andy Hughes is also struggling with a knock and will not be risked.
That leaves the gate wide open for players such as Paul Huntington and Filipe Da Costa to make an impression on boss Wise as they seek to stake their claims for a first-team berth.
First-choice strike duo Tresor Kandol and Jermaine Beckford are likely to be rested with Leon Constantine expected to be given a rare start.

Hereford boss Graham Turner is likely to field the same side that beat Mansfield 2-1 in midweek.
Turner does have striker Steve Guinan available again after he served the last of his three-match ban during Tuesday's victory but the United boss is likely to stick with the strike pairing of Trevor Benjamin and Theo Robinson after they contributed to the Bulls scoring seven goals in their last two games.
Young Liverpool loanee Robbie Threlfall is set to continue at centre-back after impressing during his two starts but fellow defender Dean Beckwith remains sidelined with a broken jaw despite returning to light training this week.
Karl Broadhurst returned to the starting line-up against Mansfield after completing his one-match ban and is likely to continue alongside Threlfall against Dennis Wise's side.

Bassett in the hot-seat for Leeds

DAVE BASSETT will be giving the orders from the touchline Friday night as Leeds United enter unknown terrority in the FA Cup.
The former Sheffield United and Wimbledon manager, who replaced Gus Poyet as Leeds' assistant-manager last week, will be thrust into the spotlight because manager Dennis Wise is serving a three match touchline ban.
Leeds are involved in the first round of the competition for the first time in 82 years, due to their League One status, and are also playing Hereford United for the first time.
League Two promotion chasers Hereford only returned to the Football League last season after a nine year absence but pulled off one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history 35 years ago when a goal from Ronnie Radford helped beat Newcastle United at Edgar Street.
Ironically, Leeds would go on to lift the FA Cup in that 1971-72 season, beating Arsenal 1-0 in the final at Wembley.
Wise, who will keep in touch with Bassett via radio-link from the stands, admits that progress in the FA Cup this season is important to the club's finances - a draw against a Premiership club at the third round stage can bring a major cash windfall.
"It's an important cup for us, it's a money spinner," said Wise, whose side were knocked out in the third round stage by West Bromwich Albion last season. "If you get in the third round and get a big club, that's an incentive."
United captain Alan Thompson is back in contention for the trip to Hereford.
The midfielder may deputise for Andrew Hughes who is again struggling with a groin problem.
However, Leeds are still without loan signing Radostin Kishishev and veteran striker Tore Andre Flo due to injuries.
"It's an opportunity for one or two players to come in and show what they are capable of. It'll be a difficult place to go, and we're on TV. It's important we show people what we are about," added Wise.

Last six games: Hereford DDLDDW, Leeds WDWWLW.
Last time: No previous meeting
Referee: A Bates (Staffordshire)

Sky Bet odds: Hereford 4/1; Draw 12/5; Leeds 8/13.

Hereford in Bullish Mood: ‘Let Leeds worry about us’

The Hereford United management team appear confident of causing an upset as they prepare to face Leeds United in what is the Whites debut appearance in the first round of the FA Cup at Edgar Street tomorrow evening. Prior to the clash, which has been selected for live TV coverage, Bulls Head Coach John Trewick declared ‘I’m sure Leeds think they are a big club, and they fancy their chances. Let them worry about us, we’ve just got to take them on.’
Manager Graham Turner added: ‘We realize the size of the club, but we bear in mind that they are only in the first division, and we try to keep the perspective on that. If we can perform well and have a little bit of luck, then we’re capable of beating them.’
Leeds boss Dennis Wise is clearly not taking Hereford lightly. ‘Hereford will be a difficult game, we know that. It will be tough because they are going well, they won 5-1 last weekend and won again on Tuesday, and they will cause us problems. But we are looking forward to it.’ Let the battle commence.

Bulls expected to stay the same

Hereford boss Graham Turner is likely to field an unchanged side as his team prepare for Friday's FA Cup first-round clash at home to Leeds.
Turner does have striker Steve Guinan available again after he served the last of his three-match ban during Tuesday's 2-1 League Two victory over Mansfield but the United boss is likely to stick with the strike pairing of Trevor Benjamin and Theo Robinson after they contributed to the Bulls scoring seven goals in their last two games.

Dennis Wise is ready to entrust the frontline care of Leeds United to assistant boss Dave Bassett as he begins his three-match touchline suspension.

Basset watched from the stands during United's 3-1 victory over Bournemouth on Tuesday night, but the Elland Road number two is preparing to take control of the dug-out for the first time at Hereford tomorrow evening.

Wise will begin his FA punishment as Leeds launch their FA Cup campaign with a first-round tie at Edgar Street, and he will not be free to return to the touchline until United travel to Cheltenham Town on November 25.

The 40-year-old is bearing the cost of comments made to London referee Danny McDermid at half-time of September's 1-1 draw between Leeds and Gillingham, but the rapid acquisition of Bassett and first-team coach John Gannon has averted the potential personnel crisis created by ex-assistant Gustavo Poyet's departure to Spurs.

Wise's absence from the dug-out will run through only one league fixture - next weekend's clash with Swindon Town, which is also the final fame of his ban - and United's boss insisted he was passing the baton to safe a pair of hands in Bassett.

Wise said: "I slung him in the stand (against Bournemouth) and it's good to have him up there because he sometimes sees games slightly differently to me.

"I've got three matches coming up and now I'm going to be up there, so I wanted to spend a bit of time with the lads.

"We'll chop and change this year - sometimes I'll go up there and he'll come down. When you've got an older head upstairs, it
helps."

Wise is weighing up potential changes for tomorrow night's game after revealing that captain Alan Thompson is back in full training, and that he may turn to handful of the players who have so far failed to break into his regular starting side this season.

United's manager admitted midfielder Andrew Hughes, who returned from a groin strain against Carlisle on Saturday, was suffering slightly after Tuesday's victory, but Leeds appear to have avoided any new injury concerns ahead of their third match in six days.

Wise said: "Hughes is a bit sore but apart from that everyone is fine.

"Alan Thompson has trained but he has been out for quite a while I'll have to wait and see. I'll have a chat with him and see how the other lads are looking.

"There are a couple that have played a lot of games, and maybe it would do them the world of good to have a slight rest."
