Leeds invited to share meeting (YEP 28/7)
LEEDS UNITED were last night handed a ray of hope that their bleak summer could be drawing to a close when the Football League last night invited club officials to a meeting.
The Elland Road club have been effectively in limbo following the League's decision not to rubber-stamp the July 11 deal that saw the administrators, KMPG, sell the business to Ken Bates.
It had been expected that the club's share in the League – suspended when Leeds went into administration on May 4 – would be transferred to the new company Leeds United 2007 Ltd, but instead further documentation was requested from KPMG.
Those papers were received on Wednesday and the League last night broke the deadlock that saw players go unpaid by inviting senior officials of both United and KPMG to a meeting early next week where the main topic will be the transfer of the share.
Time is clearly of the essence for United with the League One season due to kick off a fortnight today. No club officials would comment when contacted by the Yorkshire Post last night.
The League's statement said: "The board of The Football League met today (Friday) to consider the current situation regarding Leeds United.
"At the meeting, the board were informed by their legal representatives that the club's administrator, KPMG, had delivered on Wednesday the final documentation requested by the League.
"The Board, therefore, convened at the earliest opportunity. The board considered all the information submitted and authorised the chairman to invite senior representatives of Leeds United 2007 Ltd and KPMG to a meeting early next week with a view to seeking to make progress."
The possible ending of the impasse between United and the League will come as a huge boost for Dennis Wise with his rebuilding plans for the new season having to remain on hold during the deadlock.
The United manager has already missed out on several transfer targets, but he is expected to move quickly once the share is returned.
