I scored 24 goals helping my side win promotion back to the Premier League aged just 22. Then in my first season in the top flight I had bagged an impressive 15 goals by the end of January. My form earned me an England call-up. Am I a £35m striker? No. I am Michael Ricketts, February 2002.

Hevneaksjon?

Syns motstanderen ligner mer Bale enn Barca. ;)

Team is everything for Leeds United’s captain

New Leeds skipper Rudy Austin says it doesn’t matter who wears the armband if all 11 players perform as captains. Lee Sobot reports.

Rodolph Austin followed his first outing as Leeds United captain with his first captain’s ‘press conference’. He might find it’s the first of many.

But that won’t be a problem for the ice-cool Jamaican who conducted himself in likable fashion in front of the expectant media.

It rounded off quite a weekend for Leeds United’s man of the match who says he will remain his hard-working self whilst being “honoured” to hold the Leeds United captaincy.

If Sunday’s display against Leicester is anything to go by – both on and off the pitch – the Jamaican will be just fine.

Austin, 28, was always in for a big weekend at Leicester with the fixture marking the end of the combative midfielder’s three-match suspension picked up for a red card against Brighton at the back end of last season.

And not only was Austin thrust straight back into the starting line-up in place of Michael Tonge, but also with the honour of wearing the captain’s armband to boot.

The midfielder has evidently impressed new boss Brian McDermott who has described his tough tackling midfielder as “a special person” who trains “every day like it’s his last”.

And, even with the added responsibilty of the Leeds United captaincy, Austin has vowed to continue in the same vein with the Whites favourite honoured and not overawed to be handed the captaincy.

Austin – signed from Norwegian outfit SK Brann last summer – admits he never considered he would be Leeds United’s new skipper 13 months later, the six-foot star having succeeded previous incumbent, defender Lee Peltier in the role.

But the Jamaican international says he will feel proud and not pressured to wear the armband with the midfield general promising commitment to the Whites cause in abundance from both himself and those around him.

“When I signed here I didn’t know I would become the captain and it’s a big honour,” Austin told the YEP.

“I will try my best to do a good job and help the boys.

“But I don’t feel any extra pressure and I’m the type of person where I don’t put extra pressure on myself.

“Before the game or after the game – I just have to do what I do best.

“I just have to do my job, the same as the other players have to do theirs.

“I came to this club to play my football – that’s what I do for a living and that’s what I do to help back the team and get really behind them.

“As I’ve said before, it doesn’t matter who is the captain.

“It’s all about the team, there are no individuals.

“If there’s 11 of us out there having a captain’s mentality it will be a very good team.”

United certainly showed one aspect of being that very good team on Sunday in their goalless draw at Leicester City.

Defensively, the Whites were hard to criticise.

At the heart of that unit – protecting the back four – was that man Austin.

There is no denying the Jamaican’s calming and re-assuring influence with Austin keen to stress that he will be a captain to encourage others.

Austin – raised in the Clarendon Parish of Jamaica – says he will never be one to rant and rave, but a commanding presence whose more softly spoken words will speak volumes.

“Sometimes you don’t have to shout,” he said.

“Sometimes you can just tell someone that they should go there or they should do that.

“You don’t have to raise your voice all the time.

“I’m that type of person where I don’t like to put down someone.

“I just like to encourage – whether you do bad or do good.

“You are still learning.”

As too are Leeds United under McDermott who will take charge of his ninth competitive outing when the Whites welcome South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday to Elland Road on Saturday.

Already McDermott is building up an impressive record with the Whites having won five, drawn one and lost just two – against Brighton and Birmingham – under his tenure.

Yet both of those defeats came at the back end of last season and 2013-14 – McDermott’s first full season at the helm at Elland Road – is clearly the one that matters.

Austin has now been unveiled as the former Reading manager’s new captain with Austin declaring himself satisfied with United’s start to the campaign.

“It’s been a very good start to the season,” said Austin.

“We just have to keep delivering all the time and I hope that we can keep getting more and more points to give ourselves the best chance of succeeding.”

With Austin at the helm, there is every chance that United’s points haul will be plentiful with the midfielder’s best also yet to come.

Making his first appearance of the season, the Jamaican says he was struggling with cramp towards the end of Sunday’s success at Leicester – not that you could tell.

Typical of his commitment, the six-foot star soldiered on manfully to the end.

But it means even better can be expected from United’s energetic ace in the fixtures that follow.

Austin, who won’t turn 29 until next June, says he worked particularly hard in pre-season training and the Whites side which he now proudly captains are about to reap the rewards.

“I think I did very well in pre-season,” he said.

“I did some extra work and stuff because I wanted to be stronger and I wanted to be a big part of the season.

“It was pleasing to be on the pitch on Sunday.

“I was getting a bit of cramp at the end but I carried on as I knew that I could finish the game.”

Rodolph Austin – Warrior – Leader – Captain
by Right In The Gary Kelly's (har nå egen spalte i kampprogrammet)

Think of Leeds United captains and some glorious names immediately spring to mind. Billy Bremner, Gordon Strachan, Lucas Radebe, Gary McAllister – players who captained by the very ethos laid out by the great Bremner himself – side before self. Players who also led by example; can you imagine being in a side captained by Wee Gordon and not giving one hundred percent? Boy, you’d soon know about it.

The appointment of Rudy Austin to the role before Sundays game against Leicester City might finally start us moving back towards that mindset. I’d argue that the last “genuine” captain we had at the Club was Richard Naylor. Handed the role before he’d even signed for us on a permanent basis, Naylor was a leader, and a Leeds fan. Sadly we got him towards the end of his career, and so his reign was short lived. After Naylor, the armband went to local boy and heir apparent Jonny Howson. Although it was always evident how much the role meant to him, you just got the feeling that he wasn’t cut out for captaincy. He didn’t seem willing, or able, to rouse the team if things weren’t going well. That’s not a criticism of Howson – I just think the role wasn’t right for him, and he landed it more because of where he was from, than how suitable he was to lead the Whites.

After Howson, things got a bit surreal. Andy Lonergan anyone? I’m not sure what was going through Grayson’s mind at this point, but selecting your goalkeeper as captain? Unless you’re Dino Zoff, it’s never really worked. Maybe from time to time, to fill in for the normal skipper, but appointing a keeper permanently just smacked of the knowledge that Grayson didn’t really have any outfield leaders to call on.

And so we move onto our glorious leader last season, Neil Warnock. He teased us by giving everyone a go at the captaincy in pre-season. Heck, even Robbie Rogers had the armband before another injury calamity befell him. Speculation was rife – Jason Pearce, who’d captained Portsmouth before we signed him? Ross McCormack, who looked to be the only player who actually knew what it was to “be”Leeds? Rudy Austin, the newly signed warrior? But no, Colin chucked us a curve-ball and appointed Lee Peltier. And then promptly discovered he wasn’t even the best right back we had…

Faced with admitting he was wrong (yeah, right), or ploughing on regardless, Warnock took the latter option, and squeezed Peltier in wherever he could. Left back, central defence – as long as he could find a spot for his captain, his decision was somehow vindicated. I feel sorry for Peltier – a bigger man than Warnock would have sorted it out as soon as his mistake became apparent.

And so to this season. My initial thought when the captaincy issue raised its head again was that this would be a real test of McDermott’s character. There was only one logical choice for captain – Rudy. Yet that would mean taking the captaincy away from Peltier – the previous captains I have referred to all left the Club, so no decision was needed. A weaker man (coughs, Colin) would have gone with the status quo. Yet McDermott has played it perfectly; Peltier showed no ill effects yesterday, and even seemed to play with a little more freedom. Although his crossing definitely needs work! Rudy, on the other hand, showed exactly why he is the perfect man for the job. Shorn somewhat of his license to get forward, he instead sat in front of the back four, offering protection that was too often missing last season. Winning everything in the air, snapping into tackles and encouraging teammates, he was everything we needed him to be yesterday. There is more to him game as well – we know he can go box to box, and we know he can score goals. But we also know that he will play by that Bremner ethos – side before self. This was never more obvious than when he collected the Man of the Match award from Sky, and presented it to the whole team, saying “this is for everyone”.

You hear lots of talk these days about teams needing eleven captains on the pitch. I don’t subscribe to that view. Maybe it’s because I spent my formative years watching the difference it made when Gordon Strachan was handed the armband at Elland Road. A leader – in Rudy’s case a warrior – can make a huge difference. There has already been a lot of good work done this summer to bring the feel good factor back to LS11. The appointment of Rudy Austin as the latest incumbent of the Leeds United armband is another massive plus.

Austin’s all-round class makes him perfect captain choice - Lorimer

There’s no set formula for finding a good club captain. Some people reckon your skipper can play in any position.

Maybe it’s because I had so many years with Billy Bremner but my own view is that central midfielders are best suited to the role.

In that area of the pitch you’re always linking with the strikers and the defence and it’s easy to make yourself heard. So I’m more than happy with the choice of Rudy Austin as Leeds United’s new captain. For me he’s the obvious choice to replace Lee Peltier.

Austin’s got all the credentials you want in a leader. He’s experienced at club and international level and he’s someone who, when he’s fit and in form, looks certain to play every week – and play in the same sort of role.

On top of that he leads by example and I don’t mean that as a cliché. An on-song Austin is the heartbeat of the team as we saw at Leicester City on Sunday. I’m sure he was fired up for his first game with the armband but even so, his performance was deserving of the man-of-the-match award.

In a tight, hard-fought game, he really comes into his own. He’s useful at both ends of the field and when the pressure’s on he almost acts as an extra defender. If you watch a re-run of that game on Sunday, you’ll see Austin win header after header and plenty of tackles in and around our box. That’s the commitment you need.

You also look for consistency of attitude. Little Billy didn’t have many bad days for Leeds but in the games where things weren’t going right for him, he kept his head and his body language right. If nothing else it always made you feel like he might produce a bit of magic in the blink of an eye. When a captain starts dropping his shoulders, you know you’re in trouble.

The pleasing thing about Austin is that I can only see him getting better. He’s had impressive spells in his short time at Leeds but he’s been hampered by a few things. For starters, when he first came here from Norway he’d not had a break for well over a year. The differing schedules of the Norwegian season and the English season meant he was forced to play without a break for longer than he should have done.

He’s probably one of the strongest and F***est players in United’s squad but professional football doesn’t let you get away with so much time on the field. Then, of course, he got that nasty injury against Watford in November – and that’s without even touching on his international commitments.

For most players in this country, the average international match takes you to the middle of Europe. Every time Austin plays he’s having to fly over the Atlantic and embark on long, tiring trips. The international breaks help but as we found with the game at Sheffield Wednesday last season, sometimes it means he’s arriving back in England hours before a league match.

This summer Brian McDermott has done everything he can to give Austin a proper rest. Because of that, I expect Austin to improve as this season goes on. I think we’ve landed a big asset there and giving him the captaincy will probably bring the best out of him. It’s an astute call by Brian. As for Peltier, I actually think this decision could help him. Whether he’s happy about it or not – and I’m sure he’s a touch disappointed, as anyone would be – it might be an opportunity for him to focus solely on his football and concentrate on nailing down a fixed place in the team.

Peltier in my book was hard done to last season. He came here as a right-back, or so I understood, but played at centre-back more often than not and we quite often used him at left-back. The form of Sam Byram kept him out of his natural position but at the same time, it’s difficult to lead the team when you’re not really certain of your role in it.

The news about Sam hasn’t been so good recently and it’s difficult to know when we’ll see him back so it’s really important that Peltier finds a consistent vein of form. He’s Brian’s right-back for the foreseeable future and the chance to play in his preferred position for a decent run of games could do him the world of good.

I would never accuse Peltier of being a bad captain. I don’t think that’s fair at all. I simply feel that the circumstances last season weren’t right for him. Your captain is never immovable or undroppable but he should be near enough as damn it. I’m certainly expecting Austin to be a fixture in the centre of United’s midfield. In Austin’s case, gaining the captaincy should raise his game. In a strange way, taking it from Peltier might do the same to him. This is good man-management on both fronts and credit to Brian for making the call.
