Mateusz Klich admitted he was resigned to dropping back to the bench against Ipswich Town on Saturday but vowed to fight to break into Leeds United’s line-up after helping the club into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup. The Poland international turned in his most convincing performance to date for Leeds as a weakened Thomas Christiansen side beat Burnley on penalties to make the last 16 of the League Cup on Tuesday night.
Klich’s start to his career at Elland Road since signing from FC Twente in June has been hampered by injury and he is yet to start a league fixture for the club but the midfielder was one of several players who took the chance to impress Christiansen during an enthralling cup tie at Turf Moor. Christiansen admit to facing selection “headaches†after the game but he is expected to revert back to his usual line-up as Leeds look to hold their position at the top of the Championship against Ipswich.
United were beaten for the first time this season away at Millwall last weekend.Klich, who converted the third penalty of the shoot-out at Burnley, said: “Probably we (the players who started at Turf Moor) won’t play on Saturday but I hope everyone who does manages to do good and do their jobs, and that we’re going to win as we lost the last game. Now we have to focus on the league.“I hope I’ll play but it’s a tough decision for our coach because we not only have 11, 12 or 13 players but 20 who want to play.
I think it’s good.â€Christiansen has made numerous changes in every round of the League Cup and used Tuesday to hand debuts to goalkeeper Andy Lonergan and striker Pawel Cibicki. Leeds fought their way past Sean Dyche’s side after a flurry of four goals in the final stages of normal time left the tie locked at 2-2. “The players knew that if we stay in the cup we get a chance to play more often,†Klich said. “We tried our best and we won.â€
