It’s about time we beat Barnsley away…Posted by LeedsAllOver
Leeds head over to Oakwell for the Yorkshire derby on the back of a much-needed morale boosting 2-0 victory over Blackpool at the weekend. Following a torrid run of form which has seen the whites plummet from play off contention at Christmas to nervously looking over our shoulders until the weekend after finally easing the tension.
Leeds team news
It’s quite difficult to sit and predict what Brian McDermott will do with his teams and who will play where but it’s likely the team will remain the same as the previous weekend. Luke Murphy stepped up and Michael Brown rolled back the years with a vintage defensive midfield display. Jimmy Kebe is still doubtful for the game whilst Rodolph Austin is back in-contention after Tonge picked up a knock. With nothing to play for as a team this season, individually the players have their futures to play for, with Massimo Cellino likely to make big changes during the summer.
Barnsley team news
Barnsley’s survival hopes are just about alive, by the skin of their teeth. Following a 2-1 victory over relegation rivals Charlton have given them a boost. Jack Hunt is the only injury doubt for Barnsley, and with four games left to play and two being games from sides in the top 4, Barnsley will see Saturday’s game as a must win game.
Previous meetings:
The last ten games provide grim reading for Leeds fans when we look at our record at Oakwell, which stretch back to the 1987/88 season, suggesting how little we have met in recent years.
1987/88 Barnsley 1-1 Leeds
1988/89 Barnsley 2-2 Leeds
1989/90 Barnsley 1-2 Leeds Full Members Cup
1989/90 Barnsley 1-0 Leeds
1990/91 Barnsley 1-1 Leeds FA Cup
1997/98 Barnsley 2-3 Leeds 2006/07 Barnsley 3-2 Leeds
2010/11 Barnsley 5-2 Leeds
2011/12 Barnsley 4-1 Leeds
2012/13 Barnsley 2-0 Leeds
The last time we beat Barnsley at Oakwell was in the 1997/98 season when we were 2-0 down in that game which produced another great comeback following on two previous comebacks against West Ham and Derby respectively. Alfie Haaland, Rod Wallace and Derek Lilley scored the goals to give Leeds all 3 points. In the last 3 seasons, we have been handed some real batterings by Barnsley, the 5-2 was horrendous, we were actually 1-0 up after two minutes following a Johnny Howson goal but the rest, as they say, is history. The 4-1 defeat in 2011 was the beginning of the end for Simon Grayson. Although, I still hold that as the worst display I have ever seen from a Leeds United team.
This game however, it’s much different, and we really, really owe them one. If we do beat Barnsley this weekend then that will virtually relegate them, which, for me, would be some decent revenge following the good hidings they have given us recently.
Prediction
I actually do fancy us to win this game and I’m going for 3-1 and I fancy McCormack and Smith to get on the score sheet. The other goal? Probably a McCormack double.
Let us know your predictions and what team you would play in this game, it’s always good to hear your views.
