Hartlepool United - Victoria Park
View GalleryAt least one published guide to stadiums in England has suggested that Victoria Park was built on the site of a former rubbish tip. The claim prompts a predictable stream of jokes, though not so readily as the rumour that Pittodrie – the home of Aberdeen – replaced a dung heap in 1899.

Name: Victoria Park
Capacity: 7,691
Record Attendance: 17,426 v Manchester Utd in January 1957
Distance from Elland Road: 81 miles
Year ground opened: 1886
United's last visit: January 18, 1979

But the official line states that Hartlepool's ground came into being during the 19th Century after the closure of a limestone quarry on the north-east coast. West Hartlepool Rugby Club were the original occupants but went out of business in 1908, clearing the way for the football team to move in.
Eight years later, and at the height of World War I, the stadium was bombed by a German Zeppelin, destroying the main stand, and a failure to secure compensation from the government prevented Hartlepool from replacing the structure until the 1980s.
The Teesside club will celebrate their 100th year in the ground in 2008, but it is not a stadium with which United are overly familiar.
Leeds travelled to Hartlepool for a pre-season friendly last summer, losing 2-1, but their most recent competitive visit came in 1979 when they eliminated their hosts from the FA Cup with a 6-2 victory.
The only other time the clubs have met competitively came in 1979 when an FA Cup tie produced one of the biggest crowds ever seen at Victoria Park. Around 16,000 packed into the ground, marginally below the record attendance produced by Manchester United's visit in the same competition 22 years earlier.
Three sections of the stadium are seated, with terracing running along the front of the Camerons Brewery Stand and throughout the single-tiered Town End.
Away fans are funnelled into the Rink End, a small all-seater stand behind one goal with an official capacity of 960 and the occasional supporting pillar obstructing the view.
The total capacity falls beneath 8,000 – the third-smallest arena in the division.
United's trip north on Boxing Day has already been brought forward to a 1pm start, but little over 80 miles lie between Hartlepool and Leeds. The freezing North Sea wind will be waiting to greet all new arrivals.

Pools striker may face Leeds

BOXING DAY DATE: Joel Porter

JOEL Porter could be set to make a dramatic return from injury in time to face Leeds United in the sell-out Boxing Day clash at Victoria Park.
It had been feared the Hartlepool United attacker would be out until the New Year after he suffered knee ligament damage in the 3-1 victory over Tranmere a fortnight ago, where Porter scored Pools' third goal.
The Australian ace has endured a nightmare last two years and has had surgery on both knees in successive season, although his current injury is nowhere near as serious.
He missed almost all of Pools relegation season in 2005/06 as well as a large portion of the promotion campaign last year, although he still managed to return and score six goals.
While he has spent a lot of the current campaign on the bench he has still found the net seven times and his partnership with Ian Moore in the Tranmere victory suggested the duo were set to be given a run together up front.
That opportunity was cruelly denied to Porter but manager Danny Wilson admitted he may return to training by the end of the week and has an outside chance of even making this weekend's trip to Swindon.
Even if Saturday's clash comes too soon, he could be in line to return on Boxing Day in one of most keenly-anticipated league matches in Pools' history.
"Joel might be able to train by the end of this week but we will have to wait and see," Wilson said.
While Porter may have an outside chance, the same cannot be said for Pools' other casualties.
Andy Monkhouse, Jamie McCunnie Ben Clark all remain on the sidelines and face a race against time to be fit for the Leeds clash.
Monkhouse's damaged knee was assessed again yesterday and he may take part in some training this week to see if there is any reaction.
McCunnie was due to have an injection on his knee yesterday and, like Monkhouse, will have to wait and see if there is any improvement.
Clark meanwhile has been told to rest his damaged hamstring but he too is hoping to resume training in time to compete for a place in the side to face the Yorkshire giants.
"It doesn't look like the injuries will improve much this week, but maybe next," Wilson said.
"We will give Andy Monkhouse a blast and see if there is a reaction to his knee.
"If there is then we will have to re-assess it, the same goes for Jamie McCunnie.
"They are unlikely to be okay as is Ben Clark."

Pools v Leeds ticket sales suspended

Hartlepool United football club have announced that tickets for the Boxing Day fixture with Leeds United have been suspended.
Pools have blamed the suspension of sales on a computer failure which means tickets for the home games against Leeds and Leyton Orient can't be printed.
However, tickets are still available to buy for the away matches against Swindon Town and Carlisle United over the festive period.
Almost 6,000 tickets have been sold for the Leeds game and the visitors have already sold out the Rink End.
There are a very limited number of tickets remaining for the fixture but an exact figure is unavailable due to the computer system crashing.

Coles braced for Leeds cauldron

Danny Coles in action for Hull City

On-loan defender Danny Coles is hoping his experience of playing at Elland Road can help Bristol Rovers when they travel to Leeds on Saturday.
Coles played at the stadium for Hull last season, but expects to experience a different atmosphere this time.
Coles told BBC Radio Bristol: "Last season in the Championship they didn't open the top tier of one stand.
"They have had an unbelievable start to this season and they are bringing in the crowds, which is brilliant."
"With the players they have got you would expect them to be up there. It is no surprise," he added.

Bullock makes Pools return
Hartlepool midfielder Lee Bullock has returned to Victoria Park after his loan despite being offered a permanent deal at League Two side Bury.
The 26-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell with the Shakers - starting eight games since joining in October - but he has now opted to return to Victoria Park in an attempt to force his way back into first team reckoning.
Bury's director of football Keith Alexander told the club's official website: "That's his decision and as they (Hartlepool) are a division above us you can understand that."

Hartlepool v Leeds Sold Out

Hartlepool United's Boxing Day fixture against Leeds United has sold out.
The game against the Yorkshire side had less that 50 tickets remaining yesterday and these sold out earlier today.
Despite the kick off being moved twice there will be a bumper crowd at Victoria Park for this important fixture. The game now kicks off at 12noon.
The game is Pools first sell out of the season and fans are reminded to arrive early and avoid queues.

Kamp 22/12:

Corr strike seals win for Robins

Barry Corr's second-half penalty saw Swindon beat Hartlepool 2-1 at home to return to winning ways after a run of three straight defeats.

Corr dusted himself down to take the spot-kick after he had been fouled by Michael Nelson.
There was a positive atmosphere at the County Ground after the future of the cash-strapped Wiltshire club was assured by a New Year takeover this week. But Hartlepool had threatened to spoil the party.
Pool had lost their previous five away games but they took the lead when Godwin Antwi forced Robbie Elliott's free-kick into the path of Ian Moore, who steered the ball home from 12-yards out.
But their joy was short-lived as on-loan Reading striker Simon Cox provided the finish to Miguel Comminges' right-wing assist.
Swindon piled on the pressure and after Lee Peacock had gone close with a headed effort, they were presented with the chance to take all three points when Nelson upended Corr inside the area.

Easy for Ali G

Ali Gibb

ALI Gibb reckons Hartlepool United's Boxing Day glamour clash with Leeds United will be an EASIER match than usual.
The Pools winger, who is pushing for a place in the starting XI to face the Yorkshire giants on Wednesday, admitted Leeds are one of, if not the best side in League One.
But he also insisted that a packed Victoria Park and a vociferous atmosphere can inspire Pools and could propel them to victory.
"Leeds is a massive game but you often find that the bigger the game, the easier it actually is," Gibb said.
"Look at the way we played down at Leeds last time.
"I think everybody who watched that game agreed that we should have come out of that game with three points even though we eventually got beat.
"These are the games that you find that you lift yourself that bit more, the noise of the crowd and the build-up gives you that extra 10 per cent.
"It is not that you don't give 100 per cent every time you go out on the pitch it is just that the bigger the game and atmosphere, sometimes helps you find that bit extra.
"Leeds are a really good side and when you come up against players of that calibre, you know you have to be at your very best."

Old boy plots Leeds downfall

BIG GAME: Pools striker Ian Moore

IAN Moore is hoping his Boxing Day re-union will not be such a happy one for his former Leeds United team-mates.
The Hartlepool United striker scored his 100th career goal in the 2-1 defeat at Swindon and will be looking to add to his tally when he lines up against his old club in Wednesday's sell-out clash.
Moore spent two years at Elland Road before he was released in a summer clearout, along with Pools defender Robbie Elliott, and the pair decided to ply their trade at the Vic.
Despite the turnover in personnel at Leeds, Moore is still friends with a number of players who survived the cull, including midfielder Jonathan Douglas and strikers Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol.
And the 31-year-old admitted he had been surprised by how well Leeds had bounced back from the 15-point deduction that they were handed at the start of the season for going into administration.
"It is obviously a big game for me and Robbie, but everyone's looking forward to it because there will be a full house," said Moore.
"It will be interesting and nice to do battle against them.
"I knew they would be possibly around the play-offs but I didn't think they would bring the points in so quickly.
"But once the supporters get behind them at home, the poorer teams will just fold."
Moore's goal at Swindon was his eighth in a Pools shirt and he has already beaten his tally of five during his Leeds days, where he was often deployed on the flanks.
He admitted it was a relief to finally hit the century mark but said it had been a tough afternoon against an uncompromising Swindon defence.
"I've been wanting this 100th goal for a while and it is a bit of a weight off my shoulders," he said.
"Me and Michael (Mackay) had to live on little scraps and as it was the goal came from a scrap. Michael got a foot on it and it ricocheted to me and luckily I put it in.
It was a scrappy goal but you take them.
"Their two centre-halves are two of the better ones in the division. They are both quick and horrible to play against.
"But at the end of the day we are really gutted and we have got to start picking the three points up in these games.
"We said at half-time we will take the 1-0, try and defend it and see where we go from there but we are just too soft-centred at times.
"I know it starts from up front but we get rolled over too easily when we concede a goal. We are looking about thinking 'oh no not again', whereas we should be looking for another goal.
"I bet the gaffer is pulling his hair out from games where we are in a commanding position and we have thrown it away."

Pools boss wants more fight for Leeds

ANGRY: Pools boss Danny Wilson

A FURIOUS Danny Wilson today challenged his troops to come out fighting when Leeds enter the cauldron of Victoria Park on Boxing Day.
The Hartlepool United manager was left fuming after his side threw away a 1-0 half-time lead at Swindon and gifted the hosts a couple of goals in the second period.
Wilson warned the players after the game that they would be looking towards the bottom of the league rather than the top if they continued to give away soft goals to the opposition.
But he said Pools had a great opportunity to bounce back in style against the division's top scorers and avenge the 2-0 defeat at Elland Road earlier this season, when Leeds were played off the park.
"If we defend like we did at Swindon we'll have a problem but we are very capable of keeping a very tight back four and that's what we will have to do against Leeds," said Wilson.
"It is a big test for us and we know it will be a really tough game. It will be a big crowd, a great atmosphere but we have got to defend better.
"Performance wise at Elland Road it was fantastic, absolutely fantastic.
"But we are inconsistent. We are having games that we think we will be okay in because we have played so well in the game before, but it doesn't work like that."
He added: "That is why we are in the middle of the table. If we defend like we did at Swindon it won't be the top end of the table we will be looking at, it will be the bottom.
"We are far from the worst team in the league, but we are not the best team either. We are in mid-table because we deserve to be.
"If you look at the errors we have made to lose games, they have not been teams that have cut us apart.
"It has been decisions from our point of view that we have got wrong."

Prutton Doubt For Boxing Day

Leeds may be without David Prutton for the Boxing Day visit to Hartlepool due to a head injury.
The midfielder played for just over an hour in Saturday's win over Bristol Rovers following an early clash of heads with Joe Jacobson, who was immediately substituted
Seb Carole is ready to come in after impressing as a replacement on Saturday.
Jonny Howson is expected to keep his place and partner Alan Thompson again in central midfield.

Leeds target top spot at Pools

Leeds United could go top of League One for at least a couple of hours if they win their sell-out, high noon clash with Hartlepool on Boxing Day.
With Swansea City kicking off at 2pm and Nottingham Forest an hour later, Leeds will overtake their rivals if they win.
In fact, with Leeds superior goal difference, a draw would be enough to put them top.
Leeds were fortunate to beat Hartlepool earlier in the season but Danny Wilson's side have had a poor run of late. Hit by injuries, they have only picked up two wins in their last eight outings.
This will be Leeds' first competitive match at the Victoria Ground since Don Revie's side declined to change in the dressing rooms there in January 1979. The team prepared in a nearby hotel and went on to thrash Hartlepool 6-2.
The ground has improved considerably since then but is still a far cry from Elland Road and with former Leeds players Ian Moore and Robbie Elliott wanting to put on a good show, this won't be an easy game for Leeds.

Nolan hands Wilson early gift

Eddie Nolan has handed Hartlepool manager Danny Wilson a major boost after extending his loan deal ahead of the clash with Leeds.
The defender was due to rejoin parent club Blackburn after Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Swindon but will stay at Victoria Park for another month and should remain in the starting line-up.
Michael Mackay picked up a knock at the weekend and is doubtful with Wilson again expected to be without at least four first-team regulars.
Andy Monkhouse, Joel Porter, Jamie McCunnie (all knee) and Ben Clark (hamstring) are all sidelined as Pools look to secure a third straight home win.
Antony Sweeney, Richie Barker and David Foley all came off the bench to feature against Swindon and will be hoping to be involved again.

Hartlepool v Leeds preview
Nolan stays with Pools, Prutton concern for Leeds

On-loan defender Eddie Nolan is available for Hartlepool United, while Leeds United are waiting on David Prutton.
Nolan was due to return to Blackburn Rovers after Saturday's loss at Swindon, but will now stay with Pools for an extra month, and should start against Leeds.
Michael Mackay picked up a knock at the weekend and is doubtful with boss Danny Wilson again likely to be without at least four first-team regulars.
Andy Monkhouse, Joel Porter, Jamie McCunnie (all knee) and Ben Clark (hamstring) are all sidelined.
Antony Sweeney, Richie Barker and David Foley all came off the bench to feature against Swindon and will be hoping to be involved again.

Midfielder Prutton is struggling to be fit to make the game at Victoria Park due to a head injury.
The midfielder lasted just over an hour in Saturday's win over Bristol Rovers following an early clash of heads with Joe Jacobson.
If Prutton is rested, then Leeds boss Dennis Wise is likely to bring Seb Carole into his team.
Otherwise, Leeds have no other new injury or suspension problems, but remain without skipper Jonathan Douglas, who is out for three months with knee ligament damage.
Jonny Howson is expected to partner Alan Thompson in central midfield, with Jermaine Beckford and Tresor Kandol in attack.
Mark De Vries has been ruled out of the Christmas fixture schedule with a groin injury, while Portuguese winger Filipe Da Costa is sidelined with a hamstring problem.

Ankergren
Richardson Marques Heath Hughes
Prutton Howson Thommo/Kish Westlake
Kandol Beckford

Three points at Hartlepool would be the perfect Christmas present
for Dennis Wise and his players at Hartlepool on Boxing Day.

Saturday's 1-0 win against Bristol Rovers lifted United up to third in the table and, given the 12 noon kick-off at Hartlepool, the lads could hit top spot on Wednesday if only for a couple of hours.

"What we're looking for is the three points," said winger Seb Carole. "We want to get in the top-two before January.

"We didn't play our best on Saturday, but's about winning games, it's not always about the way you play.

"At home Hartlepool was a tough game, and they played well.

"They are maybe a little bit down at the moment, and this could be the right time to get them. We have to push hard and hope to win."
Tresor Kandol opens the scoring against Hartlepool

Hartlepool were beaten 2-0 at Elland Road in September, taking us to zero points - Tresor Kandol is pictured opening the scoring - and the manager has made no secret of the fact that he believes they were the best team to come to Leeds.

Danny Wilson's men, who lost at Swindon last weekend, haven't lived up to their early season form, but assistant boss Dave Bassett knows United will face a tough test in the north east.

"Hartlepool are a good team," said Dave. "I saw them play Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the season when they played extremely well and were very unfortunate to lose after being 1-0 up.

"I hear they played very well down here as well early on, despite us winning the game 2-0.

"They are a good side, Danny Wilson is a good manager, and they have some good players.

"But we'll be looking to go there and win the game."

United will be backed by just 950 fans in a sell-out crowd, and French winger Seb is once again calling on the support to help the team to victory.

"It was thanks to the crowd we scored on Saturday because they never let us down," he added.

"They were great, they were there when we needed them, and they were a good lift for us.

"Even away from home the crowd is there for us. It doesn't matter that there's less than 1000 - they will still cheer more than the home fans."

God jul
