EXCLUSIVE: Ahead of Leeds United’s Championship fixture with Blackpool, a game that has been promoted with specially discounted tickets to attract fans back to Elland Road, it has been revealed that new owners GFH Capital have today also injected an additional “seven-figure sum†into the club.
Responding to questions about the investment bank’s long-term commitment to the club, currently sitting 13th in the Championship, a source close to GFH in Dubai confirmed to Sport360 that this significant new investment is to “stabilise the club’s cash positionâ€.
GFH Capital’s ownership of Leeds has come under the microscope in recent days, with suggestions in the media that the Dubai-based, Bahrain-owned Islamic investment bank are already considering selling their stake in the wake of funding issues.
However, these claims have been strenuously repudiated by GFH, and they have since restated their desire to seek additional investment to pursue their long-term vision for the club.
Leeds face Blackpool tonight with hopes of reaching the play-offs fast receding. Discontent amongst the fans, however, has been going in the opposite direction, with calls for manager Neil Warnock’s head combining with disquiet about GFH Capital’s financial muscle.
Tonight’s “Watch Leeds 4 Less†initiative, the first of two games that are being heavily discounted, is one sign GFH have at least begun to address fans’ concerns. According to early estimates, it seems that the attendance will be approaching 24,000 – some 4,500 up on comparable league fixtures in recent weeks.
GFH Capital acquired the club in December last year, bringing to an end Ken Bates’ controversial eight-year reign at Elland Road.
This new investment would appear to underline the cashflow issues that necessitated the sale of stars such as Robert Snodgrass and Jonny Howson in recent transfer windows.
