'Such short notice' - Leeds United's newest face on his phone blowing up and training impact

Sam Chambers spoke to LeedsLive during Leeds United's pre-season training camp in Germany and reflected on that momentous goal against Harrogate Town

Competitive targets lie ahead for Sam Chambers, but he has already sampled the dream of millions of Leeds United fans throughout history. Like so many good things at Leeds in recent years, it all began with Joe Gelhardt dribbling.

Chambers had started the move with his own drive and persistence inside the Leeds half. Gelhardt would pick the ball up inside Wetherby Road's centre circle and the Liverpudlian just drove forward into space.

The attacker needs a goal more than most in the Whites squad and he looked like he might be about to dig out another wonder strike, but his run was halted on the edge of the box. The ball rolled back, into an acre of space and it was Chambers who happened to be in the right place at the right time.

"It was a dream come true," he told LeedsLive. "I wasn't expecting it, to be honest. I only had about five, 10 minutes to come on.

"I just thought I might as well make the biggest impact I can. The ball came out and I thought I might as well hit it, luckily it went in."

It was Harrogate Town. It was a friendly, but, however his career now plays out, nobody will ever take that moment away from Chambers, a youngster who began at Thorp Arch as a six-year-old. It was a goal more than 10 years in the making and the reaction of his peers said it all.

Harry Gray, Charlie Crew and Luca Thomas were beaming from ear to ear for their friend. The seniors flocked to Chambers too. Sam Byram knows how it feels to come through the United ranks and make that senior breakthrough.

There were no friends or family in the stands on the night, sadly. The teenager had been drafted into Daniel Farke's squad at such short notice, the tickets for the match had been long sold out when Chambers's nearest and dearest went looking.

"It was a weird one because my family were away on holiday," he said. "None of my friends could really get tickets and my other family couldn't get tickets because it was all sold out.

"It was such short notice of playing and it meant no one could get tickets in time. Everyone was watching on their phones, but I didn't have anyone in the stands there."

It was Chambers's phone which was blowing up when he eventually got back to the dressing room after full-time and his post-match drills. Parents, brothers, grandparents and friends have had many reasons to be reaching out to the teenager.

A first professional contract was signed in March while he was barely making his first steps with the under-21s. Farke fast-tracked him into the first team this summer. Initial nerves were understandable on the day he was told by the youth coaches he might be called over.

"It was with my coach first," he said. "He pulled me aside and said 'You might be going with the first team today' and, at first, I was with the 21s in the training and they said they might pull you across.

"I was really nervous. They called my name and as soon as I got there, I knew a couple of people, Archie [Gray], Charlie [Crew], so I settled down and from then [I've] just been really enjoying it."

Not only has Chambers gone from the under-18s to the first team within a year, but he was then deemed good enough to go to Germany last month. The forward was one of only a handful of youth prospects taken on the training camp, where he sat down to do this interview.

What is the biggest shock for a teenager stepping into that environment?

"The level of training," he said. "Everyone's hunger and desire to be better every day. It's something you don't see as much as you go down [the age groups]. They really want to be at the top and stay at the top for as long as possible.

"The fitness, the strength, the technical work, tactical work. It all comes together and you can really see why they are where they are."

Ny kontrakt for Sam Chambers.

Leeds United are pleased to announce Sam Chambers has signed a new contract with the club, to remain at Elland Road until the summer of 2028.

Having represented the Whites for over 10 years, Chambers celebrates his 18th birthday today, reaching another big milestone with the club after progressing through the academy age groups at Thorp Arch, then into the first team setup for the 2024/25 season.

After impressing during pre-season in Daniel Farke's side, he made his first team debut against Plymouth Argyle in the Sky Bet Championship, before then making a first start in last month's Emirates FA Cup clash at Elland Road.

Having also regularly featured within the Under-21 setup this season, the Leeds-born midfielder has shown his versatility by operating in a number of different positions.

Away from the club, Chambers has also represented Scotland at Under-19 level, most recently playing in the UEFA Euro U19 Championship qualifying campaign.

Everyone at Leeds United would like to congratulate Sam on signing a new contract and we now look forward to seeing his further development with the club.

Absolutt en lovende kar, og flott at han har forlenget. Men opplevde egentlig at han ble litt lett selv i forrige U21-kamp.

Der har han nok fortsatt litt å hente.
