The 52-year-old held further talks with the Championship club's owners, GFH Capital, on Thursday, paving the way for an agreement to be reached before Saturday's crucial Yorkshire derby against Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road.
McDermott had made it clear that he was keen to return to management after his sacking at Reading last month. He enjoyed great success at Reading, where he took the club to the Championship play-off-final in his first full season in charge and won promotion as champions 12 months later.
Although Reading were second from bottom in the Premier League when McDermott was dismissed by Anton Zingarevich, the club's Russian owner, the decision was viewed by many as harsh. Sir John Madejski, the Reading chairman, admitted this week that he would have kept McDermott.
At Elland Road, McDermott will supplant Neil Warnock, who left the club 11 days ago, following a 2-1 home defeat against Derby, the third of four successive losses Leeds have suffered. That run has brought an end to outside hopes of making the play-offs and left Leeds only five points above the bottom three with five games remaining.
