Former Leeds United striker retires from football
JIMMY FLOYD HASSELBAINK has announced his retirement from football, at the age of 36.
The Holland international scored 34 goals in 69 games between 1997 and 1999 while playing for Leeds United, before moving to Atletico Madrid.

Southgate backs ex-Middlesbrough pal Hasselbaink for coaching success
Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has backed former teammate Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to enjoy a successful coaching career.
Hasselbaink has joined Steve McClaren's staff at FC Twente and Southgate told the Sunday Sun: "Someone said I should have signed him last year!
“He was excellent in his time here and I’m sure he’ll be good whatever he turns his hand to, because he’s very enthusiastic and dedicated. Whatever he does, he’ll want to do well.
“He’s doing his coaching badges and he’s got good opinions on the game. I enjoyed working with him. He’s had that upbringing through Dutch football and played in Europe, in Portugal and England. So he’s got good experience.
“I think he’ll want to pass that experience on. I don’t know if he wants to coach or manage but whatever he wants to do he’ll do it wholeheartedly, and want to make a success of it, that’s for sure.”

Milner a threat to O'Neill's Villa job
James Milner is a major threat to Martin O'Neill's Aston Villa job!
The former Newcastle and Leeds winger explained: "I have never started and finished a season with the same manager in the six or seven years I have been playing.
"Hopefully, that is not a bad omen for the gaffer!
"There have been problems troubling clubs I have been with in the past and those experiences have matured me as a player - definitely."

SINNOTT OUSTED AT VALE
Port Vale have dismissed manager Lee Sinnott after the club's disappointing start to the season.
The League Two outfit have lost their last four games in all competitions and have won just two of their nine matches so far this term.
A section of Vale fans called for Sinnott to be sacked after Saturday's 4-1 home defeat to Macclesfield and the club's board wasted no time in acting.

MARINERS SET TO HAUL IN AMEOBI
Doncaster striker Tomi Ameobi is poised to join Grimsby on a one-month loan deal to gain some valuable first-team experience.
The 20-year-old has yet to make a senior appearance for Rovers after signing from Leeds in the summer and now moves to Blundell Park.
Ameobi could make his debut against Barnet on Saturday and becomes caretaker manager Stuart Watkiss' second signing in a day after he swooped to lure Huddersfield midfielder Malvin Kamara to the club.

Scott Sellars reveals his biggest regret

LEAVING Ewood Park was always going to tug at the heart strings of Scott Sellars but the chance to return to newly-crowned champions Leeds United and prove his boyhood club wrong was just too big a lure to resist.
After a six-year spell at Ewood Park spanning over two hundred appearances and ending in promotion to the top flight, via an emotional Wembley play-off final, the stylish midfielder was crossing the pennines with a satisfied feeling of ‘job done’.
Just a year later his dream move ‘home’ had turned sour though and, with his former club and real love’ at the start of what was to be a memorable Premier League adventure, Sellars cannot help but look back and think ‘what if’?
He went on to enjoy successful times at Rovers’ opponents tomorrow, Newcastle United, before spending four years at Bolton, but the former Ewood favourite still describes leaving Blackburn as his “biggest career regret”.
Now teamed up with former Rovers team-mate Lee Richardson, as his assistant manager at League Two Chesterfield, Sellars is enjoying giving youngsters the same chance he was given all those years back â€" admitting the top flight dream has disappeared for many.
He believes it was his move from Leeds to Rovers in 1986 that paved the way for an illustrious top flight career and, with a Full Members Cup winners medal, an England Under 23 cap and promotion on his CV, his time at Ewood will never be forgotten.
He said: “We were so close to promotion for so long.
“Bobby Saxton brought me to the club and it was such a relief when we finally won promotion by beating Leicester in the play-off final.
“That Wembley final was my last game for Blackburn and was one of the happiest moments of my career. We had wanted promotion for so long and finally we did it.
“Leeds had just won the First Division title the season before though and I felt I still had a point to prove at the club, having come through the ranks at Elland Road, I know now it was the wrong decision.”
Immediately after Sellars’ departure in 1992, Jack Walker’s millions saw the arrival of the likes of Alan Shearer, Graeme Le Saux and Kevin Gallacher to spark the start of a brand new dawn.
They quickly emerged as Premier League contenders, finally winning the trophy in 1995, proving to Sellars he had made his biggest mistake.
“I had six great seasons at Blackburn and it was where I established myself as a player,” he said. “My move to Leeds was a bad move because it just never worked out.
“It is my biggest regret although I loved my time at Newcastle, where I eventually lost my place to an outstanding David Ginola, and at all the other clubs I have been at since.
“Jack Walker totally changed things around at Blackburn and maybe I should have stayed to see if I could have been part of it. You can’t look back in football though.”
Still addicted by the ‘football bug’, Sellars has taken his first steps into the world of management and is loving every minute of it.
A coaching role at Mansfield was followed by a similar position at Sheffield United, before being re-uinted with Richardson at Chesterfield in 2004.
He said: “I knew I wanted to get into coaching and was taking my badges even before I had stopped playing.
“Obviously I have known Lee a long time. We won promotion together at Blackburn and then got together at Huddersfield Town again.
“I was coaching at Sheffield United when he asked if I wanted to join him at Chesterfield and I am really enjoying myself and enjoying the step up from youth football.”
While many of his Rovers successors are still living off the glory of Premier League triumph, just three seasons on from his departure, Sellars has been experiencing life at the other end of the game but loving every minute of it.
The 47-year-old though believes the game has changed dramatically since his time as a player, revealing the influx of money has helped improve the lower leagues.
He said: “I was obviously at Blackburn before Jack Walker’s money and at the time, like a lot of clubs, they were taking the chance on younger players.
“That does not seem to happen as much anymore. If you look at squads in the Premier League, they are huge, and with the increase in foreign players it has become much harder for the kids.
“Without a doubt the quality in the lower leagues has become far, far better than it used to be, because these youngsters are filtering down to our level.
“From our point of view, we have to look at youngsters who are being released by Premier League sides and giving them their chance to work their way back up.”
As two of his former clubs go head-to-head at St James’ Park tomorrow, Sellars will have all his focus on the Spireites home clash with Brentford - but will allow himself a quick sneak at full time.
He said: “I keep an eye out for all my old clubs results, especially Blackburn and Newcastle, but on matchdays I normally have enough to worry about myself nowadays.”

Vinnie: Let me help

VINNIE JONES has told Joe Kinnear: Let me help you knock Newcastle into shape.
The former midfield tough-guy turned Hollywood actor was Kinnear’s captain at Wimbledon and has been stunned at the way the new Newcastle boss has been mocked.
But Jones, 43, revealed: “I’d be back in England like a shot if Joe wanted any help.
“I’m sure he will be able to turn the club around and if he feels I’d be able to contribute in any way, I’d get the next plane back from LA.
“I’m not filming for a few weeks so there is absolutely nothing to stop me if I get a call.”
Kinnear has already taken stick from many fans and does not even officially start as successor to Kevin Keegan until Monday.
Jones added: “Joe will be better than the fans think. He was probably the best man-manager I ever played for because he treated players like adults.
“He will breeze into Newcastle and I can guarantee he will make everyone feel at ease because he won’t be overawed by what is in front of him.”

Fra leedsunited-mad.co.uk's serie "Leeds Cult Figures":

Micky Adams
We take a look at former Leeds left-back Micky Adams.
Michael, Richard Adams (Born Sheffield, November 8, 1961)
Played for the Whites 1986-1988 (88 apps with 1 sub app and 3 goals)
Adams' left boot helped fire Leeds to our first FA Cup semi-final for 10 years. His long-range shot at windswept Wigan set up a 2-0 win and a Hillsborough showdown with his old club Coventry City.
Adams, a raiding left-back, had only joined United from the Sky Blues 10 weeks before that epic 1987 semi in which Leeds lost 3-2.
The former England Youth international did not make the grade at Sheffield United but he shone at Gillingham prompting a step up to the First Division with Coventry before his switch to Elland Road (£110000).
Two years later United more than doubled their money when he moved onto Southampton (£250000).
At 34 he became the youngest manager operating in the League when he combined a player/manager role at Fulham, taking over from Ian Branfoot in March 1996 with the London club languishing in 91st place in the league.
After he had help the club avoid non-league football, Fulham were promoted to Division Two as runners-up the following season.
Following the takeover of Fulham by Mohammed Al Fayed, Adams was dismissed as manager in September 1997 in favour of Kevin Keegan (Director of Football) and Ray Wilkins (Head Coach).
Shortly after his dismissal from Fulham, Adams made a quick return to management with Swansea City in Division Three but left after 13 days.
Adams claimed that the money he had been promised to strengthen the team had not been forthcoming, but within days he had joined Brentford.
Adams took his third job of the 1997-98 season when he was named manager of Brentford in place of Eddie May who had been appointed in the summer of '97.
But Brentford were relegated to Division Three on the last day of the season, and the club was bought out by Ron Noades who installed himself as the new boss.
Adams was caretaker-manager for Nottingham Forest for a single Premiership game in 1998-99, which he lost.
He returned to management in April 1999 with Division Three strugglers Brighton & Hove Albion.
In his second full season as manager, Adams guided Brighton to promotion as Division Three champions in 2000-01 after the club had spent five seasons in the league's basement division.
Adams left Brighton to become assistant manager to Dave Bassett at Leicester City.
Adams was then promoted to the manager's seat while Bassett became Director of Football after the club were relegated from the top division.
He guided them back to the Premiership at the first attempt as they ended the 2002-03 season as Division One runners-up behind champions Portsmouth.
But Leicester slipped back down again in 2003-04 in 18th place, along with Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Adams resigned as Leicester manager in October 2004 after a poor start to the Coca Cola League Championship campaign.
In January 2005, Adams made a return to management in the Coca Cola Championship with struggling Coventry City, a club he had been at during his playing career.
He managed to save the club from relegation that year. He was expected by some to mount a challenge for promotion to the Premiership in 2005-06, which was the club's first season in the new Ricoh Arena.
The team started out poorly, but improved in the second half of the season to rise up the table.
However despite excellent home form, he could only guide Coventry as high as 8th, missing out on a play-off place.
On January 17, 2007 the club parted company with Adams, with Coventry lying 16th in the Championship.
Adams was appointed by Colchester United as assistant manager to Geraint Williams replacing Mick Harford who had left the previous month.
He subsequently left this role in January 2008, stating that he wanted to return to management.
In May 2008, Adams returned to Brighton, taking over from Dean Wilkins.

Jets sign Griffiths on long-term deal

Newcastle Jets have secured the services of reigning Jonny Warren Medallist Joel Griffiths for the next three years.
In a major coup for the Jets, Griffiths will become the club’s marquee player until 2011/2012 and CEO John Tsatsimas couldn’t be happier with the result.
Speaking to the A-League’s official website, he said, “It’s certainly a monumental moment for the club and for Joel.
“We believe that Joel is a superb ambassador for the sport and for this great city. He plays with pride, he plays with passion, and he wears his heart on his sleeve. That’s been the main reason that he has been so popular with our fans, and we are proud to have him as part of the Newcastle Jets well into the future.”

Windass had threatened to quit Premier League Hull after being frozen out by manager Phil Brown but has decided to stay and fight for his place following clear-the-air talks.

Utrolig dersom det er sant at man har forsøkt å hente Windass !
Han er en spiller vi overhodet ikke trenger; feil alder, feil spillestil, feil rykte og feil etternavn (vel, den siste var kanskje litt usaklig...).

(....) McAllister was forced into a late change to his original starting line-up at London Road after goalkeeper David Lucas damaged his finger in the pre-match warm-up.
United called on substitute keeper Casper Ankergren, who produced an excellent performance under considerable pressure, but Lucas' injury has left McAllister without experienced cover for the Dane.
Youngster Alan Martin is midway through a month's loan at Blue Square Premier club Barrow and youngster Jonathan Lund is the only other keeper in McAllister's first-team squad.

Stoke keen on Villa winger Milner

Venables linked with shock return at Tottenham
Terry Venables is being lined up for a shock return to Tottenham.
The News of the World says senior figures at the club see former manager Venables as the perfect man to replace under-fire sporting director Damien Comolli.
Venables retains close links with Spurs and this week praised chairman Daniel Levy.
He said: “I’ve got to know him over the years and got to like the way he thinks â€" and the dreams he had for Tottenham, too.”
Key figures at Spurs believe Venables can work in tandem with Juande Ramos and he would be intrigued to discuss the possibility of a return â€" although there has been no contact.

Maybury returns to Hearts for trials
Alan Maybury has begun training with former club Hearts as he bids to find a new team following his release from Leicester City in the summer.
The right-back spent six months of last season on loan with Aberdeen, but turned down the chance to make the move permanent.
Following an unsuccessful trial with Crystal Palace, he is now in training with Hearts and hopes to win a contract.
“They invited me in and we’ll see if anything happens further down the line,” revealed Maybury.
“I loved my time at Hearts and to go back would be great. My agent is speaking to a few other clubs as well.”

CANCER BATTLE FOR HORSFIELD
Former Fulham, Birmingham and West Brom striker Geoff Horsfield has revealed he is suffering from testicular cancer.
The 34-year-old, who was released by Sheffield United last summer and was hoping to earn a contract at Walsall, has been forced to retire as a result and will undergo surgery next week.
Horsfield told the Daily Mirror: "I found a small lump in my left testicle and went to see the doctor at West Brom, who's a good friend of mine.
"I was diagnosed last Friday and I'm going in for surgery next Thursday. The surgeon has told me that this is the end of my professional career, which is disappointing.
"But I've had 10 good years with Fulham, Birmingham, Wigan, West Brom and all the other clubs I've played for and enjoyed it.
"That's at the back of my mind now. It's just one of those things and I've come to terms with my career being over.
"All I'm thinking about now is beating this. I've always been a fighter right through my football career and I'm going to fight this and win."
Horsfield has been told he has a good chance of recovery after the diagnosis was made early.
He added: "The specialist told me I did well to find the lump because it is so small," he said. "He says I stand a good chance of making a full recovery because we've got in early." (PA)

Sir Bobby: Newcastle gaffed appointing Wise

Sir Bobby Robson says Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley got it wrong bringing in Dennis Wise to run his football staff.
He told the Daily Mail: "I felt that lift, the emotion, when Kevin (Keegan) was appointed. On that day, the whole city was enraptured, everyone was excited and thought that the Messiah had returned, that it might take a little while, but he'd get it right.
"Everyone thought he'd have a great relationship with Mike Ashley, he'd been given a three-year contract so the club would back him, they'd find the money and he'd run. It was a shock, but it felt like an inspired choice. I thought to myself 'this is it now'.
"But then they threw a spanner in the works by appointing Dennis Wise and he operates from London. The mistake was bringing people in who aren't attuned to the club and who worked at the opposite end of the country. And whether Dennis has got the skill and expertise and experience in that field is very doubtful.
"They've brought in people like Xisco and Gonzalez and when I first saw them I thought 'Oh my God! How are they going to play in the Premier League? Who's responsible for buying those players? Who saw them play? When did they see them? How many times and where are the scouting reports?' I think it's wrong and potentially a waste of money."

My poker dot pants

BURNLEY striker Robbie Blake has revealed the story behind his cheeky midweek goal celebration at Coventry.
The Clarets ace put his team 2-1 ahead then dropped his shorts to reveal red pants bearing the slogan ‘Bad Beat Bob’.
Blake said: “A bad beat is when you have a good poker hand that is a clear favourite to win but is beaten.
“When we play on the bus, I think I am miles ahead and it turns out the only card someone needs to beat me, they get!
“When Clarke Carlisle told me he’d got me a present and I had to wear them at Coventry, I said no problem. Then he turns up with these bright red slips with, ‘Bad Beat Bob’ on.
“He said, ‘If you score, you have to whip them bad boys out’ â€" what great timing!”

Striker hits out after death threats

Former Preston North End, Leeds United, Fulham and Sunderland striker David Healy hit out tonight after his life was threatened following a bizarre allegation against him on the internet.
In a television interview, the Sunderland player welcomed a recent international goal he had scored by saying it had thankfully ended his "drought or famine" in front of the net.
But the Healy's comments were portrayed as a reference to a sectarian chant relating to the Irish famine sung by Rangers fans which has hit the headlines.
A video clip of his post-match interview on Ulster Television placed on an internet site has received thousands of hits and spawned online threats against the player.
Tonight Healy said: "I made reference to famine and people have maliciously represented those comments.
"I am hugely disappointed in this. I am very angry."
Ulster Television tonight replayed the entire interview to show its context was harmless.
Healy attracted criticism in July when he mimicked playing the flute - a reference to Orange Order parades - during a friendly match between Celtic and Fulham, who he played for at the time.
Healy made an immediate apology for the incident which he said came after he was heckled by Celtic fans.

Minstermen sign Rothery

York City have signed former Leeds United trainee Gavin Rothery on a short-term contract.
Rothery (21) is noted as an attacking right-sided midfielder who is always keen to take on his man, and featured for City's reserves in their 4-3 midweek defeat at Hartlepool United.
He had recently been trying to earn a contract at Chesterfield, whose assistant manager Scott Sellars then recommended him to York chief Colin Walker.
Rothery originally attended Morley High School and played his first football with Churwell Lions juniors before being spotted at an early age. He become a member of the Leeds United academy from the age of ten.
Although he never made a senior appearance at Elland Road, where he later suffered a broken ankle, he did progress as far as making their substitutes' bench.
But the former England under-19 international was released by Leeds boss Gary McAllister in April following an earlier trial spell at Cheltenham Town.
The deal was completed in time for Rothery to be available for this weekend's FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round tie with Mansfield Town at KitKat Crescent.

Mel's battled back from the brink

In his playing career Mel Sterland was admired as one who never shirked a challenge and was as honest as the day is long.
Those qualities are now being employed in equal measure by the hugely-popular ex-Leeds United defender to cope with life on civvy street, a turbulent odyssey which has already driven him to the brink of suicide.
It comes as no surprise that the defender â€" part of the Whites' Division One and Two title-winning vintages of 1991-92 and 1989-90 respectively â€" hasn't shied away from talking about his considerable off-the-field demons with typical candour in his pull-no-punches autobiography, entitled Boozing, Betting and Brawling. Depression, health problems, financial worries, excessive drinking and gambling is part of a fraught mix....not forgetting being accused of handling stolen goods.
Sterland's troubles seem a world away from his footballing highs in a glittering career which encompassed golden times with Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Glasgow Rangers and, albeit briefly, England â€" allied to a fun-loving and larger-than-life persona he radiated to all and sundry.
His descent was triggered when he suffered a career-ending ankle injury in Leeds' champagne run to their first top-flight title since 1973-74, against Notts County in February 1992.
The challenge with Mark Draper ripped an ankle tendon and several abortive comebacks and four operations on and Sterland was forced to bow to the inevitable and hang up his boots 14 years ago.
Some seriously dark times have followed, but the 47-year-old is admirably confronting matters head on.
And while daily life remains a battle due to considerable health issues, Sterland is still standing tall with the support of his beloved wife Charmaine and a loyal circle of family and friends.
The best decision of his life arrived when he elected not to end it all after driving up to the secluded spot in the Peak District in his Mercedes before linking a hosepipe from the exhaust to the interior of the car and turning on the ignition. Thankfully, just before the fumes took hold, Sterland got his head together and cut short his suicide mission.
Looking back, Sterland, who served United with distinction after arriving from Ibrox in the summer of 1989, told the YEP: "Incidents like that make you stronger. Yes, I've had some down times, but I haven't been afraid to talk about them and it's all there in black and white in the book. It's all the truth that's in there.
"I look at things and think there are still a lot of people worse off than me.
"I've got a little grandson now, who is unbelievable. He's a great little kid and those sort of things inspire you.
"It's been hard at times, but you have to just move on. But I'm obviously disappointed about my health. I've got problems with deep vein thrombosis and cramps in my leg.
Some of my lungs are knackered, but you can't do nothing about it...I have it all on getting up the steps at home.
"But I keep taking my warfarin, various tablets and pain-killers and anti-depressants and the job's a good un!"
Sheffield-born Sterland rose to prominence as an attack-minded full-back with his boyhood heroes Wednesday, with Hillsborough fans affectionately nicknaming him "Zico".
Years of distinguished service under first Jack Charlton and then Howard Wilkinson ended when he headed north of the border in 1989.
But after a brief if fruitful cameo with Rangers, he headed back to Yorkshire and a familiar face in former mentor Wilkinson at Elland Road.
The Whites boss has always been there for Sterland, most notably when his father passed away and on another occasion when the then Hillsborough defender was consumed with worry after becoming convinced he was suffering from cancer after losing two stone in a month.
And while Wilkinson often turned a blind eye to the odd Sterland "excess" or two, he was comforted in the knowledge that his fellow- Sheffielder would never let him down when it mattered on the pitch.
So when his former Owls gaffer got in touch, joining forces again at United was the perfect pick-me-up for Sterland after a bittersweet time at Rangers.
His time at Leeds under Wilkinson remains a period he cherishes, and while it was cut short by injury, the respect he garnered from players, staff and supporters spoke volumes about the way he was thought of in West Yorkshire.
A whip-round among Leeds players when Sterland called it a day told its own story, with £1,500 raised to buy a specially inscribed watch.
That said, he might not have ended up at Elland Road in the first place, certainly if Trevor Francis or Ron Atkinson had anything to do with it.
Sterland said: "My time at Leeds was absolutely fantastic, I loved every minute of it. When I signed for Leeds from Glasgow Rangers, Howard said he was going to win the league and for a manager to say that and do it is something.
"To be fair, before I joined, I had talks with Queens Park Rangers, but didn't fancy going down to London. I could also have gone back to Wednesday, but didn't want to do that because Ron Atkinson offered me less money.
"But I met Howard at Nottingham and had talks and within a week or 10 days I think the deal was done.
"Wilko was brilliant and we ended up winning the second division and the old first division, which was unbelievable.
"He was a great influence on me. After my father died, Howard was like my second dad, if you like. When I needed help, Howard was always there. For me and my wife and my kids as well. He always got the best out of me and I could trust him.
And he could trust me and he trusted the players who he signed, which is half the battle for a manager.
"We were all honest players at Leeds and if you've got that, you've got a chance of winning anything really and we wanted to work hard for LeeADVERTISEMENTds United and the fans.
"He was a great guy and as a manager he was fantastic. He was well-organised and disciplined and his methods were successful both at Wednesday and Leeds United.
"Leeds were only getting about 11,000 when Howard took over and the directors and chairman ploughed money in and the club just took off under him.
"He brought some great players in â€" Chris Fairclough, Gordon Strachan, Chris Whyte, Tony Dorigo and Gary McAllister and the likes of Speedy (Gary Speed) and (David) Batty, who were there as kids anyway.
"Speedy's still playing now, he must be a robot!
"Gordon was the best player I played with, by far. He was a great professional with a great attitude for the game and he's still enjoying it now.
"There were also some really top characters. I remember Vinnie Jones, who was a funny guy. A fantastic, super guy in fact. He was such a character in the dressing room and on the pitch as well.
"People had an image of Vinnie, but a lot of people didn't realise he did such a lot of work for charity as well.
"We had some great nights out. Gordon used to sort all that out and get the wives involved and it's not like that at a lot of football clubs."
On his specific on-the-pitch highs, Sterland added: "The 40-yarder against Sheffield United (a 2-2 draw at Bramall Lane in 1988-89) was fantastic and stood out for me and then scoring past Schmeichel against Manchester United â€" not a lot of people do that.
"I also distinctly remember going down to Bournemouth and having to win the game to lift the old second division title. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was baking hot, there were thousands of Leeds fans and Chris Kamara getting down the right wing and crossing and Chappy (Lee Chapman) scoring, which was fantastic.
"I remember getting on the bus on the way back from Bournemouth thinking there's plenty of champagne and I don't bloody like it!
"But I drank it, and it was a fantastic trip back. We just played cards and had such a laugh on the way back, while knowing we'd won the championship. We then won the big prize in the top division and I didn't think we'd win it as early as we did. People say Man United lost it, but we battled and had honest players and deserved it."
Sterland was crocked when the Whites lifted the Division One silverware and his footballing story promptly unravelled, while a new battle began. But despite his considerable troubles and hardships, Sterland â€" blessed with the riches of family and memories of a glorious career to look back on â€" is not bitter about how things have gone.
Although he does hanker for one aspect of not playing anymore…
"I don't really miss it, I just miss one day of the month. Payday!" he said.
"But, seriously, I had a great playing career, but that's gone now. I remember at the end I was having pain-killers and cortisones to play and I think it took its toll.
"I had four operations on my ankle and there was no way I was going to get playing as a full-time footballer again.
"It's difficult to hold your hands up and say 'Look, I'm going to pack in'. But things have to be done and that's what I did.
"I remember leaving Leeds. They bought me a really expensive watch and then I had it bloody stolen!
"I remember Howard saying that in all his years at a football club, he'd never had a collection of so much for a player who was retiring. Gordon organised it and the lads were brilliant."

Poyet departs Spurs

Former Leeds United assistant manager Gustavo Poyet has been sacked from his role as first-team coach of Tottenham Hotspur.
The Uruguayan, who left Leeds last October to take up his post under Juande Ramos at White Hart Lane, parted company with Spurs on Saturday night following the club's disastrous start to the term.
Ramos was also shown the door after less than a year in charge of Tottenham, making way for ex-Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp to take over the hotseat at White Hart Lane.
Poyet worked as Leeds United's assistant for 12 months after arriving at Elland Road with former boss Dennis Wise towards the end of 2006.

The Sun ranker tidenes britiske spiller i utenlandsk fotball.
Ikke overraskende på topp; vår egen John Charles - foran Keegan, Waddle, Becks, Platt, McManaman, med flere...

No1: John Charles
Charles was nicknamed Il Gigante Buono â€" The Gentle Giant â€" during his five thrilling years with Juventus. The Welsh hitman scored well over a goal every other game before his departure in 1962. Charles won three league titles and was later voted as the club's best ever foreigner, ahead of even Michel Platini.

Hull to splash out on Newcastle striker Smith

Hull City boss Phil Brown is chasing Newcastle United striker Alan Smith.
The News of the World says Smith has not played a single game for the Toon this season and is one of the many stars desperate to leave St James' Park.
He was hoping to join Everton earlier this season but the deal fell through - and now Brown is poised to offer the former Manchester United striker a chance to resurrect his top-flight career.
Smith could join the Tigers on loan until the end of the season with a view to making the deal permanent for around £3million.

Ameobi - returns to Doncaster.

AMEOBI BACK WITH DONCASTER
Doncaster striker Tomi Ameobi has returned to the Keepmoat Stadium following a month's loan at Grimsby.
The 20-year-old made three appearances for the Mariners but fell out of favour when Mike Newell took over as manager of the League Two strugglers.
Ameobi told Rovers' official site: "I started in two games while at Grimsby and I felt that I did quite well.
"Despite that, the results didn't go the way that everybody with the club wanted them to.
"A new manager came in and he has said that he wants to try new things."

Burnley fans are desperate to buy replica copies of Robbie Blake's pants. The striker dropped his shorts after scoring last week revealing a pair of red pants with the words 'Bad Beat Bob.'
Burnley have ordered more replicas after the first 50 pairs sold out. (The Sun)

Yorath (pictured) arrives at Railway via Koolsport Northern Counties East League side Thackley having originally been on the books at Sheffield Wednesday and Halifax Town.
Earlier this year he played for the English Universities and Team Northumbria whilst in the final year of his planning and development surveying degree at Northumbria University (....)

Ex-Leeds and Reds ace shrugs off disease to shine
Former Leeds United and Liverpool winger Harry Kewell brushed off speculation over his health to score in Galatasaray's 3-1 victory over Gaziantepspor in the Turkish Super Lig.
Kewell, released by Liverpool at the end of last season, opened the scoring after 10 minutes to dampen speculation that his future was in doubt.
Reports emerged over the weekend that the 30-year-old had been hit by hepatitis and was putting his team-mates at risk of infection.
Kewell's representatives confirmed that the player has autoimmune hepatitis, a non-contagious form of the disease, which he has been suffering from since childhood.
The Aussie winger now has seven goals from 13 appearances for Galatasaray.

Greg's hoping it's a case of seconds in for manager's job at Cumbrians

Greg Abbott is hoping that his second opportunity as caretaker manager of Carlisle will be luckier than his first.
Football being the cut-throat business it is, he has also accepted that his failure to stabilise the Cumbrian club in the lead up to Christmas would be liable to leave him without a job.
The former Leeds United academy coach has stepped onto the fine tightrope from which many capable understudies have fallen.
John Carver â€" a coach who Carlisle courted around the time when Abbott was named as their assistant two years ago â€" saw his ambition of managing Leeds wrecked by a desperate spell as caretaker in 2006, a reign which imploded so severely that Carver was forced to leave Elland Road and make way for Dennis Wise.

VIF vurderer Harte-kontrakt

Jordan opts to leave Pompey

Former Manchester United, Leeds United and AC Milan striker Joe Jordan has decided to leave his coaching role at Portsmouth.
The 56-year-old Scot had spent the last four years at Fratton Park but was believed to have been unhappy when he was overlooked for the manager's job last month.

JOE JORDAN

Pompey, who decided Tony Adams was the man to replace Harry Redknapp, said in a brief statement: "Portsmouth Football Club would like to thank Joe for his significant contribution during four successful years at Fratton Park and wish him well for the future."
Meanwhile, owner Alexandre Gaydamak is confident Adams can build on the foundations Redknapp has laid at Fratton Park.
Rumours continue to surface regarding Pompey's financial situation, but Gaydamak says: I'll back Tony 100 percent - otherwise why would I make him the manager?
"He's fully backed by myself and the board and he's aware of that. I never interfered with football matters when Harry Redknapp was manager and I will not interfere with football matters now that Tony Adams is manager.
"My job is to give him the tools to deliver. Whatever he decides, it's his call.
"We're in the Premier League, which is the best league in the world, but now we also get the chance to play AC Milan in Europe - it's fantastic.
"It's about growth. We want to finish in the top-ten again and go as far as we can in Europe. The FA Cup is a lottery but hopefully we can win the lottery again.
"I'm extremely grateful for what Harry has done. I think it's normal that when an opportunity to manage a huge club like Tottenham comes along, a manager of his calibre should take it. I'm happy for him and wish him all the best.
"He leaves us a strong legacy and we have to take up the challenge.

HUCKERBY RULES OUT NORWICH RETURN

Former Norwich striker Darren Huckerby has ruled out a return to the club on a short-term deal after returning home for the MLS close season.
The 32-year-old was at Carrow Road for five years before leaving for the San Jose Earthquakes last summer, and Huckerby insists he will not be following in fellow MLS star David Beckham's boots and finding football over the winter.
"I don't want to add fuel to the fire or anything like that because we all know that's not going to happen," Huckerby told the Norwich Evening News.
"Everything comes to an end. I got to grips with it fairly quickly that my time was done here and just because the team aren't doing so well, it's not as easy as that."
Huckerby, who made over 200 appearances for the Canaries, has also ruled out moving to any other team because he does not want to come up against his former club.
"My stance has been pretty clear from day one. I won't play against Norwich," added Huckerby.

I couldn't resist Spurs job, says new first-team coach Jordan

Joe Jordan said the lure of teaming up again with Harry Redknapp was too great to resist after confirming he had joined Tottenham 24 hours after quitting Portsmouth.
The former Scotland striker, 56, left his job as first-team coach at Pompey, where he had worked under Redknapp, on Friday and will take up a similar role at Spurs.

Middlesbrough boss Southgate: I wanted Villa's Milner
Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate admits Aston Villa beat them for former Newcastle winger James Milner.
“We liked him, James is a very good player,” said Southgate.
“There was a spell when he nearly joined Villa before and we had an interest and I don’t think we could afford to do it at the time. Newcastle had taken him back and we certainly couldn’t have afforded to do it this summer at that sort of price.
“The fee didn’t surprise me though, Villa gave us £6m for a full-back (Luke Young). If you have the money and you want the player enough, the fee is fairly irrelevant. It’s about getting the players you want.”

Plymouth defender Simon Walton has rejected a loan move to Crewe. (Daily Star)

Walton chooses to fight for place

Plymouth Argyle's record signing Simon Walton is to stay at Home Park after turning down the chance to join Crewe Alexandra on loan.
The 21-year-old has only made six appearances for Argyle since signing for £750,000 from QPR in August.
But manager Paul Sturrock said he has decided to stay at Argyle and fight to regain his place in the team.
"I think there's things in his game that he's going to have to change and he's agreed," he told BBC Spotlight.
"The only place we're going to do that is in reserve games and on the training ground," Sturrock added.
And the Argyle boss said that Walton's early promise at Leeds United five years ago has hampered him tactically.
"Walts has been brought up as a first-team player from 16-years-old and I do feel a lack of development work has been done on him.
"He has all the credentials to be a quality player, he's proved that, but he's got to prove to me the tactical side when the other team has got the ball and also when we've got the ball."

Lions won't go for Carole: Jackett feels he has enough options out wide

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett has opted not to pursue his interest in former Leeds United winger Seb Carole.
The Frenchman has been training with Millwall recently, having been without a club since leaving Leeds in the early weeks of the season.
However, after taking a look at Carole on trial, Jackett believes he already has enough options in his Lions squad.
"We had a look at Seb," said Jackett. "He trained with us for a short period, but at the moment my options in wide positions are okay.
"I have been pleased with the progress of my own wide players."
Carole had trained with French outfit Le Havre in the summer before being released by Leeds, where he made 52 appearances after joining from Brighton in 2006.

Nearly man Stewart loved life at Leeds

Where are they now - David Stewart
Safe keeping of a different sort has been occupying the attentions of ex-Whites custodian David Stewart since he hung up his goalkeeping gloves.
It's fair to say the Scot â€" second fiddle to compatriot David Harvey for the lion's share of his five-year stint in West Yorkshire â€" didn't have much luck during his time south of the border with Leeds.
And also with the teams he subsequently joined â€" West Brom and Swansea â€" for that matter.
Now 61, Stewart â€" chiefly remembered by United fans for featuring in the side who infamously lost out in the 1975 European Cup final â€" works in a jewellers in Swansea, having resided in South Wales after calling time on his playing career which started at Kilsyth Rangers before moving onto Ayr.
That balmy spring night in Paris in the mid-seventies should have represented the high point of Glasgow-born Stewart's career, but unspeakably bad officiating and mayhem on the terraces tarnished the crowning glory for United's golden generation.
Over 33 years on and Stewart, who joined Leeds in October 1973, admits the massively controversial 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich still rankles with him. That said, time has made him a great deal more philosophical about one of the most painful episodes in the club's history.
On that fateful evening, Stewart told the YEP: "It was a game we probably deserved to win. But the referee made some bad decisions. We were really angry at the time, but it's one of those things.
"I actually watched the film of the match not so long ago, and I still can't believe how bad the decisions were. But there's not a lot you can do now, that's football.
"It was an epic game and Bayern were a really good team at the time, but so were we and we did enough to win and obviously should have. But there you are...
"It would have been nice to have a winners' medal on the mantelpiece, but it wasn't to be I'm afraid."
Stewart, thrust into the limelight during United's run to the final of Europe's blue riband competition, added: "David (Harvey) had a car accident and I played at Anderlecht and Barcelona, home and away.
"I couldn't remember too much about the Anderlecht games, but remember playing at the Nou Camp, which was amazing. It was such a good night in front of such a big crowd.
"There was something like 100,000 there. We were 2-1 up from the first leg and then we scored early on through Peter (Lorimer).
They equalised, but we managed to hang on thankfully and I played quite well.
"David was fit again, but I managed to play in the final, having played the majority of the (European) matches and I can still say I played in a European Cup final."
That Parisian pinnacle was a rare moment on the centre stage for Stewart, with Harvey soon reclaiming his position between the posts the following season and the Glaswegian copped bench duties again.
Stewart ultimately switched to West Brom in November 1978, but despite his United career largely not getting out of second gear, he insists he thoroughly enjoyed his Elland Road stint, even though it was largely in the shadows.
Stewart â€" who started 74 games in just over five years, said: "You couldn't beat it. At the end of the day, I was lucky enough to play for Leeds and enjoyed every minute of it.
"I always got on great with David and we were quite friendly. We went to the races together a few times and we got on okay.
"I remember first coming to Leeds. It was a big surprise, Leeds were a top side back then and I couldn't believe it, to be honest.
"There were a few Scots there already, like Peter (Lorimer), Joe (Jordan) and Gordon (McQueen), so I suppose that made it a bit easier.
"I signed as cover, but I just thought 'it's Leeds United and we'll see how it goes'.
"Gary (Sprake) had just gone to Birmingham and even though I was coming in as cover, Leeds were the best team in the country along with the likes of Liverpool and Man United as well. They were such a good side and every player was a household name.
"Signing for Leeds then was like signing for Man United now. You could hardly turn them down â€" if somebody said now 'come and sign for Man U', you'd be off!
"The problem was that Leeds were going so well in the league and had gone on that long run undefeated that I thought I don't want to go in here and be the one who is chipped over by a striker and then the ball goes into the back of the net and we lose 2-0 or something!
"All I could do was bide my time. David was playing well at the time and I was playing in the reserves â€" and went with the first team a few times as well â€" and there wasn't a lot I could do, except give it the best I could in the reserves and hope for a chance.
"I enjoyed it under Don (Revie), although I only came in the October and he was gone in the summer. Brian (Clough) came in and I was only a (first-team) pool player at the time and hardly spoke to him really.
It was a bit bewildering in terms of what was going on at the time!"
After switching to the Hawthorns, Stewart endured a nightmare before heading to up-and-coming Swansea, where his luck belatedly changed for the better.
John Toshack's Swans crop were rising up the divisions at a rate of knots with Stewart an ever-present in the club's promotion to the top-flight promised land for the first time in their history in 1980-81.
Heady days at the Vetch were commonplace, but just when the party was getting in full swing, Stewart found himself on the sidelines again.
That summer, Toshack swooped to sign Welsh international Dai Davies and was handed the no.1 jersey for the Swans' first-ever game in the top tier, ironically a 5-1 success over Leeds!
On life after leaving Leeds, Stewart â€" who made his lone appearance for Scotland against East Germany in 1978 when he saved a penalty, said: "I joined West Brom and it didn't work out for me. I was there about 15 months and never played a game! I got a bad injury and Tony Godden was quite settled in the first team and I couldn't get back in.
"It was very frustrating, Tony was playing well and that was it and I ended up going to Swansea. That's where I finished playing and I'm settled here now.
"They were in the second division when I went and I played half a season and then a full season when Swansea got promoted to the first division. We were a good side, and had signed quite a few ex-Liverpool players and the like. But the club then signed Dai Davies when they were promoted and I was out."
Stewart still follows the game on the periphery in rugby-mad South Wales, managing to get to the odd Swansea match when work commitments allow.
He added: "I had a couple of jobs when I finished playing. I was the manager of a carpet store for a number of years and then got a chance to do what I'm doing now. I took the chance and am still in the job 20 years on. I work most Saturdays and the only chance I get to watch football is on a Wednesday.
"I go to watch the Swans now and again. They've got a nice new stadium and are a good side with a good manager and they play football the right way.
"Rugby dominates to a certain extent. But there's a big following for football as well with Cardiff and Swansea, who are playing at the end of this month and that will be another battle and they'll be kicking lumps out of each other again.
"The game's a lot quicker now and players are a lot F***er. There's quite a lot more money now and the game's moved on â€" I bet Stanley Matthews said that as well once!
"I was up in Leeds about two or three years ago. Paul Reaney rang me and said a few of the boys were meeting up and Leeds were playing Fulham. John Charles, Bobby Collins and Allan Clarke were there and a few other of the boys I played with. When I was there, I was quite friendly with Trevor Cherry and Paul (Reaney).
"I'm sorry to see the team are in the position they are in now.
It's awful, hopefully they'll get back into the top (division), but I think it's going to take a little bit longer yet."

Dennis Wise on his bike soon from executive Newcastle role
Dennis Wise's fragile hold on his position as part of the Newcastle United hierarchy is close to breaking point.
With Joe Kinnear's role extended from interim boss on a monthly deal to manager until the end of the season, as first revealed in Sportsmail five weeks ago, Wise, the executive director (football), looks likely to go in the near future.
The irony will not be lost on Kevin Keegan, who quit in September claiming he had little control over team affairs, a responsibility that at the time was shared by Wise and chief scout Tony Jimenez.
Multi-millionaire property dealer Jimenez left shortly after owner Mike Ashley and chairman Derek Llambias failed to turn up for a meeting with prospective Arab buyers which Jimenez had arranged in Dubai.
With no other potential purchasers on the horizon, Ashley will stay in control for the foreseeable future.

Grimsby make player/coach offer to Blackburn's Fowler
Grimsby boss Mike Newell has held exploratory talks with Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler, currently with Blackburn, about a player/coaching role at the League Two strugglers.
Grimsby chairman John Fenty claims Fowler is waiting to see what his future holds at Blackburn before making a decision on Grimsby's offer.
"The situation is this: A couple of weeks ago the manager had some discussions with Robbie and then he asked me if we could potentially take it forward for Robbie to come in some sort of playing/coaching capacity," Fenty told the club's official website.
"That has come about because of Mike's friendship with him and also the fact that it had been mooted that Robbie has said that he wanted to get onto the management ladder.
"Obviously, we saw a potential opportunity here, and after discussing it through with Robbie, it was quite clear that Robbie wants to keep playing at the highest level possible for as long as he possibly can.
"He is now waiting for Blackburn to clarify their position. He is under contract there until December.
"There is a real chance, and logically it is likely to happen this way, in that he gets a contract extension at Blackburn.
"If this doesn't happen, there is a glimmer of a chance that he might come to Grimsby.
"In truth, we were trying to avoid this becoming a public issue but I think I needed to clarify the situation with regards Robbie Fowler.
"It wasn't meant to get out, I don't know how it was leaked, to that extent I feel that it needs this clarification."

Wigan's King waiting for Hull to make call
Marlon King admits he's not had word from Hull City about a permanent deal.
King has been one of Phil Brown's successful additions and is expected to turn his loan move from Wigan into a permanent deal during the transfer window.
But he cautiously said: "January hasn't come, so I can't speculate on stuff.
"It's all right me being happy at Hull. But if Hull don't want me then it's a different case altogether.
"The window doesn't open until next month, and I don't know anything about any move yet.
"I know it's a season-long loan - and I want to do my best for Hull City."

Us look at Maybury
Colchester have handed a trial to former Leicester and Leeds defender Alan Maybury.
The 30-year-old ex-Republic of Ireland international has been training with the Us following a trial with Bristol City, and is in line to appear in this week's Essex Senior Cup tie against Romford at the Community Stadium.
Maybury is currently without a club after his release by Leicester in May, having had a spell on loan with Aberdeen towards the end of last season.

Hull boss Brown: Barmby will have contract chance
Hull City boss Phil Brown says veteran midfielder Nicky Barmby will be given every chance to win a new contract.
He told the Hull Daily Mail: "People have got to play games to get in my mind with regards to a new contract.
"Nick is not a foolish man, he is a very intelligent lad, so he'll know that as well as anybody.
"He knew he needed to get out of the treatment room as quickly as he possibly could and he knew that he had to put a shift in on the training ground on a daily basis.
"That gets him in the team and that will be the key to him getting a new contract."
Barmby was selected for a key role in the Championship play-offs - featuring in all three historic games.
A starting role in City's first ever Premier League fixture against Fulham also showed his manager's faith.
"He's like a young boy who just wants to play, he's like Peter Pan" added Brown.
"He gets out on the training ground and he's always the bright, bubbly one.
"He's a top-of-the-ground player. Even if it's knee-deep in mud, he'll be floating on top of the ground.
"He's got a flighty, sharp style of play and he's always one step ahead. He knows where the next pass is going quicker than anyone else.
"That kind of brilliance, and that's all you can call it, is something that's needed at this club."

Blackburn boss Ince: Fowler won't join Grimsby
Blackburn Rovers boss Paul Ince has poured cold water on the prospect of Robbie Fowler moving to Grimsby.
Ince has yet to hear from Grimsby boss Mike Newell, a former Blackburn striker, and said: "I can't see him going to Grimsby, to be fair.
"It's been hard for Robbie, getting him on to the pitch in the situation we have been in. But he is fantastic around the dressing room, a real character, and he wants to get on the pitch and show he can still score goals."
The former Leeds player's deal expires at the end of this month, but Ince added: "We will sit down in a couple of weeks and see where he goes from there."

Rio Ferdinand hatet Manchester United

- En United-tilhenger kom bort til meg en gang og sa «Jeg skal vedde for du ville elske å komme til oss», og jeg svarte: «Jeg kommer aldri til å gå dit». - Rio Ferdinand

Ganske sikkert at han hadde den holdningen da han spilte for Leeds, bare synd at vi hadde så øknomiske problemer at vi måtte selge han...

Back from the brink

The rise and fall of Leeds United can be told in three episodes starring Jonathan Woodgate. The high-flying success with all its attendant madness is perhaps encapsulated in the story of the Woodgate passport. Convening at Leeds-Bradford airport in 2001 for a European trip, there was a moment of panic among the Leeds contingent when the centre-half was asked for his passport. "You told me to put it somewhere safe," protested Woodgate to Leeds officials. "So I did. It's in the safe at home." Cue a charter jet detour to Teesside.
The second episode is darker. The arrest and trial of the England defender after a drunken night out left a student severely injured on the ground was emblematic of a period of excess that led to severe recrimination. Woodgate was convicted of affray in 2001 and sentenced to community service.
The departure of Woodgate to Newcastle United in 2003 was the moment when the Leeds dream was interrupted by the roaring fury of the fans. "There is a perception that I left because of the debt," says Peter Ridsdale, the high-profile chairman of the soaring club of the early millennium. "I did not. I went because the fans turned against me."

Ridsdale, who oversaw a Leeds campaign that ended in the semi-finals of the Champions League, has stayed in football to watch the Yorkshire club lose to Histon in the FA Cup. The irony runs deeper. As Leeds seem to lurch from one crisis to another, Ridsdale has redeemed himself as chairman of Cardiff City, with the Welsh club reaching last year's FA Cup final and now in the race for promotion to the Barclays Premier League.
He is not smug. But he is not shy, either. "The debt at Leeds was £78.9m," says Ridsdale, "but I never felt that was the major issue in my departure. The fans made it clear they wanted me to go, so I went. The debt was manageable." Ridsdale, who had a successful career in business before entering the world of football, was hounded out by cries of Judas and attacks, both personal and physical.
However, he retains much of the swagger he had when he, David O'Leary and a youthful Leeds team marched across Europe and threatened to be the challengers to Manchester United for dominance in England. "The subsequent demise of Leeds United was down to poor decisions," he says of the aftermath of his departure. Ridsdale, who is brutally honest about his shortcomings in United We Fall (Pan, £7.99), his memoir of the heady days, is also candid about the fate of the club.
"I believe they would not be in this situation if I had been allowed to carry on," he says. Ridsdale says in his book: "I could not be sorrier for what has happened to that great club, and my part in the tragedy." But this is not an acceptance of all the blame for the downfall of Leeds. Ridsdale has taken the opportunity to answer his critics. But he has not demanded money for that privilege. All proceeds from a compelling book will go to a hospice.
So what went wrong? The Cardiff City chairman blames the collapse at Elland Road on buying "too many big-name players because that overloaded the wage structure, which buckled when we failed on the pitch". But he says: "In the five and a half years that I was chairman at Leeds we finished in the top five four times. I left them with a team that included Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka, Oliver Dacourt, Paul Robinson and other top players. Aaron Lennon and James Milner were coming through. This was not a side who should have been relegated."
He adds: "I didn't believe they appointed the right manager and questions need to be asked about decision making." Ridsdale is convinced that Eddie Gray was unsuitable for the Elland Road job.
"I was sure of the man I wanted at Leeds," says Ridsdale. "I approached Martin O'Neill three times about the job." The Northern Irishman rebuffed the overtures from Yorkshire when he was at Leicester City and twice when he was at Celtic. Ridsdale now watches O'Neill taking Aston Villa forward and wonders what might have been at Leeds. "He's an outstanding manager," says Ridsdale simply. As a chairman, he has worked with a few. O'Leary does not emerge shining from United We Fall.
Ridsdale claims he should have refused his manager funds to buy Robbie Fowler and Seth Johnson, "two deals too far". He also states that O'Leary lost the dressing room after the publication of his book, United on Trial. Peter Reid is given credit for keeping United up but Ridsdale says he should never have been given the job permanently. His summation of the Terry Venables era is biting: "It had all gone wrong under Terry. In fact, it had never gone right."
Now, though, Ridsdale has a harmonious relationship with Dave Jones at Cardiff. "I made mistakes at Leeds," he says, "but that has helped me to become a better chairman at Cardiff."
The past, however, has not dulled his ambition. "We are moving into a £48m stadium next year. We are a one-city club. More than 1.6m people live within a 30-minute drive of the stadium. The nearest geographical competition in Premiership terms is in London or in Birmingham with Aston Villa."
The club has reached a "very amicable" agreement with Langston, a company who were pursuing Cardiff for a chunk of cash. "We have no major debt," insists Ridsdale.
He adds, however, that the problem of debt can be over-stated. "If a debts are serviceable, then there is no problem. Look at Manchester United. They can service their debt with their profits. I would be more concerned about a club such as Chelsea who rely on one major beneficiary to service their debt." But Ridsdale is happy for the moment to keep Cardiff's balance sheet on an even keel. "We have invested in a measured way," he says of the club's acquisitions.
"We will take nothing for granted and will carry on doing what I believe to be right." He concedes, however, that the club was "very lucky" to secure Ross McCormack from Motherwell "at a bargain price because he was out of contract".
McCormack has helped Cardiff to seventh in the league. The dream is the Premier League. The nightmare for Ridsdale is over.

Spring - on loan from Luton.

SPRING KEEN ON PERMANENT BLADES DEAL
On-loan Sheffield United midfielder Matthew Spring has revealed he wants to make his move to Bramall Lane permanent.
The 29-year-old, who has just recovered from an ankle injury, is on a year-long loan from League Two side Luton and has appeared nine times scoring one goal for Kevin Blackwell's side in the opening few months of the campaign.
But after moving his family to South Yorkshire, the former Watford player says he is determined to win a new deal.
He told BBC Radio Sheffield: "That's the aim, I've got the kids up here now and they're in school so I'd love to stay.
He added: "Hopefully something will happen soon and I will be offered a new contract."
