Leeds United are delighted to announce the signing of Sebastiaan Bornauw, who joins on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee, subject to a work permit and international clearance.

The 26-year-old becomes the third signing of the summer window for the club, following the arrivals of Lukas Nmecha - a teammate of Bornauw's for the last four years - and fellow defender Jaka Bijol.

Joining from Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg, Bornauw is a powerful and commanding defender who looks to dominate aerial battles in both boxes, standing at 6ft 3' in height.

Having begun his career in his native Belgium, Sebastiaan progressed through the academy at Anderlecht and into the first team.

From there, he would play regularly in the first team at the age of 19 in both the Belgian Pro League and the UEFA Europa League, before attracting interest from elsewhere.

A move to FC Koln in Germany came in 2019 where Bornauw put in further impressive displays, including scoring on his Bundesliga debut.

A two-year spell in Cologne brought 57 appearances and seven goals, before joining Wolfsburg where he would play nearly 100 times, including matches in the UEFA Champions League.

It was not just at club level where Bornauw showed his quality, as he represented Belgium throughout the age groups at international level.

Beginning with the Under-15s and playing in every age group up to the Under-21s, a senior debut came in 2020 with further caps to follow.

With Premier League preparations continuing for Daniel Farke's side, everyone at Leeds United would like to welcome Sebastiaan to the club.‌

Wolfsburgfansen visstnok glad for å bli kvitt ham. Trolig pga skadene, for han var god forut for disse. Men er vel neppe en særlig upgrade i forhold til Wöber da tenker jeg. Det samme gjelder vel Gudmundsson. Visstnok dodgy defensivt og langt fra like god (statsmessig) som Firpo offensivt. Tar vi med en skadeplaget Nmecha i tillegg, har vel ikke akkurat de 3 (potensielt 4) første spillerne inn vært til å få vann i munnen av. Bijol er vel den eneste skikkelige forsterkningen...

Bornauw blir sett på som cover (i utgangspunktet), en av fire veletablerte mmidtstoppere i klubben (as of now). Likevel var han kjent med klubbens interesse fem måneder før overgangen - og i løpet av den tiden så han ...alt ... av kamper.

 Leeds United had been tracking Sebastiaan Bornauw for months. The centre-back was a player the Whites were keen to bring in for most of this year - and the 26-year-old himself was eager to join.

He watched every Leeds game over the final five months of the season and secretly experienced the highs and lows alongside every supporter. His £5million switch from Wolfsburg was confirmed earlier this month, becoming the third acquisition acquired by Daniel Farke this summer.



"I like to be aggressive, even to play a high line. So, aggressive forward defending. I like to go more man-v-man style of play and then I try on set pieces to get some goals from time to time."

What do you know about Daniel Farke and Leeds United?

"I would say quite a lot because I watched I think the past five months since I knew of the interest. I tried to watch nearly every game so I would say the second half of the season I nearly watched everything.

"So I saw the games - I was a bit stressed as well as probably all the fans. So yeah I saw their football. I would say aggressive defending. Offensive play - dominating football and nice to watch. That's what I remember about it.
"The interest was there quite some time ago, but we kept it really silent because we really wanted the deal to come true. I think it always helps to keep it silent and then just announce it on the day that it has to be announced.
"We did good on that from the Leeds side and from our side as well, so happy that the deal went through."

You've obviously had a few conversations with the manager. What type of role does he foresee for you this season?

"That's a good question. I think we have four good centre-backs and we're all going to try to play a good pre-season and then I think he'll make his choice."
