LEEDS PROSPECT IS BAIT
Cheltenham Town manager John Ward is using the prospect of meeting Leeds United next season as an extra incentive for his players to stay in League One.The 2000-01 Champions League semi-finalists are bottom of the Coca-Cola Championship.
Leeds, managed by former England star Dennis Wise, are four points from safety with nine games remaining.
If Cheltenham, who were two points from safety with 12 League One matches left going into today's clash at Millwall, can avoid the drop, there is every chance they could be facing the 1991-92 top flight champions at Elland Road next season.
"What about Cheltenham Town against Leeds United? I threw that at the players this week," Ward said.
"There's a big incentive in that one possible fixture that is in the players' minds at the moment and it would be fantastic. It would be something special if we could look forward to that next year."
Ward is bidding to become the first manager to keep the Robins at League One level for more than a single season.
He said that staying up this term is vital for the club's development and progress.
"We are trying to get better and improve this football club and I think we have done that," Ward said.
Cheltenham have been in the bottom four for most of the season, but Ward is adamant that the great escape is possible in the next two months.
"We've had three defeats in the last 13 league matches and have 12 games left," he said.
" If we can finish with two or three defeats in a similar sort of run, that should be enough to keep us at this level."
