The has been speculation in Italy in recent weeks that Catania were involved in match fixing last season, and today arrests have been made in connection to these allegations. If found guilty of these actions they may be relegated from Serie B in the same way Juventus were demoted to the second tier of Italian football in 2006. If Sicilian side wrre to suffer the same fate it is likely to lead to a mass exodus of their key players, and gives Leeds United a boost in landing forward target Emanuele Calaio.
BT Sport have revealed seven people have been arrested in connection to four games including directors of Catania. The club narrowly missed out being relegated from Serie B which would have had major consequences for the club, with reports they could have gone into liquidation. The four games in question enabled Catania to avoid the drop but this could now have serious implications for the club, and the future of their players.
Earlier this month Catania Una Fede claimed Leeds want to sign Calaio from the Italian side. New manager Uwe Rosler has made it is his priority to improve his attacking during the summer transfer window, and Calaio is a possibility open to Leeds. It was also claimed Serie A side Atalanta are also showing an interest in the Catania star as they too look to take advantage of the club’s dire situation.
