Jack Butland (keeper):
Brian McDermott seems pretty happy with veteran goalkeeper Paddy Kenny to be Leeds’ No.1 this season, but none the less, acquiring Stoke starlet Jack Butland on loan would be a major improvement between the sticks.
The 20 year-old rose to acclaim last summer at the London Olympics where he was a mainstay for Team GB, before producing impressive displays throughout his first full season with Birmingham.
Now at Stoke, Butland is keen to source regular football this season after realising he won’t be usurping Asmir Begovic from the first team any time soon, and a Championship loan move seems more than likely.
The once-capped England prodigy is desperate to make a case for himself before the 2014 World Cup, and will jump at the chance to impress for any club he’s farmed out to.
None the less, he’d still be an addition to the Elland Road wage bill, and Brian McDermott would rather spend the money on other areas of the first team.
Ricardo Vaz Te
Wantaway West Ham winger Ricardo Vaz Te is searching for a new home after submitting a transfer request at Upton Park just before deadline day.
The Portuguese has fallen behind Joe Cole, Stewart Downing and Matt Jarvis in the pecking order on the flanks, and Sam Allardyce was happy enough to let Vaz Te leave to Norwich on deadline day, before the planned deal collapsed.
But with the emergency loan window just around the corner, the Hammers could farm the 26 year-old out in order to get him off the wage bill.
Vaz Te’s Premier League performances have hardly been inspiring over the years, but the winger was sensational during his last Championship campaign.
The former Portugal U21 netted 10 goals in 22 appearances for Barnsley before a January move to Upton Park in 2011, where he recorded another 10 goals in 15 appearances which proved vital in getting the East Londoners back into the top flight.
Brian McDermott is keen to add a wideman to the Leeds roster after getting cold feet over his planned Chris Burke transfer from Birmingham, whilst he’s also looking to add more goals.
Vaz Te solves both those problems, and has proved he’s promotion material before.
As ever with Premier League players however, wages remain an issue.
Billy Sharp
A host of Championship outfits are on the hunt to sign experienced striker Billly Sharp after Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear the 27 year-old is not in his first team plans.
Sharp has been registered in the Saints’ Premier League squad, but he wasn’t included in pre-season, or the top-flight outfit’s opening three fixtures.
The Sheffield United academy product has always found goals in the lower tiers, with impressive records of 57 goals in 93 games at Scunthorpe, 41 in 86 at Doncaster and 10 goals in 30 outings on loan to Nottingham Forest last season.
Sharp is lethal in front of goal, and possesses the movement and positioning of a natural poacher, but is also capable of finding the net from almost anywhere in the final third.
The Saints man, best known for his heart-warming goal tribute to his deceased son in 2011, would add serious fire power to the Leeds strikeforce and is well acquainted with the Championship.
But if the Whites want to bring Sharp to Elland road, they’ll have to stave off interest from Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Celtic.
His reported £17k per-week wages are also a major issue.
Luciano Becchio
Things haven’t gone too well for Luciano Becchio since joining Norwich from Leeds in January, with no goals in eight Premier League outings.
The striker has now fallen behind new signings Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, Gary Hooper and Johan Elmander in the pecking order at Carrow Road, which could pave the way for a loan switch to the Championship.
The Whites are well acquainted with the 29 year old, who spent five years with the Yorkshire outfit producing 75 league goals in 190 games.
The striker is tall, powerful and talented on the ball, and would link up well with Leeds star forward Ross McCormack, with the two having a pre-existing on-pitch relationship.
Some might see a move for the Argentine as a step back for Leeds, and would rather striking prodigy Matt Smith received more game time.
But if Brian McDermott is keen to add goals to his roster, there are few more established Championship strikers out there, that are already well acquainted with Elland Road.
Andre Wisdom
Liverpool starlet Andre Wisdom had planned to join Wigan on a season-long loan, but Brendan Rodgers pulled out of the deal due to Glen Johnson being sidelined for the next ten weeks.
But deadline day acquisitions of Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori could change his mind, considering the Reds now possess great strength, depth and flexibility at the back.
The 20 year-old burst onto the Anfield scene last season with a string of impressive cameo performances, and he’s been a regular in the junior England set-up for some time, racking up 36 appearances from the U16s upwards so far in his international career.
Wisdom is strong, powerful, fast and capable of playing at either centre-back or right full-back, which would allow Brian McDemott to push Leeds prodigies Sam Byram and Lee Peltier into more promenant positions.
And having been born in Leeds, the Liverpool starlet could welcome the opportunity to receive regular first-team football in his home town.
