Championship side Bristol City have rejected bids from divisional rivals Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday for defender Joe Bryan, according to a report from Somerset Live.
The Whites have been heavily linked with the 23-year-old, as well as his Robins teammate Aden Flint.
However, there are doubts about whether the Yorkshire club can afford to sign both players.
Following the loss of Charlie Taylor to Premier League side Burnley, Leeds are stepping up their search for a replacement as the new season continues to approach thick and fast.
New boss Thomas Christiansen has already added to his squad; goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald and holding midfielder Vurnon Anita are just two of the high-profile signings made by the club, as they prepare to build on their 7th-placed finish last season that saw the club narrowly miss out on a playoff spot.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough have also been busy in the transfer market since their relegation from the top flight, having brought in prolific Danish forward Martin Braithwaite as well as signing Britt Assombalonga from Nottingham Forest for a club-record fee.
Bryan is a product of Bristol City’s youth academy, and has already made almost 200 career appearances for the Robins despite his tender years.
It is believed that Robins boss Lee Johnson sees the player as a key part of his plans for next season, and has instructed the club to do everything in their power to keep hold of him.
Leeds kick off their season with a trip to newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers on August 6th, while Boro face a tough away match at Molineux as they take on Wolves.
