Leeds United are treating Kasper Schmeichel's foot injury with caution as the goalkeeper aims for a comeback after the international break.
Schmeichel is undergoing limited amounts of training at Thorp Arch with a view to returning to contention next month, but manager Simon Grayson said the club were taking care not to "overload" the Dane's rehabilitation programme.
A problem affecting a tendon in one of Schmeichel's feet has forced him to miss United's last five Championship matches, and he will be absent again during Saturday's trip to Ipswich Town.
Leeds expected his injury to rule him out for six weeks, and their game at Middlesbrough on October 16 – a clash which ends a fortnight-long interlude for international matches – is the first occasion when Schmeichel is likely to be available.
United have experienced mixed fortunes without their first-choice keeper, beating Swansea City and Sheffield United but losing heavily to Barnsley and Preston North End.
Grayson said: "Kasper's doing a little bit of goalkeeping work but he's sore with his tendon. He still has a boot on and he's doing some handling work.
"It'll be after the international break when he's back. The injury just needs time to heal. We had to be careful because if he'd continued playing, he could have had quite some time out.
"The injury isn't a serious thing but it could be a problem if we overload him with work."
Shane Higgs has deputised for Schmeichel throughout September and he may retain his place at Portman Road this weekend, despite conceding six goals against Preston on Tuesday night.
Leeds signed Jason Brown on loan from Blackburn to provide cover for Higgs, and Schmeichel's fitness will dictate whether Grayson moves to retain Brown, whose month-long deal expires after the clash with Ipswich.
