Det florerer med Austin-blogger i LUFC-kretser for tiden, og kommentarer om hans captaincy.
Vi begynner med YEP, lokalavisen http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/sport/leeds-united/latest-whites-news/team-is-everything-for-leeds-united-s-captain-1-5946517Team is everything for Leeds United’s captainNew Leeds skipper Rudy Austin says it doesn’t matter who wears the armband if all 11 players perform as captains. Lee Sobot reports.
Rodolph Austin followed his first outing as Leeds United captain with his first captain’s ‘press conference’. He might find it’s the first of many.
But that won’t be a problem for the ice-cool Jamaican who conducted himself in likable fashion in front of the expectant media.
It rounded off quite a weekend for Leeds United’s man of the match who says he will remain his hard-working self whilst being “honoured†to hold the Leeds United captaincy.
If Sunday’s display against Leicester is anything to go by – both on and off the pitch – the Jamaican will be just fine.
Austin, 28, was always in for a big weekend at Leicester with the fixture marking the end of the combative midfielder’s three-match suspension picked up for a red card against Brighton at the back end of last season.
And not only was Austin thrust straight back into the starting line-up in place of Michael Tonge, but also with the honour of wearing the captain’s armband to boot.
The midfielder has evidently impressed new boss Brian McDermott who has described his tough tackling midfielder as “a special person†who trains “every day like it’s his lastâ€.
And, even with the added responsibilty of the Leeds United captaincy, Austin has vowed to continue in the same vein with the Whites favourite honoured and not overawed to be handed the captaincy.
Austin – signed from Norwegian outfit SK Brann last summer – admits he never considered he would be Leeds United’s new skipper 13 months later, the six-foot star having succeeded previous incumbent, defender Lee Peltier in the role.
But the Jamaican international says he will feel proud and not pressured to wear the armband with the midfield general promising commitment to the Whites cause in abundance from both himself and those around him.
“When I signed here I didn’t know I would become the captain and it’s a big honour,†Austin told the YEP.
“I will try my best to do a good job and help the boys.
“But I don’t feel any extra pressure and I’m the type of person where I don’t put extra pressure on myself.
“Before the game or after the game – I just have to do what I do best.
“I just have to do my job, the same as the other players have to do theirs.
“I came to this club to play my football – that’s what I do for a living and that’s what I do to help back the team and get really behind them.
“As I’ve said before, it doesn’t matter who is the captain.
“It’s all about the team, there are no individuals.
“If there’s 11 of us out there having a captain’s mentality it will be a very good team.â€
United certainly showed one aspect of being that very good team on Sunday in their goalless draw at Leicester City.
Defensively, the Whites were hard to criticise.
At the heart of that unit – protecting the back four – was that man Austin.
There is no denying the Jamaican’s calming and re-assuring influence with Austin keen to stress that he will be a captain to encourage others.
Austin – raised in the Clarendon Parish of Jamaica – says he will never be one to rant and rave, but a commanding presence whose more softly spoken words will speak volumes.
“Sometimes you don’t have to shout,†he said.
“Sometimes you can just tell someone that they should go there or they should do that.
“You don’t have to raise your voice all the time.
“I’m that type of person where I don’t like to put down someone.
“I just like to encourage – whether you do bad or do good.
“You are still learning.â€
As too are Leeds United under McDermott who will take charge of his ninth competitive outing when the Whites welcome South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday to Elland Road on Saturday.
Already McDermott is building up an impressive record with the Whites having won five, drawn one and lost just two – against Brighton and Birmingham – under his tenure.
Yet both of those defeats came at the back end of last season and 2013-14 – McDermott’s first full season at the helm at Elland Road – is clearly the one that matters.
Austin has now been unveiled as the former Reading manager’s new captain with Austin declaring himself satisfied with United’s start to the campaign.
“It’s been a very good start to the season,†said Austin.
“We just have to keep delivering all the time and I hope that we can keep getting more and more points to give ourselves the best chance of succeeding.â€
With Austin at the helm, there is every chance that United’s points haul will be plentiful with the midfielder’s best also yet to come.
Making his first appearance of the season, the Jamaican says he was struggling with cramp towards the end of Sunday’s success at Leicester – not that you could tell.
Typical of his commitment, the six-foot star soldiered on manfully to the end.
But it means even better can be expected from United’s energetic ace in the fixtures that follow.
Austin, who won’t turn 29 until next June, says he worked particularly hard in pre-season training and the Whites side which he now proudly captains are about to reap the rewards.
“I think I did very well in pre-season,†he said.
“I did some extra work and stuff because I wanted to be stronger and I wanted to be a big part of the season.
“It was pleasing to be on the pitch on Sunday.
“I was getting a bit of cramp at the end but I carried on as I knew that I could finish the game.â€
