Exclusive interview with a talented youngster named in the PFA Team of the Year
Fabian Delph's Exclusive Interview – Leeds UnitedFabian collects his League One Team of the Year medal from PFA chairman Chris Powell. Fabian Delph has had an eye-catching first season for Leeds as they attempt to bounce back into the Championship and has been saluted by his fellow professionals after being named in the PFA Divisional Team of the Year.
The 19-year-old was first unveiled by former manager Gary McAllister and burst onto the scene this year with a brace of stunning goals against Walsall that announced his arrival in style. The Bradford born teenager has also been identified as a potential national star of the future and appeared for the Under-21s against the Czech Republic in November. Premier League clubs have been keeping a watchful eye on Delph’s progress with chairman Ken Bates’ reportedly rejecting bids from two clubs earlier in the campaign.
However, with Leeds in pole position for a return to the Championship via the play-offs on current form then Delph is likely to be staying put at Elland Road for the foreseeable future. Delph claimed a hat-trick of awards at Leeds’ end of season awards dinner – Players’ Player of the Year. Young Player of the season and goal of the season to emphasise just how highly he is regarded in West Yorkshire.
Expectations are high at Elland Road but Delph is proving that he can cope with that as the young starlet looks forward to potentially tasting life in the second tier of English football next season. Givemefootball’s Ian Clarkson spoke exclusively to Delph at the Grosvenor Hotel in London as he collected his award after being included in the PFA League One Divisional Team of the year
HAVE YOU BEEN PLEASED WITH HOW THE SEASON HAS GONE FOR YOU SO FAR?
I have had a good season and I have a lot of good people around me, which is one of the reasons why it has gone so well.
ARE YOU CONFIDENT OF PROGRESSING THROUGH THE PLAY-OFFS TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP?
All the young boys want to play as high as they can and the Championship is what we are looking at for next season. We have got a lot of fire in our bellies I am really confident that we can do it.
WHAT HAS LIFE BEEN LIKE UNDER NEW MANAGER SIMON GRAYSON?
The gaffer has been brilliant. Since he arrived he has made quite a few changes and he has been brilliant and he has been really good with me personally. The squad as a group have taken to him really well.
YOU SHOT TO NATIONAL ACCLAIM AFTER SCORING GOALS EARLY ON THIS SEASON DIDN’T YOU?
I scored a couple against Walsall early on. I had a good first half of the season and it went very well but I think I have slacked quite a bit in the second half of the campaign. However, I have just had a two-match ban and hopefully I can come back and do it in the play-offs.
WHAT IS THE AIM FOR FABIAN DELPH IN THE FUTURE?
I am 19 now and want to be playing at as high a level as possible and the Championship would be a good start next season.
