Leeds United 5 things to expect in Sunday’s SD Eibar friendlyBy Graham Smeaton on Jul 22, 2017 0 Comments
Aside from a hastily arranged ‘practice game’ with Turkish opponents Bursaspor, where they were soundly beaten 3-0, Leeds United have had an unbeaten pre-season.
After beating non-league opponents Harrogate Town, Guiseley and North Ferriby at home, Leeds United are now in Austria and over the hump of a three-game mini-tour.
After the loss to late replacements Bursaspor, Leeds faced 1.Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach in a more competitive game yesterday, coming out on equal terms against a decent strength side put out by the ninth-placed German top-tier side.
Last time out vs Borussia Monchengladbach
The 1-1 draw against the German side, was not only a step up in class football-wise, but it was also a step up in performance from the flat display against Bursaspor. Leeds United were crisp, showed good movement and were a definite threat on more than one occasion.
With that in mind, here’s five things that fans can expect when the Whites play SD Eibar on Sunday in Jenbach, Austria.
Five things Leeds United can expect against SD Eibar on Sunday1. To see a strong side put out: Leeds United will want to build upon the positivity building from the Borussia Monchengladbach game. Leeds weren’t scared of their higher-tier opponents, putting out a very strong side to face them. As the Whites build towards their final pre-season friendly against Oxford United, at Elland Road, next Saturday, a strong side is a must for Leeds. Now is not the time to chop, change and experiment.
2. A further clarification in the goalkeeping situation at Elland Road: Quite simply, it appears that Alex Wiedwald has not come to Elland Road to sit on the bench for United. Expect him to again be selected over last season’s #1 Rob Green; if this is the case, then surely it sends out a huge pointer that head coach Thomas Christiansen sees the recent buy from Werder Bremen as Leeds’ #1 for the upcoming Sky Bet Championship 2017/18 campaign.
3. Positions to be settled: the start of the game is likely to see what Christiansen sees as largely his first-choice side going into next season. Pontus Jansson, whilst suspended for the first two games of the new campaign, is likely a shoo-in as a starting centre-back throughout the 2017/18 campaign. New boy Matthew Pennington should get a run out alongside Jansson, as Leeds look to push the Everton loanee. The middle of the park could see Christiansen juggle his massive pack of midfielders in order to look at different combinations. Also expect the possibility of Samu Saiz starting over Pablo Hernandez.
4. Ezgjan Alioski to get another 60 minute spell: Alioski was one of the players highly-feted by fans and other observers for his display in the game against ‘Gladbach. He impressed with his quick feet, control of the ball and his willingness to get stuck in and involved. Such is the impact of what Leeds United fans are seeing, the Macedonian is garnering high hopes from Leeds United supporters. These supporters will be looking for a development of his impact so far since signing, with a glance case toward his 16 goals/14 assists for FC Lugano last season in the Swiss Super League.
5. Leeds fans to be there in force, again: As per usual Leeds United will be cheered on by their fans for this final game of the Austria tour against La Liga side SD Eibar. These fans have travelled to Austria, put up with the disappointment of a cancelled game, climbed in taxis looking to find a hastily rearranged ‘private’ game and remained positive throughout. Rest assured, there will be a sizeable travelling contingent of Whites fans at Sunday’s game.
