After yesterday’s speculation that three of our best players might be leaving the club this month, assistant manager Mick Jones has been keen to say that the powers that be at the club are still working hard to improve the squad.
Jones has told the Yorkshire Post that the club is in the process of negotiating deals to bring some new players to the club, but they will take their time to make sure they only sign players of the right quality. “I think we need to add in three or four positions to make us better. We need a stronger squad and a better squad.â€
“We need players to come in who are as good if not better than those who are coming out. The one thing about the manager is that he will not sign anyone for the sake of it. As far as I know, the owners are thinking the same as Neil. We want good players at the club to supplement what we have got and then make a chargeâ€.
“There are a lot of enquiries and phone calls going on. The only problem is that when Leeds United come on the phone, finances double or treble in some cases. In one case in particular, we were talking £1.5million more than the real valuation. But it is Leeds on the phone. We have got to understand that.â€Which all sounds promising, but should we be concerned by the vagueness and the lack of detail about exactly who might be coming in? We can but hope that we’re on the way to signing a couple of decent players, and the reason they can’t name names just now is that negotiations are in progress.
But in addition to the three or four players that Jones has mentioned, we will also need to replace any leading players who leave the club during the current transfer window. One player who is interesting other clubs is Tom Lees, with Aston Villa, QPR, Wigan Athletic and Cardiff City all making enquiries about him according to various reports. However, Celtic have denied that they are likely to make a move for Lees, now that they close to finalising a move for Israeli defender Rami Gershon.
We can but hope that the funds are there to bring some decent players in while holding onto those we already have, but with the true state of the club’s finances still shrouded in mystery, it’s a worrying time to be a Leeds fan.
