Former Leeds United striker retires from football
JIMMY FLOYD HASSELBAINK has announced his retirement from football, at the age of 36.
The Holland international scored 34 goals in 69 games between 1997 and 1999 while playing for Leeds United, before moving to Atletico Madrid.
Middlesbrough connection takes Hasselbaink to McClaren's FC Twente
Former Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren is adding his ex-striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to his backroom team at FC Twente.

Southgate backs ex-Middlesbrough pal Hasselbaink for coaching success
Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has backed former teammate Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to enjoy a successful coaching career.
Hasselbaink has joined Steve McClaren's staff at FC Twente and Southgate told the Sunday Sun: "Someone said I should have signed him last year!
“He was excellent in his time here and I’m sure he’ll be good whatever he turns his hand to, because he’s very enthusiastic and dedicated. Whatever he does, he’ll want to do well.
“He’s doing his coaching badges and he’s got good opinions on the game. I enjoyed working with him. He’s had that upbringing through Dutch football and played in Europe, in Portugal and England. So he’s got good experience.
“I think he’ll want to pass that experience on. I don’t know if he wants to coach or manage but whatever he wants to do he’ll do it wholeheartedly, and want to make a success of it, that’s for sure.”

Milner a threat to O'Neill's Villa job
James Milner is a major threat to Martin O'Neill's Aston Villa job!
The former Newcastle and Leeds winger explained: "I have never started and finished a season with the same manager in the six or seven years I have been playing.
"Hopefully, that is not a bad omen for the gaffer!
"There have been problems troubling clubs I have been with in the past and those experiences have matured me as a player - definitely."

SINNOTT OUSTED AT VALE
Port Vale have dismissed manager Lee Sinnott after the club's disappointing start to the season.
The League Two outfit have lost their last four games in all competitions and have won just two of their nine matches so far this term.
A section of Vale fans called for Sinnott to be sacked after Saturday's 4-1 home defeat to Macclesfield and the club's board wasted no time in acting.

MARINERS SET TO HAUL IN AMEOBI
Doncaster striker Tomi Ameobi is poised to join Grimsby on a one-month loan deal to gain some valuable first-team experience.
The 20-year-old has yet to make a senior appearance for Rovers after signing from Leeds in the summer and now moves to Blundell Park.
Ameobi could make his debut against Barnet on Saturday and becomes caretaker manager Stuart Watkiss' second signing in a day after he swooped to lure Huddersfield midfielder Malvin Kamara to the club.

Scott Sellars reveals his biggest regret

LEAVING Ewood Park was always going to tug at the heart strings of Scott Sellars but the chance to return to newly-crowned champions Leeds United and prove his boyhood club wrong was just too big a lure to resist.
After a six-year spell at Ewood Park spanning over two hundred appearances and ending in promotion to the top flight, via an emotional Wembley play-off final, the stylish midfielder was crossing the pennines with a satisfied feeling of ‘job done’.
Just a year later his dream move ‘home’ had turned sour though and, with his former club and real love’ at the start of what was to be a memorable Premier League adventure, Sellars cannot help but look back and think ‘what if’?
He went on to enjoy successful times at Rovers’ opponents tomorrow, Newcastle United, before spending four years at Bolton, but the former Ewood favourite still describes leaving Blackburn as his “biggest career regret”.
Now teamed up with former Rovers team-mate Lee Richardson, as his assistant manager at League Two Chesterfield, Sellars is enjoying giving youngsters the same chance he was given all those years back â€" admitting the top flight dream has disappeared for many.
He believes it was his move from Leeds to Rovers in 1986 that paved the way for an illustrious top flight career and, with a Full Members Cup winners medal, an England Under 23 cap and promotion on his CV, his time at Ewood will never be forgotten.
He said: “We were so close to promotion for so long.
“Bobby Saxton brought me to the club and it was such a relief when we finally won promotion by beating Leicester in the play-off final.
“That Wembley final was my last game for Blackburn and was one of the happiest moments of my career. We had wanted promotion for so long and finally we did it.
“Leeds had just won the First Division title the season before though and I felt I still had a point to prove at the club, having come through the ranks at Elland Road, I know now it was the wrong decision.”
Immediately after Sellars’ departure in 1992, Jack Walker’s millions saw the arrival of the likes of Alan Shearer, Graeme Le Saux and Kevin Gallacher to spark the start of a brand new dawn.
They quickly emerged as Premier League contenders, finally winning the trophy in 1995, proving to Sellars he had made his biggest mistake.
“I had six great seasons at Blackburn and it was where I established myself as a player,” he said. “My move to Leeds was a bad move because it just never worked out.
“It is my biggest regret although I loved my time at Newcastle, where I eventually lost my place to an outstanding David Ginola, and at all the other clubs I have been at since.
“Jack Walker totally changed things around at Blackburn and maybe I should have stayed to see if I could have been part of it. You can’t look back in football though.”
Still addicted by the ‘football bug’, Sellars has taken his first steps into the world of management and is loving every minute of it.
A coaching role at Mansfield was followed by a similar position at Sheffield United, before being re-uinted with Richardson at Chesterfield in 2004.
He said: “I knew I wanted to get into coaching and was taking my badges even before I had stopped playing.
“Obviously I have known Lee a long time. We won promotion together at Blackburn and then got together at Huddersfield Town again.
“I was coaching at Sheffield United when he asked if I wanted to join him at Chesterfield and I am really enjoying myself and enjoying the step up from youth football.”
While many of his Rovers successors are still living off the glory of Premier League triumph, just three seasons on from his departure, Sellars has been experiencing life at the other end of the game but loving every minute of it.
The 47-year-old though believes the game has changed dramatically since his time as a player, revealing the influx of money has helped improve the lower leagues.
He said: “I was obviously at Blackburn before Jack Walker’s money and at the time, like a lot of clubs, they were taking the chance on younger players.
“That does not seem to happen as much anymore. If you look at squads in the Premier League, they are huge, and with the increase in foreign players it has become much harder for the kids.
“Without a doubt the quality in the lower leagues has become far, far better than it used to be, because these youngsters are filtering down to our level.
“From our point of view, we have to look at youngsters who are being released by Premier League sides and giving them their chance to work their way back up.”
As two of his former clubs go head-to-head at St James’ Park tomorrow, Sellars will have all his focus on the Spireites home clash with Brentford - but will allow himself a quick sneak at full time.
He said: “I keep an eye out for all my old clubs results, especially Blackburn and Newcastle, but on matchdays I normally have enough to worry about myself nowadays.”

Vinnie: Let me help

VINNIE JONES has told Joe Kinnear: Let me help you knock Newcastle into shape.
The former midfield tough-guy turned Hollywood actor was Kinnear’s captain at Wimbledon and has been stunned at the way the new Newcastle boss has been mocked.
But Jones, 43, revealed: “I’d be back in England like a shot if Joe wanted any help.
“I’m sure he will be able to turn the club around and if he feels I’d be able to contribute in any way, I’d get the next plane back from LA.
“I’m not filming for a few weeks so there is absolutely nothing to stop me if I get a call.”
Kinnear has already taken stick from many fans and does not even officially start as successor to Kevin Keegan until Monday.
Jones added: “Joe will be better than the fans think. He was probably the best man-manager I ever played for because he treated players like adults.
“He will breeze into Newcastle and I can guarantee he will make everyone feel at ease because he won’t be overawed by what is in front of him.”

Fra leedsunited-mad.co.uk's serie "Leeds Cult Figures":

Micky Adams
We take a look at former Leeds left-back Micky Adams.
Michael, Richard Adams (Born Sheffield, November 8, 1961)
Played for the Whites 1986-1988 (88 apps with 1 sub app and 3 goals)
Adams' left boot helped fire Leeds to our first FA Cup semi-final for 10 years. His long-range shot at windswept Wigan set up a 2-0 win and a Hillsborough showdown with his old club Coventry City.
Adams, a raiding left-back, had only joined United from the Sky Blues 10 weeks before that epic 1987 semi in which Leeds lost 3-2.
The former England Youth international did not make the grade at Sheffield United but he shone at Gillingham prompting a step up to the First Division with Coventry before his switch to Elland Road (£110000).
Two years later United more than doubled their money when he moved onto Southampton (£250000).
At 34 he became the youngest manager operating in the League when he combined a player/manager role at Fulham, taking over from Ian Branfoot in March 1996 with the London club languishing in 91st place in the league.
After he had help the club avoid non-league football, Fulham were promoted to Division Two as runners-up the following season.
Following the takeover of Fulham by Mohammed Al Fayed, Adams was dismissed as manager in September 1997 in favour of Kevin Keegan (Director of Football) and Ray Wilkins (Head Coach).
Shortly after his dismissal from Fulham, Adams made a quick return to management with Swansea City in Division Three but left after 13 days.
Adams claimed that the money he had been promised to strengthen the team had not been forthcoming, but within days he had joined Brentford.
Adams took his third job of the 1997-98 season when he was named manager of Brentford in place of Eddie May who had been appointed in the summer of '97.
But Brentford were relegated to Division Three on the last day of the season, and the club was bought out by Ron Noades who installed himself as the new boss.
Adams was caretaker-manager for Nottingham Forest for a single Premiership game in 1998-99, which he lost.
He returned to management in April 1999 with Division Three strugglers Brighton & Hove Albion.
In his second full season as manager, Adams guided Brighton to promotion as Division Three champions in 2000-01 after the club had spent five seasons in the league's basement division.
Adams left Brighton to become assistant manager to Dave Bassett at Leicester City.
Adams was then promoted to the manager's seat while Bassett became Director of Football after the club were relegated from the top division.
He guided them back to the Premiership at the first attempt as they ended the 2002-03 season as Division One runners-up behind champions Portsmouth.
But Leicester slipped back down again in 2003-04 in 18th place, along with Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Adams resigned as Leicester manager in October 2004 after a poor start to the Coca Cola League Championship campaign.
In January 2005, Adams made a return to management in the Coca Cola Championship with struggling Coventry City, a club he had been at during his playing career.
He managed to save the club from relegation that year. He was expected by some to mount a challenge for promotion to the Premiership in 2005-06, which was the club's first season in the new Ricoh Arena.
The team started out poorly, but improved in the second half of the season to rise up the table.
However despite excellent home form, he could only guide Coventry as high as 8th, missing out on a play-off place.
On January 17, 2007 the club parted company with Adams, with Coventry lying 16th in the Championship.
Adams was appointed by Colchester United as assistant manager to Geraint Williams replacing Mick Harford who had left the previous month.
He subsequently left this role in January 2008, stating that he wanted to return to management.
In May 2008, Adams returned to Brighton, taking over from Dean Wilkins.

Jets sign Griffiths on long-term deal

Newcastle Jets have secured the services of reigning Jonny Warren Medallist Joel Griffiths for the next three years.
In a major coup for the Jets, Griffiths will become the club’s marquee player until 2011/2012 and CEO John Tsatsimas couldn’t be happier with the result.
Speaking to the A-League’s official website, he said, “It’s certainly a monumental moment for the club and for Joel.
“We believe that Joel is a superb ambassador for the sport and for this great city. He plays with pride, he plays with passion, and he wears his heart on his sleeve. That’s been the main reason that he has been so popular with our fans, and we are proud to have him as part of the Newcastle Jets well into the future.”

Han er en spiller vi overhodet ikke trenger; feil alder, feil spillestil, feil rykte og feil etternavn (vel, den siste var kanskje litt usaklig...).
